Three sisters make clean sweep at national awards

T

he three sister publications at WP Media – TygerBurger, People’s Post and City Vision – once again ranked among the very best in the country at the annual Forum for Community Journalists’ (FCJ) Excellence Awards held on Friday night.

In the category for Best Corporate-owned Free Newspaper it was TygerBurger that took top honours – again!

Our sister People’s Post came in second, and the third place went to Cape Community Newspapers’ Tabletalk.

The three sisters then made a clean sweep in the Front Pages category, with People’s Post walking away with the top spot in this category for corporate-owned free newspapers. Their front page of the False Bay edition of 21 June 2016 was selected as the winner. TygerBurger and City Vision took second and third places respectively.

An integrated crime prevention operation resulted in the arrest of three people and the confiscation of mandrax and dagga in Bishop Lavis over the past weekend.

Bishop Lavis police spokesperson, Constable Samantha Adonis, says the operation was conducted in partnership with Law Enforcement on Saturday 24 June.

“It as a successful day with many successes reported at the end of the operation, one of which was the arrest of a man in Kalksteenfontein for illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm,” Adonis says.

Meanwhile another officer arrested a man for possession of drugs and found 19 half-tablets of mandrax and two “stoppe” of dagga.

“Several fines were also issued for traffic offences, and police also confiscated an unknown amount of alcohol at a premises in Bishop Lavis,” Adonis says. A case of dealing in liquor is being investigated.

“While the operation was being conducted no serious crimes were reported.

“We would like to thank Law Enforcement for their role and for doing an excellent job,” Adonis says.

Menye is new ombudsman A new City of Cape Town ombudsman has been appointed.

Mongezi Menye takes over from Mbulelo Baba who recently retired.

The office of the ombudsman investigates and facilitates complaints by residents about maladministration, injustice and poor service delivery by the City.

The ombudsman must provide a timely and effective assessment and investigation of complaints, explains deputy mayor Ian Neilson.

“Menye, who has already taken up the position, holds a law degree and numerous

certificates in forensic and investigative auditing. He is currently studying towards a master’s degree in Conflict Management NMMU. “During his studies and work experience he has gained valuable experience related to negotiation, mediation, adjudication, forensic investigation, governance and strategic management,” says Neilson.

“As an administration, we are fully committed to supporting his office and doing our very best to ensure that we provide top levels of service to our residents and implement corrective action immediately.”

Die skoonmaak van die treinstasie was ’n gesamentlike poging tussen Prasa, die Parow-buurtwag, Parow-polisie, Stad Kaapstad, wetstoepassing, metropolisie, die VRCID, Shoprite, Porto Santo-slaghuis in King Edwardstraat en Francheska Walker, raadslid vir wyk 26.

“Dit is die derde keer dat ons die treinstasie skoonmaak. Ons het op Maandag 19 Junie begin deur eers die rommel op die perronne en tussen die treinspore bymekaar te maak. Die buurtwaglede is gevra om ekstra swartsakke en handskoene saam te bring, want jy weet nie wat jy alles tussen die rommel optel nie,” het Walker gesê.

“Toe ons begin het, het ons nie geweet hoe groot die taak sou wees om Parow-stasie skoon te maak nie. Een van die eerste dinge wat ons gedoen het, was om die haweloses wat hulle langs die heining by die derdeklas-gedeelte op die stasie gevestig het, te oorreed om liewer by nagskuilings verblyf te gaan soek of terug na hul families te gaan.

“Die Stad het selfs aangebied dat hulle aansoek moet doen vir die uitgebreide openbare werkersprogram (EPW) van die

Stad, maar hulle het nie belanggestel nie.

“Die Parow-polisie en wetstoepassing het die haweloses toe gevra om hul besittings te verwyder en versoek om by nagskuilings verblyf te gaan soek, maar daarvan wou hulle niks weet nie. Dit is nie die eerste keer dat ons hulle vra om terug na hul families of gemeenskappe te gaan nie,” het sy gesê.

