House robbers are becoming increasingly brazen and violent when targeting homes with not even security complexes and electrified fencing offering any safety.

Eight people including two children (two and three years old) were injured when the VW kombi they were travelling in overturned and crashed into a cellphone mast on the corner of Sandown and Rochester Roads in West Beach on Saturday night at around 22:00. The driver of the vehicle was on his way to pick up his brother from a nearby restaurant when the accident happened. Police confirmed that they arrested the driver for driving under the influence and reckless and negligent driving. Emergency personnel on site where doubtful whether the two­year­old child whose condition was critical at that stage would survive.

Yesterday police could not confirm the child’s current condition. The other occupants were treated for a variety of injuries ranging from a broken leg to head injuries.

In the early hours of Monday morning last week an elderly couple (73 and 76) were asleep in their Melkbosstrand home when they awoke and were confronted by three men in their bedroom.

The men were armed with a firearm. The couple was tied up and the men fled with cellphones, a laptop and wallet.

Later that same morning members of the Milnerton police responded to a house robbery at The Cranes residential complex in Century View, Century City at 05:00.

Three men armed with knives broke into one of the ground floor units.

The nurse charged with caring for the sickly homeowner of the unit, managed to lock herself in the bathroom. “When everything became quite she came out of the bathroom and phoned the police,” Warrant Officer Daphne Dell of the Milnerton police said.

The suspects fled the scene with her handbag and laptop.

After investigating the scene police found a crate positioned next to the boundary wall of the complex and a cushion draped over the electric fencing.

“The complex security reported the alarm going off at around 03:00 that morning. We think the suspects scouted the units looking for an opportunity to break in. The nurse opened a bathroom window shortly after waking up,” Dell said.

The following day an elderly woman was shot in the arm when she awoke to an intruder towering over her bed.

The incident happened at a house in Humewood Drive, Parklands at 08:30.

The 65-year-old victim’s daughter who was also asleep woke to the sound of the shot. As she raced out of her bedroom she found a second suspect in the house. Her brother who was working in the garden also raced inside. The robbers fled with cellphones, a laptop and wallets in a Nissan Tiida.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment to the gunshot wound in her right arm.

Dell’s says it appears that criminals now prefer to break into homes when the residents are home.

“It makes it easier to gain access to things like safes where firearms are mostly kept,” she said.

New MyCiTi buses produced locally The MyCiTi bus service is helping to boost local industry and create jobs, as the first buses for the upcoming central city services roll off the production line at the Busmark factory in Epping.

Die derde finalis in dié kategorie was ’n artikel van Vukile Sonandzi, redakteur van City Vision, susterskoerant van TygerBurger.

Die toekenningsgeleentheid is by die One & Only-hotel in die V&A Waterfront gehou.

Tydens die geleentheid het Chris Moerdyk, hoofbeoordelaar en ’n media- en bemarkings-

goeroe, gesê vanjaar was die meer as honderd inskrywings almal van hoogstaande gehalte.

Mike Mabasa, Brandhouse se korporatiewe verhoudingsbestuurder, het gesê dat daar geen probleem met alkoholgebruik is nie, maar wel met alkoholmisbruik. “By Brandhouse neem ons kennis van die verskeie kwessies wat met alkohol gepaard gaan. Ons is te alle tye toegewyd aan die bevordering van verantwoordelike alkoholgebruik. Die beste manier om dit te doen, is om ’n vennoot te hê wat die mag en invloed het om dinge te verander – en dit is die media,” het hy gesê. Hy het alle joernaliste wat ingeskryf het, aangemoedig om die harde werk om die boodskap oor verantwoordelike alkoholgebruik uit te dra, voort te sit.

Kim Cloete van Carte Blanche, is as die joernalis van die jaar aangewys vir haar bydrae oor fetale alkoholsindroom (FAS) einde verlede jaar.

Busmark 2000 won the R660 million tender to produce the first 190 nine-metre buses that will be needed for the upcoming MyCiTi services. The company started kitting out its new factory just two months ago, and work is progressing fast.

“The first buses have just been finished and 30 will be produced by the end of June.

Approximately 20 more will be finished each month thereafter until all the buses are available,” said Malcolm Wilken, general manager of Busmark Western Cape.

“We are extremely pleased that a local company won this contract. They are producing buses of an outstanding quality. We believe this is the beginning of this industry, as many such buses will be needed as Bus Rapid Transport systems expand in cities across South Africa,” said mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater, Brett Herron.

“The buses are Optare Solos, assembled from kits that are imported from Leeds in the UK, as they are not available locally.

About 80 workers are currently employed at the Epping factory and the number will rise to 120 next month, when production is in full swing,” Wilken said.

“Busmark is sourcing tyres, batteries, windscreens, paint, seats and as many oth-

er parts as possible from local suppliers, indirectly boosting other local businesses.

We believe we could export components back to the UK, if we can have them produced at competitive prices here. When the UK company had some supply problems recently, they sourced parts from South Africa,” Wilken added.

Busmark is based in Randfontein, and set up the Elsies River factory when it was awarded the MyCiTi contract. Now there are rows of buses, in various stages of completion, along the factory floor. Spraypainters, mechanics, body shapers and welders are hard at work.

The Optare Solos are considerably smaller than the MyCiTi buses currently in use, and better able to navigate the roads and corners in residential areas.

