C

yclists on the West Coast can now make their way to work and back feeling safe and secure.

This is of course thanks to safety officers who have just been deployed to keep a watchful eye on the cycle lane stretching between Cape Town and Table View.

The lane follows Marine Drive and parts of the red MyCiTi Bus Route.

Last week the City of Cape Town’s Transport and Urban Development authority said it has deployed 10 dedicated officers on motorcycles to patrol this lane.

The officers are deployed as part of the Transport Enforcement Unit contingent to address safety hotspots along non-motorised transport routes, says Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport and urban development.

“This cycle lane is very popular among cyclists, and the officers have been deployed to improve the general safety of cyclists – in particular those who prefer to cycle alone or have to use the lane after hours,” says Herron.

The initiative, the first of its kind, was welcomed by the Table View Community Policing Forum (CPF). “I agree that this is a very good initiative for the safety of cyclists and joggers,” says David Harris, CPF chairperson.

The officers are permanently deployed, two shifts per day, and will work in close collaboration with internal role players within the City, as well as the South African Police Service.

The cycle lane is patrolled on a daily basis from 05:30 to 21:30. Some of the officers are deployed in vehicles and others patrol the cycle lane on motorcycles, Herron says. “Before the deployment of the officers, some members of the public complained about being targeted by opportunistic criminals along certain sections of the route, in particular in those areas which are deserted after hours.

Marilize Brink (15) from Monte Vista got the crowd cheering with her performance on Friday at the Cape Interprovincial Figure Skating Championships.

Goodwood from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 October, were hosted by the South African Figure Skating Association.

One of the most popular skaters who participated, and an obvious crowd favourite, was Gian-Quen Isaacs who started skating in 2012 at the tender age of seven years.

“She actually wanted to play ice hockey and joined a club, and two weeks later the coach told us that she has the potential to go far in figure skating,” her mother, Letitia Isaacs, says.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Williams, who has been working as a security officer for a decade now, recently came under fire from a group of armed robbers who blew up a drop safe at the Milnerton Mall. Williams, who attended the scene soon after hearing the explosion, was fired at during a chase down Knysna Road, Milnerton Central. His patrol vehicle sustained considerable damage. Williams, however, was lucky to escape unharmed.

Keon excels in classical music competition M

ozart, Beethoven and Bach are just a few of the great names that spring to mind when one think of classical music. But who knows? Perhaps in a few years from now, local West Cost classical musician, Keon Müller, just might be one of those greats at whom we will marvel.

Keon recently took part in the prestigious Samro Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition where he made his school, parents and community exceptionally proud.

The 29th national music competition proved that classical music in South Africa is alive and well, says Hilda Boonzaaier, chairperson of the Tygerberg branch of the South African Society for Music Teachers, the host of the competition.

The competition, which caters for learners up to the age of 13 years, was held at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre from Monday 25 to Friday 29 September.

Keon (13) from Bloubergstrand, who plays the clarinet, won second prize in the

competition.

Keon’s teacher is Charlene Saayman and his accompanist was Linda Claassen.

“I am a student of the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre and I play in their senior wind band and symphony orchestra.

“My dream is to become a professional musician,” the teenager says.

The competition consists of four categories, namely piano, strings, woodwind, and brass and other instruments (including classical guitar, recorder and percussion).

A total of 51 contestants reached the competition week, with all having to perform a baroque, a classical, and a South African work in the first two rounds.

The eight deserving finalists and winners were appointed based on their accumulated marks during the week of performances. “They rose to the occasion to deliver magnificent performances at the gala event,” says Boonzaaier. First prize, which includes a total of R15 000 in cash, went to Mike Wang from the Strand.

What a spectacle for learners!

The Table View Lions Club, in partnership with the Jonga Trust, recently screened the eyes of over 100 learners at a primary school in Atlantis.

A total of 101 Grade 5 learners at Protea Park Primary School in Atlantis recently had their eyes screened by Jonga Trust in partnership with the Table View Lions Club.

These screenings revealed that 13 learners require spectacles, says Liz Houston, club spokesperson.

“After the initial screening, the educator was advised where to place the learners with the refractions in the classroom to improve concentration, and they were then referred to an optometrist for spectacles,” she says.

After having achieved a top spot at the Miss Deaf South Africa pageant recently, Jody Lee Bell from Table View now has her eyes set on loftier goals.

The 24-year-old former learner at the Carel du Toit Centre in Tygerberg was awarded the title of second princess in the Miss Deaf SA pageant held recently.

Jody now hopes to enter the Miss Deaf Africa pageant, which is scheduled to take place in November 2018 in the Seychelles.

Designated sites for fireworks discharge approved by City

he City has approved 12 designated sites for the discharge of fireworks for Guy Fawkes, Diwali and New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The sites were approved in consultation with the various subcouncils and in accordance with the City’s bylaws.

