Cold front hits province The weather in the Western Cape got off to a chilly start last week, with an intense cold front hitting the province. Due to the rain and windy conditions, thunder and a few lightning strokes were seen in the Milnerton and Table View areas last week. The South African weather service said in a statement that the mountains of the province are about to experience the first snow of 2020 and residents should brace themselves for a combination of cold, strong gusty winds as well as moderate rainfall. HIGH DENSITY AREA: STRATEGY IMPLEMENTED

he provincial health department announced last week that Dunoon has been identified as a Covid-19 hotspot. This follows the high number of cases in the area, with the high density remaining one of the reasons for the spike in Covid-19. Natalie Watlington, provincial health department spokesperson, said as of last week, the provincial database shows there are 27 active cases in Dunoon. “A hotspot is where people live. Dunoon has been identified as a hotspot. This is different from a cluster. A cluster is where the out-
break originated, which is a place of gathering, such as a supermarket or retail store. Our response to hotspots, which involves slowing the spread of the virus, and protecting vulnerable people most at risk, requires the combined impact of our government, the private sector, all stakeholders, and residents to make a real difference,” Watlington said. A Covid-19 hotspot strategy has therefore been adopted for the Cape Town metro as a plan of action to curb the spread of the virus in hotspot areas. Watlington explained this plan sets out how the Western Cape government will utilise and coordinate its various government departments together
with the City of Cape Town and other stakeholders to fight Covid19 hotspots within Cape Town. The plan includes: . Case management, community screening, testing and the appropriate referral for quarantine and isolation. . Economic response for assisting and mapping businesses, ensuring social distancing in the workplace and places of economic activity, and the following of protocols developed for the workspace. . Safety response, which includes the police and provincial government and the City’s traffic deployment and law enforcement. . Food security and humanitarian response that includes the de-
partments of agriculture and social development as well as relevant City initiatives. . Places and spaces response that is led by the department of human settlements, particularly its interventions in informal areas. . Transport and public response that includes interventions with respect to movement of people, and public transport, among others. Dunoon councillor, Lubabalo Makeleni, previously said temporary shelters will be put in place for the disabled and elderly. Watlington said shelters are arranged by the City for people who do not have homes. “Quarantine facilities are arranged by Western Cape govern-

ment for people who are under suspicion to might have Covid-19 and cannot safely isolate at home,” Watlington explained. Various ministers in the province visited Dunoon in the past few weeks to implement the necessary safety measures to stop the spread of Covid-19. Watlington is urging the Dunoon community to practice social distancing and good hygiene. “Keep safe by wearing a cloth mask when in public, by keeping a distance of at least 1.5 metre from other people, by washing their hands often for at least 20 seconds, coughing and sneezing into their elbow or a tissue, and staying home if they feel sick.”
