DRUMMIES TEAM: ‘7DE LAAN’ ACTORS HELP RAISE FUNDS

Actors drum up support

JAYDEE CYSTER @jaydeecyster

T

he local drummies team from Helderkruin Primary School was supported by 7de Laan actors Quinne Brown (Connie) and David Rees (Chris Welman) in an effort to raise funds for their trip to the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association (SAMCA) Nationals taking place in Durban from 10 July. The modelling show, hosted at Helderkruin Primary School, was organised by Martie Olivier, a parent of one of the majorettes, in an effort to raise funds for her daughter, Hope Olivier (12), as well as the rest of the team, to attend the competition in Durban. “This was supposed to be a small event, but I took a chance and sent a Facebook message to David and Quinne. I was in disbelief when they responded and said that they would attend,” says Olivier. She says the excitement of the girls when she informed them of Rees’s and Brown’s

willingness to attend was the propelling force behind her being willing to undertake this project. Olivier, who often has to work night shift at Groote Schuur Hospital as a cleaning staff supervisor, says that as a single mother to Hope and her four-year-old brother she really needs all the financial assistance she can get in order to attend the Nationals in Durban. “For Hope and myself I will need R10 000 to go to Durban,” explains Olivier. Both Rees and Brown told TygerBurger that they wanted to support Olivier because they have children of their own and they know what it’s like to want to give their children everything. “I have a 13-year-old daughter and I want to give her everything, so that is why I came to support Martie,” explains Rees. Brown reiterated Rees’s sentiments: “I want my so-called celebrity status to mean something and to have a purpose, and what better way to do so than by supporting a fellow mama.” V To page 2.