The sites are: • Athlone Stadium parking area (eastern side), Klipfontein Road, Athlone • Wesfleur sports field, Reygersdal Drive, Atlantis • Bishop Lavis sports field, Lavis Drive, Bishop Lavis • Metropolitan sports grounds, Melkhout Street, Bonteheuwel • Blue Downs sports field • Maiden’s Cove parking area, Victoria Road, Camps Bay

We devote significant resources to ensuring that these events are incident free, but it is not just the City’s responsibility. Everyone needs to play a role. Furthermore, I call on fireworks enthusiasts to respect the rights of those who choose not to partake in these activities.

The designated fireworks sites allow us to supervise such activities in a controlled environment, which beats the alternative of a free-for-all, but Chinese lanterns increase the risk of fire or incident as they’re left to float into the air and could land just about anywhere. Milnerton police host career day H

igh Schools from across the Milnerton police cluster recently attended a career day hosted by the men and women in blue.

The day was open to Grade 11 learners interested in pursuing a career in the South African Police Service some day, says Captain Adriana Chandler, police spokesperson.

Several schools from the cluster were represented at the event, including Robinvale High and Atlantis Secondary School in Atlantis; Milnerton High, Westbank High and Schoonspruit High in Malmesbury; and Bloubergrand High and Blouberg International School.

Major General Aneeqah Jordaan, Milnerton cluster commander, shared a motivational message with the guests. “She motivated the learners by telling them to dream big and to achieve their dreams by making the right choices in life.

“She gave them some background about her professional career achievements and told them that her dream was always to become a general one day, and that she did so by working

very hard, with no criminal or disciplinary record,” Chandler says.

A total of 35 learners were treated to exhibitions by the police’s provincial Career Centre, as well as Mounted, Explosives, Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences units.

The police’s Air Wing and Forensics units also held displays while the police band entertained the guests.

“The learners also had the opportunity to interact with the police members,” Chandler says.

Various other stakeholders attended the event, including the Table View Community Policing Forum chairperson, David Harris, representatives of the Table View Police Station’s Youth Desk, the Department of Community Safety, school forums and local NGO, TLC. “The project received very positive feedback from the learners, as well as the external partners,” Chandler says.

The career day took place on Friday 13 October at the Table View Police Station.

Pedestrian safety once again came under the spotlight this past week, when a taxi knocked over a woman on one of the busy West Coast roads, causing serious injury to her leg.

The incident occurred on the corner of Blaauwberg Road and Raats Drive in Table View – usually a hive of activity during peak hour morning traffic.

Pedestrian safety a concern News of the accident was shared on social media soon after it happened, where it was alleged that the driver in question sped away from the scene.

This was confirmed by the police later in the day.

According to police, the pedestrian was crossing the road on her way to work. She

did not see the approaching vehicle.

“The vehicle drove into the lady, causing a serious leg injury. She was taken to a medical facility nearby.

A case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated. The incident occurred on Tuesday 11 October at 08:55. The incident also caused a delay in traffic.

The Dunoon Taxi Association (DTA) recently deployed marshals to this particular corner, as well as other street corners, in order to ensure taxi drivers adhere to the rules of the road.

The marshals were deployed after a series of meetings between the DTA and the Table View Ratepayers’ Association.

Teachers cook up a storm at Hirsh’s: Hirsch’s and The Big Green Egg recently hosted a

teachers’ cook-off between Buren High School, Curro High school, Milnerton High School and Edgemead High School, with each school having three to four participants cooking chicken and vegetable dishes. The competition was all about who would be the most creative with exactly the same ingredients. The winners of the competition were Jonathan Carelse and Paula Oosthuizen from Curro High School who created a sensational, well-seasoned chicken dish that was accompanied by butternut and mealies. The duo took home a R500 Hirsch’s voucher and various small prizes such as speakers, earphones and keyrings.

Hospital needs help to find families of two patients The Brooklyn Chest Hospital in Milnerton is currently trying to locate the relatives or friends of two of its patients.

Social worker Bukiwe Siyazi says that one of the patients, Randall David, nicknamed Perido, is about 35 years of age and was admitted to the chest hospital more than a year ago, on 25 October 2016.

He was admitted to the New Somerset Hospital in Cape Town prior to his admission to their facility, she says.

“He was found on the corner of Church and Rose streets in Cape Town. The patient used to work on taxis travelling between the N1 and the Vasco area,” says Siyazi.

Help root out cable and electricity theft M

embers of the public have been asked to assist the City of Cape Town in identifying the culprits responsible for electricity and cable theft.

This phenomenon occurs in many areas across the City, one of which is Joe Slovo Park in Milneron.

