eports of smash-and-grab incidents on Potsdam Road and Malibongwe Drive surfaced recently and motorists using these routes have been warned to be vigilant when travelling on these roads.

Malibongwe Drive, which stretches from Rivergate to Contermanskloof, is normally congested during peak hour traffic, with provincial traffic vehicles often patrolling the area. Traffic officials are also regularly visible on Potsdam Road, which runs through Dunoon. Despite this, it is reported that both roads are dangerous due to smash-

and-grab incidents.

News of smash-and-grabs was shared with residents on a local community Facebook page recently where several people indicated that they too have nearly fallen prey.

Carla Greig, spokesperson for the Table View Neighbourhood Watch, says they are aware of such incidents, but only those which have been reported on Facebook and to the local police.

Asked where specifically the attacks occur, she responded: “A few on the bridge going over the N7 towards Malibongwe, but more often along Potsdam Road.”

“These guys are so fast and quick you don’t even see them coming,” he wrote.

One resident commented saying that such attacks have been occurring for more than a year.

“I stopped driving through there about four years ago after an incident. They work in teams of three or more; grab your valuables and disperse into the township in different directions,” another resident wrote.

mergency services responded to a serious motor vehicle accident in which two vehicles nearly collided head-on with each other on Wednesday night last week.

The accident occurred on the R27 between Big Bay Boulevard and Atlantic Beach.

According to one West Coast resident who was on his way home and was the first person on the scene, one vehicle ended up in a ditch behind bushes, completely hidden from view from the road and almost 100 metres away from the other vehicle.

The right sides of the vehicles collided with each other, he says.

The resident, who shared the information on the Table View Neighbours Facebook page, says emergency services, including Community Medics and other am-

bulance services, arrived shortly thereafter. The police and the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services were also dispatched.

Theo Layne, Fire and Rescue spokesperson, says they responded to the call at 20:58.

“There were two motor vehicles involved in the accident, in which four people sustained minor injuries,” he says.

Jolene Page, spokesperson for Community Medics, says their service was called out to the scene at 20:40.

“On our arrival, our crew found that two vehicles had collided. One of the vehicles had left the road and was lying in a ditch in the bushes.

“Fortunately, none of the occupants were trapped inside the vehicle and our medics were able to provide assistance,” says Page.

She says there were six patients in total on the scene, five of whom were transported to hospital. “The injuries ranged from minor to moderate,” Page says.

A vehicle ended up in a ditch after colliding with another vehicle on the R27 on Wednesday night last week.

A total of 54 children from Melkbosstrand and the surrounding areas were treated to an art workshop hosted by 10 facilitators from the Lalela Foundation recently.

The event started off with some games and moved onto meditation and then artwork, organisers say.

The theme of the workshop was “The Art of Listening”.

The Melkbosstrand Rotary Club supplied treats and drinks.

“A good time was had by all,” says Liesl Schoonraad, convener.

Schoonraad and the Strong 4 Life organisation, along with the ACVV Koeberg, Matla A Bana, the police and the Lalela Foundation, all joined hands to arrange the event in recognition of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

Help provide Xmas meals for less fortunate West Coast resident Elizabeth Viljoen is calling on the community to assist her in preparing a hot Christmas meal for the less fortunate this December.

Viljoen says she would like to present a meal consisting of chicken, meat, vegetables, pasta, mince curry with rice, a trifle sponge pudding and juice to those who often go hungry at this time of year.

“Every year for the last few years I have put together a meal for the less fortunate in

the Brooklyn, Maitland and Milnerton areas, and once again I am looking for help from the community so as to give those in distress, the homeless and the elderly a little something for Christmas.

“If we as a community come together, we can help the neglected feel special for at least one day this year.

“If everyone in the community were to donate just a tin of beans, a lettuce or a R10 bag of mince, or even just one potato, imag-

ine what a special day we can give those in need,” says Viljoen.

She is also collecting secondhand clothing and toys for needy children.

The lunch will be served at the Thomas Riddle Moth Hall in Koeberg Road on Sunday 24 December at 14:30.

“Anyone is invited to come along,” Viljoen says.

onstruction work on the new Centre Point Shopping Centre in Milnerton is well on track, with nearly 65% of tenants confirmed.

This is according to a spokesperson speaking on behalf of the centre.

Sekgoela Sekgoela says the construction of the centre and residential apartments is progressing at an impressive rate.

“The expectation is that the centre will be officially opened on 26 July 2018,” Sekgoela says.

A roof-wetting event was held on Tuesday 28 November to celebrate the casting of the roof concrete.

“The centre will provide both lifestyle and convenience – placing the right tenant in the right shop,” says Mark Teuchert of Lazercor Developments.

Sekgoela says the centre has already

achieved its initial goal of confirmed tenants with anchors such as Pick n Pay, including its liquor store, as well as Clicks and Ignite Fitness.

The development boasts three levels: basement parking, two retail levels and two levels of residential apartments.

The residential component will consist of 49 upmarket apartments.

Sekgoela says the centre was recently awarded the Best Safety Award in the Western Cape for having zero injuries during the construction.

Gert Buitendag, on behalf of Aveng Grinaker LTA, says the project has already made an impact in that it has created over 1000 jobs for the immediate area of Milnerton and the surrounding areas.

The centre will be managed by Mowana Properties, a property management company with extensive experience in managing offices, as well as industrial, residential and retail properties.

Sand on the pedestrian walkways, cycle lanes and parking areas at Blouberg Beach is an unavoidable issue, the City of Cape Town says.

Last week TygerBurger reported on the dire state of the popular beachfront after receiving a complaint from a Coral Road resident (“Beachfront in need of upgrade”, 29/11).

