Extra funding for wards in the Blaauwberg Subcouncil will help to move a step closer to putting crime in Table View under greater scrutiny.

This financial year the local subcouncil will benefit from an additional R1,2 million following a ward allocation of R200 000 for each of its

six wards by the City Council.

“While it is in many subcouncils the practice to divide the spoils equally, other subcouncils look at the disbursement of funds according to need or to worthy projects or projects that will benefit the entire subcouncil,” said subcouncil chairperson Heather Brenner.

“Instead of frittering a lot of our funding away on minor interventions that could and often should be

addressed by line departments or whose effectiveness within a year have disappeared into the ether, I would like to promote that in Blaauwberg we take a more holistic approach and look at the overall needs in our subcouncil and in particular in our most needy areas,” she said.

Brenner added that the subcouncil has already allocated the standard R3 million at an equality of R500 000 per ward for the 2012/13 budget.

“This extra R1,2 million for the same fiscal year could be the start of a process for Blaauwberg for something bigger and better in the future.”

Brenner, with fellow councillors Joy McCarthy (Ward 4) and Marissa Jansen van Rensburg (Ward 23), will be putting their resources together as a combined project for safety and security in the form of surveillance cameras.

Brenner said the project was only in its early stages and issues like costing and where the cameras will be placed still needed to be worked out.

She added that the cameras will be monitored via the city’s surveillance system.

“The sort of crimes they would monitor would depend on what was happening in their area of focus.” . To page 2.

Bear is Mutt of Year A caramel-coloured rescued dog from Welgemoed is the winner of the SPCA Royal Canin Mutt of the Year.

The dog called Bear, has provincial colours in dog agility.

She was chosen as winner from hundreds of dogs who entered the online pet competition.

“Since the day Bear was adopted from the CoGH SPCA in 2002, as a three-month-old puppy, she has been the life and joy of our family,” says her overjoyed owner, Lee-Anne CurtisCox. “She is an intelligent and curious individual with an utterly adorable and loveable disposition who is loved by everyone who meets her! I am often stopped by passers-by who ask what breed she is and I am always so proud to announce that she is a rescue,” says Lee-Anne.

Bear is very protective of her brother and sister (golden retriever, Barclay and muttmate Bailey) and likes nothing more than a good walk.

Bear and Lee-Anne recently departed for Pietermaritzburg to participate in the SA Dog Agility Championship. She is the only dog to achieve Grand Champion status in the Western Cape in dog jumping.

The competition, which ran over six weeks from 10 April to 21 May raised nearly R20 000 for homeless pets being cared for by the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. “The response was great and we’ve been so touched by the heart-warming stories shared by so many pet owners, young and old, and grateful to the dozens of people who have voted for them and donated to the SPCA”, said Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA communication and resource development manager Sarah Scarth.

“It was difficult to read the moving stories submitted, but so wonderful to know that each animal entered is in a caring, loving home. We hope the competition will inspire more people to open their homes to a homeless animal and let them share their special companionship,” said Tarryn.

The SPCA Royal Canin Mutt & Meow of the Year winners will all be awarded fabulous prizes, a floating trophy and medal and will feature on the cover of the CoGH SPCA’s magazine, Footprints.

Table View ratepayers The Table View Ratepayers’ Association will be having a special meeting on 6 August to elect a new executive committee.

Chairperson Mike Channing announced last week that due to an oversight the organisation’s AGM was not held in May as stipulated in its constitution, allowing for the election of the new committee.

All paid up members of the organisation can nominate members for the executive committee.

Toy show’s for all ages The Cape Model and Toy Club will be hosting its annual Youth Day Toy Show on 16 June at the Edgemead Community Hall.

“We plan to give an annual allocation towards security cameras with a view to them eventually as the years pass covering the ‘escape routes’ from our wards,” Brenner explained.

“At this point in time we don’t know how many cameras we will get for our pool of R600 000 but it’s a start.

“What would be really great would be for businesses in the area to come on board and partner with us in such a project,” Brenner suggested.

Councillors Barbara Rass and Cynthia Clayton from Atlantis will be spending their share of the extra money on needy projects in their own areas as will Lubabalo Makele-

ni, the ward councillor for Du Noon and Doornbach.

Councillor Jansen van Vuuren will spend some of their 2012 budget on four security cameras, two of which will be installed at the entrances to Melkbosstrand.

“The remaining two cameras will be installed in Blouberg.

