The illegal dumping of waste in Table View as a result of homeless people and vagrants is something that will not stop unless residents play their part.

This is the message of the Table View Community Policing Forum’s treasurer, Ken Spies.

In a statement issued in August this year

regarding illegal dumping, the City of Cape Town encouraged members of the public to refrain from using the so-called “trolley brigade” to dispose of unwanted rubble or waste – something the local CPF supports, says Spies.

As a result of this practice, the community of the greater Table View area has formed a community group called Community Clean Ups, which meets every second Saturday at 08:30 at the Parklands Police Station.

The group spends about three hours cleaning up persistent litter hotspots caused by illegal overnight campsites in parks, public open spaces and the greenbelts.

On Saturday 21 October they once again took to the parks where a trailer load of rubbish generated by street people, and which filled up a solid waste truck, was collected.

‘This horrible lifestyle is only made possible because they are sustained by the communities in which they operate,” Spies says.

He explains that often homeless people are used by organised criminal gangs as drug runners who are usually paid in drugs, ensuring that the real criminals are never caught in possession of drugs.

City says ‘pay your debt, help with drought’

P

ayment on more than 110 350 overdue municipal accounts – translating to about R594 million – would go a long way towards helping the City with the current drought crisis.

In a statement released last week, the City said it had already sent 105 179 SMS notices for the 110 350 overdue accounts amounting to R594 million as at 18 October.

Total payments received though the SMS initiative have brought in an amount of R194 million, according to the statement.

The City called on all debtors, other than those receiving indigent assistance, to pay up or to face debt management actions.

These actions have been intensified, especially against those who can pay but choose not to, and also against frequent defaulters,

according to the statement.

The City maintains that for the period ended 30 September, their collection rate was 95.24% due to an effort to drive sustainability and the culture of payment, working hard to maintain a 12-month moving average payment ratio for rates and services over the last year.

According to the statement, the City’s collection rate has also been an area of focus that has yielded results, and the City’s current billings are over R2.6 billion per month. “Debt management actions are being intensified, especially against those who are able to pay but choose not to do so, and also against the frequent defaulters.

Community members who dump unwanted items next to their bins, and shopping centres that do not control the removal of trolleys from their premises, are also among these factors.

“All of these causes need to be addressed by all community-based organisations and the community as a whole, as our Community Clean Ups are only addressing the symptoms and are ultimately not sustainable without ongoing community support.

“The greater community must understand that if we don’t change our ways and support the City of Cape Town’s efforts to rehabilitate unfortunate street dwellers, ultimately the community will pay the price of a snowballing degradation problem – a problem that will hit them directly in the pocket as property resale values fall or rates increase as the City has to bear the costs currently borne by community clean-up interventions,” Spies says.

F

or some people, life on the streets is a sad and inescapable reality. Some choose to be on the streets; for others, this is the only option.

To ease the pain of hunger and cold nights, and to prevent abuse from criminals, one non-profit organisation (NPO) has set out to help those who are destitute – some of whom are young teenagers, often children.

TLC, an NPO based in Table View, says it visits street people on a weekly basis, encouraging homeless men and women to better themselves by joining one of their programmes, which are open to everyone, free of charge. These programmes teach skills varying from reading and writing, to working on a computer.

“We allow them to draw up their CVs and also conduct mock job interviews. We also teach some of the guys to drive so they can get their driver’s licence,” says Bruce Postings, who has been a volunteer with TLC for more than 12 years.

He says the primary aim of the programme is to eventually reunify people with their families and friends and see them reintegrated into society. “Some of these people have been on the streets for 15 to 17 years,” says Postings, who leads a team of volunteers every Thursday night on the streets of Table View as part of the TLC Street Ministry whereby they visit homeless people.

“One of the guys we spoke to once told me he did time at Pollsmoor Prison. He was released and lived on the streets. We encouraged him to get off the streets and supported him, and now he is married, works as a manager and earns a salary.

He says their ultimate dream is to someday own a piece of land upon which they can build a refuge, similar to a rehabilitation centre where they can formalise their training and help homeless people take responsibility.

TLC was started by Colleen Pietersen and is based in Pentz Drive, Table View.

Today the NPO does work in the Radar Bush informal settlement near Bloubergstrand, Morningstar and Wolwerivier. . Last year TygerBurger reported on the

City of Cape Town’s plans to open a homeless centre in Atlantis.

Earlier that year the City had also planned to lease the Global School of Theology near Potsdam for the purposes of a new centre. This deal fell through, however, when the institution called off all negotiations with the City, it was reported (“New plan for homeless centre”, 27/07/16).

“The City’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department wanted to enter into a lease agreement with the college, but was unsuccessful,” Mayco member for Area North, Suzette Little, confirmed last week.

World Homeless Day was marked recently, with some government departments hosting various events to highlight the day.

The renewed call from the City of Cape Town to residents on the day was once again to refrain from giving hand-outs directly to street people.

This call was echoed by the Western Cape Department of Social Development, which encouraged people to give responsibly.

“We are constantly reminding residents about the harm in giving money directly to street people. While they may think they are doing a good deed, in reality it only discourages street people from accepting social services.

“Giving money perpetuates chronic homelessness, as well as various other social issues. The City has a number of programmes to help street people, but we can

reach far more people in a more meaningful way if the public supports the interventions that will assist with reintegrating and helping street people, rather than giving handouts,” says JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security and social services.

The City’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department hosted its celebration event in partnership with Oasis ‘Reach for Your Dream’, a non-governmental organisation. About 100 street people attended.

During the 2016/17 financial year, the City’s Street People Unit responded to nearly 15 000 complaints about street people, and successfully offered assistance to more than 2600 individuals. The Reintegration Unit reunited 82 people with their families during this same period.

Sihle Ngobese, spokesperson for the provincial minister for social development, Albert Fritz, says that homelessness is a major concern, as it is often the more vulnerable

segments of society, including women, children and the elderly, living in dangerous conditions on the streets.

“To tackle homelessness, the department has allocated R15.7 million to 64 NGOs that render services to people living on the streets. This funding also reaches a growing network of 23 shelters for homeless people,” Ngobese says.

He says that according to the latest street people survey, there are an estimated 4862 people living and sleeping on the streets of Cape Town.

The provincial department partnered with a non-governmental organisation, AlImdaad, to donate 100 hygiene and sanitary packs to Elim Night Shelter in Elsies River.

World Homeless Day is now in its seventh year and was celebrated on Tuesday 10 October.

Milnerton Playhouse still going strong at 28 RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

F

or many motorists, the iconic white building on Marine Drive, Milnerton, has been a familiar sight for years now

– a landmark almost.

But despite the words ‘Milnerton Playhouse Theatre’ in large lettering on the side, very few people actually know what happens in the single-storey building.

