‘ACCIDENT ZONE’: FOUR MAJOR COLLISIONS

‘Be careful on roads’ RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

M

otorists have been warned to be careful when climbing behind the wheel following a series of collisions in the Table View area this past weekend. Four major collisions occurred in Table View since the start of the weekend, spokesperson for the Table View Neighbourhood Watch (TVNW), Laura Outhet, says. These occurred in Wood Drive, Blaauwberg Road and Malibongwe Drive. On Otto du Plessis Drive (R27) in Blouberg, five people – four women and one man – passed away when the car they were travelling in apparently collided with another vehicle. The five sustained fatal burn injuries, the City of Cape Town’s traffic services says. According to media reports, the group was burnt beyond recognition. Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Services, says the collision occurred around 02:55 on Saturday 20 July. “The Fire and Rescue Services extricated the bodies from the vehicle by means of the jaws of life, and the Life and Netcare 911 ambulance services personnel certified the bodies as deceased,” Carelse says. Outhet says their volunteers have had an extremely busy weekend as a result of the multiple collisions in their precinct, and therefore issued some useful safety tips. “We would like to extend some valuable tips to motorists in the area, as well as anyone who uses the roads. Please remain vigilant at all times, be aware of how you are driving and how others are driving. Use defensive driving techniques and stay away from potential hazards. Prepare your vehicle and yourself for any situation you may find yourself in and practice scenarios whereby you know what to do if you need to. “Watch out for others and try to prevent ‘accidents waiting to happen’, by offering them the opportunity to sleep on your couch for the night and rather drive the next day. This may make them think twice about driving while tired or under the influence,” Outhet says. Motorists must also ensure that their vehicles are in a good driving condition before taking to the road and ensure absolutely all passengers are strapped in.