Resident Benny-Ree Bezuidenhout told the newspaper that he has been trying to raise the matter and have the problem resolved for nearly a year now.

This week, City of Cape Town spokesperson, Hayley van der Woude, responded, saying that the City’s Recreation and Parks Department employs teams of workers through the Expanded Public Works Programme to remove sand and clean the area on a daily basis.

“Unfortunately, given the everpresent south-easterly wind, it is difficult to keep all areas clean at all times,” Van der Woude says.

Bezuidenhout says sand on the walkways, cycle lanes and parking areas is not a pleasant sight and that it is unsafe for visitors to the beach.

His cries were echoed by the local Table View Ratepayers’ Association vice-chairperson, Mandy da Matta, who claims that the matter has been on the subcouncil agenda for several years now.

elkbosstrand residents can look forward to some great entertainment this December when several strongmen and strongwomen will be descending on the small seaside town for the upcoming Strongman Competition.

The dates for the competition, in which large trucks will be pulled around and tyres will be thrown from one side to the other, are Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 December.

The event, which is organised by Strong 4 Life, is in recognition of 16 Days of Activism Against Child Abuse.

“We at Strong 4 Life have partnered with the police and Matla A Bana to send out a powerful message, that child abuse in South Africa needs to stop.

“In South Africa a child is raped every three minutes and we want to bring awareness to the horrific statistics around child abuse,” says organiser Liesl Schoonraad.

Schoonraad says strongmen and strongwomen will show their support for this cause on the day and that they hope to reach children who are silent about abuse.

They also want to show them that there are people who care, people who are there to help, and that they are not alone, she says.

The competition is hosted for strongmen and strongwomen who feel just as passionate about the cause against child abuse.

“Pulling trucks and lifting cars and atlas stones is what we do best, and if that shows a child that they too have the inner strength to deal with their pain, then our mission was successful,” says Schoonraad, who was also a victim of childhood bullying. There will be a tug-of-war competition where corporate companies can enter teams as part of the activities, hosted by Matla A Bana.

“We are so excited about the event, and with the food stalls, jumping castle, activities and of course the Strongman Competition, it’s going to be a real festival.

“Not to mention our special guest athlete on Saturday, Anton Franken, who lost both his legs on border patrol,” says Schoonraad.

The event will run from 10:00 to 16:00 on both days and takes place in Beach Road near the NSRI building.

“The services in Melkbosstrand are all standing together to make this a massive success,” says Schoonraad.

Strong 4 Life have been visiting schools since 2012 to address abuse and bullying in schools across South Africa.

“I started Strong 4 Life as I am on a mission to help people find their inner strength and become strong for life,” says Schoonraad.

Abuse and bullying can have lifelong negative effects on people, often right through to adulthood. This is, however, not the case for one Melkbosstrand resident who has turned being a victim of bullying into a positive.

Liesl Schoonraad, a former strongwoman and member of the non-profit organisation Strong 4 Life, today tries to help and motivate those caught up in similar situations. She arranges and conducts talks on abuse and bullying at schools across South Africa.

Her story, she says, started when she was young. “I had dreams, but they were shattered by abusers in my life. Bullies at school made me feel I could accomplish nothing.

“At the age of 39, however, I decided to live a lifelong dream by swimming to Robben Island. I did this on my 40th birthday. While training in the gym I actually discovered I had a physical strength I was not even aware of,” she explains.

Schoonraad decided to use this strength and started participating in strongman sport activities. “I remember as a child watching World’s Strongest Man and believing I could get through the challenges I was facing. I was totally inspired by these strong athletes.”

Her first strength event involved pull-

ing a 10-ton truck and then only three weeks later, a Dakota aircraft.

“I took part in South Africa’s Strongest Woman Competition and was asked by a social worker to speak at a local school.

Before I knew it I was visiting schools across the country speaking against bullying.”

Her most recent event was in December last year where she flipped a total of 100 tons of tyres for an awareness campaign for the Reeva Steenkamp Foundation.

“My passion is for kids and for them to feel loved and heard,” Schoonraad says.

Strong 4 Life and a group of supporting organisations are currently organising the Strongman Competition taking place next week in Melkbosstrand. . According to Judy Strickland, founder and director of Hope House Counselling Centre, they deal with regular incidents of bullying among children and adults.

“It has become increasingly apparent that we need to take serious action within schools to change this behaviour.

Hope House is looking into developing a programme that helps children to develop and adopt empathetic behaviours. A core part of this project is getting parents and teachers to model empathy, showing children around them how to treat others,” Strickland says.

The Strongman Competition, scheduled to take place on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 December in Melkbosstrand, may become an annual event.

This is the commitment made by local ward 23 councillor, Nora Grose.

Grose says she has already discussed this initiative with her ward committee members and has secured a budget for 2018 where they will showcase “strength” – not only physical, but through the unity of a community endeavouring to make a difference in the lives of those too scared to speak out.

The Strongman Competition is being held in support of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

Grose says she fully supports the event.

“When the convenor approached me for assistance with the event application, I realised she needed support – hence my decision

to get involved with the organising and facilitating of the event,” she says.

Grose adds that Liesl Schoonraad, the convener, who has a long history of being bullied herself, has made a conscious decision to stand up and bring an end to abuse.

“Instead of using a hashtag, she decided to call upon a group of athletes to showcase their strengths in support of standing strong in more than one way.”

Grose is also calling on all residents and businesses to support the event.

She says funds raised during the competition will be donated to local communitybased organisations that work with abused children.

“We are hoping to raise R10 000 that will be donated to identified local organisations.