Volgens haar is van die smouse wat by albei ingange stalletjies opgesit het, ook gevra om die perseel te ontruim.

“Almal wil ’n geldjie verdien om die pot aan die kook te hou, en die smouse is danksy die polisie en die wetstoepassing van die perseel verwyder.

“Tydens die skoonmaak-aksie het ons agtergekom dat die kennisgewingstekens op en om die stasie besig was om te verdof en dat dit onduidelik is.

“Jy kon amper nie meer uitmaak wat op die verskillende kennisgewingstekens staan of dit lees nie,” het Walker gesê.

Volgens haar was die ses kennisgewings dat jy nie die spoorlyne moet oorsteek nie, amper nie meer sigbaar nie.

“Dit sal so gou as moontlik vervang moet word, want dit is gevaarlik en onwettig om spoorlyne oor te steek. Ander kennisgewings wat ook vervang moet word, sluit in die geenrook- en uitgangstekens oral op die perronne.

“Die gebou moet ook geverf word, want

die verf skilfer af en ook om van die graffiti op die mure ontslae te raak. Die ingange na die stasie aan albei kante moet opgeknap word en die gras en onkruid tussen die sementblokke is ook uitgehaal.

“Die kaartjieskantoor, die wagkamers en die toilette moet nie net geverf word nie, maar daar is herstelwerk wat gedoen moet word,” het sy gesê.

Al die rommel, gras en onkruid is op 21 Junie deur ’n vullistrok, wat deur Walker gereël is, van die stasieperseel verwyder.

“Ons het ook die Elsiesrivier-stasie skoongemaak en ek kan met trots sê dat die stasie nou die skoonste op die noordelike treinroete is. Met die skoonmaak van Parow-stasie wou ons dieselfde doen en hopelik het die pendelaars die verskil gesien toe hulle Woensdag hul treine gehaal het,” het sy gesê.

Third Street Store to be held for the homeless

W

ith Cape Town in the icy grip of winter, our homeless community is in dire need of warm clothing and blankets. Pam Golding Properties is hosting its third Street Store for the homeless on 15 July as one of its Mandela Day initiatives, and is collecting donations of good-quality clothing, blankets, shoes, food, and other items.

The Street Store will again be held at the Elim Night Shelter in Elsies River.

The Pam Golding Properties office is appealing especially for donations of blankets, socks and beanies to keep the homeless warm this winter.

Charlton Williams, Pam Golding Properties area manager for Goodwood, Athlone and Belhar, says: “Last year we were able to provide about 200 people with more than four items of clothing each,” he says.

Homeless people from the surrounding areas of Parow, Goodwood and Elsies River are invited to attend the Street Store, and they are urged to encourage their friends to come and “shop” for free, good-quality clothing and other items.

Donations for the Street Store can be dropped off at the Pam Golding Expo at the Parow Centre between 3 and 9 July, or at the Goodwood PGP offices at Unit 3, The Boulevard, 159 Vasco Boulevard, Goodwood. “Die idee is nie om die wiel nogmaals uit te vind nie,” sê prof. Dorothea van Zyl, uitvoerende direkteur van die inisiatief en stigter van die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) se Woordfees.

“Die TygerArea-kunsteprogram en Tygerfest wil graag alles wat reeds in die gebied gebeur, belig en help bemark, maar dit ook aanvul met aanbiedings wat mense op allerlei maniere bewus sal maak van dié streek.”

Die idee vir TygerFest het in 2015 begin posvat toe prof. Erwin Schwella van die Universiteit Stellenbosch se skool vir publieke leierskap (SPL) vir Van Zyl genader het.

Schwella het by die geleentheid gesê hulle het gevoel ’n stad kan nie net op sekerheid en skoonmaak fokus nie, maar ook kultuur.

Volgens Van Zyl het hulle gevoel daar word te min aandag gegee aan goeie gebeurtenisse wat reeds in die gebied plaasvind.