The playhouse theatre, which was built 28

years ago in 1989, is in actual fact the home of many amateur artists, says Milnerton Players member, Sheila McCormick.

The Milnerton Players, a non-profit organisation (NPO) that formed in 1979, needed a home, explains McCormick, which is where the story of the theatre begins.

The then Milnerton Council was kind enough to construct the building, and what was at first just a shell is now a place of magic, she says.

“At the beginning there was no lighting, no stage and no curtains. We did all of that ourselves.

“Later on an extension was built, and after the change in the smoking laws, our smoking room became what is now the storeroom.

“We also hire the building out for functions such as birthday parties and weddings, and we even had a Christening here,” she says laughing.

Today the Milnerton Players are 100 volunteers strong, and they are still fortunate enough to call the Milnerton Playhouse Theatre their home.

The 1970s play, A Bequest to the Nation

by Terence Rattigan, was the official opening production for the building, she remembers.

“I remember I had a small part in that play.”

McCormack went on to direct the very first musical to be staged at the playhouse theatre, Godspell – a musical by the artist

John-Micheal Tebelak.

For McCormack, and for the rest of the volunteers, the theatre and arts are something that can never be ignored.

“The theatre plays a very important role in society.

“It has a special thing that you cannot get when you watch it on screen. It is much more personal and I think you connect with the audience.”

The future of the theatre and arts, she feels, is also still very much alive.

“We presented a theatre course earlier this year and now have a few people training at the moment.”

McCormack says the support from the public is just as good.

“The support varies depending on what you put on.

“Comedy sells well, as do musicals. But you can never tell what the audience will do.

Thankfully the theatre has never been empty.” There is also a lot of support from the younger generations, she adds.

“We are actually get quite a lot of young people in, there is keen interest with young people in amateur theatre.”

McCormack, who has been involved with the Milnerton Players since 1984, is currently preparing her next play, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. The play is on from 24 November to 9 December.

Alleged fraudster behind bars

Pair had cards, rifle, drugs Two Table View men who were caught with suspected counterfeit bank cards, a rifle and cocaine were arrested by the Hawks last week.

Hawks spokesperson, Captain Lloyd Ramovha, says the two were arrested by the police on Thursday following what was at first a domestic violence complaint.

Ramovha says the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Unit is investigating charges relating to the contravention of the Electronic Communication and Transactions Act. The men are also being charged with possession of a prohibited firearm and narcotics.

“The police attended to the said complaint, which was said to be negative. On their way back to the station, they received a tip-off alerting them that the same address had always been a hive of suspicious activities.

“They returned and carried out a search-and-seizure operation, and almost 700 suspected cloned bank cards, seven point-of-sale devices, a .22 rifle with ammunition, several passports, identity documents and drivers’ licences, as well as electronic equipment including computers, and four grams of cocaine were seized,” Ramovha says.

Ramovha says there are apparent signs that the syndicate could be operating nationally.

The two suspects, aged 30 and 31 years respectively, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Ramovha says charges of forgery, fraud and uttering (putting forged money into circulation) are to be added.

Help root out cable theft Members of the public have been asked to assist the City of Cape Town in identifying the culprits responsible for electricity and cable theft.

This phenomenon occurs in many areas across the City, one of which is Joe Slovo Park in Milneron.

Recently the City’s Electricity Services Department said it continues to face an uphill battle with the vast amount of electricity tampering and cable theft that occurs in City-supplied areas across the metro, something which costs Cape Town dearly.

“The City calls on all residents to help stop this scourge,” says Xanthea Limberg, Mayco member for informal settlements, water and waste services and energy.

She says that over the past financial year to date, the City has dealt with nearly 6000 cases of electricity tampering and 3000 cases of cable theft. Accounts were adjusted to the value of R164 million, after it was found that customers had tampered with infrastructure to obtain electricity without paying for

it, Limberg says.

In the City’s supply areas in Cape Town, there are very clear hotspots where theft occurs. “Currently the areas with the biggest concentration of this illegal activity are Joe Slovo Park in Milnerton, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Philippi West and Weltevreden Valley.

Limberg says it should be noted, however, that tampering with electricity meters occurs all across the City. “Illegal connections mainly occur either where there has not been an application for additional connections on a property, or where informal settlements are on land where the provision of electricity is not possible due to circumstances such as land ownership challenges, wetlands, and densities, among others.

“We are appealing to members of the public to assist us by reporting any suspicious activities near electricity infrastructure or providing any leads on electricity tampering.”

The man, David Powell, has appeared in court and can be named, although he has not formally been charged. He was arrested on Wednesday 18 October at his alleged hideout in Milnerton, says Chad Thomas, IRS group operations director.

T

he City of Cape Town recently announced the 12 designated sites for people to discharge fireworks in celebration of Guy Fawkes Day, Diwali and New Year’s Eve – one of those sites being the Table View beachfront, a decision with which many people are unhappy.

Earlier this year the Table View Ratepayers’ Association (TVRA) initiated a poll asking people whether they agreed or disagreed with fireworks being discharged on the beachfront.

The poll, which was launched in August, only managed to gather 980 signatures – described by some as a drop in the ocean.

Mandy da Matta, TVRA deputy chairperson, says a total of 45 people agreed to having the fireworks proceed, while 935 disagreed.

Da Matta says the poll is still ongoing.

“The reality, though, is that in a community of approximately 120 000 people, our poll was unsuccessful at achieving a definitive result to take to council, to cause a change in council perception. It is noted that all 12 dedicated sites only entertain about 20 000 people out of a City population of 4 million, Da Matta says. A total of about 60 000 signatures is needed to have an effect.

The 12 designated sites are located in Athlone, Atlantis, Bishop Lavis, Bonteheuwel, Blue Downs, Camps Bay, Delft, Macassar, Mitchell’s Plain, Sarepta and Strandfontein.

The list was approved in consultation with

the various subcouncils and in accordance with the City’s bylaws.

“The TVRA has requested, on record in the ward 23 and ward 107 minutes, that the fireworks event be hosted at the Green Point Stadium and that an entry fee be charged to host the event. All the transport to the stadium should be free for the event. In this way, the stadium would be utilised and the number of Law Enforcement officers required would be more cost effective.

“Stadiums are designed to be more soundproof, which will alleviate the harmful effects on animals and the environment. We understand the City’s decision to designate sites from a supervision point of view; however, we would like to see a public participation procedure followed in future in order

to consult the community at large,” Da Matta says.

She adds: “We appeal to celebrators to be considerate of the surrounding community and our animals by avoiding big bangs, such as air bombs, supersonic bangs, sound shells and screeches, and to purchase from traders that hold official permits to sell fireworks.”

Da Matta says the TVRA will continue to gauge community opinion on fireworks in the future. “However, as it stands, these celebrations are a done deal for this year,” Da Matta says. . Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated on Sunday 5 November.