“The cameras from the ward allocation will be used to protect Ward 23 with priority given to West Beach where the police have been having regular problems with housebreakings in the early hours of the morning,” Janse van Vuuren said.

“We will be looking at strategic places in the ward to cover all the entrances and exits,” she added.

All dog owners are invited to take part in the African Tails dog rally on Saturday (16 June) at the Cape Handlers dog club on Koeberg Road. There will be a cash bar and food

on sale, as well as the opportunity to braai.

There’s been a growing sense of unrest among taxi permit holders and operators in Cape Town.

A few members of the Maitland Taxi Association vented some of their frustration last week when they spoke candidly to TygerBurger about their uncertain future.

With the City’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system rapidly gaining momentum, virtually every operator is feeling the pinch in their pockets. Those who spoke to this newspaper insisted, however, that they are not against the MyCiTi project – as long as they get clear answers to what their future holds.

One of the operators quantified their loss in revenue when he explained that before BRT, he had about six or seven loads of passengers a day, but this has recently dwindled to just two loads.

A shareholding company called Kidrogen was established as an umbrella company to deal with four taxi associations along the West Coast:- Maitland Taxi Association, Du Noon Taxi Association, Ysterplaat Association and Blouberg Taxi Association.

Councillor Brett Herron, mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater says there is a clear plan as to what the future hold for permit holders.

Says Herron: “The city, through its engagements with the directly affected association representatives agreed to offer minibus-taxi operators fair compensation for their operating rights as well as an allowance for the surrendering of their taxis.

“The operators who accept the city’s offer of compensation are invited to use at least some of their compensation to buy shares in the Vehicle Operator Companies formed by the directly affected taxi associations and scheduled bus operators who will operate the buses for the MyCiTi service.

“If minibus-taxi operators decide not to take up any of the above options, they will be allowed to continue to operate their normal taxi service until their current licences expire.”

So, in summary, Herron says all duly licensed minibus-taxi operators lawfully operating services in Phase 1 that MyCiTi will be replacing can become shareholders in the Vehicle Operator Companies that will operate the MyCiTi buses if they choose to, or opt to take compensation instead.

Toe die Hoërskool Melkbosstrand sy nuwe kurrikulum beplan het, was die spesifieke vaardighede wat in die plaaslike arbeidsmark van Kaapstad en die provinsie benodig word, een van die groot oorwegings wat in ag geneem is.

Hierdie skool wat aan die begin van die jaar met twee duo-medium- klasse in beide graad agt en nege sy deure geopen het, aanvaar tans aansoeke vir sy graad 10-klasse vir 2013. “’n Hoof raak opgewonde as sy aansoeke reeds by die 80% trek en ons kry aansoeke van so ver as Malmesbury,” sê Daneil Ross, hoof by dié hoërskool.

Ross en sy personeel van vyf het sedert hulle in Maart in die nuwe skoolgebou ingetrek het, hard en lank gewerk om die skool op die been te bring.

“Dit is die lekker ding van ’n nuwe skool, jy kan van nuuts af begin en vra: ‘Wat verwag die arbeidsmark en provinsie van ons’,” verduidelik Ross hul denkrigting.

“Op akademiese vlak fokus ons op wiskunde en wetenskap. Dit is waar die grootste behoefte is in ons arbeidsmark en dit was ook ’n versoek van ons ouers. Min skole sê dit deesdae prontuit. Ons wil daardie rol gaan vervul in ons land,” sê hy en voeg by dat leerders by die skool die keuse van fisiese wetenskap en lewenswetenskap asook wiskunde of wiskundige geletterdheid het.

“Ons het regtig hard gewerk om te verseker dat ons laboratoriums toegerus is met interaktiewe wit borde. Die hele skool is ook op Wi-Fi en die internet is in elke klaskamer beskikbaar.”

Safe, Secure & Satisfied

Die skool beskik oor twee rekenaarsentrums wat toegerus is met 70 rekenaars vir die aanbieding van die vak rekenaartoepassingstegnologie.

Die skool bied ook verbruikerstudie aan en Ross hoop die ondersteuning van die plaaslike private sektor kan daartoe lei dat dié vak een van die gewildste onder leerders sal raak.

“Ons sal graag ’n vennootskap wil sluit met ’n hotel. Toerusting om ’n vak soos hotelbestuur aan te bied, is baie duur, maar as ’n hotel bereid is om een van ons praktiese klaskamers vir die doel te kom inrig, sal dit wonderlik wees. Ons wil dan ook op dié manier vir ons leerders die geleentheid gee om praktiese ondervinding op te doen, deur hulle byvoorbeeld in die hotel se kombuis te laat werk oor vakansies,” verduidelik Ross.