They are low-floor vehicles with boarding bridges and no steps, to create level boarding at pavement level, allowing the disabled, elderly and others with limited mobility to use the service.

They have air suspension, like the MyCiTi buses currently in service, and meet stringent Euro 5 emission standards.

Busmark’s other clients include Golden Arrow Bus Service, eThekwini municipality, the Tanzanian government and the Maputo municipality. It also produced the feeder buses for the Gautrain service.

“As a company, we’re particularly proud to be associated with MyCiTi because if you look at BRT services in South Africa, this is the flagship,” Wilken said.

Police invite all residents The Melkbostrand Police invites all local residents to a public meeting (imbizo) which will take place at the Dutch Reformed Church, 11th Avenue, Melkbosstrand on 20 June at 19:00.

‘Attacker probably won’t be found’ LEON STEENKAMP

A young woman from Parklands is doubtful that the man who viciously attacked her a month ago will be brought to book.

Mary-Ann Mowatt (19) was on her way to her friend’s home in Sunningdale on 3 May at 16:00 when she was attacked by a young man dressed in a school uniform.

“I was coming from town on the MyCiTi bus and got off at the Link Road Station,” says the petite brunette.

Walking through a greenbelt with an adjacent water canal she sensed something might be wrong.

“I had my earphones in my ears and something told me to look around. I saw him walking behind me (about 20m back),” She didn’t think too much of it but seconds later as she crossed the embankment she felt a push.

“I fell forward and split my head open on the concrete. I fell face down. It all happened so quickly,” she says.

As she struggled to turn herself around in the knee-deep water in the canal her attacker pounced.

“He was on top of me as I managed to turn on my back. My body was completely underwater and his hands were around my neck, pushing my head under the water. My face was completely under water,” she says as she calmly recalls the incident.

The thought of having to die in such a way, infuriated her and she feverishly started scratching at her attacker’s face.

“This didn’t seem to make a difference so I felt down his body to his man unit and just pulled as hard as I could. I felt his grip loosen and I managed to push him off me.”

Her assailant fell on his back on the opposite embankment and pulled Mowatt on top of him.

“I tried to reason, shouting that I am homeless, from Malmesbury and have nothing.

That is when he said he wanted sex.”

When she refused his request he told her he was going to kill her.

Moments later he told her to run.

“I ran up the embankment to the other side of the canal to my friend Jason’s house. I first thought it was the rain running down my face but then realised it was blood from the cut above my eye,” she says.

Mowatt has identified her attacker as a tall, lanky, coloured young man wearing a school blazer from Milnerton High School.

She went to the school a day after the attack hoping to identify her attacker from school pictures, but to no avail.

The school’s principal Paul Besener says they also checked their pupils for facial scratch marks during an assembly but found nothing. “I would love to know if it was one of our learners so that I could expel him, as this is unacceptable,” Besener said adding that only three of the school’s learners live in the Sunningdale area.

Cops need to ID deceased The police need help in identifying a man who died following a traffic accident in Blaauwberg Road last week.

The man was crossing the road at the traffic light intersection of Blaauwberg Road and Boy de Goede Circle on Monday evening at 20:00 when he was struck by a car.

The man died on the scene as a result of his injuries. He is an African male, approximately 30 years old and was dressed in a blue jeans and dark blue top.

“The deceased has not been identified yet

and we ask the assistance of the public to report any relative or friend that fits the description of the deceased and who went missing since Monday 28 May,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant Elizabeth Munro.

Pedestrians are urged to take extra care when crossing this part of Blaauwberg Road as this section of road has been without street lights for the last couple of months due to construction work on MyCiTi bus lanes.

Followed from bank, robbed LEON STEENKAMP

A business in Montague Gardens is seriously out of pocket after a bank-followed robbery. Two employers from a promotions company were robbed of R80 000 in small change at their offices in Beacon Park on last Tuesday at 11:00.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Daphne Dell, the two men had returned from the Absa Bank in John Montague Square when the incident happened.

“They wanted to deposit the money at the bank but had to return to the office after in-

correct paperwork prevented the transaction from taking place,” Dell said.

Moments after returning from the bank three men armed with a firearm entered the business premises and threatened them.

“The men took the money and fled in a silver coloured car,” Dell said.

Police have in the recent past had regular reports of such incidents from customers who returned from this specific branch.

“We have discussed the problem with the bank and the centre security which led to these incidents decreasing lately,” Dell said.

Police warned the public to always be alert when making trips to the bank.

Dancers ready for ultimate finals choose the winning couple as well as the first and second runners-up.

The winning couple has been invited to perform a dance demonstration at the South African Dance Foundation regional championships, which will take place on 16 June at the Italian Club in Rugby.

“All finalist couples from the schools in the northern suburbs have been offered to join the two month training programme for the Artscape School Art Festival,” says competition organiser Marina Milanovic.

“The Artscape Festival gives our young dancers an opportunity to experience a real and proper stage performance.”

The festival is held in August every year.

The finalists of the dance challenge are invited to join the studio’s teenage members group who also take part in the festival.

A cute kitten from Melkbosstrand is one of the winners in this year’s Cape of Good Hope SPCA Royal Canin Mutt and Meow of the Year competition.

