ROAD DEATHS: SA CHILDREN 10 TIMES MORE LIKELY TO DIE IN A CAR ACCIDENT THAN EUROPEAN CHILDREN

he chance of a child being killed in a car accident is 10 times higher in South Africa than in Europe. What’s more, a child is 25 times more likely to end up in hospital after being run over by a car in South Africa than in Europe. This disturbing and somewhat shocking news was shared by Prof Sebastian van As from the Red Cross Children’s Hospital during World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. The day, organised by South Africans Against Drunk Driving (Sadd), was held at Milnerton High School on Monday morning. Van As, addressing family members of accident victims, nurses, fire and rescue personnel and other guests, also explained that children injured in car crashes are more common in Africa and India than anywhere else in the world. According to him, the majority of all emergencies at Red Cross are as a result of motor vehicle accidents and not diseases. “We can stop this and halve the work of our department,” Van As emphasised. He said to prevent child deaths on the roads, parents and adults should play their part by not allowing children under the age of eight alone on the road, and that children should always be strapped in when travelling in a motor vehicle. “The majority of the kids we see coming into hospital were not restrained, despite the law making it compulsory. “At least 80% of children are not restrained. “Some pass away, but those who survive sustain permanent brain damage. “Also, every week I get a two-year-old who was run over because he or she was in the road,” Van As explained. With the festive season upon us, the Western Cape Department of Transport says they hope the number of road deaths in the province will remain low. According to Donald Grant, minister of transport and guest speaker at the event, in the Western Cape they know where, when and how road users are dying. “We have identified the critical days and

He added that South Africa is a signatory to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and the Brasilia Declaration on Road Safety, with the target of reducing global road fatalities by 50% by the year 2020. “Locally, in the Western Cape, the province has committed to two road safety targets: firstly a reduction in road traffic mortality rates from 21 per 100 000 to 16 per
we? We have to say no,” Smit says. Sadd is a non-profit organisation that supports the victims of road traffic accidents and the loved ones left behind in the case of fatalities. According to information, the first ever recorded car crash in South Africa occurred on 1 October 1903. Since then over half a million people have died on the roads. 100 000 by 2019, and secondly a reduction in child road mortality rates from 11 per 100 000 to seven per 100 000 by 2019 for the ages 0 to 14 years,” Grant said. Speaking on behalf of Sadd, Caro Smit, its founder and director, says they too have a similar goal. Sadd, a member of the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, has a target to reduce road fatalities and serious injuries by 50%. “However, by this we allow 650 000 people to die on the roads, and as an NPO why should
