Three sisters make clean sweep at national awards T

he three sister publications at WP Media – TygerBurger, People’s Post and City Vision, once again ranked among the very best in the country at the annual Forum for Community Journalists’ (FCJ) Excellence Awards held on Friday night.

In the category for Best Corporate-owned Free Newspaper it was TygerBurger that took top honours – again!

Our sister People’s Post came in second, and the third place went to Cape Community Newspapers’ Tabletalk.

The three sisters then made a clean sweep in the Front Pages category, with People’s Post walking away with the top spot in this category for corporate-owned free newspapers. Their front page of the False Bay edition of 21 June 2016 was selected as the winner. TygerBurger and City Vision took second and third places respectively.

The FCJ Excellence Awards is the only competition of its kind where all local and community newspapers from across the country, big or small, corporate or inde-

pendently owned, compete against one another to be named the best in South Africa.

This year’s competition honoured work produced in 2016. The awards ceremony took place at the Leriba Hotel & Spa in Centurion. Judges included newspaper writing and photography veterans Henry Jeffreys, Joe Thloloe, Fanie Groenewald, Dr Thalyta Swanepoel and Johann de Jager, as well as Lefty Shivambu, Yolanda van der Stoep and Frennie Shivambu.

Beat the winter holiday blues A number of City of Cape Town departments have pulled out all the stops to ensure that the holiday programmes for the winter break will keep children well occupied.

The City’s Mayco member for safety and security and social services, JP Smith, says it can be a challenge to keep the young ones busy for a few weeks during the school holidays, but the City facilities and winter programmes cater for all ages to ensure there is something for everyone.

Smith says the City’s Recreation and Parks Department has a diverse range of both indoor and outdoor activities on offer at its hubs – from board games and concerts, to five-a-side soccer and cricket.

In addition to the usual selection of books and audiovisual materials on offer at librar-

ies, children can enjoy puppet shows, arts and crafts, and talent shows.

“We have an extensive list of programmes to ensure that there is something each day to beat the boredom. I want to encourage parents to send their children to these programmes to not only keep them busy, but also give them the opportunity to socialise and learn even during the holidays,” Smith says.

“Most of our programmes are free of charge and could even lead to newly discovered talents and skills,” Smith says.

He adds that the holiday programme is in line with the City’s Organisational Development and Transformation Plan, which seeks to build integrated communities.

Shooting shocks community JAY­DEE CYSTER @jaydeecyster

T

he shooting of Forest Heights High School learner Keagan Overmeyer (15) has left the Eerste River community reeling.

Overmeyer was shot and killed while attending the drifting event at the Shoprite parking lot in Eerste River on Sunday 18 June.

According to Kleinvlei police spokesperson, Captain Florina Muller, the unknown gunmen were among the people watching the drifting.

“They started shooting at the spectators, fatally wounding Overmeyer and injuring six others,” says Muller.

As can be seen in videos of the incident doing the rounds on WhatsApp, the parking lot, which is referred to as the “pitch”, was filled with spectators when gunshots can be heard going off and people can be seen running in all directions.

According to Forest Heights High principal, Ivan Kroneberg, Overmeyer was a bright learner and talented soccer player. “It truly is a very sad moment for the school,” says Kroneberg. “On many occasions we have spoken out against this pitch where anything goes. You can drink, smoke and do whatever you want there.”

Kroneberg says that parents are aware of the evils taking

place at the pitch but they still allow their children to go, with some even dropping their children off there.

“It seems to me as if Keagan was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time,” says Kroneberg.

In the foyer of the school, learners and teachers have set out flowers, candles and handwritten notes in memory off Overmeyer. The sincerity displayed in the notes written by class members clearly illustrates the sense of loss experienced by his classmates. “We love you Keagan. Tears may dry, years may fly, but you will never be forgotten. Rest in peace. We miss you already.

Enjoy heaven hours,” reads one of the notes.

Overmeyer’s funeral took place at Forest Heights High on Saturday 24 June with many off the learners and members off the community in attendance.

The police were visible at the Shoprite parking lot over the past weekend.

In order to prevent further “dicing” the tar of the parking lot has been lifted.

TygerBurger is still awaiting comment from the City of Cape Town regarding what the parking lot will be used for now.

According to Muller no arrests have been made as yet and the motive for the shooting is still being investigated.

A

group of car enthusiasts from Kuils River, Glenhaven and Bellville-South have taken it upon themselves to make some sort of difference in their community.

The group of friends, who decided to name their group Flatbroke after one of the members made a comment saying that he is always “flat broke” because of the amount of money he spends on his car, went to visit the Sive Nathi Care Centre in Blackheath on Friday 16 June.