Hundreds of cats and dogs were entered into the online pet competition where the public was asked to vote by making a donation to the SPCA. Crunchie-Braveheart, owned

by Gill Cornick won third place in the Meow of the Year category.

The now six-month-old cat had some travelling to do before it could call the peaceful coastal town her home.

“A colleague was horse-riding in a field in Johannesburg in November last year when she heard a ‘meow-like’ sound. Upon investigation she found the cutest, teeniest little kitten which was possibly about two or three weeks old, but had been bitten by something,” Cornick says.

Her colleague took the cat home and had a vet treat his wounds.

She could however not keep the cat as her older cats would not tolerate another feline addition to the family.

“As fate would have it my husband who was visiting our

branch in Johannesburg at the time, saw the kitten and fell instantly in love. He drove 1 400km back to Cape Town with this little kitty because the airline wouldn’t allow the kitten to fly.”

Their colleague named the white and ginger ball of fluff Braveheart.

“We have since named him Crunchie as he crunches up everything in sight. CrunchieBraveheart had to visit the vet once (and sometimes twice) a week for the first two months as he had many problems, but thankfully, he’s now well and has just been neutered,” Cornick says adding that the sevenmonth-old kitten has quickly made friends with their border collie and adopting their golden retriever as a surrogate mother.

“He sometimes thinks he’s also a dog. Crunchie-Braveheart loves joining in with ball games and other doggy activities. My older cats are not yet in love with him, but they accept him,” she says.

The Meow of the Year was awarded to Rabs, a snow-white cat who went in search of a new family after she took a dislike to her first owner’s dog.

“Rabs climbed our loquat tree into our bedroom where my husband was lying, already very ill with early onset Alzhe-

imer’s. For the next two years she provided him with muchneeded support,” Rab’s owner Carole Rossouw from Tamboerskloof wrote in her entry.

The Mutt of the Year award went to Bear, a caramel-coloured rescued dog who has provincial colours in dog agility.

“Since the day Bear was adopted from the CoGH SPCA in 2002 as a three-month-old puppy, she has been the life and joy of our family,” says her overjoyed owner, Lee-Anne Curtis-Cox from Welgemoed.

The competition, which ran over six weeks from 10 April to 21 May raised nearly R20 000 for homeless pets currently being cared for by the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. The winner of the Top Fundraiser’s category is four-yearold Yorkie-cross Luni, whose owner Susan van Niekerk raised R2 000 for the organisation by encouraging friends and family to vote for her pet in the form of donations.

“The response was great and we’ve been so touched by the heart-warming stories shared by so many pet owners, young and old, and grateful to the dozens of people who have voted for them and donated to the SPCA,” said Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA communication and resource development manager, Sarah Scarth.

MyCiTi fares set to increase on 1 July

The team of the Blouberg Beach Cleanup recently had their 15th beach cleanup on 26 May at Holbaai. The weather was great and there was a good turnout of people who helped to collect over 200 kg of rubbish off the beach. Organiser Gregory Player thanks everyone who participated and without whom the cleanups would be impossible. The next cleanup operation will be at Forata Drive, Sunset Beach on Sunday 10 June from 09:00 to 12:00.

The City of Cape Town wishes to alert all MyCiTi passengers that fares on the bus service will go up on 1 July, with a six percent increase for the commuter routes.

The increases are among the annual service tariff increases levied by the city at the start of each new financial year, all of which are described in the city’s draft budget.

The tariff for a trip on the trunk service between the Civic Centre and Table View will increase from R10 to R10,60 when the new fares kick in on 1 July, and the fare for a trip on the feeder service will rise

from R5 to R5,30.

The airport service tariff will increase from R53 to R57 for adults and R26 to R28,10 for children. The cost of a monthly ticket for the airport service will rise from R424 to R449,50, and the cost of issuing a myconnect card will increase from R22 to R23. MyCiTi fares are exempt from VAT. “We are confident that the increases are reasonable and that the MyCiTi service remains very competitively priced,” said mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater, Brett Herron.

On Friday 19 May the Grade 11 learners of Parklands College spent the day making a difference. Learners were engaged in a variety of activities including making sandwi­ ches for the hungry and homeless, fundraising for organisations such as the Cart Horse Associ­ ation, spending time with residents of local old age homes, volunteering at homes for socially, mentally and physically disadvantaged individuals and cleaning up litter on beaches. American school’s chamber orchestra visits Cape Town The Groton Chamber Orchestra of America will be performing at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parow along with their hosts, Durbanville High School and the Hugo Lambrechts Concert Wind Ensemble, on Wednesday 20 June.

The concert will start at 19:00.

This is the first tour of this orchestra to Africa, its third international concert tour.

In 2006 the orchestra toured Switzerland and in 2009 the tour performed in cities and small rural villages in China.

The orchestra of the Groton School in Groton, Massachusetts, is led by director of instrumental music, Mary Ann Lanier,

and conducted by conductor, cellist, and flautist Timothy Terranella.

Groton School is recognised as one of America’s top boarding schools. All members study privately with one of 25 music faculty members and are active performers in the school’s student recital series.

The orchestra rehearses three times a week for a year-long course in the school’s curriculum and presents seven community performances during the year.

‘Prins Harry’ kan meer as net kook JANA BEKKER

Op die Kêrels wat Kook-vraelys wat JanFrancois van Zyl van Boston moes invul oor wat presies hy in sy droomvrou soek, het hy maar onvolledig geantwoord.