Domestic worker honoured: Appliance and electronic retail giant, Hircsh’s, this week hon­ oured Pumla Geledu as the Domestic Worker of the Month. The store hosted an appliance training course for domestic workers who learnt the ins and outs of vacuum cleaners, dishwash­ ers, washing machines, lounge suites and stoves. Each participant was awarded a certificate for attending the course. Geledu deservedly won the title “Domestic Worker of the Month”, says Taryn Taylor, Hircsh’s spokesperson. “Pumla is a caring and hardworking person and a very important part of our home,” says her employer.

New stops, routes, timetables for MyCiTi C

ommuters on the West Coast and in other parts of the City will be happy to hear that new routes have now been added to the existing MyCiTi bus service.

The City of Cape Town announced last week that it has also launched five new MyCiTi bus stops, improved its timetables and added new direct and express routes to the service in an effort to make it more efficient. The changes are set to meet the increase in passenger demand and help cut travel time, the City says, adding that commuters will also have an opportunity to en-

joy a free-ride day on Sunday 29 October.

The City says Berkshire Boulevard in Table View also has a new stop on the T03 route, which makes it convenient for Atlantis residents to access the new Table Bay Mall. Brittlestar Drive near Melkbosstrand will now serve both directions of travel and there are four new stops along the R27 – Koeberg Power Station, Duynefontein, Melkbosch and Birkenhead – serving the T02 and T03 routes, says Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport and urban development.

Other significant changes to the service

in Melkbosstrand and Duynefontein include route 217 – operating from Table View to Big Bay via Melkbosstrand – which will be terminated at Melkbosstrand station and no longer travel to Melkbosch Village.

Route 230 – the route from Duynefontein to Melkbosstrand – will connect with Route 217 at Melkbosstrand station and continue via the Melkbosch Village stop, formerly called Melkbosch to Duynefontein, Herron says.

The Route 230 service will no longer serve the Atlantic Beach and Brittlestar

stops.

The Waratah Avenue stop will be discontinued and a new stop, Birkenhead on the R27, will be added.

In Parklands, MyCiTi will also launch a service that will link residents in the area with the City centre on the T01 route, without the need to transfer at the Table View station. Herron says Parklands and Sandown roads are also getting four new MyCiTi stops.

No dogs in reserve from 1 January CARINA ROUX

esidents near the Bothasig Fynbos Reserve are apparently not too happy about the prospect of having their pooches banned from the reserve’s sandy pathways come next year.

Clive Owen, chairperson of the Bothasig Residents’ Association (BRA), says several dog owners who regularly exercise their dogs in the reserve approached the BRA after City officials, in conjunction with the ward councillor, Helen Carstens, decided the reserve will be closed to dog walkers from 1 January. Owen says the main reasons given for the proposed closure are the new enclosed dog park to be built adjacent to Bosmansdam High School; dog owners failing to pick up their dogs’ excrement, thus causing a health hazard when mowing the public paths; dogs being off leash, which has at times resulted in dog fights and injuries to moles, and that the original intention when establishing the reserve was to temporarily allow dogs on leashes until such time as certain mammals were introduced to the reserve.

Carstens says she’s been toying with the idea of a dedicated dog park for some time.

“I have been on many site visits with officials to look at what is available and best suited for a dog park. A number of criteria had to be taken into account, with the most important being accessibility, she says.

Carstens says she wanted an area with plenty of space for dogs to run and roam freely. There are a number of open spaces in Edgemead and Bothasig, but with the larger ones being in Bothasig the decision fell on the open land on Adam Tas Avenue adjacent to Bosmansdam High School.

Carstens says there are many plans for the dog park and, as it will be done with ward allocation, it will be completed over a number of financial years. Currently the tender

is out for the fencing and once the fence is up, the park will be usable. She’s been told the fence should be in place by December, but there are many variables that could delay this.

The plans for the park include the sidewalk curb to be dropped and moved back 8m to allow for parking. The next stage is pathways and lighting, after which an area for small dogs will be cordoned off within the bigger park. Carstens is looking at placing play equipment in this area later on. There will be some benches and poo bins as well as water troughs, but dog owners will need to bring their own water.

Carstens says that as far as the Bothasig Fynbos Reserve is concerned, this is a “newly” established reserve and from the onset, it was the intention to build the reserve to the point where wild animals could be introduced and then dog walking would not be allowed. Over the past few years, during the establishment phase of the reserve, dog walking was allowed on condition the dog is on a leash and their excrement is picked up.

“Unfortunately, owners let their dogs run freely and did not pick up after their dogs.

This created untold problems, especially when the tractors went in to cut and the drivers were sprayed with the most unpleasant doggie mess.” Cartsens says this worsening practice was a moving point in her taking action with the dog park.

Owen says that while the BRA is supportive of preserving the remnant of fynbos that exists in any nature conservation area, his observation over many years is that it is mainly dog walkers who walk in the reserve.

Preventing dog walkers from walking in the reserve will create a “white elephant”, he says.

Owen says that as chairperson of the BRA, he’s been tasked by residents to draw up a petition not to exclude dog walkers from using the reserve with effect from 1 January.

Shavathon in memory of my hero gran

My grandmother lost her battle with cancer 17 years ago ... but boy, did she put up a fight!

Gran would have turned 93 on Sunday 29 October – the very day that I and other members of the team from People’s Post (TygerBurger’s sister publication) will be taking part in our very first Shades of Pink shavathon and sprayathon as part of our #WeKTyger October campaign.

Having been diagnosed with ovarian cancer in its early stages and undergoing a hysterectomy, Gran spent seven years in remission before the cancer returned.

After a few years, and many rounds of radiation treatment and a wig or two later, her time with us came to an end – but not without leaving me with lifelong memories of what a “tough cookie” really looks like.

As a child, I don’t ever remember my gran as being sick.

She always carried herself with a strength and As a child, I grace that made it seem like nothing don’t ever could break her. many friends remember my The at her funeral that she gran as being insisted was never too sick to serve tea at sick ... church, and even in her last days she still had strong opinions on what the Proteas were doing wrong (and wouldn’t have minded telling them!).

Widowed in her 30s, Gran raised two daughters as a single parent working a full-time job – something almost unheard of in the 1950s and 60s. Hers is a strength that I’d like to believe is a family trait, along with an unusual sense of humour.

It’s probably this humour that I remember most during her illness – she even insisted she much preferred wearing a wig, after losing all her natural hair to her treatment, because she could simply toss it in the washing machine instead of wasting hours washing, rolling and setting her hair. As a tribute to my grandmother, and all those who have lost their fight, I’ll be lopping off my locks to donate them to Cansa to be made into a wig for someone fighting their own battle with cancer. It’s my hope that with even just a quarter of Gran’s strength, my small gift will give someone the strength to beat their illness. – Nicole McCain, senior journalist, People’s Post.