The members, together with those accompanying them, made up a group of about 25 people who visited the centre, which provides around-the-clock care to children who suffer from severe mental and physical disabilities.

According to Flatbroke group member, Alwynne Baatjies, they identified some of the needs of the children such as milk required for tube feeding, as well as nappies. “We also took along necessities such as cereal and toiletries,” says Baatjies.

Accompanying the group on the day were members of the Nissan car club who also brought along donations for the children.

The group was taken around the Centre, where they were shown how the day-to-day functioning of the centre works, as well as how they care for the children.

“Our main objective was just to spend some time with the children,” explains Baatjies.

He says they had a great time at the centre and that their visit enabled them to witness unconditional love and care.

“We really developed a new level of respect for those looking after the disabled.”

Before their visit to Sive Nathi the group hosted a fundraiser where they washed cars and sold boerewors rolls.

“We’re just a group of buddies who happen to hang out together because of our love of cars,” explains Baatjies.

ting on their Whatsapp group that one of the guys suggested that they go out and do something good for their community.

“We’ve realised that we are very fortunate as a group of friends,” says Baatjies.

Next up for the group is a soup kitchen on 5 August where they’ll not only be making

and handing out soup, but will also be handing out clothing and blankets received from donors.

Multimillion rand housing project JAY­DEE CYSTER @jaydeecyster

rovincial minister of human settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela, launched the multimillion rand Forest Village Housing Project in Eerste River with a sod-turning ceremony on Wednesday 21 June.

In attendance at the ceremony were community members and contractors, as well as the councillors of wards 16, 17 and 108.

The City of Cape Town mayoral representative, Anda Ntsodo, addressed the community and urged them to work together to ensure that the project is completed on time. “As the community you must ensure that you do not entertain people who have a tendency of blocking and sabotaging projects, as toyi-toying slows down service delivery. Communities must communicate with us if there is a problem” said Ntsodo.

In his address Madikizela emphasised that the project is to benefit the elderly and disabled within the community. “Community leaders must assist government in identifying the vulnerable and deserving beneficiaries,” says Madikizela.

He also identified the four things that the government wants to achieve with the project: “Firstly, we want to ensure that the community is integrated by the project, and

secondly we want to provide a roof over the heads of our people,” explained Madikizela.

He also said that the government wants to give developing and emerging contractors a chance to be involved in the project. “We want to use emerging contractors so that they can also develop the necessary experience and skill to become captains of industry,” said Madikizela. Lastly, he highlighted that this project also serves as a means of taking care of the poor.

It is estimated that the housing project, which has a budget of R1.5 billion and which started in 2015, will be completed by 2020. The project will consist of various types of housing opportunities, which will include affordable housing. It will accommodate residents from areas such as Fairdale, Faure, Bernadine, Malibu Village, Eerste River, Mfuleni, Driftsands and The Conifers.

The sod-turning ceremony marked not only the start of the construction phase of the project, but also the completion of the bulk earthworks and installation.

The Forest Village Housing Project will provide 4820 housing opportunities in the area, with approximately half being allocated to Eerste River beneficiaries and the other half to N2 Gateway beneficiaries.

Warm clothing is needed for the Street Store of Pam Golding Properties.

W

ith Cape Town in the icy grip of winter, our homeless community is in dire need of warm clothing and blankets.

Pam Golding Properties is hosting its third Street Store for the homeless on 15 July as one of its Mandela Day initiatives, and is collecting donations of good-quality clothing, blankets, shoes, food, and other items.

The Street Store will again be held at the Elim Night Shelter in Elsies River.

The Pam Golding Properties office is appealing especially for donations of blankets, socks and beanies to keep the homeless warm this winter.

Charlton Williams, Pam Golding Properties area manager for Goodwood, Athlone and Belhar, says: “The event has been a resounding success for the past two years, and we have no doubt that this, our third Street Store, will go a long way towards providing much-needed comfort and dignity. Last year we were able to provide about 200 people with more than four items of clothing each,” he says.

Homeless people from the surrounding areas of Parow, Goodwood and Elsies River

are invited to attend the Street Store, and they are urged to encourage their friends to come and “shop” for free, good-quality clothing and other items.

But the Street Store is so much more than just a clothing drive.

“We also distributed 30 blankets, 50 pairs of socks and 50 beanies last year, and provided at least two helpings each of food and cold drinks,” said Williams.

