otorists wanting to leave Table View and Killarney Gardens, or enter these areas were stuck in severe traffic delays on Monday morning as a result of a violent protest in Dunoon. Protesters are apparently unhappy about the eviction of illegal land grabbers along Malibongwe Drive where construction work is also currently underway. Protests flared up over the weekend and affected road users on Malibongwe Drive, Potsdam Road and the N7. These roads had

to be closed for motorists and re-opened a number of times since Friday 28 June. On Monday morning these roads had to be closed once again for motorists wanting to get to work. As a result, vehicles were piled up along Gie Road, Wood Drive, Blaauwberg and Koeberg Road. During the unrest tyres were set alight, as well as a truck in Killarney Gardens. One construction vehicle was also burnt out last week. Laura Outhet, spokesperson for the Table View Neighbourhood Watch, told TygerBurger that the watch assisted with closing off Malibongwe Drive until Law Enforcement

and the police advised that it could be re-opened again. “Our volunteers were stationed at a safe distance away from the action under the instruction of Law Enforcement and the police. “The neighbourhood watch did this on Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” Outhet says. She adds that the watch also sent out messages via WhatsApp groups, street committees and social media of the volatile situation, warning the public to find alternative routes. On Monday afternoon, the City of Cape Town, said in a statement that it condemns

the violent protest that has plagued Dunoon this past week. Malusi Booi, Mayco member for human settlement said: “I am disturbed by the scenes of violence and lawlessness. “While the City supports the right to protest, we condemn in the strongest terms illegal and violent protest which threaten the lives of our residents and cause costly damage to infrastructure and services. “Every rand that is spent repairing damaged, burnt or vandalised facilities, or infrastructure, is money that could be spent on providing housing to those who wait patiently on the City’s database,” said Booi.