Last week the City’s Electricity Services Department said it continues to face an uphill battle with the vast amount of electricity tampering and cable theft that occurs in City-supplied areas across the metro, something which costs Cape Town dearly.

“The City calls on all residents to help stop this scourge,” says Xanthea Limberg, Mayco member for informal settlements, water and waste services and energy.

She says that over the past financial year to date, the City has dealt with nearly 6000 cases of electricity tampering and 3000 cases of cable theft. Accounts were adjusted to the value of R164 million, after it was found that customers had tampered with infrastructure to obtain electricity without paying for it, Limberg says.

In the City’s supply areas in Cape Town, there are very clear hotspots where theft occurs.

“Currently the areas with the biggest concentration of this illegal activity are Joe Slovo Park in Milnerton, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Philippi West and Weltevreden Valley.

Limberg says it should be noted, however, that tampering with electricity meters occurs all across the City.

“Illegal connections mainly occur either where there has not been an application for additional connections on a property, or where informal settlements are on land where the provision of electricity is not possible due to circumstances such as land ownership challenges, wetlands, and densities, among others.”

Limberg says cable theft damages electricity infrastructure and causes power supply disruptions to various communities on a regular basis. “Cable theft leaves our communities in darkness, puts our residents at risk of electric shock, and allows criminals to operate more easily, so we are truly appealing to all members of the public to assist us by reporting any suspicious activities near electricity infrastructure or providing any leads on electricity tampering.”

Parts of Milnerton Racecourse rehabilitated

arts of the Milnerton Racecourse recently underwent a process of rehabilitation thanks to a partnership between the City of Cape Town, Kenilworth Racing and the private sector.

The Milnerton Racecourse forms part of the Table Bay Nature Reserve, which is owned and managed by the City of Cape Town.

The southern portion of the site is, however, encircled by a horse-racing track, which is owned and run by Kenilworth Racing.

“In the interests of upgrading the racetrack and realigning it into a complete oval, negotiations were held between the City and Kenilworth Racing to cede a small section of land to Kenilworth Racecourse, in order to accommodate the upgrade.

“However, the section of land in question had high biodiversity value and as such, the City was reluctant to lose this portion of the nature reserve,” says Glynis Abrahams, spokesperson for Afrilandscapes, a provider of professional landscape services.

To offset this loss, Kenilworth Racing agreed to donate a 2.9ha portion of land within the track, which was zoned and ear-

“This land, although adjacent to the existing conservation area, was severely degrad-

ed due to a history of damaging activities and, as such, an extensive rehabilitation programme would need to be undertaken for it to serve its new purpose as part of the Milnerton Racecourse Nature Reserve.”

It was agreed that Kenilworth Racing would, at their expense, conduct a land-swap and rehabilitate the degraded portion of land.

AfriLandscapes was hired by Kenilworth Racing to assist in this rehabilitation project.

“The purpose of the land-swap and rehabilitation project is to ensure that species present in the lost site are able to grow in and populate the rehabilitation area, improving the habitat condition and ecological functioning of the area,” Abrahams says.

Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport and urban development, says: “Species that have been planted within the rehabilitation area were all sourced from the existing conservation area and lost site. This was to ensure the genetic integrity of the plant populations in the conservation area.”

Milnerton Players act out meaning of art and friendship Milnerton Players, a group of stage performers, are currently hosting a production called Art at the Milnerton Playhouse.

The hugely popular and long-running comedy by Yasmina Reza will be the second production this year at the playhouse and runs until Saturday 21 October.

The play is directed by award-winning actor Anton Schäfer.

The comedy, set in Paris, raises questions about the meaning of art and the

meaning of friendship, and concerns three long-time friends: Serge played by James King, Marc played by Martin Kluge, and Yvan played by Werner Steffen.

The play is Schäfer’s debut as a director and he has gathered a strong cast to play the three powerful male characters.

“With a cleverly created set using lighting as its focus, expect an evening of laughter and surprises, and some food for thought,” says a spokesperson.

Havana’s parents say they are proud of their daughter’s caring initiative.

“Like a true strategist, she conceptualised, initiated and implemented the whole process from start to finish, seamlessly and without any flaws. We’re so very proud of her,” they say.

How City should handle water crisis My first point that I would like to make is that I have reported many water leakages, not on my property but all over, especially Table View and Sunningdale.

The urgency with which they have been repaired and how the workers left the site have been pathetic – telling us that it is not their job to repair the site; someone else has to come and do it.

This City, in its endeavour to reach the World City Awards, omits to do those things that well serve the people who pay their salaries.

How do we know that the water they so easily spray on the plant life in-between the roads is not potable water, which in a windy city such as ours mostly lands on the road?

Then, we also need to take cognisance of the older people who still have houses and gardens. Imagine how they are coping?

