A

unique and quirky art installation aimed at creating awareness around an unknown plastic pollutant and its risk has hit beaches and popular attractions around the country.

The Kiickbutt initiative was initiated more than a year ago but gained momentum over the last month.

The initiative is aimed at simulating the magnitude of damage created by irresponsible disposal of the cigarette butts and what animals encounter as they come across the butts in nature.

The 19 life-sized butts are created from decommissioned telephone poles, spray-painted to resemble cigarette butts.

Clive Amsel, WRAPP CEO, installation artist and environmentalist, says many people do not realise the cigarette butts are actu-

ally made of plastic and are one of National Geographic’s top listed plastic pollutants in the world.

While they may look like white cotton, the basis of most cigarette filters is a plastic named cellulose acetate, which can take up to 10 years to fully decompose.

The environmental risk is increased in the fact that filters are designed to absorb the contaminants in cigarettes and prevent them from going into the lungs. These con-

taminants include cadmium, arsenic and lead which are then released into waterways or ingested by animals. “We chose areas that are environmentally sensitive, but also areas where people tend to smoke and leave their butts,” says Amsel. “As you walk along the beach or take a hike anywhere in the country, you will find cigarette butts scattered all over the place, defacing the natural beauty of your surroundings.”

ge is but a number.

And Dr Hymie Ehrlich is proof of this as he spent his 90th birthday on Monday 13 January paragliding.

Ehrlich, a former resident of Goodwood, says the offer came as a surprise to him.

This was his third paragliding experience, which he says just gets better.

“I never expected to be paragliding for my 90th birthday, but it was and always is a wonderful experience. Fly Cape Town Paragliding decided to gift me with the experience which I am especially grateful for.

“The flight was scheduled for 11:00, but we had to wait a bit more than an hour as the wind had to pick up before we could take off.

“The first time I went up was at the age of 86. And it just keeps getting better. I enjoy the freedom it offers and the fresh air,” says Ehrlich.

“The views of the buildings are beautiful, but it was the movement of cars and people walking which was more interesting for me.”

The flight, which takes off on Signal Hill, took about seven to 15 minutes.

Ehrlich’s family awaited him at the landing ground in Sea Point.

He says the paragliding instructor, Stephan

Kruger, asked if he should do a trick in the air, but Ehrlich declined the offer saying, “No, thank you. I’m fine.”

He says the remainder of his birthday was spent with family.

Ehrlich currently resides in Sea Point but runs a practice in Bellville.

“I’ve been practising in Bellville for 10

years, after being in Goodwood for 54 years.

The best advice I can give to people is don’t stop working if you can contribute to making a difference in someone’s life.”

Ehrlich, who was married for 60 years, has two children, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

“On days like today, family is important

and I’m happy mine chose to spend it with me.

“I miss my wife Annette so much, but she passed on five years ago. I’m sure she would’ve been proud of the experiences I’ve been doing of late.”

The identified areas included Lion’s Head, Llandudno, Table View, Scarborough, Fish Hoek, Platteklip Gorge, Kommetjie and Umhlanga beaches, Tokai, Zeekoevlei and the Cederberg mountains.

The installation is funded by WRAPP waste who were motivated to get involved through their passion for responsible waste removal. Amsel says the installation will be around until June and move to other locations, weather dependent.

“It seems like a small thing but it has a butterfly effect, a lot of small things add up to a big problem,” says Amsel.

Another area of focus is the CBD, as Amsel says many drivers discard of their butts on sidewalks and out car windows.

“This enters the stormwater systems, goes out to sea and affects our marine life and shellfish. We end up eating that,” he says.

The butts have already caused a stir and Amsel hopes it will change people’s minds about irresponsible disposal of their cigarette butts, and decrease the toxic waste caused by discarded cigarette butts.

It is estimated that 18 million cigarettes are smoked around the world daily.

“It is a personal choice whether or not to smoke, but at least throw the discarded ciga-

Aside from the toxicity, the butts also pose a major fire risk. One of the biggest reported veld fires which started on Table Mountain in 2007 was caused by a tourist who dis-

carded a smouldering cigarette butt out of his car window.

Amsel says they have enough funding to run until June and hope to secure additional funding to assist them in continuing at more locations beyond this date.

English Bible for the Deaf opens new world NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

or many the words in the Bible are selfexplanatory.

Verses like “whoever has ears, let them hear” or “if you declare with your mouth...you will be saved” are so commonplace, many don’t think twice when reading it.