Hy wil graag ’n soortgelyke verhouding met ’n rolprent-ateljee bou.

“Toerisme en die rolprentbedryf is die twee sektore wat tans baie goed doen in Kaapstad en wat baie werksgeleenthede bied. Ons wil onsself as skool posisioneer om ’n voeder te wees vir dié industrieë in die Wes-Kaap.”

Om dié rede bied die skool dan ook animasie as deel van sy kuns-ontwerpvak aan. Ander afdelings in die vak sluit juweliersontwerp en musiek in.

“Ek dink ons is in hierdie stadium die enigste hoërskool in die omgewing wat nog die vak Afrikaans-huistaal aanbied en nie net as ’n tweede taal nie.”

Die Hoërskool Melkbosstrand sluit van volgende jaar af ’n graad 10-klas in, met die eerste graad 12- leerders wat in 2015 hul matriek hier sal voltooi.

Nederigheid is die duiwel se oorkussing!

Hopelik besef jy dadelik hierdie opskrif is verkeerd! Maar dit is hier bo met ’n rede. Dit is die opdrag van ’n groep spesiale mense met wie ek nogal baie tyd deel. As jy nou mense soek wat vir jou hoop uitdeel as dit donker is, letterlik en figuurlik, is dit dié spesiale mense. Met hulle, of met die meeste van hulle, deel ek die meeste oggende die sweet en moeite van die hardlooppad.

Min of meer elke oggend, so rondom vyfuur se kant, kom reën, kom hael, kom wind (nou nie regtig altyd en almal nie!) vat ons die pad en hardloop die omgewing, in ’n radius van so vyftien kilometer rondom Hoërskool Stellenberg, plat. Party stap nou wel meer as die ander, maar nogtans ... Vir my, wat al 27 keer die Comrades voltooi het, en nou nie meer so ver wil of kan hardloop nie, en reeds van 1977 so ongeveer 120 000 kilometer gehardloop het, is hierdie groep spesiale mense die medisyne wat my gees die laaste agt jaar gesond hou. Ons kuier en gesels elke oggend, omgee vir mekaar en sorg vir mekaar, lag oor en vir mekaar, is waarskynlik meer werd as Sondae se kerk vir die meeste mense.

Hierdie manne en vroue hou my voete op die grond, en op die regte pad, en my kop skoon. As jy vir ’n dag of drie nie opdaag nie, is hulle die mense wat vir jou dreigemente per e-pos en SMS stuur. Dis hulle wat jou jammer kry (meeste van die tyd darem) as jy ’n besering het. Met hulle kan jy hartseer deel en nuwe uitdagings bespreek. Hulle luister en gee om as dit moeilik gaan.

Soms kry jy weer jou beurt om vir een of meer van hulle ’n stukkie hoop uit te deel. Met hulle kan jy jou frustrasies deel sonder vrees dat hulle dit oorvertel – bloot omdat (party van) hulle soms net te moeg is om te luister. Sy vertel dat wyn ’n lewendige ding is en dat die smaak met tyd verander ... en dat wyn met respek behandel moet word. “Wanneer wyn aan wisselende temperature blootgestel word, gaan dit seerkry,” vertel sy. “Dit help nie jou wynrak is langs die yskas of die tuimeldroër nie. Agtien grade Celcius is die ideale temperatuur.”

Humiditeit is ook baie belangrik en die wyn moet plat lê sodat die kurk nat bly. “Kurk is ’n natuurlike produk wat asemhaal.

Die suurstof bind met komponente in die wyn, wat help met die smaak. As wyn nie plat gestoor word nie, kan die kurk breek, wat die smaak sal beïnvloed.”

By Vergenoegd sal hulle nooit van kurk afsien nie, vertel Marlize, hoewel van hulle jonger wyne wel deesdae met skroefdoppe spog.

Veral wyn wat nog ’n rukkie moet lê voordat dit sy volle potensiaal bereik, het ’n kurkprop nodig.

Die vraag hoe lank ’n mens wyn kan hou, hang af van verskeie faktore, vertel Marlize. “Hoe die wyn gestoor is, waar dit gestoor is, watter wyn dit is, dit het alles ’n invloed daarop.