Heimwee na ou dae se langarmdanse Na aanleiding van Willem Swart se brief (“Waar is al die orkeste tog?” 18/10): Wat hy daar geskryf het, het my hart sommer vinnig laat klop vanweë die pragtige herinneringe wat ek as ’n bejaarde dame van 89 jaar as ’n jong meisie beleef het.

Ek het grootgeword in Oos-Londen. My hele familie was baie lief vir boeremusiek en langarmdans. Jong mense van vandag weet glad nie hoe om hulself te geniet soos ons in daardie dae nie. Nou weet hulle net van TV-kyk en om met ’n selfoon te speel.

Vroeër het ons soms boeremusiek-programme op die TV en radio gekry, maar dit gebeur nie meer nie. Hoop die boeremusiek-orkeste kry weer lewe! Ek en my suster het in ons tienerjare in ’n boeremusiek-orkes gespeel – sy die ukelele en ek die banjo en trekklavier. Die leier het die konsertina en trekklavier gespeel, ’n seun was op die dromme, ’n meisie op die klavier en ’n vriend op kitaar.

Ons het Vrydag- en Saterdagaande musiek gemaak en langarm gedans dat die stof so staan. Boetie Kallis en sy orkes was ons gunsteling en ons gunstelingliedjies was “Sarie Marais”, “Suikerbossie” en die “Kalfiewals”.

En soos Willem sê, was die “Pall Jones” die hoogtepunt!

Dit was wonderlike, gelukkige dae. Wens ons kan dit

weer beleef.

Ek het vandag self modder weggegrawe om te sien of ek iets daaraan kan doen, maar die lek is aan die munisipaliteit se kant van my watermeter. Ek mag dus nie daaraan werk nie. Die beste wat ek kan doen, is om iets om die pyp te draai en vas te klamp terwyl ons wag vir die Stad Kaapstad – dít terwyl skoon drinkwater in die grond weg sypel. Ek kan nie wag vir die Stad Kaapstad om aangedrentel te kom, spreekwoordelike middelvinger in die lug, terwyl so baie mense probeer water spaar nie.

Ek het ook ’n middelvinger, en sal dit gebruik deur vir die Kaapse Party te stem in die volgende verkiesing.

ltesame tien bome is reeds aangeplant in die Go Green Knysna-projek, wat ’n vrou van Durbanville in Junie vanjaar begin het om die plantegroei in Knysna ná die vernietigende brande te help hervestig.

Chanel Wallace het vroeër vanjaar op haar persoonlike WhatsApp-groepe genoem sy wil plante en bome vir dié doel insamel, en voor sy haar oë kon uitvee, het haar idee só gegroei dat sy ’n hele span vrywilligers moes kry om haar te help.

Talle organisasies, onder meer ook AfriForum, het meegedoen en op Saterdag 23 September is tien inheemse bome in die Pledge-natuurreservaat geplant – onder meer Cape ash, waterbessie- en die Outeniqua-geelhoutbome.

Daar word beplan om voor einde vanjaar, asook volgende jaar op 7 Junie, ter herdenking aan die brande, nóg bome aan te plant, het Wallace gesê.

AfriForum het ook ’n 2 500 l-watertenk aan die reservaat geskenk, omdat baie van die reservaat se infrastruktuur vernietig is.

Volgens ’n mediaverklaring is die Pledgenatuurreservaat weens verskeie redes ’n goeie beginpunt om Knysna se ekosisteem weer op die been te kry.

Die Go Green Knysna-span is ook besig om in samewerking met Riaan Bosch, ’n byeboer in Knysna, te onderhandel om bye te teel en terug te plaas in die Knysna-omgewing,” het Wallace gesê.

Go Green Knysna het onlangs ook ’n fondsinsamelingskompetisie vir skole gehad. ’n Kompetisie is gehou waarin skole geld ten bate van Go Green Knysna ingesamel het. Die drie wenskole wat die meeste geld ingesamel het, was die Primêre Skool Outeniqua in George, Pre-primêre Skool Meerendal in Kaapstad en die Eduplay Early Learning Centre in Durbanville. ’n Boom, wat aangeplant is, is na elk van die drie skole vernoem en ’n koperplaatjie met die skool se naam is by die boom aangebring.

Emo Adams en Aletté en Heinz Winkler het ’n kort video gemaak waarin hulle die kinders en onderskeie skole gelukgewens het.

Go Green Knysna het die rolspelers bedank wat gehelp het om die projek moontlik te maak, waaronder Flora RSA-kwekery, Everybody Love Everybody, Norgarivierkwekery, Gardenworld in Krugersdorp en Cape Garden Centre in Kaapstad.

hile wandering far and wide in the Cape Winelands, travellers and wine lovers may well have overlooked a gem right in their midst: Groot Phesantekraal Farm, peacefully hidden on the outskirts of Durbanville.

Amid much fanfare, the farm last week launched their maiden Blanc de Blanc 2015, Cap Classique and Pinotage 2016, as well as vintages of their rebranded range of Groot Phesantekraal wines.

The launch took place in their beautifully restored restaurant, which is housed in a building constructed 250 years ago in 1767.

In fact, the family will soon be celebrating the 320th anniversary of their historic farm, which dates back to 1698.

Once a reposing farm with rolling wheat fields, vineyards and grazing cows and sheep, this historic estate has seen a quiet evolution, elevating it to the top of any wine explorer’s to-do list this summer.

Fourth-generation owners, André and Ronelle Brink, are in celebration mode at Groot Phesantekraal – celebrating 120 years of Brink family ownership, along with the launch of the new wines. Their 2017 Sauvignon Blanc recently won a Veritas Double Gold and a prestigious place among the 2017 FNB Top 10 Sauvignon Blancs.

One of Durbanville’s oldest farms, the heritage that is Groot Phesantekraal dates back to 1698 when Cape governor, Simon van der Stel, granted the land to its first owner, Captain Olof Bergh of the VOC (whose name lives on as one of the Cape’s rare aged brandies produced by the solera method). A story of improbable love, triumph and perseverance is woven into the farm’s history. Olof Bergh’s heart was captured by the beautiful Anna de Koning, daughter of a freed slave in the Jan van Riebeeck household. Anna and Bergh married in 1676 and together they farmed the land now known as Groot Phesantekraal. After her husband’s death, she became a wealthy widow, inheriting the farm.

Thanks to her intelligence and beauty, she became a distinguished member of the Cape of Good Hope elite.

Records show that by 1756 some 40 000 vines had been planted on Groot Phesantekraal. In 1759 the property was sold to the Louw family and later purchased by Arend Brink in 1897.

Primarily devoted to mixed farming (grains, cattle and sheep), fourth-generation current custodians, André (Oubaas) and Ronelle Brink, planted vineyards covering 50ha of its 840ha expanse in 1996.

These replaced mostly old bush vines.