“To fully address and generate ongoing effective programmes to cut to the bone of this evil will cost thousands, but this small amount will give us a head start – a mere stepping stone for our future plans to address this evil in our society.”

Crime awareness drive held at mall T

able View police recently hosted a crime awareness drive at the newly opened Table Bay Mall to inform the public about women and child abuse.

The event was held on Thursday last week.

Captain Adriana Chandler, police spokesperson, says the event formed part of the police’s 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.

The South African Police Service Band also performed at the event, which attracted many people to the mall, she says.

“One lady was in tears as she thanked the police for the performance of the band. The management of the mall appreciated the entertainment and awareness initiative by the police,” says Chandler.

A pledge was also signed by visitors as a sign of commitment towards the campaign against abuse.

“The community was very pleased about the awareness drive and stated that it is very important for everyone to be made aware of how to avoid becoming a victim of crime,” Chandler says.

Milnerton artist performs at festive concert A young and talented Milnerton artist took centre stage at the festive lights concert held this past weekend.

The up-and-coming muso Nyota Parker, who was the winner of the second annual festive lights switch-on music challenge, was one of several artists in the line-up who entertained the crowd on Sunday 3 December at the Grand Parade, Cape Town.

Last week mayor Patricia de Lille said she was pleased to have met the young rapper, singer and songwriter. The 17 year old beat 94 other entries and was crowned the overall winner. She walked away with a cash prize of R10 000.

On Sunday Nyota shared a stage with many other well-known artists including Vicky Sampson, Freshlyground, Jimmy Nevis, Craig Lucas, The Rockets and Friends, as well as recent Idols winner Paxton. The festive lights were switched on at 20:30.

It’s more than nice to know your neighbours Milnerton police have launched a campaign encouraging people to get to know their neighbours.

The Know Your Neighbour Awareness Campaign kicked off two weeks ago.

Captain Nopaya Madyibi, police spokesperson, says they urge people to create good relationships with their neighbours and to exchange contact numbers.

This is especially important over the up-

coming festive season.

Be curious about the wellbeing of your neighbours, Madyibi says.

“People living in the same street can travel together on their way to work to minimise their chances of being robbed.

“Be safe and form WhatsApp groups to alert one another should anything happen, or to report suspicious people,” Madyibi adds.

ith Cape Town still facing extreme drought conditions, it is important for all homeowners to be aware of the impact of the drought on their home and therefore their insurance.

There are a number of areas of the home that can be impacted by water restrictions, including water pipes, swimming pools and gardens.

This is according to Dawie Loots, CEO of MUA Insurance Acceptances, who states that damage caused by drought is not a peril that is typically covered by insurance policies, because normally insurance policies cover sudden and unforeseen events, but a drought is a gradual operational cause.

The general principle in insurance is that policyholders should take all reasonable care to safeguard and protect their assets, he says. “In fact, people should act as though they are not insured. This premise also applies in a drought situation – policyholders need to do whatever is reasonably practical to minimise damage when they know about a situation like this.”

Water pipes The current water rationing that is taking place, which involves the complete cutting off of the water supply for short periods, can have a detrimental effect on water pipes, says Loots. “The turning on and off of water can cause pipes to burst, with subsequent risk of flooding and therefore excessive water bills. Clients would have to be aware of this fact and should be more observant in and around their properties to ensure there are no burst or leaking pipes.”

Swimming pools With reports that the water is evaporating quicker than it is raining, homeowners should cover their swimming pools to minimise water evaporation while they are not able to fill the pool due to the water restrictions, says Loots. “Swimming pools are designed to have water in them, so the system, walls and tiling of pools are more susceptible to damage if they are left exposed to the sunlight with no water. Fibreglass pools in particular need water weight from the inside to prevent them from popping out of the ground.”

Homeowners should switch off the pump if the water level drops to below the weir, as this will prevent the pump from sucking in air and in turn burning out, he says. “It is also a good idea to open the cover when it is raining to get as much water in the pool as possible.”

Gardens Due to the fact that drought is not a peril, no insurance policy will cover the reinstatement of gardens due to not being able to water the plants, says Loots. “Even though homeowners are prohibited by law and water restriction limitations from watering their gardens, they can still try to catch rainwater, use greywater or even get a borehole installed – therefore there are certain measures you can take to save your garden.”

In order to find out exactly what is and is not covered by the insurance policy, it is best for homeowners to speak to their broker who will be able to guide them through the complexities of the impact of drought on their insurance, concludes Loots.

In die jongste voorval het ’n 56-jarige man van Durbanville ’n klag by die Durbanville-polisie aanhangig gemaak dat hy afgepers word nadat hy naakfoto’s aan vermoedelik ’n vrou gestuur het. Die persoon het hom gedreig dat die foto’s op sosiale media versprei sal word as hy nie ’n sekere bedrag betaal nie. Die man het toe R500 betaal, maar die persoon het nóg geld geëis, het kapt. Marchell Rhode, Durbanville-polisiewoordvoerder, gesê. Volgens hom is daar beslis ’n toename in klagte van afpersing met naakfoto’s. TygerBurger het vroeër ook berig oor ’n voorval waarin ’n jong man afgepers is met die naakfoto’s van homself wat hy vir ’n vrou per selfoon gestuur het. Dié 23-jarige man het ’n vrou op 5 Oktober op sosiale media ontmoet en hulle het per selfoon naakfoto’s vir mekaar gestuur.

Hy is egter afgepers dat as hy nie R6 000 betaal nie, die foto’s op Facebook versprei sal word, het Rhode gesê. Hy het R1 000 aan haar betaal, maar die persoon het nog geld geëis.