Oor die program mag hy nie veel uitlap nie. Op die dag van die afspraak het JanFrancois twee ure gehad om die ete voor te berei. Sy kookvernuf het hy ook te danke aan die feit dat hy direk na skool ver weg van sy ouerhuis gewoon het. “Ek het maar geleer deur te eksperimenteer,” sê hy. Oor sy ervaring voor die kameras, sê hy: “Dit het baie warm geraak onder die ligte en die kamera is die heeltyd op jou!”

Jan-Francois was meer as ’n jaar gelede laas in ’n verhouding, maar hy sê dit is moeilik om eienskappe van wat hy in ’n vrou soek te lys. “Ek weet instinktiewelik as ek belangstel of nie, maar wat belangrik is, is ’n humorsin, ’n spontane meisie wat nie bang is om iets saam met jou te doen nie.” ’n Meisie wat net by die huis wil bly en fliek kyk, is nie vir hom nie. “Ek hou van stap, kuier, braai, die see en wyn proe. Dit is min dat jy my oor ’n naweek by die huis sal kry,” vertel hy. Sy entoesiasme en passie vir die lewe borrel oor en dit is duidelik: dié kêrel kan baie meer as net kook!

Die rede hiervoor is “omdat ek nie desperaat was om ’n meisie te kry nie, dit het vir my gegaan oor die kook-deel van die program.”

Jan-Francois (24) is ’n finalejaarstudent in konstruksiebestuur, wat besluit het om in te skryf vir dié realiteitsreeks op kykNET na sy pa, Jacques, hom van die reeks vertel het.

Aanvanklik het Jan-Francois nie eens besef daar gaan meisies in die program wees nie. “My pa het gevra of ek sou belangstel in ’n kook-show,” vertel hy.

“Ek is nie ’n ou wat nee sê vir goed nie.

Ek hou van nuwe dinge,” sê hy.

Eers op die vorm wat hy moes invul het hy gesien daar was vrae oor eienskappe wat hy in ’n vrou soek en dit is híér waar JanFrancois maar baie onvolledig geantwoord het.

Die episode waarin Jan-Francois verskyn is verlede Donderdag uitgesaai. Hy het die resepte vir die geregte wat hy voorberei het, self uitgedink.

Hoewel hy vooraf nogal senuweeagtig was, sê JanFrancois hy het gemaklik geraak die oomblik toe sy afspraak, Andriëtte, opdaag.

“Sy is ’n oulike meisie en ons het dadelik gekliek,” sê hy. ’n Vriendin van JanFrancois, Amieke Janse van Rensburg, het hom op die dag gehelp met die dek van die tafel en die dekor.

“Eers met die ete het ek besef Amieke het vergeet om ’n mes te dek,” vertel JanFrancois laggend. Nóg ’n oomblik wat hy sal onthou is hoe hy gesukkel het om ’n skinkbord te dra. “Ek is linkshandig en nie ’n baie goeie kelner nie,” vertel hy laggend.

Dié kêrel het op ’n jong ouderdom begin kook en dié passie is iets wat natuurlik kom.

Mense vergelyk sy voorkoms met die van die koninklike prins Harry.

“Toe ek jonger was het ek baie meer na hom gelyk, maar mense sê dit steeds vir my,” sê hy. “Dit is ’n goeie conversation starter, lag hy.

Kids perform for the seniors The Durbanville Children’s Home is presenting a concert on Saturday 16 June at 10:00 in the community hall of the Durbanville Dutch Reformed Church in Weyers Avenue, Durbanville.

All senior citizens of 55 years and older are invited to come and share in the talents of the children.

Seeking cute pups’ mum LEON STEENKAMP

An animal charity is looking for the owner of a dog whose pups were abandoned in Parow recently.

Adopt-a-pet were called after five puppies were found on the doorstep of a church in Wicht Road, Parow.

“The dogs were found on a plastic sheet in front of the church and one of the neighbours called us,” said Adopt-a-pet’s Cicely Blumberg.

The dogs all suffered from mange and coccidiosis and one of the litter was placed on

a drip.

“The pup did unfortunately not make it, but one of them was adopted by the vet that treated them,” she said.

The remaining three dogs are at the Adopt-apet kennels in Milnerton and are well on their way to recovery, Blumberg added.

“We want to appeal to the owner of the mother to contact us so that we can sterilise the dog to prevent any further litters,” she said adding that there will be no retribution.

Hoe veilig is veilig?

ADT and the police did a sterling job On 24 May at 12:30 in the afternoon I received a telephone call from ADT security to inform me that the alarm at my home had been set off and that they were responding.

It took me minutes to reach home, at the same time two ADT vehicles arrived. I could see immediately that my home had been broken into and ADT did a search of the house and property. The officers then commenced with a search of the nearby streets and apprehended two suspects who were immediately arrested by the police who

were also on the scene. All items in their possession were taken to the police station, where I later identified my stolen property.

This happened in broad daylight in a quiet road in Table View, and was quite traumatic for my family.

I would like to thank ADT for their quick response to the alarm and to extend a heartfelt thanks to both Mr Daniels and Mr Sizwe Matomane, the responding officers. They were very professional and performed excellently in catching the thieves.