“Ek’t al ’n 1969 Shiraz uit ons vinoteek geproe wat heerlik was en iemand, wat nou die dag ’n 40jaaroue Cabernet Sauvignon geproe het, het gesê die wyn proe so lekker, dit het nie eers Botox nodig nie!”

is, lê Marlize ook na aan die hart.

Dié bekostigbare wynreeks se naam kom van die werkerseende op die plaas wat die wingerde daagliks patrolleer en op ’n natuurlike wyse die slakke en ander plae onder beheer hou. . Knitting duel leads to warmth for hundreds Heart-felt concern for the many disadvantaged children in Cape Town was the motivating force behind hundreds of tiny jerseys being knitted ahead of the cold season.

The staff of Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital, Netcare N1 City Hospital and Charisma Healthcare Solutions lovingly crafted the muchneeded jerseys, which were recently donated to creches in Du Noon.

Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital manager Dirk Truter, who admits that he has yet to take up the art of knitting, explains that the initiative came about on Mandela Day (18 July) last year when Charisma Healthcare Solutions challenged the hospitals to a knitting duel in aid of needy children.

The winning team could donate all the jerseys to a charity of their choice.

“Despite a good effort by Netcare

N1 City Hospital and Charisma, the staff of Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital walked away as the winners and chose TLC Outreach Project as the beneficiary of the knitting drive,” says Truter.

TLC Outreach Project in Table View is a non profit, welfare organisation, registered with the department of social development. Their purpose is to care for destitute children at risk.

The jerseys were handed to a grateful Colleen Pietersen of TLC, with Lieutenant Elizabeth Munro of the Table View police who works closely with TLC on a number of initiatives, in attendance.

“The enthusiasm with which the staff of Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital tackled this project is indicative of their commitment to caring for the people of our communities,” says Truter.

Disability career fair has assistive devices A new element to the second annual disability career fair, is the expo of assistive devices that will present more opportunities for persons with disabilities and their employers.

The fair is taking place this Saturday (16 June) at the Artscape Theatre Centre.

This event aims to create a career-related information and resources platform for persons with

disabilities, employers and suppliers of assistive devices. The event provides an opportunity to learn about the world of work, resources, products and information for persons of all ages across disabilities.

Having a go at golf LEON STEENKAMP

Learners who have not had the opportunity to learn the difference between a birdie and an albatross are being taught the game of golf thanks to their school’s partnership with a local golf course.

The Atlantic Beach Golf Club held its first open day for learners of the Sinenjongo High School, in Joe Slovo on 9 May. “We will be hosting a group from the school every second month with the aim to identify and develop golfing talent among the learners,” explains Celeste Lloyd-Jones, general manager of the Atlantic Beach Golf Club.

The first group of between 15 and 20 children were shown the golfing ropes by the club’s resident professional Reinhardt van Zyl. “I was very impressed with their etiquette and discipline.

They listened carefully to what I explained and were very interested in what was being taught. I identified three guys who showed potential and interest in the sport,” Van Zyl says. “One must remember that these guys have never held a golf club or hit a golf ball. They play soccer or maybe rugby,” he added.

The group were also showed what it takes to manage a golf club and its accompanied hospitality services.

“We feel these talented youngsters must be exposed to not only

to create job opportunities,” Lloyd-Jones adds.

Van Zyl will identify the golf talents in each of the next three groups that will visit the club in the remainder of the year.

“All these learners will then be invited back for a clinic,” he says.

Sinenjongo High School has been the major beneficiary of the Rabie Property Group’s (RPG) corporate social investment programme for the last five years.

Owners of the Atlantic Beach Golf Club Allen Usher and William Taylor, both have business ties with RPG and thus decided to also support this programme.

Taalkomitee versoek borde in drie tale Die Stad Kaapstad se pas gestigte taalkomitee is besig om maatreëls in plek te stel om te verseker dat inwoners gebruikersvriendelike en maklik verstaanbare boodskappe van die Stad in hul taal van voorkeur ontvang.

Die tale is Engels, Xhosa en Afrikaans. Die taalkomitee, wat uit agt DA-lede, twee ANC-lede, een Vryheidsfront-lid, een lid van die Al Jama-ah Moslem-politieke party en een ACDP-lid bestaan, wil hierdeur verseker die Stad doen sy verbintenis tot inklusiwiteit gestand.

Die komitee het ’n mosie aan die betrokke portefeuljekomitees voorgelê, waarvolgens inwoners en toeriste op paaie langs toegangsroetes na Kaapstad daarna kan uitsien om binnekort deur borde in al drie tale verwelkom te word.

