DAY ZERO: EMERGENCY PLANS MADE FOR THOSE UNABLE TO QUEUE FOR WATER

T’view tackles Day Zero RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

E

mergency plans are currently being set up in Table View to ease the effects of Day Zero. Day Zero, the day residents will have to start queuing for water as a result of the current water shortage being experienced in Cape Town, has been moved to 11 May, the municipal authorities announced recently. In light of the water crisis, a communitybased organisation decided to start setting

up emergency plans in Table View. The initial plan entails making the process for those who are unable to queue for water, but rather need their water delivered to them, a bit easier by means of assisting such individuals. It also aims to assist those who are unable to travel or carry their water containers. The Table View Ratepayers’ Association issued a poster on Facebook recently, stating that people who have “justifiable reasons” as to why they cannot queue for water should contact the organisation. Asked what exactly constitutes justifiable

reasons, Mandy da Matta (TVRA chairperson) explains: “These are people who have medical reasons, older people and those who do not have the ability to pick up any kind of weight. “Also people who do not have transport. This is a crucial one, because how do you expect an indigent person to pay for a taxi or a bus? You have to look at it from its merits. I don’t think working a full day is a justifiable reason – we all work and all have to make a plan.” Notice of the so-called Day Zero Water

Plan being set up has already been distributed to all of the ratepayers’ association and street committee members. “[The news] must get out as far and quickly as possible so that we can start formulating a plan of action.” A series of community meetings will also be held towards the end of the month and in early March to discuss the plans with residents and to get more suggestions from them as to how else the effects of Day Zero can be averted.