Just like all these democratically elected officials, once you vote for them, they decide they no longer need to share their thoughts with us and can do as they wish.

What comes to mind is the R8 million that was spent on changing the logo.

This water situation is due mainly to the poor future planning, and if they had taken the trouble to listen to the experts, they could have made better plans way back, when it was known that water would cause the next war.

Typically, they now want to close the gate after the horse has bolted.

SA drivers do not obey rule of law Re: (“Nearly 100 taxi drivers arrested”, 04/10).

I believe the authorities have taken the right route in arresting taxi drivers for reckless driving and other offences committed.

I have always said the problem in Cape Town and the rest of the country is the absence of visual policing.

We know by now that some South African drivers do not respect the rule of law. We experience on a daily basis drivers jumping red robots, not stopping at stop signs, not following the proper distance and, my favourite, drivers on their cellphones.

We also have pedestrians on our national roads waiting for taxis and lift-club vehicles to pick them up. As I understood the traffic law (before 1994) no person is allowed to walk on or cross a national road.

I am of the opinion that speed does not kill. I have been driving in Europe and the USA, at times exceeding 200km/h. Italy has recently increased the speed limit on their national roads from 130 to 150km/h. Our problem is that drivers are not disciplined and do not respect the law, together with the absence of traffic officials.

South Africa won’t be able to stop the carnage on our roads.

Blaauwberg Road traffic at standstill Traffic on Sandown, Parklands Main, West Coast (R27) and Plattekloof roads, in and out of Blaauwberg Road, is at a standstill. Even at midday and over weekends, these roads are so congested and slow moving they are rendered obsolete.

With so much more building taking place all around Parklands Main and Sandown roads in Table View, these roads – already non-functional – will become completely useless. It is time the City of Cape Town made an effort to improve infrastructure, as the MyCiTi alone is not helping to alleviate these problems.

Bullies can’t take away your dignity I just want to respond to that ‘distressed’ person’s letter about bullying in the workplace. I work at the traffic law enforcement agency and I’ve also experienced bullying.

I’ve been called a prostitute by one officer in front of a person to whom I had issued a fine, and the senior was laughing about it. A female officer threw a cap in my face

during a meeting, in front of senior officers, who did nothing. One male senior officer spoke to me disrespectfully and pointed his finger in my face in front of the chief traffic officer, and nothing was done. It seems they don’t know anything about human skills and ethical behaviour.

You need to stand up for yourself, because no one else will. Remember, they can’t take away your dignity and they can’t question your values.

As mad as I am about behaviour like that, I just remove myself from interaction with those ‘rude officers’.

Wizard of Oz a magical experience On Saturday I went to see The Wizard of Oz at the Artscape. I was mesmerised by the quality of the performances! Each player’s performance was perfect. The decor was well done and the music beautiful. ‘Dorothy’, the star of the show, gave an excellent performance and I couldn’t find fault with anything she did. As a matter of fact, the whole presentation was flawless! Pity the event has come to an end, as I would have loved to go and be overwhelmed again. Congratulations to all involved!

Sassa card valid beyond expiry T

ygerBurger printed an article in our edition of Wednesday 11 October calling on all Sassa beneficiaries to have their Sassa cards renewed by December.

The headline and some of the information contained in the article is not factually correct, as it was translated from English into Afrikaans. The printed version has since led to some consternation among worried beneficiaries.

To rectify any misleading information, TygerBurger is publishing the following exact statement as received from the agency’s spokesperson, Shivani Wahab, for our readers’ urgent attention: “The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has been made aware that social grant beneficiaries are being advised to take a new bank card, as the SASSA card will expire in December. SASSA wants to reassure all social grant beneficiaries that the existing SASSA social grant card (the card with the South African flag colours and Coat of Arms on it) is the only SASSA payment card and will continue to work even beyond the expiry date printed on the card. No beneficiary should therefore be coerced into taking a new card. SASSA only issues one card and does not endorse or support any other bank cards.

“SASSA would like to take this opportunity to set the record straight regarding recent media reports about illegal deductions as well as the expiry of the SASSA card. The SASSA payment card operates like most bank cards and social grant beneficiaries are able to enter into debit order agreements for products/services, and have payments effected from their accounts. Many services, such as marketing of pre-paid airtime, pre-paid electricity and loans are targeted directly at social grant beneficiaries, with the repayments coming off their accounts,” Wahab says.

“The challenge faced by SASSA is that in some cases, the financial products are sold to social grant beneficiaries without them understanding the full implications of what they are agreeing to. When the grant is paid, the loan repayments for products like pre-paid airtime come off before the beneficiary can access the grant, then the beneficiary complains to SASSA. SASSA has gone out of its way to resolve these complaints, in order to assist the beneficiaries.

