CCTV CAMERA IN MATROOSFONTEIN: CRIME DETERRENT IN OWEN ROAD HOTSPOT
You’re being watched ASTRID FEBRUARIE @astridfebruarie
T
he installation of a CCTV camera in Matroosfontein is expected to help deter crime in the community. About R200 000 will be invested in the camera project, which is set to be installed before the end of this month. Ward councillor Charles Esau says ward allocations are used to fund the project. “The request for the camera comes direct-
ly from the community, as the place where the camera will be installed along Owen Road is a crime hotspot,” he says. Esau says that the camera will not stop crime, but could help deter criminal activity and could also help police with their investigations if a crime has occurred along the stretch of road where the camera is installed. “Crime and gangsterism is a major issue in the community and we are doing everything we can do to curb this and hopefully
the camera will be able to assist us. “It is also to the benefit of those who travel through the area; hopefully they will feel more at ease too,” he says. He adds that Owen Road was also chosen as the site for the installation of the camera due to the high number of accidents that have occurred there. “There have been several accidents along Owen Road as well, including hit-and-run incidents. With the footage we can easily trace the vehicles involved if such incidents occur

in future,” he says. Esau says the exact location of the camera will not be disclosed, as he does not want to draw attention to the equipment in an effort to prevent it from being vandalised or even stolen. “I urge the residents to take responsibility for their community, to report crime or vandalism, and to work with the City and authorities to help curb crime,” he adds.