Niemand is nog in verband met enige van die voorvalle in hegtenis geneem nie. Rhode het mense gewaarsku om nie naakfoto’s op sosiale media te plaas of vir iemand te stuur nie.

Voormalige reisagent wat op borgtog was nadat sy mense na bewering met “goedkoop” vlugte bedrieg het, is terug agter tralies nadat sy na bewering voortgegaan het met haar streke terwyl sy op borgtog was.

Kim Robbertse (35), wat voorheen geregistreer was as reisagent, het na bewering kaartjies vir goedkoop vlugte aanlyn verkoop aan onder meer slagoffers in Durbanville en in ander noordelike voorstede. Dié vlugte het egter nooit bestaan nie.

Sy is in hegtenis geneem in verband met die nuwe sake toe sy op die vorige aanklagte in die Bellville-handelshof verskyn het.

Robbertse sou gister (Dinsdag) in die Kaapstad-landdroshof aansoek om borgtog in die nuwe sake gedoen het. Dit was met ter perse gaan onbekend of sy borgtog toegestaan is of nie.

In ’n verklaring het kapt. Lloyd Ramovha, woordvoerder vir die polisie se direktoraat vir prioriteitsmisdaadondersoeke (Valke), gesê sy is in 2016 in hegtenis geneem vir landwye bedrog ter waarde van minstens R7 miljoen.

Sy het na bewering goedkoop vlugkaartjies aanlyn adverteer en deposito’s ingevorder. Etlike slagoffers is by lughawens gestrand gelaat op die dag wat hul vlugte glo sou vertrek het, lui die verklaring.

Sy is op die nuwe aanklagte, waarin sy glo dieselfde modus operandi gebruik het, in hegtenis geneem toe sy juis in verband met die vorige aanklagte op Donderdag 23 November in die Bellville-handelshof verskyn het.

Soos Saartjie is dié nuwe wynreeks raar MARITA MEYER

H

aar naam is Saartjie en haar gunsteling-druif is ’n semillon. Sy’t net oë vir een man – haar mens-pa Arno Smith, die wynmaker by Hillcrest.

As Arno op die kwad spring om deur die wingerde te ry, ry Saartjie saam. As Arno vroegoggend druiwe pluk om te proe, proe Saartjie al stertswaaiend saam. Haar gunsteling-druif is semillon.

Toe Arno dus aan ’n naam moes dink vir Hillcrest se nuwe enkelkultivar-wynreeks, was Saartjie die logiese keuse. Soos Saartjie, is die nuwe reeks enig in sy soort.

“Saartjie is ’n besondere Jack Russelltjie,” vertel Arno. Sy was die kleinste van al die babahondjies en ietwat skaam. Sy’t so ’n oulike hartvormige vlekkie op haar voorkop. Ek was dadelik verlief.”

Die dertigjarige Arno, ’n oud-leerder van die Hoërskool J.G. Meiring, het sewe jaar gelede by Hillcrest begin werk ná hy sy studies op Elsenburg voltooi het.

Een van sy vriende uit sy Elsenburg-dae het ’n Jack Russell, genaamd Boet, gehad.

“Ek’t toe gesê die dag wat ek ’n hond kry, gaan ek haar Saartjie noem. Soos die karakters in ons eerste leesboek op skool, Boet en Saartjie.”

Daar’s ’n ander Saartjie ook in Arno se familie – sy tannie van Namibië. En volgens Arno is die twee Saartjies baie dieselfde – “twee fierce old ladies” wat seker maak hulle word gehoor as dinge nie na hul sin verloop nie.

Saartjie-die-hond is deesdae ’n celebrity in die Durbanville-wynvallei. Kinders en ander hondekinders kom kuier graag vir haar by die restaurant op die plaas. Maar moenie jouself flous nie – sy sal eers haar blaffe blaf om seker te maak jy weet wie’s die baas van

dié plaas!

Haar gesiggie verskyn ook op die etiket van die nuwe wynbottels – vernuftig geteken deur Arno se swaer, Jonathan Mitchell.

Arno het in 2016 begin eksperimenteer met semillon-druiwe, wat gewoonlik in versnitte gebruik word.

Hy’t ’n ton van die druiwe geoes en dit natuurlik in ou Franse eikehoutvate laat gis.

Geen kommersiële gis is bygevoeg om die proses te bespoedig nie – ’n tegniek wat wild fermentation genoem word.

Ná gisting plaasgevind het, is die wyn vir ’n verdere ses maande in die vate gelaat om te verouder. Die resultaat het selfs Arno se verwagtinge oortref en omdat dié druif Saartjie se gunsteling is, is die wyn vernoem na sy viervoetige vriend.

Die sukses het Arno aangespoor om verder te eksperimenteer en in 2004 het hy besluit om drie ander kultivars aan te plant: Cabernet Franc, Malbec en Petit Verdot. Dit was ’n dapper stap, want Hillcrest was nog altyd bekend vir sy Bordeaux-wyne.

Arno se waagstuk het geslaag en nou pryk die landgoed met ’n fantastiese reeks enkelkultivar-wyne. Die drie rooi wyne is van die 2016-oesjaar, terwyl die wit wyn vanjaar geoes is.

Die nuwe wynreeks is verlede week by ’n geselligheid op die wynplaas bekendgestel.

Die verskillende wyne is saam met klein bordjies kos (tapasstyl) bedien.

Saartjie was ook daar – sy’t al stertswaaiend ’n draai by elke tafel gemaak en haar soos ’n regte celeb gedra. Al wat dié madam nie self kan doen nie, is haar handtekening uitdeel. Sy’t haar mens-pa gevra om die wynbottels te onderteken.