Since launching their own label in 2005, André and Ronelle Brink continue to sell the majority of their grapes, primarily Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, to big-name cellars, retaining only some 50 tons for their own wines. With four generations of grape farming woven into the Brink family’s story, André and Ronelle fulfilled a lifelong dream in 2005 when they launched their own family wine brand, Phizante Kraal Wine, in very small quantities, consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and two Chenin Blancs.

The wines were made for the Brinks by family friend, Thys Louw (Diemersdal Estate). Blessed with great terroir and skilled winemaking, the wines were very well received, earning Durbanville Terroir awards, Michelangelo medals, as well as Top 20 and Top 10 Sauvignon Blanc awards.

The past couple of years have seen some changes. Etienne Louw of Altydgedacht has taken over as winemaker and all the wines have been rebranded. Phizante Kraal, one of the names of the farm during its long history, has been changed to the current name of the farm, Groot Phesantekraal, and the new wine labels include the Brink family crest.

‘Minimum sentences simply don’t work’ HARRIET BOX

here is no evidence that mandatory minimum sentences work, and growing evidence that they are not effec-

tive.

So said Justice Edwin Cameron of the South African Constitutional Court when he delivered the third annual Dean’s Distinguished Lecture at the University of the Western Cape’s Faculty of Law on Thursday 19 October 2017.

Cameron went on to say that despite this evidence, South Africa stubbornly persists with mandatory minimum sentences – largely because the State wants to persuade a “terrified” public that it is tough on crime.

According to the dean of law at UWC, Professor Bernard Martin, these annual lectures provide a platform for South Africa’s leading legal minds to explore some of the most pressing issues of our time.

Cameron’s lecture, “Imprisoning the Nation: Minimum Sentences in South Africa”, made a strong case for the scrapping of such minimum sentences for most lowlevel non-violent crimes – a view not always popular with the South African population, he warned, though he stressed that long sentences for violent crimes are most necessary.

Minimum sentences have not only proven ineffective, but have also had pernicious effects on the correctional system, on offenders, and on society in general, he said.

“Minimum sentences offer us a false promise,” Cameron said.

“They offer us a belief that we are actually doing something about crime.”

The toll has been disastrous, Cameron noted.

For one, overcrowding in South African prisons has led to a range of human rights violations, perpetrated in the name of its citizens.

It also disproportionately affects black and coloured offenders.

And, he argued, mandatory minimum sentences fail to meet all four rationales used in the justification thereof: deterrence (offenders are deterred by the cer-

tainty of punishment rather than the severity of the sentence), incapacitation (locking up less dangerous criminals for long periods does not reduce crime), rehabilitation (this is simply not done, in Cameron’s experience of visiting South African prisons) and retribution (despite its strong emotional and historic appeal, vengeance has many shortcomings).

Harsh minimum sentencing, Cameron explained, was introduced into South African law in 1997 by the Criminal Law Amendment Act, a “tragic mistake” that has “plagued” the country for the past 20 years.

The law was put on the books largely to placate a terrified public as violent crime rose sharply over the country’s transition to democracy, according to him.

“Struggling to cement its legitimacy amid an outcry over crime, the State and politicians felt not only compelled to act, but more importantly to be seen to act,” said Cameron.

There are ways to reduce incarcerations in South Africa, but there are “no shortcuts” and “no magic bullets”, said Cameron.

Firstly, mandatory minimum sentences for low-level non-violent crime – mostly drug-related – should immediately be scrapped, he urged.

He proposed the establishment of a sentencing council, which had previously been mooted in an effort to come up with a more efficient system.

The mentally ill should be treated rather than imprisoned; finally, pretrial detention practices should be overhauled – and locking up those who cannot afford bail is simply unfair.

We are all terrified of crime, noted Cameron in closing – and often justifiably so.

But it must be recognised that minimum sentencing – “pernicious, misguided and futile” – has not reduced the levels of crime in our society.

“Instead, let us hold our leaders accountable,” he urged.

“They must guide us – and guide themselves – to the hard work and the systems building that will result in effective crime prevention.”

“Ou koeie” oor die historiese Pampoenkraal-uitspanplek in die Durbanville-sakekern wil maar net nie “in die sloot begrawe bly nie”.

Die Durbanville-erfenisvereniging (DEV) verkwalik Theresa Uys, raadslid vir wyk 112 wat die dorpskern insluit, dat hul vereniging, wat volgens hulle die aanvoorwerk vir die ontwikkeling van dié gebied gedoen het, in latere besluitneming misken en geïgnoreer is.

Die projek behels die opknapping van die gebied tussen Hoofweg en Pampoenkraallaan teen ’n koste van R10 miljoen.

In ’n skrywe deur Pierre van Vuuren, voorsitter van die DEV, aan TygerBurger word Uys daarvan beskuldig dat sy “die ooreenkoms met die DEV geïgnoreer het”.

“Sy beantwoord geen navrae of versoeke om inligting oor die finansies, asook oor die toekomsvisie vir die projek nie. Die DEV word minagtend in die duister gehou,” lui die brief.

“Sy het al beweer dit is haar projek, omdat sy R10 000 bewillig het. Inderwaarheid is die projek jare gelede deur die DEV geïnisieer. Toe die projek onlangs geopen is, was die lede van die DEV nie uitgenooi nie – ook nie die ou inwoners wat reeds lewenslank in die omgewing woonagtig is nie.

“Die DEV het vir jare aan die projek gewerk in noue en gesonde samewerking met destydse wyksraadslede soos Claude Ipser en Danetta Smit. Die projek is aan die Stad oorgedra weens die finansiële- en administratiewe voordele. Die DEV het verwag dat Uys hom in ’n samewerkende hoedanigheid sou inkorporeer,” lui die skrywe.

Die DEV is ook erg gekant teen die naamsverandering van Voortrekkerstraat na Pampoenkraallaan en sê dit was ’n eensydige besluit deur Uys. Volgens Hettie Smit, sekretaresse van die DEV, is die naamsverandering deur die DEV en meer as 12 winkeleienaars in die straat teengestaan. Smit het gesê sy beskik oor inligting dat raadslede by ’n vergadering gevra is om vorms te teken as deel van die openbare deelnameproses.

“’n Gerekende navorser, dr. Nico Walters van die DEV, het voorheen deeglike navorsing oor die perseel gedoen. Hy is nooit eens deur die Stad se navorsers geraadpleeg nie.

“Ons is verder ontstig omdat die voorgestelde argeologiese navorsing nie professioneel beplan en uitgevoer is nie. Met die terrein wat nou versteur is, kan baie inligting vir altyd verlore wees.”

Uys het in reaksie op die skrywe aan TygerBurger gesê sy het die skrywe met “valse aantygings” na die Stad se regsafdeling verwys om te ondersoek.