“Daar kon veral veel meer gewoeker word met al die kuns- en kultuurtalente, maar daar is ook besluit om dit te kombineer met entrepreneurskap en kunstepreneurskap,” vertel Van Zyl. Organiseerders sê die fees sluit aan by die werk wat die Groter Tygerberg-vennootskap (GTP) en die VRCID reeds in die area doen. Om alles bymekaar te bring is Tygerfest in Maart vanjaar as ’n nie-winsgewende maatskappy geregistreer.

Die maatskappy se werk bestaan uit die jaarprogram (met eie aanbiedings en bestaande aanbiedings in die gebied), asook die TygerArea-kunsteprogram en ’n klein jaarlikse fees. Anroux Marais, Wes-Kaapse minister van kultuursake en sport, wat ook by die geselligheid was, het gesê haar departement ondersteun die projek ten volle.

Kitting kids out for school this winter

A

bout 115 learners from various schools in Ravensmead each received a winter school kit to keep them warm on the cold and rainy days of winter.

Each kit was personalised with a name tag.

The handover event, dubbed ‘Kit a Kid 4 School’, was organised by Party with a Purpose Productions.

The event took place at Ravensmead High School on Saturday 24 June.

The children who are beneficiaries of this initiative, along with their parents, were invited specially to attend the handover.

Chad Abrahams, founder of the organisation and originally from Bonteheuwel, says the kit consists of a rain jacket, beanie, gloves and a scarf.

The learners to benefit from the project were identified with the assistance of the provincial department of education.

The selected learners are from Belhar Primary, Eurecon Primary, Gardenia Primary, Pinedene Primary, Vorentoe Primary and Uitsig Primary.

The guests were also treated to various art sessions hosted by the Butterfly Art Project, as well as Come & Play. Other

stakeholders included the Department of Community Safety, Pink Ladies and the police.

Abrahams says he is very grateful to everyone who partnered with him and supported the event. “We appreciate the support we have received thus far and hope to continue our partnership with all the stakeholders so that we can help more learners across the province,” he says.

Abrahams adds that he knows the joy of finally having something to call one’s own.

“I grew up in a family of 14 children and being the last born I always received the hand-me-downs, but it did not keep me back from achieving what I wanted in life. And I worked hard to ensure that I could one day give back to other children who are in the same type of situation I used to be in,” he says.

Abrahams says he will continue to give back and calls on the public to support their local schools and learners who are in need of school clothing and other school essentials.

“Children should go to school and be able to focus on their academics, and if we can help them achieve their goals by helping to kit them out, then we must do so,” he urges.

T

he management of Tygerberg Meals on Wheels in Parow hosted an outreach programme in Parow Park during which they provided meals to over 300 residents.

Centre manager Linda Louw said a group of youths and volunteers assisted with the outreach programme to ensure the success of the day.

“We donated the meals to the children and seniors on Saturday as part of our early win-

ter Christmas lunches,” she said.

Louw said not even the icy weather kept the youth away on the day as they, along with the Parow and Tygerberg Baanbrekers, served the residents with compassion.

“The youth entertained the residents with their guitars and singing before dividing up into small groups to visit the seniors in their apartments,” Louw said.

Louw thanked the donors for their contributions, as well as all those who volunteered their time.

“It was a blessed day, which young and old enjoyed together,” she said.

Enjoy ‘Super Sunday’ series

C

lub Oscars in Ravensmead, one of the most established nightclubs in the northern suburbs, is set to host the biggest social gathering to hit the area in 2017.

The Club Oscars “Super Sunday” series kicks off with a bang on Sunday 2 July with a host of top local and South African artists, DJs and entertainers, including Karin Kortje, the N2 jazz band, Vuvu Khumalo and the famous Abie Landsberg Band.

Up and coming hip-hop superstar, Youngsta CPT, will be the main attraction on the day and this performance will serve as his official farewell concert for his South Africans fans prior to departing for Switzerland.

Youngsta CPT will be supported by a host of top DJs, including Codax, Big Rick, Perry, Chello and Randy, to name a few.

The venue will feature three dance floors – the main dance area inside the club, the newly established jazz arena, and the karaoke bar. All three dance areas will be fully

enclosed and under cover.

