) Crime fighter was ‘targeted’

‘A revenge attack’ GARY VAN DYK

A crime fighter in Delft has come under attack from local thugs for his efforts to curb crime in the area. Hassien Jacobs, a dedicated community worker who recently started the Roosendal Social Safety and Civil Rights Establishment, had a lucky escape on Sunday 12 February when his house was set alight in the middle of the night. Jacobs explained he had been out earlier that evening and when he returned his wife was already asleep. “When I came home I washed and made myself something to eat,” he said. “I was just settling down when there was an urgent knock on the door and one of my neighbours shouted that the back of the house was on fire. “My wife also woke up and when we went to the back of the house we realised that the roof and fence were on fire and it was spreading quickly. “Things happened so fast but I must say that the community sprang into action very quickly to help douse the fire even though the fire brigade had already been called,” recalls Jacobs. By the time the fire brigade arrived, they had already managed to get most of the fire under control but there was already extensive damage. All the organisation’s stationery and some equipment that they used for their youth fitness projects were destroyed as well as two washing machines and Jacobs’ garden tools. He pointed out that initial investigations by the emergency services indicated that it might have been an electrical fault that started the fire, but he has his doubts about that because there are no electrical appliances, or wiring in the area where the fire started. “You can see that the fire started here at the top of the roof, and there is no electrical wiring here,” he said, pointing to a section of the damaged roof. “All the light fittings are nearer to the main section of the house and we would have heard or smelled the fire when it started. I think this is a definite case of arson because there have been rumours that the criminal elements in this neighbourhood are not happy with what we want to do in this organisation.” Jacobs is adamant however, saying the “attack” won’t put them off their goals for the area, especially the youth. “We don’t want them to fall into the trap of drugs and gangsterism and the way the rest of the community helped shows that we all want to fight crime in this area. “I want to thank all my neighbours for their help and tell the guilty parties that their attack has only made us stronger as a community to get rid of crime in the area. “I think that they have realised that as an organisation we are serious about making a difference.”