Book to help prevent abuse A new book, written in language children can understand, is now available for free to guide parents and role players on preventing child sexual abuse.

The release of the book coincided with World Aids Day on 1 December, but also forms part of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

The authors, a social worker and a clinical psychologist, have more than 50 years of combined experience in the field of child protection.

It is for this reason that Edith Kriel and Marita Rademeyer decided to use that combined knowledge to develop the book, titled Preventing Child Sexual Abuse: A Resource for Parents, Caregivers and Teachers, which they know will help parents talk to young children about bodies, sex and body rules.

The activity book, available from Jelly Beanz, a non-profit organisation that works with children and families who have suffered trauma and abuse, is written in a way that engages children and guides parents step by step in making a serious discussion fun, according to a Jelly Beanz statement.

“The parent thus has the privilege of being the first person to discuss sexuality with the child and to cement healthy values in this very important part of a child’s life,” the organisation further states.

According to a study published by the Optimus Foundation in 2017, one in three SA children, including boys, suffers sexual abuse, Jelly Beanz says.

“Children are bombarded with sexual messages on television, social media, magazines and on the internet. Young people are being exposed to pornography at a rate never experienced before in our country.

“Unfortunately children often act out what they have seen, which has led to an enormous increase in children being abused by other children – a phenomenon referred to as child-on-child sexual abuse.”

Jelly Beanz believes that parents and caregivers need to engage children in open and honest conversations about bodies and sexuality to help prevent sexual abuse.

“The disconcerting truth is that unless parents and caregivers speak to children timeously, children learn about sex and bodies from friends, older siblings, the internet and even sexual predators. The information they get is often distorted or incorrect. Children learn from their parents’ silence that the topic of sex is taboo, which leads many children to keep quiet about what they have seen and experienced.”

Let’s get real for a minute. Women don’t want to be empowered. They are forced to be. This life in which we find ourselves has created a void for strong women to step up and ignore their natural roles as mothers, wives and nurturers to do their part: making a financial contribution to unstable economies and overpriced commodities.

Women are being made to choose between cancelling an important work meeting and watching their daughter’s graduation. They are disheartened by the fact that they are pitching an idea to a room full of men – while their son plays his last cricket match of the season and they haven’t been able to attend one.

Women are strong. We are naturally programmed to ensure the survival of our species. We will kill for our kids and will always put their needs and their hopes and We will go out of dreams far above our own. We will go our way to out of our way to worship our worship our husbands and treat husbands and them as the master treat them as of the house – although we both the master of work full days. We will “hunt” and the house – “gather” the food and groceries so although we no-one has to both work full search at the last minute for a bar of days ... soap. We will wake up at 04:00 to bake a tray of cupcakes for a school party. We’ll agree to PTA roles and nearly kill ourselves to meet the expectations of the teachers and stay-athome moms who cannot understand how we handle it all ...

We will use our resources to fundraise and sell pancakes, in-between answering emails on our androids and keeping an eye on our children’s sporting events.

Women cannot be women. We cannot wake up and take five minutes to snuggle our kids, get them ready for school and then leave to face endless hours in the day ... Instead, we snowball from room to room, ensuring that the mad cyclone of early morning events, school lunches and breakfasts, hubby’s work meal and the dogs’ food are all in place before we spend the last five minutes on a shower, our teeth and hair. It’s only once we’re five hours into office emails that we realise we haven’t had anything to eat or drink ourselves. As a woman, at some point, you must admit failure: You cannot hold a job, be a mom and maintain your family home, so you have to choose one.

When I say choose, I mean you need to pick your career over it all. You have to work because you pay for at least half of everything. You put your kids in aftercare and employ a domestic worker. This woman is living a portion of your life that you cannot find the time to enjoy – raising your kids and enjoying your home while you’re out there “juggling balls” and slaving away. Women don’t want to be empowered. We are forced to be. What we truly want is to be women.

It’s no wonder half the women you meet are on calming meds or seeing a psychologist. The other half are addicts: wine, gym, running ... we are broken.

I shudder to think of all the women who run away from home; who take their own lives; who get drunk every night just to cope. So how should women really feel empowered? How about sitting and enjoying a hot cup of tea for a change; watching their husband and kids hang up the washing once in a while; coming home to a cooked meal and tidy home?

Day hospital run like Zim’s health system Re. “Trip to clinic a nightmare for Brooklyn resident” (30/08).

I know this day hospital (Albow Gardens Clinic) has been in the newspaper countless times, but since then nothing has changed!

On 17 November I went to go fetch my meds that I missed on 2 November as I couldn’t find my card, because my daughter is always scratching in my stuff and our names are a bit similar (once I thought I had my card but took hers by accident). So I got there and my parcel was no longer there. So I put my card in the box and waited for them to call my name for my folder. A few people put their cards in after me. After waiting for an hour I realised that they were calling the people who had put their cards in after mine. As I explained already, I missed the date as I didn’t know which date it was and only got my card on 17 November.

First the pharmacist gave me the story that my meds had been sent back to whoknows-where and they have to find out if I didn’t actually get them, but obviously they tick on the list if you came for them or not. So another hour goes past and a lady I know and to whom I was chatting, who came in more than a half an hour after I approached the pharmacist, was called to collect her meds. I asked the pharmacist if my folder is there already, but no! I went to a woman who seemingly just sits or walks around the whole day and explained that I had been waiting for a very long time already. She said the meds are kept for a few days and are then sent back and

now the pharmacists have to physically take them off the shelves! I asked them what’s taking so long and how many more hours must I wait?

Then she started getting rude. She looked at her screen and ignored me! I left without my medication and this was not the first time. If it weren’t for our taxes they wouldn’t have a job to go to.