For a deaf person this is a completely different experience, says Dr Rocco Hough, who helped put together the English Bible for the Deaf (EBD), which the Bible Society of South Africa released at the end of last year.

Hough, who was a reverend at the De la Bat Dutch Reformed Church for the deaf in Bellville for over 30 years, was directly involved with both translations, along with Elmien Roux, a retired teacher who used to work at the De la Bat School for the Deaf in Worcester.

Helping them were scores of academics and deaf people, making this a translation developed with the deaf, for the deaf.

The EBD follows the runaway success of The Afrikaans Bible for the Deaf of 2008 (now also known as the Bible for All), the first Afrikaans Bible for the deaf.

The EBD is aimed at people who were born deaf and could not learn a language in an auditory way.

Dr Rocco Hough and his wife, Jean. Hough says Jean has been a big help in the process of putting together a more readable Bible for the deaf.. there said they were struggling to understand the English Bible for the Deaf they were using at the time.

When he looked at the Bible himself, he saw about 50 words in the first chapter of the Bible that the average deaf person wouldn’t understand.

There was a great need for a text-based Bible for the deaf in English, Hough realised.

And as he knew only too well from translating the Afrikaans Bible for the deaf, most of the existing Bible is too difficult for a deaf person to understand.

“The mother tongue of the deaf is Sign Language, a very difficult language for hearing people to learn, and likewise, difficult for deaf people to understand written language as we find it in our Bibles.”

A hearing impairment normally leads to language impairment.

“Deaf children cannot learn a language in a normal way, and in the past deaf children were sent to a school for the deaf at the age of three where they had to learn a language in a specialised way.”

Even though they have normal intelligence, the average reading ability of an adult deaf person is that of an eight-year-old-hearing child.

This creates a large barrier when trying to read something like the Bible.

Added to this is the fact that the Bible is filled with idioms, which is something that

is acquired by speaking a language over time and not something deaf people learn automatically.

Translation The translation of EBD officially started in 2011 and the text was completed after about five years.

“After (this) it was tested, the development of all the footnotes and illustrations, the page layout, and then it was printed in China, who has the largest and most modern Bible printing press.”

Two source experts Prof Bart Oberholzer and Prof Hermie van Zyl helped with this translation. After Oberholzer’s death, Dr Tiana Bosman took over.

Hough says this Bible is ideal for groups of people wanting to read an easy translation, like Christians in countries like Pakistan and India.

“There is such a big need for a Bible like this and I’m grateful we could finish it,” Hough says.

Hannerie Swart, development manager at the National Institute for the Deaf (NID), says it’s special that the deaf can receive the word of God in a way that’s easily understandable.

“It supports deaf accessibility and inclusivity.”

Man bou marimba tuis NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk Party mense beskou visvang as die perfekte ding om mee te ontspan; ander versamel muntstukke as ’n stokperdjie.

Dirk Streicher (61) van Eversdal is nie een van daardie mense nie.

Die perfekte uitdaging vir hom is om ’n konsertmarimba te bou – met al die nodige komplekse wiskundige uitdagings wat daarmee gepaardgaan. En dit is sonder dat hy self enige instrumente bespeel.

Dirk, wat as ’n siviele ingenieur opgelei is, is gewoond aan ’n lewe met ’n mengelmoes van uitdagings en belangstellings.

Hy is onder meer betrokke by eiendomsontwikkeling, brandnavorsing by die Universiteit Stellenbosch en die verkoop van kompressors. Jare lank het hy ook spesialisskrynwerkery beoefen.

Dit was daarom nie juis vir sy

naastes ’n groot verrassing toe hy aankondig hy wil ’n konsertmarimba bou nie.

Hy het hoeka eintlik kort tevore ’n kontrabas klaar gebou.

“My suster (die kunsjoernalis Elretha Britz) is in die musiekbedryf,” vertel hy. Britz se dogter, Zanelle, is lid van die Kaapse Filharmoniese Orkes, waar sy kontrabas speel. Sowat vier jaar gelede het hy binne ’n jaar vir haar ’n kontrabas gebou.

“Toe sy suster met hom praat oor die perkussielesse wat sy neem, het sy genoem ’n kennis is op soek na ’n konsertmarimba.

Dit sou maklik wees, het Dirk gereken, en besluit om sommer self een te bou.