Donations for the Street Store can be dropped off at the Pam Golding Expo at the Parow Centre between 3 and 9 July, or at the Goodwood PGP offices at Unit 3, The Boulevard, 159 Vasco Boulevard, Goodwood. Alternatively, contact the Goodwood Pam Golding Properties office to arrange collection.

ings, including a trip around the Peninsula on the Red Bus, as well as going to see a play. “We want to take the learners out of this environment and expose them to what they wouldn’t normally be exposed to,” explains Cheryl-Lynn.

In terms of the couple teaching life skills at the school, they have chosen to focus on the importance of values and morals, as well as goal setting.

“We find that the ambition is there but that it is just a matter of feeding that ambition into the right channels,” explains Cheryl-Lynn.

The couple have also started an “each one reach one” programme in which they encourage learners to motivate their friends who are not at the school to make good life choices and to hold one another accountable. “We encourage the learners to find someone to help and then to carry forward the skills that they have learnt,” says Bradley.

The couple are also attempting to encourage entrepreneurship among the learners by teaching them the necessary skills to run a successful business.

“We try to be as practical as possible and we teach the learners how to draw up basic business plans, as we believe that entrepreneurship is a means of ending the cycle of poverty,” says Cheryl-Lynn.

In February this year she resigned from her job as a financial manager to join her husband in his ministry work.

“We want to bring all of our skill sets and impart that knowledge to the kids,” she says.

She describes their work with the learners at the school as challenging in the beginning. “Because we are not teachers we had to lay a strong founda-

radley and Cheryl-Lynn Roziers from ChooseLIFE Ministries International Youth Centre are set on using all of their skills to positively influence the lives of learners at Forest Heights High School.

The pastoral couple, who have partnered with the school, have been afforded the opportunity to teach Life Orientation to all the school’s learners.

Apart from these classes, the couple have also been mentoring Grade 12 learners, fixing the school’s computer labs with the help of the Genesis IT Community Initiative directed by Llewellyn Scholtz, and attempting to obtain sponsorships for a school minibus.

Cheryl-Lynn says that their work at Forest Heights High stems from a passion for the youth. “We have been so lucky to have the support of the principal and teachers at the school, making our work a lot easier,” she says.

The couple have also started the Life Chasers Network, which is a group of Grade 12 learners that they have been mentoring. “We have been mentoring this group to facilitate peer-to-peer sessions,” explains Cheryl-Lynn.

Apart from these peer-to-peer sessions the learners have also been asked to identify what the legacy is that they would like to leave behind at the school. “We have asked the learners to make a list of the things that they would like to repair at the school, so that we as a group can attempt to do those renovations before they leave,” says Bradley.

Forest Heights High School principal Ivan Kroneberg describes the couple’s influence on the learners as beneficial, saying, “We’ll do anything to keep them here.” He also says that the curriculum followed by the couple during their LO classes has brought about a marked difference in the learners.

The couple, along with their administration assistant Ian Rhoda, want to make as much of a difference at Forest Heights High as they possibly can in the coming two years. Future plans include obtaining sponsorship of a minibus, which they say is a necessity, as they need to have a means of transporting learners to sports matches and other activities. “We have a PBO 18A certificate, which will allow the sponsor of the minibus to qualify for a tax deduction, so it’ll be worth their while,” explains Bradley.

They also plan on approaching corporate companies to sponsor governing body teachers for a year so that they can get the number of learners in each class down from 50 to about 25.

“We want to lessen the numbers in the classes so that learners can be given personal attention during lessons,” explains Bradley.

The couple say they value their relationship with the school and that they don’t think that the partnership will ever come to an end. “We have taken on a lot at the school, but God has been amazing,” says Cheryl-Lynn.

D

ie Hoërskool Forest Heights in Eersterivier spog met sy eie talentvolle opvoeder.

Dr. Jantjie Moolisha Marthinus se sportloopbaan het reeds in 1970 by die Primêre Skool De Meul in die Koue Bokkeveld begin.

Hy het in die apartheidsjare deelgeneem en sy naam was sinoniem met die 800 m in die vroeë tagtigerjare tot in 1992. Hy het in dieselfde tydperk ook aan die 200 m en 400 m deelgeneem. Hy het sy Boland-skolekleure in die 200 m, 400 m en 800 m verwerf en was in 1981 die SA senior skolekampioen en het ook sy SA kleure van die SA Amateuratletiekraad in die 800 m ontvang. Hy was verbonde aan die Hoërskool Fred Gaum op Ceres, nou bekend as die Sekondêre Skool Ce-

res, en het op hoërskool aan verspring, 200 m, 400 m en 800 m deelgeneem.