I am a friendly, mostly quiet type, but don’t step on my toes.

It is absurd to cut your meds off a month before you must go back to the hospital, when the hospital gives you a script for six months.

Stop complaining and do something I notice how often people complain, with social media seemingly the ideal outlet for many venting frustrations, and how seldom they take the time and effort to be effective through participation in due process to yield improved outcomes.

Humans don’t seem to like change – only talking about it in-between moaning.

We need to start being the change we want to see. Give our youth some role models.

I am pretty sure he or she has not ventured out of DA territory, because they will realise how good we have it here. Yes, the water situation is a problem, but there is only so much money available to be used for everything that everybody wants or needs. I drive extensively around South Africa and no province comes anywhere close to the Western Province. We don’t want to lose what we have because we complain we didn’t have enough.

“Jou lyf raak net nooit heeltemal gewoond daaraan nie,” sê die akteur Tim Theron, wat in Bellville gebore is.

“Maar dit is letterlik die enigste uitdaging wat ek sou kon uitwys,” skerm hy.

In Vuil Wasgoed volg kykers die verhaal van Wim (Bouwer Bosch) en Kevin (Bennie Fourie), wat al vir jare in ’n klerewassery werk.

Saans hou hulle partytjie in hul kliënte se klere.

By só ’n partytjie ontdek hulle ’n afgesnyde vinger wat aan ’n juweeldief behoort.

Die tweestuks word hierna in ’n onderwêreld ingesleep met ’n hele rits misdadigers en polisiebeamptes op hul spoor.

Die rolprent, wat op 8 Desember uitgereik word, spog met ’n rits bekendes in die SuidAfrikaanse vermaakbedryf, onder andere Bosch, Fourie, Nico Panagio, Louis Minnaar, Simone Nortmann en Leandie Du Randt Bosch.

Theron sê hy dink almal op stel het vroeg al gevoel hulle werk aan iets spesiaals.

Boonop het hulle goed saamgewerk.

“Ek, Bennie en Bouwer (Bosch) ken mekaar al van ons universiteitsdae af en ons verstaan mekaar se sin vir humor. So dit was hope pret om saam met hulle op stel te wees.”

Die hele rolverdeling het goed oor die weg gekom, vertel hy.

“Daar is lekker gekuier, gesels en grappies gemaak wanneer ons nie voor die kamera moes wees nie.”

Dit was ook nie enigste hoogtepunt vir hom nie.

“Daar is natuurlik ’n klein seuntjie binne my wat dit verskriklik baie geniet het om die aksietonele te verfilm!”

“The song made sense to me at that point in my life. It is a tribute to love and how easy it is to love somebody when you find the right person to give your heart to.”

Lucky Lucy shelter gets a lucky break A home energy solutions company, a radio station and Panorama Veterinary Clinic joined forces in a campaign to raise funds and supplies for the Lucky Lucy animal shelter on the N7.

The campaign started after a solar energy generation system was installed at the veterinary clinic, and a radio competition was announced on Bok Radio for listeners to try and guess how much money the vet would be saving on electricity.

“Our campaign, which ran until the end of October, invited social media users to guess the amount of money Panorama Veterinary Clinic would save on their electricity bill in the month of October as a result of their newly installed solar photovoltaic system,” says Cala van der Westhuizen, a spokesperson for Energy Partners Home Solutions (EPHS).

“Our client, Panorama Veterinary Clinic, not only provides top-tier service to their patients, but also to the animals of the Lucky Lucy Foundation. Seeing our client’s passion for this cause has also inspired us to make a difference in the lives of these animals.”

The campaign winner, Elsie Malan, guessed the closest to the correct amount in savings at the clinic: R4506.

Van der Westhuizen says that instead of taking her cash prize, Malan decided to donate the amount to the Lucky Lucy Foundation.

“This inspired everyone at EPHS so much that we decided to match her donation.

“We handed over the R9012 and two 12kg bags of dog food to Lucky Lucy at Panorama Veterinary Clinic on Friday 24 November.”

Van der Westhuizen says the company has now focused its efforts on driving food and cash donations for the Lucky Lucy Foundation.

“We want to encourage everyone to join us in helping to make the lives of Lucky Lucy’s animals better.”

Ring in the New Year at Ratanga Junction For those party animals wanting to bid 2017 farewell in style, perhaps a party at an iconic site is just the answer.

On 31 December thousands will descend on Ratanga Junction, the Cape’s largest fairground, to welcome in the New Year.

The New Year’s Eve bash will be hosted by local community radio station One FM 94.0 in partnership with the theme park and is in aid of charity. A portion of the funds

raised will be donated to the Blouberg Development Foundation, a non-profit organisation. Doors open at 20:00 and One FM DJs will play the best hits of the last two decades, from 1998 to 2017, says Ian Ward, station and programme manager.

Parklands College excels at World Robot Olympiad 2017

P

arklands College Preparatory Faculty’s Team BeastMode recently represented South Africa at the International World Robot Olympiad held in Costa Rica.

The team finished as the top South African team in the Elementary category, placing 38th out of 88 international finalists, says school spokesperson Ellie Clews. “These finalists were selected from 6962 teams from all over the world,” she says.

ty finished ninth overall out of 22 international finalists in the Advanced Robotics category. “These finalists were selected from a total of 375 teams from universities all over the world. The Advanced Robotics category is a tertiary-level category and for this reason we are very proud of the team’s achievements,” Clews adds.

Businesswoman shares success story: Hirsch’s recently hosted its last networking

Christmas cheer for children

ope House Counselling Centre is appealing to members of the public to support their effort to bring some Christmas cheer to children who have suffered trauma or abuse.