Those attending this event can expect to be thrilled by the most dazzling and sophisticated sound and lighting systems available.

The outside braai and “chill” facilities will be fully operational, and patrons are invited to bring along their own meat and other items to braai.

The usual tight security arrangements will be in effect. No weapons, drugs or other illegal substances will be tolerated.

The entry fee is R100 per person and the doors open at 13:00. The event will end at about 22:00. The dress code is casual.

Intense police patrol reaps rewards An 18-year-old man was arrested for illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Bishop Lavis during an intense patrol by police.

Bishop Lavis police spokesperson, Constable Samantha Adonis, says the man was arrested on Friday 23 June at about 13:00 as officers were patrolling in Forel Road.

“Due to shooting that claimed the lives of three men on Sunday 13 June, police were patrolling in the area and spotted the suspicious-looking man,” she says.

Adonis says that as the police officers pulled up to the man, he fled from them on foot.

“The officers then proceeded to chase the man. They caught him and while searching him found the firearm and ammunition in his possession,” she says.

Bishop Lavis police confiscated this firearm and ammunition during an intense patrol last week.

Kids learn new skills at rugby coaching clinic Kids between the ages of three and 13 years attended the rugby skills coaching clinic of Philip Snyman, captain of the SA Sevens and World Sevens Champions, on Saturday 24 June at Bellpark Primary in Bellville. The kids learned how to pass the ball, the

proper way to tackle your opponent, and also just to have fun. The fathers were more concerned about their kids not scoring tries and were on the field when the youngsters’ tears started flowing.

Tygerberg Meals on Wheels to meet The management of the Tygerberg Meals on Wheels Centre will host their annual meeting on Tuesday 18 July at 19:00 at the centre, situated on the corner of First Avenue and

Sokkertoernooi bring mense weer bymekaar KIJARA FORTUIN

A

s leerder wil ek die gemeenskap van Bonteheuwel vertel van die Hoërskool Modderdam se jaarlikse Sydney Scott/ George Wynand-sokkertoernooi, wat op Vrydag 19 Mei by die skool gehou is.

Die toernooi is vernoem na ’n leerder (Scott) en ’n onderwyser (Wynand), wat albei oorlede is.

Scott was ’n talentvolle sokkerspeler en is deur Wynand afgerig. Hy het in ’n motorongeluk en Wynand weens diabetes gesterf.

Ons by die skool was trots om weer vanjaar die toernooi aan te bied, wat ook saamgeval het met ons kosbasaar. Almal wat die dag se verrigtinge bygewoon het, het bewys

dat almal kan saamdans op lekker musiek en vir een dag hul geskille kan vergeet.

Die laaste keer dat die toernooi gehou is, was tien jaar gelede.

Die rede hiervoor is dat die inwoners van Bonteheuwel daagliks blootgestel word aan geweld en dat ander net die skool ’n slegte naam wil gee, vertel sy.

Ons het verskeie kultuurgroepe by die skool en vir my was dit mooi om te sien dat almal lekker kan saamwerk. Selfs die bendegroepe by die skool het pret gehad.

As sokkerspeler was Scott baie goed en almal het uitgesien dat hy dalk by een van die Premier-sokkerligaspanne of selfs vir Bafana Bafana sou uitdraf. Hy is juis in die motorongeluk dood op pad huis toe nadat die

span van ’n sokkerwedstryd teruggekeer het.

Wynand het ’n swaar stryd met diabetes gestry en die skool het gevoel dis gepas om die sokkertoernooi na albei te vernoem.

Die kompetisie is verdeel in ’n junior afdeling (gr. 8- en gr. 9-leerders), terwyl gr. 10tot gr. 12-leerders in die senior afdeling kon meeding. Gr. 10A3 het die senior afdeling gewen, met gr. 12A2 die naaswenners.

In die junior afdeling het gr. 9A1 gewen en gr. 9A2 was die naaswenners.

Gr. 10A3 het agt doele geskiet, terwyl gr.

