PROTEA VALLEY: BODY OF SANDRA LENZ FOUND IN BEDROOM ON 22 NOVEMBER

Murder mystery NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

T

he mystery surrounding the murder of a woman in Protea Valley three weeks ago is deepening, with no arrests having been made to date. The body of Sandra Lenz (in her 50s) was found in a bedroom in her home on Wednesday 22 November. Her death is the first recorded case of murder in the area, police have confirmed. She was last seen two days before her body was found, when she took out her rubbish bin. Her bin was still outside on the Wednesday, which made a neighbour suspicious enough to call the local neighbourhood watch. Upon their arrival, they found her

house and security gate unlocked and they called the police, who found her body behind a closed bedroom door. “There was no sign of forced entry,” says Warrant Officer Henrietta van Niekerk, spokesperson for the Bellville Police Station. Contrary to some of the many rumours surrounding her death, Van Niekerk says Lenz’s bedroom wasn’t locked and items weren’t strewn across her house, pointing to an intruder rifling through her belongings. “It was only in her bedroom where things were slightly jumbled. The rest of the house looked normal.” “Trivial things” like clothing, remote controls, keys, a monitor and old video recorder were taken from the home, she adds. “Currently it seems she was suffocat-

ed in the attack, but a postmortem investigation will give more clarity on the exact cause of death.” Lenz’s body showed no signs of sexual assault. A case of murder and robbery is being investigated. “A lot of evidence was found on the scene and is being investigated,” Van Niekerk says. Lenz is survived by her ex-husband Helmut, daughter Zena and son Darryn. Darryn says he was asked by the police not to talk to the media about the case or the type of person his mother was, as this could compromise the case. In the quiet street where Lenz lived, many other houses are visibly less secure than the three-bedroom house in which she was found. A caravan stands desolately to the side of the yard where outside lights

were still burning last week. A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said Lenz and her family moved into the house around 12 years ago. “She was a lovely, bubbly, busy person.” She said Lenz was meticulous about her house and garden. “This is why it’s so shocking to me. She was very particular about who came into her house or yard.” Lenz’s ex-husband moved out of the house about five years ago. She had been living alone for the past few years after her adult children moved out. More than one neighbour in the street said they don’t feel unsafe or threatened after the incident.
