HOME SECURITY: MOST BURGLARIES DUE TO POOR SECURITY
Be safe as houses RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj
“A
t least 80% of all burglaries occur in homes with poor or no security. It’s a fact.” This is according to David Harris, chairman of the Table View Community Policing Forum (CPF). Harris was addressing residents at a public meeting organised by the CPF’s sector 2 subforum last week, held at the CBC St John’s Parklands College. Harris said home security is extremely important, and he therefore also encouraged residents to join in the fight against crime. “Crime prevention is everyone’s responsibility and it pays to be part of a street com-
mittee. Also, you get to know your neighbours,” he said. He also encouraged residents to sign up for their local neighbourhood watches. “This is a life-changing experience and (they are) usually a wonderful bunch of people. In this sector we have two good neighbourhood watches and the contribution they make is unbelievable.” He said that one of the crimes with which street committees and neighbourhood watches are currently battling is theft out of motor vehicles. “This is a huge problem due to people leaving their valuables inside their cars. “Do not leave anything valuable in your vehicle. If you do, you will lose it.
“If possible, garage your vehicle and secure your garage by locking it,” he insisted. Residents were also reminded to refrain from putting out their dustbins the night before refuse collection day. “This is traditionally high crime time, and that is because people leave bins out the day before. Did you know you can use a bin as a ladder? It is very important to take the bin out on the day, and put it back the same day.” The monthly community clean-up is another way in which people can help. “This is a great initiative and several organisations are participating in it, including the local ratepayers’ association, council and CPF. #We♥Tyger is back with Bags of Hope There are so many phenomenal women with whom we share our daily lives – our mothers, wives, children, neighbours, best friends – most of them anchors who help steer our lives with steadfast care and love. With August being Women’s Month, we at TygerBurger and our sister publications (People’s Post and City Vision) wish to honour the women in our lives by honouring those women who have experienced and beaten the worst of life’s hardships and ills, emerging as survivors, proud and dignified. Please help us to help restore a little of this dignity as we once again embark on a special monthly campaign by providing Bags of Hope – literally, handbags filled with all the essentials a rape or abuse survivor might need. Two years ago the Chill Room in our offices was filled to the brim with these Bags of Hope, which contained everything from bras and panties to sanitary pads, perfume and talc, washcloths and soap, toothpaste and chocolates. In some cases, the bags contained a handwritten note wishing the receiver well on her journey to recovery and a life outside of abuse and violence. We are hoping to recreate this female pantry and be able to donate all the items we receive to a charity of our readers’ choosing. For this, we are once more calling for help from our loyal readers – those caring people who have supported our monthly campaigns so faithfully since the beginning of the year. So, if you have a handbag or two and the means to fill it with what you would have appreciated were you a recipient yourself, please bring it to our offices. We will ensure it goes to a place where it will bring light and joy amid pain and suffering. V Donate, and nominate your charity at briewe@tyg erburger.co.za. V Delivery is on the third floor of the Bloemhof Build ing at 112 Edward Street, and at Vangate Mall.