Dit was toe meer van ’n uitdaging as wat hy ooit kon raai en dié instrument het hom ’n volle drie jaar besig gehou.

In teenstelling met ’n kontrabas was daar nie regtig volop hulpmid-

dels om ’n konsertmarimba in ’n Suid-Afrikaanse omgewing te bou nie.

En ’n konsertmarimba is baie meer kompleks as ’n gewone marimba. Dit het onder meer vyf oktawe en 61 note.

Dirk moes ’n klomp verskillende faktore in berekening hou toe hy die marimba gebou het – van die tipe hout wat beskikbaar is, tot hoe die note gesny moet word sodat dit die vorm en kurwe het om die regte noot te speel. Boonop het die resonator (boks) ’n groot invloed op die klank.

Sy seun, Simon (wat ook ’n ingenieur is en in toegepaste wiskunde spesialiseer), het selfs ingespring om ’n rekenaarprogram te skryf wat die proses vergemaklik.

Dirk het ’n spesiale apparaat gekoop wat die klank opneem en toe met behulp van Simon se program die note se toonhoogtes bepaal en aangepas.

In Desember verlede jaar het Dirk die marimba-speler Dylan Tabisher genooi om die instrument te beproef, juis omdat hy nie self kan speel nie.

Dirk se dogter, Petro Wagner, sê dit was ’n ongelooflike ervaring om te sien hoe iemand die instrument gebruik en te hoor hoe mooi dit klink.

Dirk sê hierdie is ’n “eksperimentele marimba” en wil graag

weer een bou, veral met al die kennis wat hy intussen opgedoen het.

Die jare lange proses het hom egter nog nie geïnspireer om self ’n instrument te begin speel nie.

“Ek is glad nie musikaal nie,” sê hy. Hy het ’n paar maande lank musiek geneem totdat sy onderwyseres hom betaal het om op te hou, spot hy. Nee, vir Dirk sal die komplekse berekeninge en bouwerk die grootste uitdaging wees.

NOTICE OF PRESCRIBED ECOLOGICAL BURN TO BE UNDERTAKEN AT THE SANDOWN FYNBOS CORRIDOR Vula Environmental Services plans to conduct an ecological burn of RE-Erf 1, Sandown, the Sandown Fynbos Corridor (SFC), a portion of the Table Bay Nature Reserve, between 17 February-21 February 2020. The area measures approximately 34 ha and is located east of The Sandown and Parklands College. You have been advised of the above-mentioned action in accordance with the Sub-section 19 read with Schedule 2 of the AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT BY-LAW, 2016.

Approximately 34 ha of the SFC section of Table Bay Nature Reserve will be burnt over a 1- 2-day period. This will affect residents as well as businesses in the Sandown area on the days of the burn.

Staff from Vula will conduct the burn. Staff from the City of Cape Town’s (CCT) Biodiversity Management Branch (BMB) will assist in various aspects of the burn on the day including overall co-ordination and control. The area will be searched for slow moving animals and these will be relocated to suitable areas outside of the prescribed burn area.

Vula and CCT BMB staff will ensure that the procedure is conducted efficiently and safely.

Fire-breaks have been maintained and fire-fighting equipment and fire hydrants have been tested to ensure that everything is in working order. Treated waste water will be used to extinguish the fire. The fire will be extinguished at 16h00 on the day of the burn and will be monitored for possible flare ups.

The actual date of the burn is dependent on weather conditions. All required permits will be obtained from the City’s Air Pollution section and Fire and Rescue Services. Air Quality, BMB as well as Fire and Rescue Services conducted the required pre-inspection of the area.

Surrounding residents are advised to keep their windows shut while burning takes place.

Laundry should be taken off washing-lines to prevent odour contamination from smoke.

The SFC is comprised Cape Flats Sand Fynbos (CFSF). The purpose of burn is for the stimulation and germination of indigenous plant seeds that require a natural fire regime in order for the vegetation type to remain healthy and to perpetuate species. The burning of this particular section in this season is critical to success of the rehabilitation and restoration activities that are currently underway on site.

Prior to the burn, a faunal search and rescue will be undertaken to remove any slowmoving animals to safety. The areas are not fully enclosed and escape routes will also be provided.

Residents are advised to send any objections in writing to the City’s Air Quality Management, rowan.carolus@capetown.gov.za within seven days of receipt of this notice. (15 January 2020).

ast year a woman walked up to Chad Esau and said she would pray for his skin to turn back to normal.