The non-profit organisation (NPO), which recently opened its doors in Table View, is currently collecting all kinds of goodies to bag and donate to the children.

The NGO says there are many families in Atlantis on the West Coast and Kalkfontein in Kuils River, which cannot afford to wake up to gifts on Christmas morning and that many children miss out on the joy of receiving something special of their own.

“This is why every year, Hope House ral-

lies the community to give 60 children, between the ages of one and six years, a party and their own wrapped gift,” says Judy Strickland, founder and director.

Hope House offers counselling services, play therapy, substance abuse intervention and prevention programmes to some of the most vulnerable children in the City.

Members of the public can help by donating soap, facecloths, cream, toothbrushes, toothpaste, T-shirts, toys, chips, juice boxes and sweets.

Kersvreugde vir Kaap met liedere DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

ie Walking Angels en die Walking Elves van Brackenfell se geliefde Kersliedere-sanggroepe is gereed om vanjaar weer eens Kersvreugde in Kapenaars se harte in te sing.

Hul eerste optrede vind op Vrydag 8 Desember by die Kenridge-winkelsentrum in Kenridge plaas, en op Kersdag 25 Desember sluit hulle die seisoen af by The Silo-hotel in die V & A Waterfront.

Die groepe het vanjaar in totaal 22 optredes waarmee beide groepe gaan poog om Die Burger-Kersfonds ’n hupstoot te gee.

“Ons het verlede jaar baie naby aan R20 000 gekom, en gaan vanjaar poog om dit te maak, maar kan dit ongelukkig nie doen sonder die hulp van die publiek nie,” sê die stigter, Riana van Wyk van Brackenfell.

Die groepe bestaan uit studente van die Riana van Wyk-musiekskool, wat elke jaar hul vakansies opoffer om in winkelsentrums in Kaapstad te loop en Kersliedjies te sing.

Van Wyk voeg by dat die projek ook nie moontlik sou wees sonder die ondersteuning van die verskeie winkelsentrums nie.

Hulle is Glengarry, Soneike, Kenridge, Aurora, N1 Stad, Sandown Retail Crossing, De Ville, Flamingo Square, Table View, Die Goue Akker, V & A Waterfront, Edgemead Village en Die Boord.

Die Walking Angels en die Walking Elves is die oorspronklike groep wat sedert 2000 al betrokke is met fondsinsameling vir Die Burger-Kersfonds en het deur die jare ’n instelling in veral die noordelike voorstede van Kaapstad geword.

Hulle word gekenmerk deur ’n plakkaat wat hulle by hulle dra met die embleem van Die Burger-Kersfonds daarop.

Van Wyk sê die groep sal ook altyd geklee wees in hul wit engelrokke of feetjie-uitrustings.

Die Walking Elves sal mense weer met hul Kersliedere by verskeie winkelsentrums in die Kaap vermaak.

“Die publiek is welkom om hul kleingeld in die Angels en Elves se Kerskouse te gooi en daarmee te help om minderbevoorregte kindertjies ’n beter toekoms te gee,” sê sy.

Die groep sal ook eersdaags te sien wees in ’n nuwe musiekvideo.

“Hulle is genader deur Fanie de Jager om in ’n musiekvideo te verskyn waarin hy ’n

duet saam met Steve Hofmeyr sing. Dit is ’n nuwe verwerking van die liedjie ‘So this is Christmas’ van Celine Dion, waarin die Walking Angels die agtergrondsang behartig.”

Lede van die groep het ook vanjaar elkeen ’n skoendoos vol lekkernye byderhand om deur die loop van hul optredes aan minderbevoorregte mense te oorhandig.

“Elke jaar kies ons ook ’n sentrum wat ons op 24 Desember besoek, waar ons nie bespreek is nie en gaan verras die werkers met geskenkies,” sê Van Wyk. Containers get creative

The committee members of the Durbanville Garden Club assisted in organising the event.

any weeks of working on their entries for the Creative Container Competition of the Durbanville Garden Club culminated in the awards ceremony on Saturday 18 November in the Durbanville Library.

The “Best in Show” prize winner was Angela Lidget-Nelson, a member of the Durbanville Garden Club, with her herbs and veggies entry.

Many budding young gardeners – some as young as four years old – also took part.

The winner of the under-12 category was seven-year-old Emma Nothnagel.

Barbara Smith, chairperson of the Durbanville Garden Club, says that all their hard work paid off, judging by the excitement and enthusiasm of those who took part and visited.

“We are looking forward to a much bigger competition next year,” she says.

Fantastic prizes to the value of more than R6000 were donated by several local businesses.

The judges were Christine Faulhammer from Super Plants in Tokai and Pietman Diener from Rustenburg Gardens in Stellenbosch.

V The Durbanville Garden Club meets every second Wednesday from 19:30 at the Durbanville Library.

This entry was awarded first prize in the category “Anything Goes”.

All the children who took part received chocolates as a reward for their participation.

Bellville nog voorbok op krieketleer

Laaste gradering: Francois du Plessis se Goju­Kai­karateskool se laaste gradering van die jaar het onlangs plaasgevind. Meer as 180 karatekas van die Paarl, Strand en Stellenbosch, asook die noordelike voorstede, het gegradeer. Grade­ ringseksamen vanaf 9de kyu (rooi streep) tot 1ste kyu (bruingordel) het plaasgevind. Diane de Kock (Sempai), Louie Schultz (Sempai), Francois du Plessis (Shihan) en Tredoux Ngrini (Sempai) was aan die stuur van die gradering.

