3, 2, 1 ... liftoff!

You are never too young or too old to learn about space and its infinite mysteries, and that is exactly what a group of young deserving children from various children’s homes did recently when they visited Canal Walk’s Space Station. The visit on Wednesday 10 January was made possible thanks to the shopping centre’s Charity Day, which saw kids from Reach For a Dream, Nehemiah Safe House, Thandanani, Home from Home and TLC enjoy an intergalactic experience. Here little Mikhail Braaf (4) from Thandanani enjoys the ball pit at the superga lactic space station, which also included a huge inflatable space maze.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: ONLY A HANDFUL OF CASES ARE REPORTED TO THE POLICE

Break the silence RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

“D

omestic violence is a very serious issue that occurs frequently, but unfortunately only a handful of cases are reported – those cases we do see are only the tip of the iceberg.” This is the response by Judy Strickland, founder of Hope House Counselling Centre, regarding the seriousness of domestic violence after the South African Police Service (SAPS) recently issued a statement in which they urge the public to speak out against this crime.

Strickland says that because so many of the cases go unreported, staff at the centre often do not see the true extent of victim numbers. “We encourage victims to seek help if they are subjected to domestic violence,” says Strickland, who is also director at Hope House, a non-profit organisation that provides donation-based individual, child and family trauma counselling to the community. Her call was echoed by the police earlier this month when they encouraged people to report such cases when they occur. Victims of such crimes have the right to lay a crimi-

nal charge and also have the right to apply for a protection order at their nearest magistrate’s court, the police say. Dorothea Gertse, head social worker and shelter manager at the Saartjie Baartman Centre (SBC) in Manenberg, says that when doing so, it is important that victims are supported – throughout the criminal proceedings, as well as during the recovery process. “Organisations exist that will assist with these processes, including the Saartjie Baartman Centre,” Gertse says. The SBC is a one-stop centre for women and children who have experienced abuse. V To page 2.