I would also like to extend a warm thank you to Constables Nel and Myataza, the police officers who assisted at the scene.

They made my wife and I feel a lot safer and dealt with the situation in a calming and professional manner. To constable Blake, the other investigating officers and all the people who we don’t see, but in one way or another are working hard to keep our streets and homes safe, thank you.

Christopher Venter of Tygerhof has never tasted a Guinness beer in his life. It is an experience he wants to savour for the very first time in the heartland of this iconic brew – Dublin, Ireland.

“Instead of just doing the trip solely for the adventure of it I wanted to use it to promote a greater cause.

My daughter Blaze underwent a life saving heart operation at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in 1994 shortly after being born and I always felt that I owed them something. If I had a million rand I would have given it to them, but as that was never within my financial means I decided to use this trip to create awareness about the hospital,” Venter explains.

The trip dubbed The Greater Trek saw Venter and close friend Hein Gerber complete 9 500km on their Vespa scooters.

They travelled from the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town to Alexander Bay (most western point), then to Pontdrif in Limpopo, on to Kosi Bay along the east coast and finally finishing at Cape Agulhas the most southern point of Africa.

City announces date for general valuation The next date of the general valuation of all properties in the City of Cape Town will be 1 July.

This was announced at a council meeting last week. The general valuation roll prepared will be implemented on 1 July next year.

The city levies property rates based on a valuation roll. The current valuation roll has a date of property valuation of 1 July 2009.

In terms of legislation, a valuation roll takes effect from the start of the financial year following completion of the public inspection period and remains valid for that financial year or for one or more subsequent financial years as the municipality may decide, but in total not for more than four financial years.

The city has implemented two general valuations since 2000.

“We consider it wise to conduct regular valuations as long periods between valuations result in significant overnight shifts in rates,” said Ian Neilson, executive deputy

mayor and mayoral committee member for finance of the City of Cape Town.

“The investment that the city has made since the year 2000 in valuation systems, data collection and modelling expertise is now paying off in terms of a lower objection rate and a faster resolution of objections,” he said.

“Most objections of the last general valuation roll were resolved within a year of tabling. In accordance with the mass appraisal principles used by the city, the size, sales figures and physical attributes of properties will be taken into account when determining the rateable value of a property,” Neilson said.

The final valuation roll will be certified by the municipal valuer and submitted to the city manager on 31 January next year. The roll will then be open for inspection and the lodging of objections during March and April 2013.

Notices will be posted to property owners in February 2013 to advise them of their valuation and of the procedure for objections.

TED comes to Cape Town The first TEDxCapeTownED event will take place at the Ratanga Junction MegaVu venue near Canal Walk on 16 June (Youth Day).

This is the day which honours the deaths of hundreds of Soweto school children who protested against Bantu education in 1976.

TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) is a global non-profit organisation dedicated to the mission of “ideas worth spreading”. The “x” in TEDxCapeTownED means it is an independently organised event, licensed by TED, and “ED” means educators who each will be conveying ideas in less than 12 minutes.

A group of experienced professionals passionate about transforming South Africa through education have organised the event

Some of the educators who will share their ideas are Dr Mamphela Ramphele (activist, author, academic, businesswoman and medical doctor), Prof Tim Noakes (UCT professor of Sports Science), Soli Philander (seasoned broadcaster, award-winning actor, television presenter, director, comedian, playwright, columnist and motivational speaker), and Brent van Rensburg (founder and CEO of the Zip Zap Circus School).

Thick cucumber slices or cucumber fingers work particularly well with this dip. You can also serve it with grilled fish or cold meats such as pastrami or smoked chicken. 1 medium or large avocado pear 10 ml (2 tsp) fresh lemon juice 5 ml - 10 ml (1 tsp - 2 tsp) finely grated lemon rind 10 ml (2 tsp) olive oil 125 ml (½ cup) crumbled feta cheese (ordinary feta or creamy Danish feta) 20 ml (4 tsp) finely chopped red or white onion 5 - 6 baby Rosa tomatoes, chopped milled black pepper to taste Using a wooden spoon, coarsely mash the avocado with the lemon juice, lemon rind and olive oil. Add the feta cheese, onion and tomatoes and, still using the wooden spoon, gently mix everything together. Remember, the dip should remain chunky! Season with black pepper – feta cheese is salty, so no salt needed for this dip.

Spoon the dip into a bowl, garnish with a grind of black pepper or extra chopped tomato. Place bowl in the centre of a platter and arrange your choice of dippers around it.

Makes about 250 ml/1 cup.

Making history of V&A come to life South Africa’s V&A Waterfront is considered an elite shopping destination but few South Africans know that it is also the oldest working harbour in South Africa, home to 22 cultural landmarks and the ruins of an original Dutch fort built in 1714.

Underprivileged children in Du Noon and Joe Slovo are keeping warm this winter thanks to Doodles Restaurant who hosted a customer appreciation day in March. Restaurant patrons were asked to sponsor rain jackets for the children who are currently part of the Keep a Child in School programme. The drive saw more than 100 jackets being donated. The Keep a Child in School programme is run by Boost Africa Founda­ tion and focuses on the communities of Du Noon and Joe Slovo. The aim of the programme is to provide school uniforms, school stationery and even emergency food parcels for child­ ren who cannot afford it and therefore might miss the chance to go to school. “We want to ensure that children can attend school with pride and dignity. Many children are kept from school because their mother or guardian cannot afford a uniform. A school uniform and adequate stationery is our goal for each child in the programme. Being able to give them a rain jacket to keep them warm is a real blessing,” said Mary Mytting Dell, director of the Boost Africa Foundation. She thanked Doodles and its customers for their kind effort.