Esau (22) smiled politely and then prayed for the opposite.

“It was that moment that I realised I’m not that young boy who used to pray for my (skin condition) to go away.

Esau, from Bellville-South, has come a long way from being bullied as a young boy.

These days he’s a part-time model and is vying for the title of Mr South Africa 2020 and hopes to inspire everyone who is a little different.

Vitiligo is a skin condition that causes the loss of skin colour in blotches. Michael Jackson famously tried to hide any signs of the illness, while Winnie Harlow became a top model with her unique beauty.

Esau’s Vitiligo started when he was between 5 and 6 years old. “I didn’t know what it was called at that time because the internet wasn’t as informative as it is right now.

I always thought it’s “wit lewer” (white liver), that’s what people called it growing up.”

When he became a teenager he received his first phone and discovered the condition is called Vitiligo.

He always felt self-aware about the condition, but with time he started accepting it.

“I can’t picture myself without my Vitiligo,” he says.

“I learned that it never mattered what people say about me growing up, it’s always been what I tell myself.”

Esau works as a barista at GrandWest and this is how his modelling career took off.

He was working the night shift when a scout asked whether he wanted to start modelling.

“I said yes because it is something I wanted to do.”

Esau put motivational sticky notes on his wall with things he wanted to achieve and coincidentally he was focusing on a sticky note about becoming a model that specific morning.

His decision to enter Mr South Africa is one that suddenly popped into his head.

“I told myself ‘no that’s ridiculous, why would I wanna do modelling as big as Mr South Africa 2020’?” But later he changed his mind.

“Why can’t I do this? I’ve always been a role model for family and friends growing up.”

Modelling has given him a platform to inspire more people and speak to those who are a bit different or who are bullied.

Women’s fit night out coming soon Women’s Health magazine will be hosting the Women’s Health Fit Night Out at the Sun Exhibits, GrandWest on Saturday 15 February.

Richwood resident and graphic designer, Olivia Viglatzis, has launched a new customised emergency strap to help during an emergency.

The strap folds around seat belts, a baby seat and backpack strap and has details of the driver, baby or school going child – these include the name and surname of the individual, an emergency contact and medical aid details.

“All of this came to mind one evening when I was driving to the shop and thought to myself, ‘what would happen if I was to be in an accident?

“How would the emergency services know who to contact?

“And so it all started,” Viglatzis explains.

They also decided to make the

strap available for school backpacks. “School children get injured and no one knows who to contact,” Viglatzis adds.

According to her the idea started small and they hope they can someday grow it into a business.

“We started in November and we have only done things via Facebook so far, so we are really still small.” The business has gained some momentum through word of mouth.

Viglatzis hopes to approach medical aid companies to get involved.

“We will be marketing it ourselves for now as each of the emergency straps are individually made for that particular person’s needs.”

The straps can be ordered and mailed to anywhere in the country.

Xhosa plays to grace playhouse stage F

or a number of years, The Milnerton Playhouse has been associated with Joe Slovo’s Kamvalethu Youth Group as well as Okwamanzi Art Junction from Dunoon and as part of its outreach programme, has assisted not only with productions but also by offering the Playhouse as a performance venue.

Milnerton Playhouse will once again be hosting two new plays by these talented young people.

Written and performed by members of the respective groups they show the creativity and skills that these two groups have become known for.

The plays are in isiXhosa and all proceeds from ticket sales will go back to the respective groups.

The first play, Ukhakhayi, will be presented by the Kamvalethu Youth Group on Friday 17 January at 19:30.

Cast members include Sivuyile Mtiki, Zusiphe Mtshitshe and Sixolise Sophazi among others.

The second production will be performed

by Okwamanzi Art Junction on Saturday 18 January at 18:30.

Kyk sterre op Paarlberg Kapenaars en besoekers kan Saterdag die skitterende sterrehemel – spesifiek die sterrebondel 47 Tucanae – van nader leer ken tydens ’n somerpiekniek op Paarlberg.

Besoekers kan die sterrehemel verken met behulp van die Orion Observasiegroep (OOG) se lede wat graag hul kennis en teleskope gratis deel.

Die tema is Dans onder die Sterre, want die fokus is op 47 Tucanae, die tweede helderste sterrebondel wat pragtig in die suide sigbaar sal wees. Tucanae, genoem na ’n Suid-Amerikaanse voël, is 16 700 ligjare van die aarde en bestaan uit minstens ’n halfmiljoen sterre.