Marthinus het destyds onder die vaandel van die South African Council of Sport (Sacos) deelgeneem en sy SA kleure in die 800 m ontvang. Hy was van 1982 tot 1986 Sacos se onoorwonne kampioen in die 800 m met ’n tyd van 1:48,6. Hy is in dieselfde jaar as die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland se sportman van die jaar aangewys. In 1992 het hy ook SA kleure ontvang toe hy deel was van die span wat aan die Eenheidspele in Dakar, Senegal, en in Johannesburg deelgeneem het.

“My passie vir sport het begin voordat ek nog op die skoolbanke was. Ek het ook atlete van 1981 tot 1988 afgerig en afrigtingsklinieke op Laingsburg, in die Boland en ook in die Wes-Kaap aangebied. Jeromy Andreas van Eersterivier, tans ’n student aan die

Universiteit van Johannesburg, is een van die atlete wat ek afgerig het,” het Marthinus gesê. Hoewel hy die rekords hou van verskeie atletiekbyeenkomste waaraan hy deelgeneem het, het hy nooit erkenning gekry vir sy prestasies tydens die apartheidsjare nie. Geen erkenning is ook nie deur die Internasionale Atletiekfederasie vir sy prestasies gegee nie. Hy het meegeding teen atlete soos Johan Landman, David Tshabalala, Johannes Mokoena, Hezekiel Sepeng, Johan Fourie, Deon Brummer en O’Neil Simpson, wat hy ook sy vriende noem.

Vir die leerders by die Hoërskool Forest Heights is hy ’n voorbeeld van hoe jy nie jou drome moet laat vaar nie. Hy is tans departementshoof by die skool en het sy doktorsgraad in sportsielkunde aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch verwerf.

Kids learn new skills at rugby coaching clinic Kids between the ages of three and 13 years attended the rugby skills coaching clinic of Philip Snyman, captain of the SA Sevens and World Sevens Champions, on Saturday 24 June at Bellpark Primary in Bellville. The kids learned how to pass the ball, the

proper way to tackle your opponent, and also just to have fun. The fathers were more concerned about their kids not scoring tries and were on the field when the youngsters’ tears started flowing.

t a chess tournament hosted by non-governmental organisation Women for Peace based in Mfuleni, learners were able to showcase the skills they have learnt from chess coach Mzikayise Tusi.

The tournament was played on 16 and 17 June at the Nobantu Aftercare in Mfuleni and featured schools that Tusi has been coaching for the past few months.

Tournament organiser and programme officer at Nobantu Aftercare, Mellissa Falatsa, says that chess has the potential to make a difference in the lives of the children. “We have a need in our community for programmes like these, especially because many of our children turn to gangsterism,” explains Falatsa.

“Chess teaches the children discipline and focus.”

Falatsa says that she wrote to ward 16 councillor Jerome Fitz with the idea of the tournament and that he ensured they were supplied with enough chess pieces for the tournament.

When TygerBurger visited the tournament on 16 June, learners from four teams coached by Tusi, namely Mfuleni High School, Manzomthombo High School, Mfuleni Primary School and Nobantu Aftercare, were competing.

Earlier that morning, representatives of the Mfuleni Police Station also joined the learners in playing a few games of chess.

According to Tusi, chess relates to all elements of one’s life – be it work, home or school. “It helps with calculations,

concentration and rational thinking,” says Tusi. “Chess is able to unlock the brain potential of these learners. All we need to do is invest in them by teaching them the necessary skills.”

According to Nobuntu Bolani whose son, Phaphamani Bolani (11), has been playing chess for Nobantu Aftercare since October 2016, she has seen a marked improvement in her son’s maths marks. “Teachers at the school have told me that his maths marks are a lot better.

He has gone from a 3 in maths to a 4 and even a 5,” she says.

Bolani says that she wants to buy a chessboard next month so that her son can teach both her and her eight-year-old daughter to play. “I want my daughter to play chess as well,” she says. Bolani was present at the tournament, watching her son as he played. “He’s excited to be here and play chess. It keeps him busy and off the streets, which is why I am here to support him,” she explains.

At the end of the tournament various awards were handed out to the learners.

Manzomthombo High School was declared the best school at the tournament.

Tatenda Jim was named the blitz winner and master of dexterity, while Usiphile Mpathani was named the master of versatility.

The genius award was presented to Picasso Kruger.

“Both Kruger and Mpathani are primary school learners,” says Falatsa.

Four learners who participated in the tournament, namely Fabio Bosch, Kruger, Jim and Mpathani, all qualified to play in the Western Cape Libraries Chess Tournament.