Die tekens, “Welcome, Wamkelekile, Welkom”, sal ook aan internasionale toeriste die trots op die stad se diversiteit aandui.

Die provinsiale en nasionale regering sal toestemming moet verleen vir die oprigting van hierdie kennisgewingborde langs paaie onder hul jurisdiksie.

“Min stede in Suid-Afrika kan roem op so ’n ryk geskiedenis en kultuur soos ons, om nie te praat van die diverse samestelling van Kaapstad se inwoners nie. Dít maak ons stad so uniek,” sê raadslid Leonore van der Walt, voorsitter van die Stad se veelparty-taalkomitee. PenBev brings warmth Residents of the Emmanuel Care Centre in Atlantis for physically and mentally challenged individuals will not have to face the bitter cold unaided this winter, thanks to the generous donation of wall heaters and blankets by the Parow plant of Peninsula Beverage Company (PenBev), the local bottler of the Coca-Cola Company’s products in the Western and Northern Cape.

PenBev in Parow have adopted the Emmanuel Care Centre in Atlantis as part of their Live for a Dif-

ference campaign.

Marie Petersen, the Emmanuel Care Centre manager, was concerned by the looming winter months and the effect the cold would have on the centre’s occupants as the newly developed centre had no infrastructure in place yet to keep the residents warm.

Residents of the centre range in age from 12 months to adulthood.

“Many of the people at Emmanuel Day Care Centre stay with us their whole lives, until they pass on,” Petersen says.

“The severity of their disabilities is of such a nature that they

can never be placed out into other facilities.”

Petersen has compiled a wish list of items needed by the centre and was very grateful for PenBev’s contribution. “Compiling the list was a task on its own, as we need so much and yet we do not want to impose.”

Other items on the wish list include a gas stove, computers, petrol weed eater and non-perishable foods, to name but a few.

The event held at Gardens Commercial High School saw the final 12 couples, each representing a different school, dance their hearts out for top honours.

This year the contestants were also interviewed before the start of the final event giving the audience an insight into how they experienced the dance training and the competition.

During the first round of dancing the quick step, rumba and mambo couples had the opportunity to tame the nerves whilst the judges’ comments and suggestions helped them to improve their performance in round two.

After the second round of dancing the couples were whittled down to eight with the dancers from Table View, Tygerberg, St John’s CBC and Harold Cressy not making the grade.

After another elimination round which saw The Settlers, Gardens Commercial and Sarepta drop out it was left to the couples from DF Malan, Chesterhouse, Sea Point, Cape Town High School and Durbanville to dance for the title.

Kids, take your holidays in Cape nature The City of Cape Town’s Blaauwberg Nature Reserve and Table Bay Nature Reserve will be hosting a fun and entertaining holiday programme during the June/July school holidays.

The programme will run over a period of two weeks from Monday 25 June to Friday 6 July.

The aim of the holiday programme is to teach children about the environment in a fun, but educational way, with art and craft activities as well as theme-based games.

The first week will be spent at the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve where children will learn about sea shells and how to make interesting crafts from these. They will also learn about a few local reptiles and make their own reptile box.

The week will end with a good workout and an opportunity to save the unique and irreplaceable fynbos by helping with the removal of invasive plant species and enjoying the beautiful view from the top of Blaauwberg Hill.

During the second week the programme will continue at Table Bay

Good food, holiday fun The Summer Greens Residents’ Association will be hosting a holiday programme for local children from 25 to 29 June.

The programme starts with a games day with local social workers and volunteers on Monday 25 June.

Hot dogs will be served for lunch.

The rest of the programme is: (Tuesday 26 June) road safety talk by the traffic department’s Geraldine Boswell. Lunch: Spaghetti Bolognaise; (Wednesday 27 June) Molo Songololo/Morning Centipede. Lunch: soup and bread; (Thursday 28) A talk by Captain Estelle Kock and Warrant Officer Daphne Dell of the Milnerton police.

Lunch: sausage smoortjie and rice; (Friday 29 June) programme closure and handing over of certificates. Lunch: roast chicken, potatoes and vegetables.

All of these activities will start at 09:30 at the Summer Greens Community Hall.

In the afternoon the programme will be organised by the social workers.

Nature Reserve.

At the Rietvlei section of the reserve, participants will visit various bird hides while learning about the bird life found there. They will also have the chance to test their survival skills in an “Ultimate Survivor” game.