Guided historical walking tours are now being offered to educate the public about the Waterfront’s history.

On International Museum Day (18 May), pupils from Nolugile Primary School in Khayelitsha were in for a treat when they travelled back in time during a V&A Historical Walking Tour guided by “Jan van Riebeeck”. Tour guides in period dress enthusiastically told the story of Cape Town’s rich history and showed the pupils some of the historic points such as the Clock Tower, the Robinson Dry Dock (one of the oldest of its kind in the world and still used today), the SAS Somerset (the only boom defence vessel remaining in the world), and Cape Town’s first power station to name a few. They were also shown a glimpse of what life may have been like in the Cape during the 1700s when they explored the museum which showcases the ruins of the Fort built in 1714 that was buried for 180 years.

“It’s all about how you tell the story; that is the key to making history exciting and interesting,” says Willem Steenkamp, renowned historian, author and brainchild behind the V&A Historical Walking Tour and curator of the Chavonnes Battery Museum.

The historical tour operates in partnership with the Chavonnes Battery Museum,

which is managed by a BEE, women-owned company on behalf of Nedbank/BOE. “The museum and walking tour allows visitors to experience the history of the Cape from before 1600 to the present. When information is presented in an exciting manner, people remember what they have learnt, become interested in the rich history of the harbour and understand its contribution to the development of Cape Town,” says Dale Dodgen, business executive at the helm of the organisation.

Peninsula Beverage Company (PenBev), the local bottler of The Coca-Cola Company’s products in the Western and Northern Cape, through its partnership with the V&A Waterfront and the “Partners in Education Project” has recently formed synergies with the Chavonnes Battery Museum and the V&A Historical Walking Tour. This pilot project sponsors pupils from disadvantaged areas with the opportunity to visit the museum and to take part in the tours so they can learn more about Cape Town’s roots.

Hierdie inligting sal die Stad help om hierdie mense deur die agterplaasopknappingsprojek van basiese dienste te voorsien. ‘n Inkomste-opname sal ook onder alle volwassenes gedoen word om die bekostigbaarheidsvlakke van die onderskeie huurders en hul huishoudings te bepaal.

City alters rebate level

Ferdie Prins van Huis Quasar in Parow is besig om internasionaal naam te maak.

The City of Cape town has increased the criteria in rates rebates in Cape Town for elderly people.

Rebates apply to people living on fixed incomes and the disabled. The increase will hopefully result in more pensioners qualifying for rebates.

The deadline is 31 August for those in need who wish to take advantage of the rates rebate offered to registered homeowners whose total household income is R10 500 a month or less, where the occupants are aged 60 years or more, or if they are the recipients of a disability pension.

“We spent a great deal of time visiting the many senior citizen organisations in the area explaining the rates rebates. Sadly, there is abuse of the elderly, and facilities are limited; we propose many improvements such as funding for homes for the aged and organisations offering home-based support,” said

James Vos, Subcouncil 3 manager.

“The city will embark on a road show to promote the rates rebates and assist the public with their queries by organising information tables at the local shopping centres,” Vos said.

Pensioners can apply at any municipal walk-in centre at Bellville, Parow, Goodwood in Voortrekker Road or Kraaifontein municipal offices in Brighton Road.

Kunsbeurs vir Prins Die Switserse Mond- en Voetskilder-vereniging het onlangs aan Ferdie Prins ’n beurs toegestaan vir ’n onbepaalde tydperk om sy kunstalent verder te ontwikkel.

Ferdie is ’n mondskilder van Huis Quasar, ’n huis vir kwadrupleë, in Parow. Daar is hierdie jaar vier aansoekers in Suid-Afrika goedgekeur van wie Ferdie die

enigste in die Wes-Kaap is.

Ferdie het sowat twee jaar gelede by die Bellville-kunssentrum se mondskilderklasse aangesluit wat deur Martie Westraadt en die Bellville-kunssentrum aangebied en geborg word. Binne een jaar en drie maande is Ferdie deur ’n agent van Switserland getoets en het hy in Januarie die uitslag gekry dat hy goedgekeur is as ’n student wat deur die vereniging ge-

borg sal word. Hy het besluit om verder by die Bellville-kunssentrum klasse te neem. Daar is in die verlede vier ander mondskilders deur Martie geïnspireer om die opleiding te ondergaan, en uiteindelik deur Switserland aanvaar is.

Mickey Maths: Elkanah House Matric pupil Mickey Chew has been selected to represent South Africa at the International Maths Olympiad in July this year, to be held in Argentina. Mickey was selected last year already, but the Olympiad was to be held in Tunisia and was cancelled for politi­ cal reasons. Mickey has been trained by UCT for the past three years for this event, and the day has finally dawned when all his hard work is paying off. Mickey is Elkanah’s first Springbok mathematician. While UCT co­ordinates the selection, it is important to note that the team is chosen from throughout South Africa, and not just from the Western Cape.