“SASSA wishes to stress that the only direct deduction from a social grant which is permitted is a deduction for funeral policy premiums which is managed under Regulation 26 (A) of the Social Assistance Act 2004.

The regulation allows for one deduction, which may not exceed 10% of the value of the grant, from the adult grants (old age, war veterans and permanent disability grants) only.

“No direct deductions for funeral policy premiums may be effected from any temporary grant or child grant. There are about 700 000 funeral policy deductions which take place monthly. It must be made clear that SASSA does not offer or endorse any funeral policies, however, any qualifying beneficiary is free to take out a policy.

Through Regulation 26 (A), SASSA offers a facility for the payment of the monthly premium, but this is done only with the written consent of the beneficiary.

“SASSA wants to reiterate that it does not provide loans, funeral insurance, prepaid products or any financial services.

The public is advised to contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 or its Facebook and Twitter pages if uncertain about anything.

“With regards to the Parow Civic Centre pay point, the facility is under renovation.

Therefore beneficiaries were informed of the Goodwood venue as the nearest point.

Alternatively, beneficiaries can do withdrawals at any Shoprite, certain Pick n Pay or SASSA pay points where there will be no fee incurred for withdrawals.”

CapeGate Charity Run The annual CapeGate Clicks Charity Run was held on Saturday 14 October in Brackenfell. The popular run was, as always, well supported by both young and old and was a great day out for the entire family. Richard Roberts at-

tended the event to snap a few pictures of the runners after completing the race. The run included a 5km, 10km and 21km race. A prize-giving event was also held after the run, with lucky draws that were open to all.

Local musician Chad Saaiman kept the crowd entertained at this past weekend’s CapeGate Clicks Charity Run by performing some of his hit songs.

Aansoekers moet ervaring hê van die fasilitering van geakkrediteerde korttermyn-beroepsvaardighede, met uiteindelike werkplasing, onder werklose jeug of dié wat skool verlaat het, en in hierdie ouderdomsgroep val.

3. Mense wat met gestremdhede leef: Verskaffing van ondersteuning en hulptoestelle aan mense wat met gestremdhede leef.

Aansoekers moet ervare wees op die gebied van assessering, opleiding en voorsiening van gepaste hulptoestelle vir die ondersteuning van postuur. Dienste wat verskaf word, moet ouerbevoegheidsopleiding insluit wat betref die neersit en oorlaai van mense wat met gestremdhede betref.

4. Bemagtiging van mans: Programme wat daarop gemik is om mans te betrek by kwessies van gendergeweld en die uitdaging van stereotipes wat geweld teen vroue en kinders versterk.

Voorstelle vir hulptoelaes moet skriftelik op ’n amptelike aansoekvorm gedoen word (beskikbaar

by ALLE subraadskantore en aanlyn - www.capetown.gov.za/grants-in-aid) en besonderhede van die projek(te) spesifiseer, insluitende die doel en ligging daarvan. Projekvoorstelle moet tot munisipale verantwoordelikhede beperk wees en die strategiese doelwitte van die Stad bevorder soos uiteengesit in die GOP, die strategie vir ekonomiese groei en strategie vir maatskaplike ontwikkeling, asook die Stad se pogings ondersteun om ’n geleentheidstad, ’n veilige stad, ’n omgeestad, ’n inklusiewe stad en ’n goed bestuurde stad te bou.

Alle aansoekers moet oor ’n bewese loopbaangeskiedenis van minstens twee jaar beskik.

Aansoekers moet realisties wees wanneer hulle hul voorleggings saamstel aangesien fondse beperk is, nie alle aansoekers befondsing sal ontvang nie en die Stad nie verplig is om die hele voorstel te befonds nie.

Die volgende bedrag is vir toewysing beskikbaar: R6,8 miljoen.

Die minimum bedrag per aansoek per projek is R15 000. Die Stad moedig organisasies aan om aansoek te doen om groter bedrae, bv. R100 000 en meer, in die lig van die totale bedrag wat vir befondsing beskikbaar is.

Water maiden comes to life

ie Dans van die Watermeid (The Dance of the Water Maiden) by Amee Lekas will soon come to life as a full-fledged production at the Baxter Theatre Centre.

The production comes from Lekas’s debut script, which was snatched up by the Nasionale Afrikaanse Teater-inisiatief (NATi) and the Baxter Theatre for further development, from brief extracts from 14 scripts.

Die Dans van die Watermeid is a heartbreaking story set against the backdrop of the picturesque town of Willowmore in the arid Klein Karoo of Lekas’s childhood. The story offers a unique look at the people from the region, in a script that is powerful without undermining the inherent simplicity.

Lekas completed the text under the mentorship of award-winning playwright Saartjie Botha.