“Toe ek in 2010 as raadslid in wyk 21 [nou wyk 112] ná Danetta Smit aangestel is, het sy my ingelig oor die behoefte aan die opknap van die plein. Na ’n eerste afspraak met die DEV, het ek in die volgende finansiele jaar gemotiveer vir wyksbegrotingfondse vir ’n konseptuele ontwerpstudie.

“Dit is ’n studie wat intern deur die Stad se betrokke departemente gedoen is en kon nie deur die DEV gedoen word nie, aangesien daar ’n beleid is oor alle opknapwerk aan openbare oop ruimtes, het sy gesê.

Volgens Uys is daar drie openbare vergaderings gehou waarby lede van die DEV teenwoordig was. Sy het ook op twee ander geleenthede vanjaar met Van Vuuren oor sy besware vergader, het sy gesê. Sy het verskeie notules van vergadering met die DEV aan TygerBurger gestuur as bewys.

“Die projek is nog nie klaar nie. Die volgende stap is om die trappe voor te verander, asook die voltooiing van die voorgestelde koffiewinkel.

“Dan moet die korrekte naam vir die plein ook nog deur ’n proses van openbare deelname gaan voordat naamborde op die plein opgerig kan word,” het sy gesê.

“Die nuwe ontwikkeling is nog nie amptelik deur die burgemeester geopen nie, aangesien daar onvoorsiene vertragings met die projek was. Dit sal eers plaasvind aan die einde van die totale projek.

“As raadslid het ek nie die magtiging om enige straatname te verander nie. Dit word deur die Stad se namekomitee gedoen volgens ’n spesifieke beleid. Die komitee maak ’n aanbeveling aan die burgemeester en eers dan kan ’n straatnaam verander word,” het sy gesê.

Friendly furries at FAW need homes Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) has many loving animals of all ages looking for forever homes.

The three female dogs pictured here all have gentle, loving natures and would make wonderful family pets.

Holly is a gorgeous ball of love and joy. She’s a gentle soul – not pushy at all, and adores attention. Being intelligent, she will thrive on training and walks.

Notice is hereby given that The Milnerton Estates Limited proposes to undertake a Basic Assessment (BA) process for the installation of diesel storage facilities and generators at Rivergate Business Park, City Cape Town, Western Cape.

Cape Dachshund Rescue to host Mini Mutt Strut

ring your beloved small mutt for a strut and a possible prize in the upcoming Mini Mutt Strut competition arranged for the Cape Dachshund Rescue (CDR) organisation.

The CDR is a registered non-profit organisation whose business it is to rescue, rehabilitate and suitably rehome dachshunds across South Africa.

This, their first ever fun dog show, aims to raise funds for dachshunds in need.

The Mini Mutt Strut is open to all small dogs and will be hosted at Lilly’s Boutique Hotel & Daycare for Small Dogs in Joostenbergvlakte on 4 November from 09:30.

CDR boasts a quality pro-life approach and exceptional matchmaking skills.

In a nutshell, they take in rescued or surrendered dachshunds and dachshund-type dogs and place them in suitable pre-approved foster homes, where they receive oodles of love and care in preparation for their new lives. CDR then networks the dog across its digital channels until the perfect home

comes along.

“While our volunteers and foster ‘parents’ help make the vision of CDR not just a reality, but a huge success, we are heavily dependent on our supporters who donate to our cause,” says Kara Spamer, CDR chairperson.

“We rely on funds for essentials like sterilisations, other veterinary expenses, dog food, and occasionally transport costs for our adopted dogs making their way to their forever homes. It’s time for the SPCA MySchool Wiggle Waggle Walkathon, this year with a Halloween slant.

People ready to jump-start their summer with some wicked good fun are invited by the SPCA and partners to join them on Saturday 28 October at the School for Maths and Science in Firgrove Way, Tokai, for the 24th annual walkathon – the frightfully fun Howl-o-Ween.

The event will be filled with special treats – not without the tricks – for the fur-family.

The annual walkathon is one of the SPCA’s most important fundraisers, and this year’s celebrity emcees include Pasella presenter Mishka Patel, and singer/songwriter JP Robberts.

Registration opens at 13:30 and

the walk will begin at 14:30 punctually.

After the walk, visitors can enjoy a variety of Cape Town’s finest food vendors, music and giveaways.

Ssspring time is sssnake time in the Cape

I

t is not only people that venture out to enjoy the great outdoors in spring, with the warmer temperatures and longer hours of daylight.

It also triggers the same response in snakes, warns Shaun MacLeod, Western Cape snake rescue coordinator and also director of Reptile Educational Awareness Consultants.

“Be on the lookout for snakes on your outings during the spring and summer,” he says.

“Snakes top the list of the most misunderstood and feared of all animals. There are 27 naturally occurring species found between the Paarl mountain ranges and Cape Point.

“Of these, only three can cause unfortunate human medical priorities, if intentionally handled,” he says.

“Many harmless snakes meet untimely deaths at the hands of shovel-wielding hu-

mans. Even if you do not go out in search of snakes, you may encounter them on your spring and summer adventures,” he says.

Macleod advises people to move away when they encounter a snake.

“Give the creature room to escape. They deserve your healthy respect for your safety, as well as theirs.

“Remember, any warnings from a snake are meant to help avoid conflict. A snake will never attack a human, but will defend itself if given no other alternative,” he says.

According to Macleod snakes come out of hibernation every spring on the hunt for a much-needed meal. “Snakes are an important part of the natural food chain, eating a great variety of prey – from rats and birds to frogs and other reptiles.

“They form part of the very important balance in our ecosystem, controlling vermin rodents that destroy our crops and carry nu-

merous diseases. A simple equation: the more snakes we kill, the more rodents and pests there are.

“We have encroached into their natural habitat, through habitat degradation, fragmentation and urban expansion.

“Our ponds, heaps of building rubble and rockeries in and around our gardens and homes create micro-environments that will inevitably attract snakes,” he says.

There is no real way of keeping snakes off your property, he advises, “but if you keep your grass cut short and trees well trimmed, and clean up all your building rubble, then there is less likelihood for snakes to reside on your property.”

Klein Fluffy, oftewel Jacob, soos hy nou gedoop is, sterk mooi aan nadat hy meer as ’n week terug deur ’n brandweerman uit ’n verwoestende brand in Blackheath gered is (TygerBurger 18 Oktober).