9A2 ses doele aangeteken het. Sokker was nie die enigste sportsoort wat gespeel is nie – die meisies het netbal gespeel.

Die wenners van die senior adeling was gr.

12A2 en die naaswenners gr. 10A3.

Van die leerders, ouers en onderwysers het saamgestem dat hulle ’n verskil in die gemeenskap kan maak as hulle alternatiewe vir bendebedrywighede vir die jeug gee.

Kry die jeug betrokke by die besluitneming en beplanning van skoolgesellighede soos die Valentynsbal, ’n sportdag, ’n karnaval, die Scott/Wynand-sokkertoernooi of die Mej. Modderdam-kompetisie wat later vanjaar gehou word.

Die onderwysers het na afloop van die dag se vieringe gesê die leerders het gewys het dat almal kan saamwerk en dat daar nie altyd moeilikheid of ’n bakleiery op die skoolperseel moet wees nie. Sport bou brûe en bring mense bymekaar.

Hieronder is die wysigings – let asseblief daarop dat die begrotingsdokument, soos deur die Raad goedgekeur, wel korrek is.

SPESIALE AANSLAGGEBIEDE: BYKOMENDE HEFFING

Die bykomende heffings vir spesiale aanslaggebiede word teen 14% BTW belas en word hier onder as rand in die rand weergegee.

Modderdam Aquatics was die algehele voorlopers tydens die oggendsessie van die gala waar swemmers aan 25 m, 50 m, 100 m en aflosse in die vryslag, borsslag, vlinderslag en vryslag deelgeneem het.

Die skool en die swemklub neem weer op Saterdag 9 Julie aan die volgende pretswembyeenkoms in Blue Downs deel.

“Slegs genooide skole en swemskole is na die byeenkoms genooi. Sedert ons leerders en swemmers met Le Clos kennis gemaak het, is hulle nou meer gemotiveerd,” het Gadija Samuels, onderwyser en swemafrigter by die skool, gesê.

Volgens haar was die atmosfeer by sy onlangse besoek elektries en honderde swemmers was oorgretig om net aan hul held se hand of klere te raak en om hom in hul midde te verwelkom.

“Sy toespraak is met luide applous begroet en hy het die swemmers toegespreek oor hoe belangrik die rol van ouers en afrigters is.

Do-or-die game for Central at Salberau THOMAS CAROLUS All roads lead to Salberau on Saturday 1 July when Central AFC face Bishop Lavis in a northern nuburbs super league match.

“We still need to work on our concentration, especially in defence. We are also vulnerable to counter-attacks and that is something to work on. We need to fix our defence and then try to get as many goals as possible,” says Earl Michaels, coach of the home team.

“Bishop Lavis is in a very difficult situation because they are trying to avoid relegation.

“Bishop Lavis is also motivated and trying to make sure they win their remaining league matches to avoid relegation. It is not easy to be in this situation.

“The anxiety of collecting results is something you think about all the time.

“We at Central are working on our players’ confidence right now.

“We are preparing very well for all our remaining matches and not only for the

match against Bishop. Ill-discipline against Bishop Lavis can cost us the game. They are dangerous going forward and also defend in numbers.

“Our players will have to make an extra effort and push themselves to be disciplined, as this match is not going to be easy,” says Michaels.

“We obviously take it one game at a time, but also keep the bigger picture in mind. We talk about every possible way that can help to get us out of this situation.

T

he R270 000 gift of hearing a little girl recently received has been ripped away after part of her cochlear implant got lost and was presumably taken in a shoe store.

“She keeps on asking for it (the implant) and touching her ears,” says Millicent Worship, the grandmother of Leah Roodt (one year, 11 months).

“It’s a huge loss. She can’t hear at all now.

It’s such a terrible thing that happened.”

Leah, from Athlone, received a cochlear implant last year when radio station KFM heard of her plight and organised donations of around R270 000.

The tale led many to tears when Worship was heard crying and shouting for joy on air.

After her appointment the family went shopping at the Jordan Footwear Factory Shop.