Die pieknieks is baie gewild by plaaslike inwoners en oorsese besoekers wat veral die mooi vergesigte van die valleie, berge en skiereiland geniet.

Dit begin om 18:00, met ’n begeleide toer van die monument om 18:30, waarna besoekers van 20:00 tot 22:30 deur die teleskope na die hemelruim kan tuur.

Gaste is welkom om hul eie piekniekmandjies te bring of een vooraf te bestel (R300 vir twee mense of R400 met ’n

mandjie ingesluit) by die koffiewinkel.

Dit sal ook oop wees vir koffie en ligte verversings, asook pizza.

Veilige parkering is beskikbaar en toegang word beheer. Onthou asseblief verkykers en warm klere.

Besoekers word aangemoedig om die omgewing te verken en daar is buitelugspeletjies en speelparke vir die kinders.

Catch the Philharmonic Orchestra at Kirstenbosch The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra will perform as part of the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts at Kirstenbosch Garden on Sunday 19 January.

Brandon Phillips will take the baton, with soloists Gabriella von Durkheim on flute, Peter Martens on cello and Jordan Brooks on violin.

Sets include Berlioz’s Roman Carnival, Doppler’s Hungarian Pastoral Fantasy (flute), Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Julieta Overture Fantasia, Saint-Saëns’s Swan and Allegro Appassionato (cello) and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No 4 “Italian” Monti Chardas (violin).

The gates will open at 16:00 and the concert will start at 17:15 and end at 19:00.

Nie huil of huil, nou kan jy self kies Jare gelede het mense by geleentheid gekla oor die kos wat die Suid-Afrikaanse Lugdiens op sy vlugte voorsit.

Wyle Hendrik Schoeman, toe minister van vervoer, se antwoord hierop in die Parlement was: “Man, wil jy vlieg of wil jy vreet?” Ek wil dit effens aanpas na “Man, wil jy vlieg of wil jy stilte hê?”

Want in ’n vliegtuig is jy oorgelewer aan wat die mense om jou doen. Daar is straks ’n huilende baba. En die baba het seker ook geen keuse nie, want iets pla.

Nou het ons ’n dilemma, want soms duur die vlug twaalf uur lank of meer.

Ek het simpatie met hulle en met die ouers. Babas is in die algemeen heel bekoorlik, al is dit iemand anders s’n. En natuurlik huil hulle van tyd tot tyd. Dis hoe hulle kommunikeer. In ’n vliegtuig word die lugdruk kunsmatig beheer om dit dieselfde as op die grond te hou, anders sou passasiers nie kon asemhaal nie. En dis heel dikwels wat ’n kindjie se ore laat pyn.

Bo in die lug is mense woelig, party drink te veel, party skreeu in die ry af na iemand anders of die lugverkoeling drup die heeltyd in jou nek. Op een so ’n internasionale vlug het ’n pa met ’n baba in sy arms gesit – ma was nie by nie – en die baba het met die opstyg begin huil.

En gehuil en gehuil en gehuil. Arme pa.

Ná so vyf uur het die ander passasiers begin kla. Toe kom ’n vlugdoedie en praat met die pa. En toe ons weer hoor, is sy en die pa behoorlik in ’n yelling contest gewikkel, alles in Chinees, sien.

Nou het Japan Airlines besluit hy waarsku mense wanneer hulle plek bespreek as daar babas op die vlug gaan wees, en waar hulle gaan sit. Dis al ’n goeie begin om die probleem op te los. Maar wat van diegene wat ná jou bespreek?

Ek doen graag ’n oplossing aan die hand: reserveer die agterste vyf rye sitplekke vir ouers met babas. Dan weet almal mos hulle moet elders sit as hulle stilte soek terwyl hulle daar tussen die wolke aan hul Moët et Chandon teug.

Maroela Media het mense vir kommentaar op Japan Airlines se besluit gevra.

“Sit oorpluisies in jou ore of luister musiek. Tien teen een snork jy soos ’n vark wanneer jy slaap,” lui een. En “Net so erg (as huilende babas) is pongende voete wat uit die skoene gehaal is op ’n 13 uur lange vlug...” Nog een: “Kan hulle ook aandui waar oorgewig mense sit – sal daai sitplekke ook wil vermy.”