Throughout the process she was afforded the opportunity to delve deeper into the world of the water nymph – a mythical figure who was not only a messenger, but an integral part of the community’s history.

Furthermore, the story revolves around how the community holds onto their superstitions in spite of the influence of the church. “Only in my anxiety and frustration as an artist did I first recognise the pain of others. Purely through the grace of telling the story of Die Dans van die Watermeid

did I have the opportunity to create something from my own distress in the hope that people will become aware of the pain of those around them,” says Lekas of writing the text.

Jason Jacobs, who was recently awarded the Kunste Onbeperk award for a new voice in theatre, is the director, under the mentorship of director and CEO of the Baxter Theatre Centre, Lara Foot.

The cast includes Rehane Abrahams, Abduragman Adams, Elton Landrew, Ephraim Gordon, Gretchen Ramsden, Celeste Matthews and Deidre Jantjies, with the costumes, set and lighting being designed by award-wining designers Birrie le Roux and Patrick Curtis. The production’s run will coincide with the second Teksmark of Kunste Onbeperk, supported by NATi and the Baxter Theatre.

Knowing cancer’s ‘big five’ W

ith October being Women’s Health Awareness Month, Cansa highlights the five leading types of cancer that indiscriminately afflict women in South Africa – breast, cervical, colorectal, uterine, and lung cancer.

Elize Joubert, Cansa CEO, states: “Early detection and diagnosis reduce the severity of the disease and also decreases the mortality rate.

Research has shown that regular breast self-examination plays an important role in discovering breast cancer, compared to finding a breast lump by chance.”

Both breast and cervical cancer have been identified as a national priority with increasing incidences occurring. Approximately 19.4 million women aged 15 years and older live at risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer – the cancer most affecting women in South Africa.

“We encourage all women to conduct regular self-examinations once a month. Cansa advocates a mammogram every year for all women from age 40 for purposes of nonsymptomatic breast screening.

“Women 55 years and older should change to having a mammogram every two years – or have the choice to continue with an annual mammogram,” Joubert says.

The second most common cancer among women in South Africa is cervical cancer, caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).

Cansa strongly recommends all women who have been sexually active should start having pap smears between the ages of 18 and 20 years, and pap smears may cease at the age of 70 years if the individual has had two normal pap smears within the last five years. These are uncomfortable but painless. They help lower the risk of cervical cancer and do not merely detect it early.

Colorectal or colon cancer is the third most common cancer affecting women in SA. Changes in bowel habits (diarrhoea/constipation), rectal bleeding or blood in stools and persistent abdominal discomfort (cramps, gas or pain) are among some of the warning symptoms of colorectal cancer.

Cancer of the uterus, also known as endometrial cancer or uterine cancer, is the fourth most common cancer affecting women and occurs in the tissue of the endometrium – the lining of the uterus.

Joubert explains: “Again, we advise that should any of the following warning signs appear, they should be investigated further by a medical practitioner: abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge, and pain in the pelvis or abdomen especially when urinating or during sexual intercourse.”

Lastly, there is lung cancer. Statistics reveal that the more a person smokes, the greater the risk of developing lung cancer.

It’s also more likely to develop in people who start smoking at a young age. However, if someone stops smoking, the risk of developing lung cancer drops dramatically. After about 15 years, the chance of developing the

Dr Jackie Smilg of the Radiological Society of South Africa’s (RSSA) sub-specialty group, the Breast Imaging Society of South Africa (BISSA), adds: “The need for early and accurate detection simply cannot be emphasised enough.”

The goal of screening tests for breast cancer is to find it before it causes symptoms.

Breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be smaller and still confined to the breast.

The size of a breast cancer and how far it has spread are some of the most important factors in predicting the prognosis of a woman with this disease.

As with all cancer screenings, recommendations for breast cancer screening rely on a combination of factors involving evidence about the risk of the condition, the benefits and harms of screening, and the cost.

The gold standard for screening breast imaging remains the mammogram, she says.

One of the greatest advantages of a mammogram is that it can find breast changes years before physical symptoms develop.

It is also important to dispel the myths that the negligible doses of radiation used in modern mammography can possibly produce breast cancer or represent any danger to the body, including the thyroid gland.

The RSSA and the BISSA continue to recommend that women get yearly mammograms starting at age 40. Early breast cancer detection through mammography also enables less extensive surgery, fewer mastectomies, and less frequent or aggressive chemotherapy.

Who is most at risk of developing breast cancer?

The risk factors include: Age – The risk of developing breast cancer increases as one gets older; however, one out of eight invasive breast cancers are found in women younger than 45.

Family history – Breast cancer risk is higher among women whose close blood relatives have had this disease. Having one first-degree relative (parent, sibling, child or maternal grandmother) with breast cancer approximately doubles a woman’s risk. Hav-

ing two increases her risk about threefold.