Vierde agtereenvolgende oorwinning die afgelope naweek laat Durbanville breëbors agteroor sit met die verstewiging van sy plek bo-aan die punteleer in die Premierliga van die WP se tweedaagse klubkrieketkompetisie.

Terwyl Bellville, die Universiteit WesKaapland en Milnerton ook almal aan die wenkant was in die jongste reeks wedstryde, was dit die Durbies se blitsige afranseling van Langa wat die krieketlui laat wonder of hulle hierdie seisoen weer as die WP-kampioen gekroon gaan word.

Afgesien van knap boulwerk deur veral Roubi Kapp (7/56 in die wedstryd) – wat Langa net 107 en 87 kon laat aanteken, was dit die onoorwonne vierdepaaltjie-vennootskap van 234 lopies tussen Hayes van den Berg (123*) en Byron Boshoff (108*) wat die besoekers laat steier het.

Durbanville (293/3, gesl.) het ’n beurtoorwinning behaal.

Bellville bly met ’n derde oorwinning in vier wedstryde ook onder die voorbokke op die punteleer.

Nadat Bellville Saterdag ’n eerstebeurtvoorsprong van 84 lopies teen Brackenfell behaal het, het hy Sondag met sy 67/1 ’n sege met 9 paaltjies oor die Brakke (148) beklink.

Dit was aanvanklik ’n aanvangsvennootskap van 112 lopies tussen Wikus van Vuuren (93) en Wian Engelbrecht (53) wat Bellville (269/7, gesl.) ’n houvas besorg het.

Daarna het Simphiwe Yiba (5/33) die afrondingswerk in die besoekers se tweede beurt gedoen.

Mark Andrionatos (64) was Brackenfell se beste kolwer.

avid Barnet en Tjaart Oosthuizen staan bekend as die “Legendes van die See” en is oorgehaal om op Nuwejaarsdag vir die twaalfde jaar as wenners van die uitmergelende Jumtree Trans Agulhas-rubberbootresies uit die stryd te tree.

Vanjaar is die 30ste keer wat die wêreld se moeilikste opblaasbootuitdaging tussen Plettenbergbaai en Vishoek van 28 Desember tot 1 Januarie beslis word.

Tjaart (Welgemoed) en David (Blouberg) is al vir 15 jaar spanmaats, wat ’n rekord is in dié kompetisie.

“Ek is al 19 jaar betrokke in die sport. Ek het betrokke geraak in 1998

toe ek as backup op ’n Trans Agulhas gegaan het saam met vriende wat deelgeneem het om meer te leer oor die sport. Ek het onmiddellik belanggestel en die volgende jaar deelgeneem aan my eerste Trans Agulhas.

“My en David se paadjies het in 2002 gekruis toe ons kragte saamgesnoer en ons eie span begin het. In daardie selfde jaar is ons gekroon as die Suid-Afrikaanse nasionale kampioene, sowel as kampioene van die Westelike Provinsie, Trans Atlantic en Trans Agulhas,” vertel Tjaart.

Voorbereiding duur die hele jaar wat gimnasiumwerk insluit en baie tyd op die see in verskillende weersomstandighede.

“Ons oefen deurgaans deur die jaar

in die gimnasium met kardiovaskulêre- en kragoefeninge. Ons spandeer ook baie tyd op die see in verskillende weers- en see-omstandighede aangesien die Trans Agulhas ’n verskeidenheid van weerpatrone mag inhou.

“Dit is baie veeleisend, alhoewel ons glo 90% van die bydrae tot ons sukses lê in ons voorbereiding – fisiek sowel as geestelik. Die adrenalienafskeiding help ’n mens gelukkig om die onmiddellike fisieke pyne van die resies te oorkom.

“Sowat drie maande voor die resies verskerp ons alle oefeninge. Kommunikasie en beplanning tussen ons as spanmaats is van kardinale belang en ons glo dit is ook grotendeels die rede vir ons sukses in die sport,” sê Tjaart.

Danone is doing good things for kids’ soccer Registration for the 2018 edition of the world’s largest soccer tournament for kids between 10 and 12 years is now open.

Schools across the country are invited to become part of the Danone Nations Cup, which touches the lives of over two million people annually.

Next year will mark the 19th edition of the tournament, which is the brainchild of Danone, the world’s biggest producer of dairy products.

South Africa has been participating in the tournament since its inception and has won the world title three times: in 2003, 2007 and 2009.

The tournament is run in partnership with the South African Schools Football Association (SASFA) and it comprises games beginning at cluster level, with winning schools progressing to regional and then provincial levels, culminating in the national finals where the national champion team that will represent the country at the Danone Nations Cup world finals is identified.

Last year, over 2700 schools registered to play in the initial rounds of the tournament, which was the highest number of schools to have registered in the history of the tournament in this country.

In 2017, for the first time, schools belonging to the Johannesburg Primary Schools

Football Association joined the tournament.

They hosted their own final, with Reddam House from Bedfordview beating King David from Sandton and going on to compete in the Gauteng provincial finals. The number of schools from the association is expected to grow substantially in 2018.

Among the schools expected to be the first to enter are Benny’s Sports Development and Academy from Limpopo (2016 national champions) and the defending champions, Mophela Primary School from KwaZulu-Natal. The former school, under coach Mbishi Mokwena, has already started preparing their team.

The basis on which the competing nations decide on their champion team differs from country to country. In South Africa it is an inter-school competition. Other countries send their top club youth sides or academy teams, whilst others select regional or even national teams at u.12 level.

The Danone Nations Cup is built on the fundamental principles of participation, friendship, accessibility and fair play.

The eventual 2018 South African national champion team will be participating in the Danone Nations Cup world finals at a venue still to be decided.
