RAVENSMEAD PARK: SODTURNING CEREMONY MARKS START OF CONSTRUCTION
Journey to housing ASTRID FEBRUARIE @astridfebruarie
A
sod-turning ceremony marked the start of the construction of the City of Cape Town’s Ravensmead Park Incremental Development Area on Tuesday 13 June. The ceremony was opened by the City’s Mayco member for informal settlements, water and waste services, and energy, Xanthea Limberg, along with various ward councillors. This upgrade project will primarily create housing opportunities for the residents of Ravensmead. Ward councillor Beverley van Reenen
spoke at the ceremony, saying it was a very emotional day for her as the project was finally a reality. “It has been a very long road that we have walked and it came with many challenges and obstacles in our way, but I am extremely happy that the day is finally here,” she said. Van Reenen said she feared the day might never come, but through hard work and dedication and the community’s patience, they were now able to celebrate the start of the project. “We had many excursions and invited the community along to ensure that the project entails what they want and that the decision is not made by the City alone, as we want them to be happy,” she said.
Limberg said the sod-turning event was an incredibly important day and should be celebrated. “This project represents the five pillars of the City in one way or another, which include opportunity, safety, inclusivity and a well-run city,” she said. Limberg said the project will entail the provision of water connection points, stormwater and sewerage infrastructure and roads in the Ravensmead Park area. She said there will be 51 erven on site; however, only 38 families will benefit, but provision is being made, as many of the families have children who are now adults. “The adult children will also be able to benefit from the site so that every family and
household is able to access basic services,” she said. Limberg said the families will also see the construction of a top structure that meets green building technology requirements, using recyclable material and cement that minimise the impact on the broader environment. Limberg added that the sod-turning event marked the first step in the journey and that every single day as the construction commences will be even more significant. “We depend on every single resident to help us ensure that this particular construction project remains on track so that we can meet our delivery targets and the residents can be in their new homes by the end of the year.”