Brandon Phillips will lead the orchestra on 21 June.

Concerts not to be missed Viva la Symphony Concerts kick off at UWC this week.

The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, in collaboration with The University of the Western Cape, presents two popular concerts in the Great Hall at the University of the Western Cape.

A ‘natural talent’ will win pageant The Stage in association with S&L Model Scouts are calling for entries for their Toddlers and Tiaras talent pageant.

TygerBurger is the media sponsor for this event, with involvement from the Reach for a Dream foundation.

The emphasis of the pageant is on being natural and The Stage is encouraging girls to be themselves and have fun.

It is classified as a natural pageant, which they explain is at the other end of the spectrum from the full glitz pageants. In a natural pageant, the girls wear simple flower girl dresses or Sunday school dresses instead of elaborate pageant dresses. Makeup, hair pieces and wigs are not encouraged.

The pageant is more concerned with natural beauty, personality, and poise and stage presence.

Contestants will also take part in a question category where they will be asked fun, easy questions by the judges.

The girls will be divided into age categories. These will be Tiny Miss for girls aged three and four, Mini Miss for girls aged five and six, Little Miss for girls aged seven to eight, Young Miss for ages nine and 10 and Junior Miss for 11 to 12.

Entries cost R100 and the closing date for entries is 4 July.

The final will be held on Saturday 14 July.

Die maksimum bruto maandelikse huishoudelike inkomsteperk vir senior burgers en persone met gestremdhede neem toe van R10 000 tot R10 500, en ’n hele klomp laer bruto huishoudelike inkomstekategorieë ontvang ’n hoër persentasie korting.

Die omskrywing van bruto maandelikse huishoudelike inkomste word gewysig om skenkings en party ongespesifiseerde vorme van finansiële steun uit te sluit, en om die ander inwoners op die eiendom wie se inkomste in aanmerking geneem moet word, te herdefinieer.

VERBRUIKSTARIEWE EN -HEFFINGS

BTW teen 14% moet by die volgende dienste bygevoeg word: water, elektrisiteit, sanitasie en vaste afval.

2.1 WATER Drie stelle watertariewe is goedgekeur (10%-verminderingstarief, 20%-verminderingstarief en 30%-verminderingstarief). Elke tarief is gekoppel aan die vlak van watervermindering wat opgelê word. Aangesien die 10%-verminderingstarief as norm by die Waterverordening ingesluit word, sal dít die tarief wees wat geld. Dit kan egter later na gelang van verdere vereiste beperkings hersien word.

2.2. SANITASIE Drie stelle sanitasietariewe is goedgekeur (10%-verminderingstarief, 20%-verminderingstarief en 30%-verminderingstarief). Elke tarief is gekoppel aan die vlak van watervermindering wat opgelê word. Aangesien die 10%-verminderingstarief as norm by die Waterverordening ingesluit word, sal dít die tarief wees wat geld. HULPTARIEF: Kliënte op die hulptarief wat die gemiddelde maandelikse toegelate verbruik van 450 kWh weens massa-aankope of seisoensvariasies oorskry, sal teen die toepaslike blokke vir hoër tariewe gehef word.

GRATIS 50 kWh: Kliënte op die hulptarief wat minder as 450 kWh per maand ontvang, sal steeds die gratis basiese toevoer van 50 kWh ontvang.

HUISHOUDELIKE TARIEF: Struktuur van die huishoudelike struktuur verander om dieselfde as die hulptarief te wees, ook ‘n laer blok 1 ingestel vir hierdie tarief NUWE TYDSPESIFIEKE TARIEF: ’n Nuwe tydspesifieke tarief vir hoë spanning word ingestel vir toevoer van 66 kV of 132 kV, na gelang van die beskikbare netwerk. Hierdie tarief het dieselfde tydperke, diensfooi en vraagheffing as die herdoopte tydspesifieke tarief vir mediumspanning, maar die energieheffings is onderworpe aan ’n 3%-korting weens die kleiner verliese op dié spanningsvlakke.

Vanaf 1 Julie 2012 sal die kategorie ‘Klein kragverbruiker 1’ met die buitespits-kombinasie tot slegs bestaande kliënte beperk word. Die buitespits-komponente neem ook met ’n bogemiddelde bedrag toe as eerste stap in die uitfasering van hierdie tarief.

LW: Maandelikse diensheffings word bereken as die daaglikse diensheffing, vermenigvuldig met die aantal dae in die rekeningtydperk.

De Wallen intri­ gued the crowd at Rock 44 this week­ end.

‘A bit of old school’ LOUISA STEYL

“I thought we could really do with an old school rock ’n roll band.”

And so, from Craig Jeandré Swanepoel’s thought, came De Wallen, the Kuils River act who have been rocking Northern Suburbs stages.

Since the band’s inception about six months ago, they have already played more that 38 gigs.

Not bad for a band who started out with only four original tracks and a violin player on bass.

Ruan Britz, the band’s bassist, expressed interest in playing bass for the band.

“After only five days of playing bass, he was on stage,” Jeandré says.

“It was the most stressful day of my life,” Ruan quickly adds.

From that first gig at Ellingtons, De Wallen have been hard at work. The rest of the band includes Pieter Bekker on guitar and Dawid Bosman on drums.