Volgens Nicomé Joubert is die babakatjie nog bitter klein, ’n skrale drie weke as sy moes raai. “Hy was eers baie swak en vreeslik bang om self te loop, natuurlik van die trauma. Maar sedertdien is hy ’n nuwe katjie met nuwe woema. Genoeg liefde en sorg is die wenresep vir enige klein diertjie,” sê sy. Joubert werk ’n blok weg vanwaar die brand gewoed het, en het klein Jacob die dag daarna opgepas. “Die brandweerman wat hom gered het, het Jacob in ’n boks gesit so-

dat hulle hom DBV toe kon neem. Gelukkig het ’n ander held die boks gevat en die katjie geneem. Jacob was veearts toe sodat hy ondersoek kon word. Gelukkig het hy geen beserings opgedoen nie,” sê sy. “Hy is vir die naweek saam met ’n goeie Samaritaan huis toe en teen Maandag was hy skoon gebad en reeds goed aangepas. Sy vrees ná die trauma het amper heeltemal verdwyn. Dinsdag is die dingetjie saam met sy nuwe baas huis toe en is nou so gelukkig soos ’n babakatjie behoort te wees. Die leemte van ’n mamma sal sekerlik vir ’n rukkie bly, maar met genoeg liefde sal hy deurdruk,” vertel Nicomé.

TygerBurger het intussen verneem dat Jacob deur die plaaslike politikus Brendan van der Merwe, wykraadslikd van wyk 3 in Bellville, aangeneem is. Van der Merwe was dié dag op ’n vergadering in Blackheath en

op die perseel toe die brandweerman die bewende katjie uit die vuur gedra het. “Ek het hom Jacob gedoop om sy dapperheid en moed te simboliseer, nes Jacob van die Bybel.” Die klein diertjie het Van der Merwe dadelik na aan die hart gelê.

“Ons het met hom na ’n veearts in Stellenbosch gejaag, waar Jacob met antibiotika behandel is vir ’n ligte verkoue. Omdat hy so klein is, het hy spesiale sorg en aandag sowel as ’n spesiale dieet nodig,” sê Van der Merwe. Ná net ’n week by sy nuwe huis, is Jacob reeds baie selfstandig en weet selfs hoe om sy nuwe sandbak te gebruik. “Ek is baie lief vir hom. Hy het so vinnig aan my geheg geraak dat hy oral agter my aanloop.

“Hy is nou vier weke oud en het reeds ’n groot gevolg by ons kantoor hier in Blackheath,” sê Van der Merwe.

Vissers gevra: ‘Wat heet jóú wurm?’

ie Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) en vennote is besig met ’n studie oor die wurms wat deur plaaslike visvanggeesdriftiges gebruik word ten einde ’n taksonomiese sleutel en veldgids saam te stel.

Bloedwurms, wonderwurms, gruiswurms, maanskynwurms of poedingwurms – watter een van hierdie klomp gebruik vissermanne die meeste vir visaas en hoe kry hulle dit in die hande?

Dít is een van die vrae op ’n kortlys wat aan vissers versprei word deur die US en sy vennote, wat navorsers van Sanparke se Tuinroete Nasionale Park en die Knysnakom-projek insluit.

Dr. Carol Simon, ’n marienebioloog aan die US, sê die doel van hierdie vraelys is om ’n beter idee te kry van hoe groot die aanvraag na borselwurms is wat as aas gebruik word langs die Suid-Afrikaanse kuslyn.

Terselfdertyd hoop hulle ook om konsensus te bereik oor die algemene name wat in Suid-Afrika gebruik word om hierdie aasspesies te benoem.

“Ons navorsing toon dat algemene name waarmee na aasspesies verwys word, dikwels nie konsekwent gebruik word in veldgidse en inligtingsbrosjures en -pamflette nie en soms selfs nie eens in die wetenskaplike vaklektuur nie,” verduidelik sy.

Sy noem dat een so ’n algemene naam byvoorbeeld verwys na ’n groep soortgelyke wurms, óf na verskillende spesies; óf ’n wurm kan meer as een algemene naam hê.

Simon meen dié benaming kortwiek die doeltreffende bestuur van ’n belangrike hulpbron.

“Ons het foto’s van wurms wat gereeld bymekaargemaak word vir aas in die vraelys opgeneem en vra dan vir vissermanne om die algemeen bekende name daarvan

Die eindproduk sal ’n taksonomiese sleutel wees tot die visvangwurms van SuidAfrika, met ’n bykomende identifikasieveldgids vir vissermanne.

Simon sê hierdie werk is belangrik aangesien marienewurms belangrike ekologiese funksies vervul ten opsigte van ri-

viermondings en sandstrande, maar is ook uiters belangrike hulpbronne vir bestaans-, sowel as stokperdjievissers.

Voorafgaande data dui daarop dat sommige spesies wat in Suid-Afrika gebruik word, ook wêreldwyd wyd verspreid voorkom.

Persoonlike geldsake ONDER REDAKSIE VAN LOOD LA GRANGE

Dis nooit te vroeg om aan neseier te begin bou

E

k kom onlangs op ’n spotprentjie af wat die draak steek met die kommissie wat finansiële beplanners verdien vir hul werk. Die finansiële beplanner sê vir ’n man hy verkoop aftreepakkette. “Hoe werk hulle?” vra die man. “As ek genoeg van hulle verkoop, tree ek ryk af,” antwoord die finansiële beplanner.

Nogal snaaks, het ek gedink, maar as dit nie vir finansiële beplanners se harde werk was nie, sou baie meer mense as wat tans die geval is, brandarm aftree.

Hoe belangrik dit is om so vroeg moontlik in jou lewe te begin spaar vir aftrede, word dramaties deur die volgende voorbeeld geïllustreer.

Gestel jy begin om vir tien jaar lank aan die begin van elke jaar net R2 000 te belê wat 6% rente per jaar verdien.

Die rente word saam met die kapitaal herbelê sodat verdere rente op die rente ook verdien word. Aan die einde van die tiende jaar gaan jou belegging R27 943 werd wees.

As jy nou, ná tien jaar, die jaarlikse belegging staak, maar die kapitaal los om verder te groei teen 6% per jaar gaan jou belegging ná nog nege jaar R47 210 werd wees.

Dit is meer as dubbel die R20 000 wat jy uit jou eie sak belê het.

Vergelyk nou jou situasie met dié van ’n persoon wat in die jaar wanneer jy ophou om R2 000 per jaar te belê, begin om R4 000 per jaar te belê, waarop ook 6% rente per jaar verdien word wat weer herbelê word.

Ná nege jaar gaan die belegging vir die eerste keer meer as joune wees, naamlik R48 723.

Die persoon moes dus nege jaar lank dubbel soveel belê as wat jy belê het om jou belegging verby te steek. Hierdie persoon het inderdaad ’n “boete” van R2 000 per jaar vir nege jaar lank betaal vir sy of haar versuim om vroeër te begin spaar. ’n Mens kan natuurlik op verskeie maniere vir aftrede voorsiening maak.

Die staat moedig egter die publiek aan om deur middel van bydraes tot aftreefondse voorsiening te maak deur sodanige bydraes tot sekere perke as belastingaftrekkings toe te laat.

Probeer om, indien jy dit enigsins kan bekostig, die volle bedrag wat aftrekbaar is, by te dra.