Personal history – A woman with cancer in one breast has a three to four times higher risk of developing a new cancer in the other breast or in another part of the same breast.

This is different from a recurrence (return) of the first cancer.

Dense breast tissue – Women with dense breast tissue (as identified on a mammogram) have more glandular tissue and less fatty tissue, and have a higher risk of breast cancer. Unfortunately, dense breast tissue can also make it harder for doctors to spot problems on mammograms.

Being overweight or obese – Research has shown that being overweight or obese increases the risk of breast and other cancers. Now, a larger study suggests that overweight and obese women diagnosed with early-stage, hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer have a higher risk of the cancer returning (recurrence) and are less likely to survive the disease. Healthy eating and weight management is very important.

Lifestyle factors – excessive alcohol use, little to no physical activity, smoking and a diet high in saturated fats increase the risk of breast cancer.

Radiation to the chest before 30 years of age – radiation to the chest to treat another cancer (not breast cancer), such as Hodgkin’s disease or non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, results in a higher-than-average risk of breast cancer.

Race/ethnicity – White women are slightly more likely to develop breast cancer than African American, Hispanic and Asian women.

Hormonal environment – Women who haven’t had a full-term pregnancy or have their first child after age 30 have a higher risk of breast cancer compared to women who give birth before the age of 30. Breastfeeding can lower the risk of breast cancer, especially if a woman breastfeeds for longer than one year. Women who started menstruating (having periods) younger than age 12 have a higher risk of breast cancer later in life. The same is true for women who go through menopause when they’re older than 55.

Joubert concludes: “Clinical breast examinations, pap smears and healthy lifestyle risk assessments are all offered at Cansa Care Centres countrywide to increase early detection. We also support patients and their families through counselling and support groups.”

Cansa also has various mobile health clinics that offer screening to people in communities without easy access to health screening.

During October, the public can participate in Cansa’s “Shades of Pink” campaign to raise awareness about cancers affecting women and to generate funds to help Cansa in its screening and support efforts for women.

Sy het dit ’n paar weke gelede verloor ná ’n besoek aan die Evertsdal-Opstal.

Die personeel het die opstal gefynkam toe hulle hoor dat haar ringe vermis word, maar kon dit nêrens opspoor nie.

Niemand het egter rekening gehou met die fyn oog van die tuinwerker, Gilson Banda, nie. Meer as ’n week later het Banda twee ringe in die parkeerterrein opgetel.

Twee en twee is bymekaar gesit en die personeel het dadelik besef die ringe moet aan Booysen behoort.

Die enigste probleem is dat niemand Booysen se kontakbesonderhede gehad het nie.

Get creative with containers A fun competition in which gardeners can compete with their creative gardening containers is being presented by the Durbanville Garden Club.

With the theme “Think out of the box”, competitors can upcycle any old container into a prize-winning container. Think small – it must fit into a space no larger than 400 x 400 x 400mm.

The club is encouraging young and old in the northern suburbs who are interested in gardening to enter this fun competition.

“In these difficult drought times, we hope to keep gardening alive and encourage everyone to use their creative imagination to garden with a fun container, which can be

The categories are: Succulents; Fairy Garden; Herbs and Vegetables; and Anything Goes! There is also a special category for under 12s to encourage the gardeners of the future.

Entry is free and there are prizes of garden goodies worth R6000 up for grabs.

The closing date for entries is 8 November.

Display and judging will take place on 18 November in the Durbanville Library hall.

Springbok Award for two top Scouts B

eing active Scouts since the age of 11 culminated in Stuart Vidal-Hall and Robert van Wyk from 1st Monte Vista Scout Group being awarded their Springbok awards.

The Springbok Award is the highest award in South African Scouting for members under the age of 18 years.

They received the award from the chief Scout of South Africa, Subisiso Vilane, at the annual dinner.

Stuart and Robert came through the Cub ranks at 1st Monte Vista Group. Both are currently completing their Grade 12 year before embarking on the next stage of their lives.

The Springbok Award focuses mainly on leadership and community service.

It includes, among other things, 40 hours of community service, leading a hike over 30km in unfamiliar terrain, organising and

leading a camp, cooking a three-course meal for a group of people, and planning and constructing a large pioneering project, all with minimal adult assistance.

The achievement of the Springbok Award therefore requires vast amounts of dedication, discipline, coordination and determination.

When asked about his thoughts and experiences on scouting, Stuart says: “From the age of 11 we have been involved in the life of our home troop, 1st Monte Vista, by regularly attending the ‘ridiculously cool’ meetings on Friday nights.

These meetings are carefully planned by the adult corps for the troop and targeted at developing valuable life skills in the Scouts.