Enjoy ‘Super Sunday’ series Club Oscars in Ravensmead, one of the most established nightclubs in the northern suburbs, is set to host the biggest social gathering to hit the area in 2017.

The entry fee is R100 per person and the doors open at 13:00. The event will end at about 22:00. The dress code is casual.

T

he Solid Waste Management Department in Blue Downs, accompanied by City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee member for Area East, Councillor Anda Ntsodo, on Wednesday 21 June gave residents an opportunity to apply for and collect a free home-composting container.

The provision of the composting containers is one of the means adopted by the City to reduce the amount of waste sent to land-

fill sites.

The collection day formed part of the City’s home-composting programme, which provides containers to residents in an effort to encourage them to start composting at home instead of throwing away organic household waste such as eggshells, fruit and vegetable waste, tea bags and tea leaves.

ll roads lead to Salberau on Saturday 1 July when Central AFC face Bishop Lavis in a northern nuburbs super league match.

“We still need to work on our concentration, especially in defence. We are also vulnerable to counter-attacks and that is something to work on. We need to fix our defence and then try to get as many goals as possible,” says Earl Michaels, coach of the home team.

“Bishop Lavis is in a very difficult situation because they are trying to avoid relegation.

“Bishop Lavis is also motivated and trying to make sure they win their remaining league matches to avoid relegation. It is not easy to be in this situation.

“The anxiety of collecting results is something you think about all the time.

“We at Central are working on our players’ confidence right now.

“We are preparing very well for all our remaining matches and not only for the

match against Bishop. Ill-discipline against Bishop Lavis can cost us the game.

They are dangerous going forward and also defend in numbers.

GETTING PEOPLE OFF THE STREETS - HUMANELY The City of Cape Town recognises that it has a duty to manage people living on the streets. In 2014 it created a Street People Reintegration Unit for the reintegration or reunification of street people into society or place of origin.

The unit works with other City departments specialising in this field, such as Law Enforcement.

The unit attends to about 1 000 homeless person complaints/queries per month. It offers social services to street people including referral to shelters and access to Expanded Public Works Programmes, assistance with securing IDs and social grants,as well as social assistance for reunification with the family.

Some successes (June 2016 to June 2017) • Street people issues closed – 14 632 • Street people engaged and assisted - 2660 • Persons reunified with families and off the street - 82 • People placed in shelters and supported during the recent storm - 343 Street people cannot be forced to accept assistance. To achieve long-term results, the unit must engage with people individually and work with them to understand and address their circumstances. KNOCKOUT CHALLENGE: DRAW TOOK PLACE FOR CAPE TOWN LEG

All eyes on Engen Cup T

he draw for the Cape Town leg of the 2017 Engen Knockout Challenge took place on Tuesday 20 June at the River Club in Observatory.

The eagerly anticipated u.17 event takes place from Friday 30 June to Sunday 2 July at Vasco da Gama Football Club in Parow.

Cape Town’s football fraternity was out in force for the draw. In attendance were SAFA Cape Town vice-president and deputy director in the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Bennet Bailey, along with Engen Knockout Challenge Cape Town tournament director, Imraan Morgan, 2017 Engen Knockout Challenge Cape Town ambassador, Brent Carelse, as well as South African football legends Hans Vonk, Donnie Ronnie, Duncan Crowie and Noel Cousins.

Coaches of participating teams from as far afield as Helderberg were also present to witness the event and to discover who their opponents are in the group stages of the pre-eminent youth football event.

Speaking at the draw, Engen’s group sponsorship manager, Brad Bergh, urged the young players participating in the tournament to use it as a stepping stone to launch their professional careers.

“This is where it all starts, and Engen is delighted to be a part of the development of football at grassroots level,” said Bergh.

SAFA Cape Town vice-president, Bennet Bailey, lauded Engen’s commitment to grassroots football.

“It’s a fact that sport plays an important role in shaping the future of our young people.

“Not only has Engen, via the Engen Knockout Challenge, assisted in the development of our local players, but local football administrators have also benefitted by being involved in the organisation of a major tournament like the Engen Knockout Challenge,”

said Bailey.

“It is tournaments such as this that enable teams and players to test their ability to play at the highest level. To the coaches I want to say, treat these players as a father would a son; take care of them and ensure that they stay focused.”

The Engen Knockout Challenge ambassador for Cape Town, Brent Carelse, said he is proud to be associated with the tournament.

“I started my football career at a very young age right here in Cape Town. Succeeding to play at the highest level was always my goal,” said Carelse, who went on to star for Hellenic, Ajax Cape Town, Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United and Bafana Bafana.