When they left the store Leah’s grandfather realised the outside part of her cochlear implant was missing (the rest of the device is under her skin).

Thinking the device had simply fallen off, they rushed back inside where a fruitless search ensued.

Security footage shows a man with dreadlocks and dark clothing kicking the device to a spot where it was difficult to see.

He is then seen picking up the device and walking out of the store.

Mariette Nosworthy, an early interventionist at Carel du Toit Centre who works with Leah, says people easily mistake the cochlear implants for earphones.

“It is actually of no value to anyone else.

It is programmed specifically to her.”

Nosworthy says the loss is a tragedy, as Leah was able to learn speech because of the implant. She is completely deaf without it.

Leah is no stranger to difficult times. She was born with congenital rubella syndrome, also known as German measles.

Her mother, Carmelita, unknowingly contracted the condition while she was pregnant and it was passed on to Leah.

This illness affected her sight, hearing and heart. She had cataracts that were operated on and now wears contact lenses. She also has two holes in her heart.

GETTING PEOPLE OFF THE STREETS - HUMANELY The City of Cape Town recognises that it has a duty to manage people living on the streets. In 2014 it created a Street People Reintegration Unit for the reintegration or reunification of street people into society or place of origin.

The unit works with other City departments specialising in this field, such as Law Enforcement.

The unit attends to about 1 000 homeless person complaints/queries per month. It offers social services to street people including referral to shelters and access to Expanded Public Works Programmes, assistance with securing IDs and social grants,as well as social assistance for reunification with the family.

Some successes (June 2016 to June 2017) • Street people issues closed – 14 632 • Street people engaged and assisted - 2660 • Persons reunified with families and off the street - 82 • People placed in shelters and supported during the recent storm - 343 Street people cannot be forced to accept assistance. To achieve long-term results, the unit must engage with people individually and work with them to understand and address their circumstances. KNOCKOUT CHALLENGE: DRAW TOOK PLACE FOR CAPE TOWN LEG

All eyes on Engen Cup T

he draw for the Cape Town leg of the 2017 Engen Knockout Challenge took place on Tuesday 20 June at the River Club in Observatory.

The eagerly anticipated u.17 event takes place from Friday 30 June to Sunday 2 July at Vasco da Gama Football Club in Parow.

Cape Town’s football fraternity was out in force for the draw. In attendance were SAFA Cape Town vice-president and deputy director in the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Bennet Bailey, along with Engen Knockout Challenge Cape Town tournament director, Imraan Morgan, 2017 Engen Knockout Challenge Cape Town ambassador, Brent Carelse, as well as South African football legends Hans Vonk, Donnie Ronnie, Duncan Crowie and Noel Cousins.

Coaches of participating teams from as far afield as Helderberg were also present to witness the event and to discover who their opponents are in the group stages of the preeminent youth football event.

Speaking at the draw, Engen’s group sponsorship manager, Brad Bergh, urged the young players participating in the tournament to use it as a stepping stone to launch their professional careers.

Members of teams that will participate in the Engen Knockout Challenge this coming weekend at the draw of the competition.

“This is where it all starts, and Engen is delighted to be a part of the development of football at grassroots level,” said Bergh.

SAFA Cape Town vice-president, Bennet Bailey, lauded Engen’s commitment to grassroots football.

“It’s a fact that sport plays an important role in shaping the future of our young people.

The Engen Knockout Challenge ambassador for Cape Town, Brent Carelse, said he is proud to be associated with the tournament.

“I started my football career at a very young age right here in Cape Town. Succeeding to play at the highest level was always my goal,” said Carelse, who went on to star for Hellenic, Ajax Cape Town, Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United and Bafana Bafana.

“I want to encourage all the players participating in this tournament to give their best, as it is tournaments such as the Engen Knockout Challenge that provide the platform for your footballing talent, showing the scouts in attendance that you are the next star on the horizon.

Reigning Engen Knockout Cape Town champions Old Mutual were drawn in Group 3, alongside Grassy Park United, Riverside Rangers and Fish Hoek FC.