Selfs al behoort jy aan ’n werkgewer se aftreefonds, is dit raadsaam om ’n finansiële beplanner te raadpleeg om te bereken of jy die volle bedrag bydra wat belastingaftrekbaar is. Indien nie, kan die balans wat aftrekbaar is tot ’n uittredingsannuïteitsfonds bygedra word.

Nuwe musiekwêreld gaan nou met JOOX­toep oop

ie splinternuwe musiekstroom-toep, JOOX van Tencent gaan Suid-Afrikaners in staat stel om musiek gerieflik te ontdek en te luister waar hulle ook al is.

JOOX, nou propvol Afrikaanse treffers, verskaf musiek en honderde speellyste vir elke bui, met baie van die musiek wat eksklusief net op die toep gevind kan word.

Die toep bied ’n gratis sowel as ’n betaalde BBP-opsie, wat gebruikers in staat stel om musiek te stroom sonder om data te gebruik. Nóg ’n voordeel is drie verskillende stroomkwaliteitopsies wat gebruikers toelaat om hul data te beheer.

Faunal survey in Cape Flats Nature Reserve T

he sixth annual faunal survey was conducted from 19 to 21 October at the Cape Flats Nature Reserve on the grounds of the University of the Western Cape.

The Thursday until the Saturday saw Biodiversity and Conservation Biology (BCB) staff and students, as well as hobbyists, volunteers and school learners, all joining together in the fun while collecting valuable scientific information.

More than 60 participants spent day and night “bundu-bashing” through the reserve in search of anything that moved.

On the Thursday various traps were set out. On the Friday morning the tortoise survey took place under the guidance of Dr Martin Hendricks.

Only a section of the reserve can be covered and this year a very overgrown part that is in dire need of a fire was surveyed.

Twelve angulate (Chersina angulata) tortoises were found – seven males, four females and one sub-adult (sex cannot be determined yet).

The survey also covered a count of reptiles (25 chameleons were spotted along with eggeaters and cross-marked whip snakes, as well as various species of geckos and lizards); mammals (five rodent species including mice, gerbils, rats and shrews); birds (35 species recorded, with one addition); amphibians (eight sand frogs were recorded in

status of a national monument.

Today it is a provincial heritage site, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

ie sestien Premierligasokkerspanne kry almal hierdie naweek ’n blaaskans van PSL-wedstryde, maar is almal gewikkel in die Telkombeker-uitklopstryd.

Ajax Cape Town en Cape Town City reis onderskeidelik na Polokwane op Saterdag 28 Oktober en Baroka op Sondag 29 Oktober. Albei wedstryde word in die Peter Mokaba-stadion in Polokwane gespeel.

Cape Town City het verlede jaar die Telkombeker verower en is een van drie van die grootste spanne wat vir die kompetise gekeur is.

Die ander twee is Bidvest Wits en Mamelodi Sundowns.

City het in sy opmars na die eindstryd afgereken met Bloemfontein Celtic, Baroka, Free State Stars en Supersport United.

Hulle pak juis nou vir Baroka in die eerste kragmeting.

City sal sy titel wil verdedig nadat hy op 14 Oktober in die MTN8-eindstryd met strafdoele teen Eric Tinkler se Supersport United verloor het.

Supersport United met 1-0 uitgeskakel. Daarna het Supersport met Mamelodi Sundowns in die kwarteindstryd en in die halfeindstryd met Orlando Pirates met dieselfde telling afgereken.

Ajax se oorwinning Saterdag oor Bloemfontein Celtic in die Athlone-stadion was net die inspuiting wat die span nodig gehad het om vertroue op te bou.

Ajax het gewys dat hy kan wen en ook aanslae in die laaste kwartier van ’n wedstryd kan afweer, soos wat hulle teen Bloemfontein Celtic gewys het.

speel en indien die Urban Warriors Saterdag se wedstryd wen, sal die span genoeg vertroue hê vir sy volgende PSL-wedstryd teen Platinum Stars op Woensdag 1 November in die Royal Bafokeng-stadion in Rustenburg.

In Saterdag se wedstryd teen Bloemfontein Celtic het Ajax talle doelkanse verbrou. Teen Polokwane sal die Urban Warriors dié kanse moet benut, want hulle kry net een kans om dié Telkombekerstryd te wen, anders is dit neusie verby vir die res van die kompetisie. Ajax het laas die Telkombeker in 2008 met 2-1 teen Orlando Pirates in Durban gewen en die volgende jaar teen Kaizer Chiefs vasgeval. Tashreeq Morris het gewys dat hy kan afrond en dit was ook duidelik teen Bloemfontein Celtic dat die afrigter, Stanley Menzo, se wedstrydplanne nou stadig begin vrugte afwerp.

Die moontlikheid bestaan dat Toriq Losper dalk weer opgeroep kan word na die senior span vir die Telkombekerstryd.

Hy het die afgelope ruk vir Ajax in die Multichoice Diskikompetisie gespeel.

Tashreeq Morris van Ajax Cape Town en Aphiwe Lubisi van Bloemfontein Celtic is hier in ’n stryd om die bal gewikkel in die PSL­kragmeting Saterdag in die Athlone­stadion.

Morris was een van die tuisspan se doelskieters in hul oorwinning van 2­1 oor Bloem­ fontein Celtic. Die ander doel is deur Bantu Mzwakali vir Ajax geskiet, terwyl Isaac Nhlapo vir Celtic gedoel het.

He labelled 2017 as a year of fun, and even though Richard Murray did have a lot of fun, it also turned out to be one of his best seasons ever.

The 2017 season had a greater variety of events on Murray’s calendar, and the focus wasn’t just on the World Triathlon Series as in previous years. “It was a very interesting year. Things did get a bit more serious than planned when I started to have some of my best results while ‘having fun’, but I had a lot of fun for sure,” says Murray.

He made his 70.3 debut this year. “To be honest my first 70.3 event did not meet the expectations I had beforehand. I was keen to do a bit better and maybe podium or even win, but who would have guessed so many top professional athletes would have turned up! Finishing fifth was good, but my run time was not what I was planning. I will do better next time.”

troduction of the Super League Triathlon. Winning the first edition early in the season on Hamilton Island was one of the highlights of 2017 for Murray. Other big moments included a win at the Cape Town World Cup, a hat-trick at the New Plymouth World Cup and three WTS podiums. “It really was a very good year of fun!”

Murray is very excited with the prospect of the Super League in the coming seasons. “It was a great experience. I’m leading the rankings so far and I am keen to make sure that I stay up there. The new series is very refreshing and I believe that this will grow from event to event.” Murray finished third in the second event on Jersey Island. It was also the last race of his season.

Murray will make a few changes again to his planning for 2018. “I do have plans for another 70.3. And I will race in the Super League events as well as a few WTS events. There will probably be fewer Bundesliga races next year.”