Ander sê weer: “Klomp suurgatte. Dis die probleem met die samelewing: alles gaan oor EK. EK het vir my kaartjie betaal. EK verdien stilte. EK, EK, EK.” Iemand anders sê “Ons geniet dit as kinders op die vliegtuig is en dit pla ons nie. Die meeste ouers is ‘vlieg-wise’.”

Vanmelewe kon ’n mens ook kies waar jy wil sit: rook of nie-rook. En as almal nou weet die agterste deel van die vliegtuig is gereserveer vir ouers met babas, sal hulle tog weet hulle moet eerder elders sit. Dis huil of nie-huil.

Shaking things up: Once again, one of Africa’s biggest annual cultural events, the Cape Town Street Parade did not disappoint. Barely five days into 2020, and Eskom decides to start their excuses of loadshedding. What are they after now? More money to pocket, undeserved bonuses or whatever they can think of?

When are the corrupt “cronies” going to “pay back the money they wasted”?

When is JZ going to own up for his part in the failure of those “so-called plants, Medupi or whatever it is called”?

When are the municipalities which owe money to Eskom, going to start paying their debts? When are the illegal connections going to be stopped? Eskom is well aware of the illegal connections, but doesn’t do a thing to stop it.

When is the president going to put a stop to all this and government going to stop playing the “blame game” while the poor man in the street has to put up with all this nonsense?

Are we going to be compensated for our food going off in the refrigerator, for our electrical appliances being messed up due to loadshedding?

Or is the “blame game” now going to shift to the new person in charge? When the new person has inherited all the “incompetent staff” who created the whole mess in the first place.

Aan die mense wat gestop het om hom te help, en veral die man wat hom ’n geleentheid huis toe gegee het, wil ek net baie dankie sê. Hy het ’n wit bakkie gery met ’n Somerset-Wes-registrasienommer.

Met 500 woonerwe, omtrent 100 woonstelle, ’n aftreeoord en privaatskool is my vraag, waar gaan al die mense hul motors in die dorp parkeer?

Titanium, ons is baie dankbaar Ek wil graag hiermee my waardering uitspreek teenoor Titanium se paramedici vir hul uitstekende diens.

My man het op 23 Desember geval en sy been net onder die heup op drie plekke gebreek.

Ek het nie geweet watter kant toe nie en het dadelik vir Titanium geskakel. Die vrou wat die foon geantwoord het, het my kalm gehou en al die besonderhede geneem. Dit was ’n kwessie van minute toe stop hul ambulans by ons en die manne was uitstekend om hom te help en na die hospitaal te vervoer.

Hulle het daar gewag totdat hy mediese hulp by die trauma-afdeling kon kry.

Dit is net fantasties om te weet dat Titanium nie net na ons veiligheid omsien nie, maar ook mediese bystand kan verskaf in ’n tyd van nood.

If you pay attention while you drive you will notice them on the side of the road. They are right here in our suburbs and along our motorways.

They are a warning to all of us, but we probably disregard them pretty much the same way we do stop signs.

Crosses, too many crosses on the side of the road.

Behind each cross is a story of great heartache and lives lost too soon. I have noticed it before but even more so now after my family has planted its own cross. My son was a passenger when he died, taking with him hopes and dreams that will not be fulfilled. It took a year before we felt ready to plant our cross. Last week we went out to the crash site to see if the cross was still in place and to take fresh flowers. As we stood at the very place where my son took his last breath two cars came speeding past us, the lady was talking on her cellphone and not far behind her a guy in a bakkie, driving so fast that I heard him well before I saw the vehicle. We complain about the crime and corruption in our country, but we cannot obey the basic laws of our roads. Those crosses are sending us a message and pleading with us as drivers to slow down, stop at the red lights, ignore our cellphones, stay in our lanes and not get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. To the families who have a cross on the side of the road, I wish you peace as you enter another year without your loved one.

Durbies gee Langa pak slae Stormers oorheers Varsity-dag Die voormalige Springbok Hilton Lobberts, wat deesdae vir Hamiltons uitdraf, trek ’n speler van die WP-vyftiental plat tydens ’n Stormers Varsity-rugbydag op Saterdag 11 Januarie in Ravensmead. Die Stormers het sy mini-kragmetings met KSUT (15-10), Ikeys (15-5) en Maties (10-5) gewen, maar kon nie die WP-vyftiental, wat uit plaaslike klubspelers bestaan het, tot oorgawe dwing nie (10-15). Die Stormers se teenstanders het ook onderlinge mini-wedstryde gespeel.

