ard fraud is rife in Durbanville with several cases being reported lately, especially by elderly people. The Durbanville police warned that fraud cases in which people were asked their banking details are regularly reported. In one of the latest incidents, a pensioner (70) of Vierlanden lost more than R18 000 after she was contacted by the so-called fraud division of Nedbank, said Captain Marchell Rhode, spokesperson for the Durbanville police. She received a call on Wednesday 17 July just after 17:00 from the “fraud division”, stating there were fraudulent attempts to transfer money from her credit card. “The first man I spoke to sounded African and I could hardly understand what he was saying. I asked to speak to someone who can speak English and then another African took the phone. He was much more fluent in English,” she said. He asked her to give him the last three digits of the number at the back of her credit card. “He promised to stop my card and that I can expect my new card the following week. I feel so stupid. I woke up in the night after the incident and realised I have been defrauded – I realised they did not ask for my date of birth as they usually do,” she said. She went to the bank first thing the next morning, just to discover an amount of R18 000 has been transfered from her account to another account. Smaller amounts of R1 000 each were also transferred. The woman, who wants to stay anonymous, said the money was left in her credit
card after she made a large transfer from her savings to her credit card in April for a holiday. A 44-year-old woman from Klipheuwel was defrauded in the same way after she was contacted by Nedbank’s so-called fraud division on 18 July. They asked whether a transaction of R60 000 was authorised. When she declined, they offered to stop her card. “Shortly afterwards she received notifications of transactions of R5 000 and R20 000 on her account,” Rhode said. In yet another incident a woman, also from Vierlanden, lost R34 099 when money was transferred from her account by fraudsters on 7 July. “She received a phone call at home from someone who pretended to be from Telkom at about noon. He said he needed to update her banking details for her payments,” Rhode said. According to him criminals use several methods to acquire and skim cards, or to withdraw money from people’s bank accounts. “Report the suspected fraud as soon as you notice that money has been debited from your account. Fraudsters can also steal your credit card account number, pin and security code. “There are constantly new types of scams in which fraudsters lure you into providing confidential information via email, phone call or SMS. People must think twice before sharing their personal details online or over the phone. Numerous Durbanville elderly people have been defrauded out of their money by giving personal information to criminals over the telephone. It is mostly vulnerable people that are being defrauded out of their money,” he said.