Pieter describes their music as “old school rock with a psychedelic touch”.

“We like to use some trippy elements,” he says. These include using a UV light as a bow and playing a guitar with knives suspended

in the strings.

The band’s name is a throwback to Jeandre’s Dutch descent (he was born in the Netherlands). De Wallen is the name of the road that runs through the Red Light District in Amsterdam, but recently the band have also discovered that the word refers to “The Surge” in German.

“That’s a good description, because that’s what we bring to the table,” Jeandré says.

The band’s objective is to put a smile on their audience’s faces.

“We don’t play to get paid, we play and then get paid,” Pieter says. They describe their performances as energetic, but intimate.

“Technically it’s not difficult, but it makes people happy,” Pieter says of their music.

The band, who are sponsored by Pieter Smuts Music in Parow, are planning to release an EP in the next few months. They are also working on a music video.

On 16 June, De Wallen will be at the music festival at De Kuilen High School. They are also looking forward to the Bastille Festival on 14 July.

Hamlet generation LOUISA STEYL

Table View’s Jade Bowers has brought iHamlet to Cape Town.

The production, directed and designed by Jade and starring Ashraf Johaardien, is on at Theatre on the Bay until Friday. iHamlet is a post-modern, 60-minute version of Shakespeare’s longest play.

This take on the play, written by Robin Malan, another Capetonion, specifically for Ashraf, unfolds from Hamlet’s perspective with flashes of his wit and playful humour.

Jade says that because iHamlet is far from the traditional play, in that it’s a oneman show, it was challenging but also interesting to work on.

She explains why iHamlet: “Firstly, this will be an authentically South African Hamlet; adapted, directed and performed

by South Africans.” She continues, “It’s also Hamlet for an iPad, iPod, iPhone, BlackBerry, Facebook, Twitter, Wi-Fi, i-generation. These social networking spaces are effectively the new platforms for the performances and monologues of everyday life.”

After matriculating from Table View High School, Jade went on to study at UCT. While doing her undergrad in sociology and drama, she started working at The Little Theatre.

“Daniel Galloway was my mentor at the time,” she says.

She went from stage management to production management, which is where she became interested in lighting design.

When she finished her course, Jade decided to study for her honours in theatre design and moved to Wits to study under Sarah Roberts.

This is where she met Ashraaf, when

they worked together at the Wits theatre.

After doing whole festivals together, the two decided to take on Salaam, a production Ashraaf had worked on, for its 10 year reunion.

Jade also hopes to bring Chlora Queen, a comedy cabaret she worked on for her directing practical, to Cape Town.

Robin Malan collaged iHamlet a few years ago already, but Jade says they never had time to bring it to life. Recently, she and Ashraaf found themselves in a position where they weren’t working on anything.

“We emailed him and said we had time and could get a theatre.” iHamlet comes to Theatre on the Bay after a run at the Joburg Theatre.

Kotov is first Master home in Comrades

Three times Comrades winner, former Olympian and Melkbosstrand resident Vladimir Kotov, was the first Masters runner home and the 21st runner overall in this year’s Comrades Marathon.

Sunday’s downhill race, the 13th Comrades marathon that Kotov has taken part in, saw the 53-year-old cross the finish line in 5:48:12.

Kotov has won seven gold medals in this ultra-marathon over 89km.

His victories in 2000, 2002 and 2004 were all in uphill races. Kotov

has come third twice and placed fourth on one occasion and other than last year when he was thwarted by a stomach bug and leg cramps, he has always completed the race in under six hours.

Belarus born Kotov, who settled in South Africa in 2001, was also the first Masters home in this year’s Two Oceans Marathon which he says he used as a practise run for the Comrades.

Kotov is a founder member of the Century City Athletic Club.

Fierce competition is expected at the first round of the 2012 Spur High School Mountain Bike League on Saturday.

The event will be hosted at the Willowbridge track in Bellville and will see riders giving it their all to secure top scores on the log and a steady start to the season.

According to race co-ordinator, Meurant Botha, they are expecting to have more entries than in 2011 and successfully expand the footprint of mountain biking as a sport.

Priscilla Petersen won the Sages senior golf tournament for women for the second year running at the Coro Creek and Zebula golf courses in the Limpopo province.

Petersen who lives in Kuils River was all smiles as she lifted the Eureka Gowans Cup trophy recently.

Sages started in 1974 as a result of an increasing demand from senior golfers who felt the need for an organisation that would meet their requirements. “It was only as of last year that they created a tournament for women.

“Last year at the first tournament that was played at the Durbanville and Kuils River golf courses I won the championship over the four days of competitive golf. It was a great feeling to defend my title successfully.

“This year was much more difficult. I know and are accustomed to the weather here, but playing in Limpopo on those diffi-

cult courses was not easy. You really have to think your way around the course,” said Petersen.

The Monday and Tuesday of the tournament is played in a team competition with the Thursday and Friday singles.

She started playing golf 12 years ago and never looked back.

“I play on average three times a week and enjoy every moment of this great game. Currently I don’t only focus on my golf but on a programme called Girls Love Golf.

“This programme was started to get girls between the ages of eight and 14 interested in the game. The game has given me so much over the years, I feel it’s time for me to give something back.

“On a Saturday morning between 09:45 and 11:00 I teach these girls at the Stikland driving range the basics of the game.