Krieketspelers maak reg vir skolestryd Altesaam 10 hoërskole se eerste krieketspanne sal van aanstaande week af sake uitspook in die topafdeling van die Peter Buttner Sport-kompetisie vir skole in die Tygerbergstreek.

Die spanne speel Saterdae in twee groepe, waarna die afdelingwenners mekaar in die eindstryd sal aandurf. In groep 1 is Curro Durbanville (die verdedigende kampioen), HS Bellville, De Kuilen, Durbanville en Fairmont.

Die spanne in groep 2 is HTS

Bellville, Brackenfell, D.F. Malan, Stellenberg en Tygerberg.

Die ander nege skole in die Tygerbergstreek sal mekaar die stryd aansê in die o.19A2-kompetisie. In die een groep is Monumentpark, Parow, President, Proteahoogte en Reddam House Durbanville, terwyl Belhar, Edgemead, Fairbairn en The Settlers hulle in groep 2 bevind. Ook in hierdie kompetisie sal die twee afdelingwenners in Maart vir die eindstryd kwalifiseer. ’n Totaal van 15 skole se eerste

spanne sal van Februarie af ook betrokke wees by die gewilde Sammy Bloch/Medicare Aptekeuitklopkompetisie, wat op weeksdae afgehandel word. Stellenberg, die verdedigende kampioen, het ’n loslootjie vir die eerste ronde, terwyl die bepalings vir die eerste reeks wedstryde as volg is: HS Bellville t Belhar, Fairmont t. Brackenfell, President t Tygerberg, De Kuilen t Edgemead, D.F. Malan t Parow, Fairbairn t Durbanville, Curro t HTS Bellville. – Sarel Burger

In antwoord op Langa se 146/9 het Durbanville se aanvangskolwers Hayes van den Berg (74) en Jean Marais (73) met ’n onoorwonne vennootskap 152 lopies bymekaar geskraap.

Maar met Bellville (186) het sake minder voorspoedig verloop teen Kaapstad (236/6), ondanks ’n knap derdepaaltjie-vennootskap van 98 lopies tussen Schaughn van Greunen (58) en Uwe Birkenstock (45).

Brackenfell en die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland het loslootjies gehad.

In die eerste liga is Kraaifontein deesdae weer goed op dreef. Die Kraaie se telling van 228/6 was bo die vuurmaakplek van Edgemead (203) ná goeie bydraes deur Craig Ephraim (52* en 3/27) en Garth Madden (50).

Vir Edgemead het Justin Higgs (47) die beste vertoon.

Milnerton (233/7) was gans te sterk vir Noordelikes-Goodwood (114).

Die sege was grootliks te danke aan die bydraes van Damian Crowley (66), Maximillan Walter (46), Matthew Snyman (45) en Sean Ro-

ach (3/26). Tygerberg-klub (86) het lelik gefaal teen United (188) terwyl Kuilsrivier (142/9) met 3 paaltjies deur Primrose (143/7) getroef is.

Die Kuile is ook Sondag in ’n tweede wedstryd met 88 lopies deur United (230) geklop. . In die laaste reeks Premierliga-wedstryde in Desember het Brackenfell – die voorloper op die punteleer in daardie stadium – skande gemaak toe hy ’n pak slae van 172 lopies teen Rondebosch op die lyf geloop het.

In Durbanville (218/8) se kragmeting teen Strandfontein (143) het ’n vyfdepaaltjie-vennootskap van 150 lopies tussen Dale Campbell (83) en Byron Boshoff (73) tot die Durbies se redding gekom nadat hulle op 18/4 gesteier het. Bellville (76/2) het danksy ’n goeie spanpoging maklik met Langa (75) afgereken.

In die eerste liga het Ryan Milne (6/36) en Justin du Toit (52) gehelp dat Milnerton met 97 lopies teen Tygerberg-klub seëvier, terwyl Danie Bothma (5/20) en Craig Thyssen (44*) aan die voorpunt was van Kraaifontein (133/5) se vyfpaaltjieoorwinning oor Rylands.

Edgemead (238) het Gugulethu met 114 lopies verslaan ná knap bydraes deur Duane Abel (6/25), Aaron Wilke (53) en Bradley Johnson (53). Noordelikes-Goodwood (159) is naelskraap met twee lopies deur Ottomans geklop.