“As we acquired skills and experience in leadership, we could become more involved in the development and advancement of our younger Scouts in the troop.

“We have gained skills that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives and it is so rewarding to help and empower younger Scouts to realise their potential.

“All of this is incorporated into a world of fantastic adventure amid the beauty of nature that surrounds us.”

Listen to the ‘saxyvibes’ of local musician Local saxophonist Don Vino Prins will be bringing authentic entertainment to the stage of the Roxy Revue Bar at GrandWest from Monday 23 to Saturday 28 October.

The well-known musician will be presenting Don Vino’s #saxyvibes, through which he tells of his personal journey as a saxophonist.

Prins’s passion for the saxophone was ignited at the tender age of 15.

He has since performed with renowned Don Vino Prins local and international artists and has entrenched himself in the South African performing arts industry as

a collaborator, philanthropist, businessman and solo artist.

In recent months, he has performed several sold-out shows and released his single, “Worried”.

As Prins does not restrict himself to a specific genre, his repertoire includes a diversity ranging from jazz and gospel to R&B and Afrikaans music.

The production’s brass section also profiles students he has taught, and features the powerful vocals of Elwira Standili.

V Don Vino’s #saxyvibes, a two-hour show, will be staged from 23 to 28 October at 19:00. Tickets cost R150 at Computicket.

ie Hoër Tegniese Skool Bellville in Labiance se o.19-rugbyspan, bekend as die Drake, is druk besig om span te bou ter voorbereiding van die 2018-seisoen.

Die Drake het die Helderstroom-gevangenis naby Caledon gedurende die eerste naweek van die Septembervakansie besoek as deel van hul voorseisoense voorbereiding.

Tydens die spanbousessie het die spelers en afrigters nuwe doelwitte vir die komende seisoen uiteengesit.

Volgense Liezl du Plessis, woordvoerder van HTS Bellville, was die spanbou inspirerend vir almal betrokke en is ’n goeie grond-

slag gelê vir die maande wat voorlê.

“Ons skool volg ook die sewe gewoontes van hoogs effektiewe mense en gewoonte een is om pro-aktief te wees. Daarom het die spelers die naweek weggebreek om hul rugbyplanne vir volgende jaar nou al in plek te kry,” het sy gesê. Die spelers het nie ’n spesifieke oefenprogram gevolg nie, maar dit was ’n kombinasie van verskeie aktiwiteite.

Club plays in cricket festival: The Bellville Cricket Club’s u.11 team took part in the

2017 Knysna Cricket Festival during the October school holidays. Seventy schools from across SA participated in the festival. On day one, the Bellville team played against St Andrew’s Prep A. On day two their rivals were SWCC Wizards and on day three they came up against Plettenberg Bay Primary. The youngsters were fortunate to have Allison Johnson as their coach. ygerberg-klub het weliswaar die afgelope Saterdag naelskraap in die stof gebyt in die kwarteindronde van die landwye Goue Beker-rugbykompetisie.

Maar die Floridaparkspan se ondersteuners het net lof vir hul span.

Tygerberg, wat op spesiale uitnodiging by dié kompetisie vir die voorste nie-universi-

têre klubspanne in die land betrek is, was met sy oorwinning van 29-7 voorverlede naweek oor Oos-Londen se Old Selbornians drie keer in vier ligawedstryde aan die wenkant. Dit het hom die afgelope naweek ’n tuis-kwarteindstryd teen College Rovers (Durban) besorg. Dit was so hittete of die Tiere het hulle in die halfeindronde bevind.

Maar dit was die twee sagte drieë wat die ietwat oorgeruste tuisspan teen die Durba-

niete afgestaan het, wat uiteindelik deurslaggewend was in die besoekers se oorwinning met 27-23.

“Daarby het ons manne as gevolg van verspeelde kanse onnodige kwaai druk op hulself geplaas,” sê Kevin Kiewitz, die Tygerbergers se voorsitter.

“Ons kon die wedstryd gewen het as dit nie ’n geval was dat ons deurentyd inhaalrugby moes speel nie. Tog voel ons gelukkig oor die

waardevolle ondervinding wat die Tiere die afgelope paar weke in hierdie kompetisie opgedoen het,” verklaar Kiewitz.

Die WP sal darem wel in die halfeindronde verteenwoordig wees. Valsbaai het voorverlede naweek sy onoorwonne status behou deur College Rovers met 19-16 te klop.

Saterdag in die kwarteindronde was die Kapenaars met 37-13 gans te sterk vir Progress (George).

last home match against Clyde Pinelands a fortnight ago, winning by a massive 9-0 margin. At the age of 16, Maurice Theart was called up to the senior first team for his debut match. Theart made a major contribution by scoring a goal.