Activities, which are all weather dependent, will start at 09:00 and end at around 12:30 daily. The programme will be aimed at children

between the ages of eight and 14 years. Due to limited space, bookings should be made in advance.

Cat show also collecting winter warmers

This drawing was made last year for the cat show, as part of the Cats in Need theme.

A championship cat show is presented by the All Breeds Cat Club (ABCC) on Saturday (16 June) at the Stellenberg Church hall in Mountainview Drive.

The show runs from 09:00 to 16:00 and admission is R10 for adults and R5 for children and pensioners.

In keeping with the show theme of “Winter Woolies”, the club will be collecting “Winter Warmers” for the less fortunate, cats and humans alike.

ABCC will be selling cat blankets at R10 each, as part of their Animal Welfare Awareness drive. Please bring new and/or used blankets/cat beds, etc. on show morning.

There will also be a collection basket in the foyer, where the public can place “Winter Warmers” for humans like blankets, winter clothing and shoes.

These will be handed over to the Shiloh Synergy welfare organisation who manages several welfare projects including creches, children’s homes, school children support, animal welfare and disaster management.

Winter warmth here is much-needed and will be appreciated. This is an opportunity to clear the wardrobe of everything “so last season”, and warm the cold shivers of those who have so little.

‘Shout’ to help stop crime A local school has challenged other schools in the Western Cape to celebrate Youth Day by supporting the Schools Unite Against Crime project.

The initiative is part of the Shout Campaign which promotes a safer and crime-free South Africa. Shout is the brain child of musician Danny K and kwaito star Kabelo Mabalane who felt something had to be done about crime in the country following the murder of music legend Lucky Dube.

Melkbosstrand Private School is challenging other schools in the province to organise their learners at 13:00 on 15 June and sing the song You’re the Voice which is also performed by various well-known SA artists to

Pak die skuld op die skuldige Hoekom word die hond of leeu altyd doodgemaak as hy iemand ernstig beseer of doodbyt? Meestal het die dier bloot binne sy aard as roofdier opgetree, nie uit die bloute ’n moordenaar geword nie.

Is die vraag nie eerder: Hoekom was dit vir hierdie dier nodig om soos ‘n “moordenaar” op te tree nie?

Soos in verlede week se geval toe ’n vrou in Uitenhage se arm bykans deur ’n boerboel afgebyt is, kan die vinger meestal in die rigting van die eienaar gewys word: die hek was nie behoorlik toe nie, die hond was nie aan ’n leiband nie, die heinings was nie dig genoeg nie.

Maar nee, te dikwels kry veral groot honde nie genoeg aandag nie of is nie goed genoeg gedissiplineer nie , wat tot die dier se ongelukkige optrede – en sy dood – lei.

Op grond hiervan alleen, maar veral wanneer ’n hond iemand byt, behoort eienaars swaar beboet en onbevoeg verklaar te word om ooit weer ’n hond aan te hou.

Is dit bloot omdat so iets amper onmoontlik is om te polisieer, dat die hond altyd aan die kortste ent trek? ’n Verantwoordelike, liefdevolle troeteldiereienaar se hond sal selde gedwing voel om iemand aan te val, of die vryheid hê om dit te doen.

Ons pleit by ons lesers om hulle diere lief genoeg te hê om nie toe te laat dat hulle iemand aanval en met die dood daarvoor moet boet nie.

Dumping puppies says a lot about you It was with sheer and utter shock that I read the article in last week’s newspaper (“Seeking cute pups’ mum”, TygerBurger 6 June) about an animal charity looking for the owner of dogs whose pups were abandoned.

The five puppies were found on a sheet on the doorstep of a church and one of them didn’t survive the ordeal.

Just looking at the photo of three of the puppies in the newspaper gives one a warm, caring feeling. It is hard to imagine that any person could be so heartless to leave the small dogs to fend for themselves.

The cold and wet weather and the fact that all five puppies could have died as a result of his or her actions, clearly didn’t cross the mind of this cold-hearted person.

Look, I understand that people might not have the means to look after another three dogs when they already have one. There are ways to deal with such a situation. Adoption, a newspaper advertisement or even a free internet advert could have helped the “dilemma” the owner of the puppies clearly found

himself in.

Instead, it was easier to dump the puppies and forget about them. And this breaks my and I believe many other peoples’ hearts.

