TABLE VIEW SINKHOLE: BURST WATER PIPE CAUSES TAR TO COLLAPSE
That sinking feeling ...

ormally when one leaves for work in the morning, one can expect bumperto-bumper traffic, perhaps a faulty set of traffic lights or even a minor fender bender causing you to be late for work. On the other hand, a sinkhole in the middle of the road, is not necessarily among the most commonly cited reasons for being delayed. For Table View motorist Mandy Evard,
this is exactly what prevented her from reaching her destination a week ago. Evard, who owns a printing and signage company, was driving her Audi TT on Tuesday 1 August when she hit a puddle of water before sinking into the ground. The incident occurred at 07:15 on the corner of Jansens Road and Lark Crescent in Flamingo Vlei, opposite Table View High School. Evard had just dropped off her son and was on her way back home to take her other son to school when it happened, she says.
“Apparently a water pipe underneath the road had burst, which caused a huge hole under the road. The road started lifting slightly, but I didn’t see that. “There was a puddle of water, but I just thought it was from the rain. As I drove over it my car dropped,” she explains. Thankfully Evard was not harmed. However, her car was not so lucky. “The guy from the council arrived a few minutes later and he turned the water off,” Evard explains. The sinkhole was caused by a burst water pipe, she suspects.
Ward councillor Joy McCarthy says she was advised of water seeping from under the tar that morning. “I immediately advised the district manager of water and sanitation, who dispatched a repair team right away,” she says. She says water seeping from under the tar would probably be indicative of a pipe burst. “The water pressure then undermines the tar surface, causing the surface to subside, hence the urgency to notify the district manager,” McCarthy says.