If you don’t want puppies, have your dog spayed. If that is too much of an effort or you are not interested in spending the money, you are not worthy to be a dog owner.

Just like you and I, dogs feel the cold, they too get hungry and they too feel rejected.

They say you can tell a lot about a man by the company he keeps. This is especially true when you are talking about the company of the furry, four-legged kind. The type of dog a person has, and how he treats it, reveal a lot about that person. And this sort of action tells me exactly what type of person we are dealing with here.

Adopt-a-Pet appealed to the owner to call them to have the mother sterilised and I do hope that this time the coward will have the guts to come forward and do the right thing.

Waarom al die padklagtes?

Oral waar ek in my omgewing ry, sien ek konstruksie aan paaie. Veral die rehabilitasie van Strandweg tussen Blackheath en Kuilsrivier, blyk ’n groot projek te wees. Nou weet ek dat as dit by ons paaie kom, het almal klagtes oor die toestand daarvan, tekort daaraan en sommer net die algemene instandhouding van ons paaie. Ons vra dat daar iets aan gate in die paaie gedoen word, of meer bane geskep word. Dus vind ek dit nou verbasend dat die Stad Kaapstad ons paaie verbeter en daaraan werk, daar nog klakouse is, wat kla oor die verkeersdruk op die paaie waar konstruksie plaasvind. Onge-

duld en verontagsaming van padtekens in konstruksie-areas is nou aan die orde van die dag. Mense, kom ons wees net geduldig.

Kom ons handhaaf die spoedgrense op die paaie waar konstruksie plaasvind en kom ons gee ander motoriste geleentheid om by paaie aan te sluit. Te veel motors jaag in areas waar die spoedgrens duidelik as 40 km per uur aangedui word of ongeduldig word as ander by die spoedperk hou. Uiteindelik is dit ons, die padgebruiker, wat by die verbeterings gaan baatvind.

Ego-funksionering kan rêrig nogal destruktief wees, of dit nou in ‘Groot Ego-’ of ‘klein ego’-formaat gebeur.

Ons wipplank met soveel gemak tussen Arrogansie (ek weet beter) en Hulpeloosheid (ek kan nie), dat ons nie eers agtergekom het dat die spiraal afwaarts in plaas van opwaarts neig nie.

Hoe bou ’n mens nou ’n gesonde nasie met so ’n sig-sag-slingerbestaan?

Dié van ons wat ver kan sien en diep kan hoor en gewillig, gereed en gerat is om hande te vat om Suid-Afrika te laat werk, moet dalkies moed bymekaarskraap en begin aksie neem.

Daarvoor gaan nie net Geloofspronge nodig wees nie, maar Geloofsvlugte.

Bubbly, vibrant and full of energy – that is your first impression of Charné Hugo (21) from Plattekloof, even though she has to undergo a major scoliosis operation.

Wheelchair-bound Charné’s operation is scheduled to take place in August at the Constantia Mediclinic and the Hugo family is putting together a few fantastic fundraisers to raise the money which is still needed. They are calling on the public to support the events.

Although some medical costs are

covered by the family’s medical aid, an additional R70 000 is required, mainly for prosthesis implants, which is not covered.

“The operation is needed because the current implants need to be removed under surgery, as these had snapped during the growth period, causing collapse of the upper body,” says Johan Hugo, Charné’s father.

“New implants must replace these, which will secure her body to remain upright. Charné had undergone a similar operation when she was 11 years old but now needs another one.”

Charné is known as “the girl in the wheelchair who sings”. She be-

came paralysed when she was four months old, when complications occurred during a third heart operation.

But not even this could dampen Charné’s spirits. She started her professional singing career when she was eight years old. Her first major exposure came at the age of 10 when she was one of the performing artists on the album that was released in aid of the Aids activist, Nkosi Johnson.

There will be no zoo left in the City of Cape Town, once the Tygerberg Zoo finally closes its doors at the end of November.

A disheartening thought for a city of international stature, but nonetheless an unavoidable reality for owner Lorraine Spence who is struggling to make ends meet.

The 24-hectare land located just off Klipheuwel Road in the vicinity of Joostenbergvlakte, was recently sold for an undisclosed sum to an agricultural machinery company.

According to Spence, high maintenance costs and diminished visitor numbers over the years have forced her hand. She added that she owed the City of Cape Town a small fortune.

“At one point our rates and taxes climbed over the R4 000 mark – in an area where we received no services.

“With time and the continual maintenance of the zoo it became impossible to keep up,” she said.

The zoo was started by her deceased husband John Spence 33 years ago, and back in the glory days it was brimming with hundreds of visitors.

“Back then a visit to the zoo was still part of the school curriculum and buses of children were brought here for educational purposes,”said Spence.

At its zenith the zoo housed 1 400 animals representing 280 species.

Many of the Tygerberg Zoo’s current inhabitants will be relocated to the Drakenstein Lion Park.

Her eight chimpanzees – all hand-reared by herself – and other primates will also be moved here where Spence will open a new park called Chimp Haven.

While transfer is pending, the zoo will remain open at reduced gate fees.

Anderson doesn’t know how many members were at the club when they moved from Woodbridge Island to Milnerton Lagoon, but he does know the interest in canoeing has been growing year on year.

Ready to rock after time­out LOUISA STEYL

Snare van die Suburbs are back.

After a year’s silence, the boys have been working hard on their live performances and are gearing up to do some big things in the near future.

Christopher Palmer, the band’s frontman, explains that he was away for work during this time.

“When we got back we decided to work hard on our live shows for three months,” he says.

The band are also enjoying a fuller sound thanks to the addition of guitarist, Manfred Klose.

“Manfred brings the live performance,” says drummer, Pierre Erasmus.

Snare van die Suburbs will start recording their first fulllength album in September in Ladismith with Jo Ellis.

The band are also heading into new territory, trying to play venues they haven’t played before.

Pierre points out that the band would like to take their acoustic sets to wine farms and other similar venues.

“We pride ourselves on the

fact that we can do an acoustic set well,” Chris says, pointing out that they are a “rock ’n roll” band to start off with.

In the two months they have been back on stage, Snare have played Die Boer, Rabbit Hole, Blizzards, Hidden Cellar and Aandklas.

With sponsorship from Bondiblu, the band also have band merchandise available at their shows.

Chris says along with working on their live performances, Snare have also been working on their sound.

“We are trying to be more professional than we were,” he says.

No mean feat when three of the members have day jobs as teachers.

Chris is a primary school teacher, while Pierre will be teaching high school from next year and Nico Claassen, the band’s bassist is a high school teacher in Hermanus.

“There’s a difference between being in a band and being an artist,” Pierre says, adding: “We want to go for the artist thing.”

The third entry in the animated Madagascar franchise finds the tight-knit group of animals joining a travelling circus in order to get back home.

CT jazz meets The French Elephants The Big Time!, a unique cross-cultural music exchange between South Africa and France will be on at the Artscape.

The show will see some of Cape Town’s top young jazz talent perform with internationally acclaimed, Parisbased quartet, The Elephants, at the Artscape Opera House on Youth Day on Saturday.

Also included on the bill is local jazz legend guitarist Errol Dyers with George Werner on piano, Peter Ndala on bass and Carlo Fabe on drums.

Where musical innovation meets youth empowerment, in the Big Time! Project, versatile French jazz musician Braka and his quartet, The Elephants, have joined forces with South African musicians Marcus Wyatt and Gareth Walwyn along with young brass band players from Cape Town’s townships and Delft to form a unique ensemble.

Presenting a fusion of French ballroom, Latin and Cape jazz sounds, the 11-piece Big Time band features young musicians chosen from the Delft Big Band, Little Giants and IMAD to collaborate with The Elephants quartet.

The Big Time! project

forms part of a multifaceted bilateral collaboration between France and South Africa which will be jointly organised by both countries, concentrating on culture and the arts but also including sport, trade and novel approaches in the fields of education, science and business.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport is a partner as part of the June 16 Youth Day Celebrations.

The French Season in South Africa continues through November and will be followed by a South African Season in France between May and December 2013 in which the Big Time Band will travel to France.

On Youth Day, June 16, concert-goers will also be entertained by young Cape jazz artists: the Oceanview Youth Jazz Band, Ceres Crusaders, Stellenzicht Youth Band, Line Up and African Sky from Saldanha Bay and Omega Brass Band from Mitchells Plains, in the foyer prior to the show.

With prizes to the value of R35 000 up for grabs, the competition will run until the end of the year.

Two spooky twists in ghostly one­acts CBC St John’s will present Dark Moon, two ghostly one-act plays, on Thursday.

Dark Moon is a production by the CBC St John’s Parklands drama club under the guidance of the very accomplished Marinda Claasen.

The two one-act plays were workshopped by the members of the drama club and both are rooted in folklore with a spooky twist.
