T

he installation of a CCTV camera in Matroosfontein is expected to help deter crime in the community.

About R200 000 will be invested in the camera project, which is set to be installed before the end of this month.

Ward councillor Charles Esau says ward allocations are used to fund the project.

“The request for the camera comes direct-

ly from the community, as the place where the camera will be installed along Owen Road is a crime hotspot,” he says.

Esau says that the camera will not stop crime, but could help deter criminal activity and could also help police with their investigations if a crime has occurred along the stretch of road where the camera is installed.

“Crime and gangsterism is a major issue in the community and we are doing everything we can do to curb this and hopefully

the camera will be able to assist us.

“It is also to the benefit of those who travel through the area; hopefully they will feel more at ease too,” he says.

He adds that Owen Road was also chosen as the site for the installation of the camera due to the high number of accidents that have occurred there.

“There have been several accidents along Owen Road as well, including hit-and-run incidents. With the footage we can easily trace the vehicles involved if such incidents occur

Esau says the exact location of the camera will not be disclosed, as he does not want to draw attention to the equipment in an effort to prevent it from being vandalised or even stolen.

“I urge the residents to take responsibility for their community, to report crime or vandalism, and to work with the City and authorities to help curb crime,” he adds.

Entries open for elders awards L

ast year over 200 elders making a profound difference in their communities were nominated for the People’s Post Spec-Savers Community Champions Elders Awards.

People’s Post is a sister publication of TygerBurger.

Nominations for this year’s awards have opened, with the winners to be announced at a ceremony at the end of September.

Last year’s winners were announced at a special high tea at Moyo Kirstenbosch on International Older Persons Day on 1 October. The winners were the late Georgina “Aunty Gina” Mouwers from Colorado Park in the age category 70-80, Vincent “Oom Kallie” Carelse from Lotus River in the age category 80+, and People’s Choice winner Mary Honeybon from Noordhoek who received 160 nominations.

Through the awards, People’s Post and Spec-Savers aim to honour elders over the age of 70 who, despite their age and social

challenges, are making a profound difference in their communities.

People can once again be nominated in the categories 70-80 years and 80+ years.

‘Yes you can’ at ICAN Since the launch of the Interactive Community Access Network (ICAN) in Elsies River in 2014, over 18 000 visits have been recorded at the centre.

The multi-million rand initiative of the provincial Department of Economic Development and Tourism (Dedat) seeks to equip residents with digital skills.

Since the launch of the centre Dedat has invested R10 million in the initiative, with about 50% of this allocated to the refurbishment of the building housing the centre, as well as the set-up and equipment.

The remainder of Dedat’s investment has gone towards centre operations and digital skills development programmes.

Provincial minister of economic opportunities, Alan Winde, recently conducted a visit to the centre as part of his programme for July to highlight practical examples of innovation.

This project is run in partnership with the City of Cape Town, which provides the premises at no charge.

Funded by Dedat as a proof-of-concept project, the centre is managed by a local non-profit organisation, Genesis Community IT Initiative.

The ICAN offering includes access to the City’s Smart Cape free internet service (45 minutes per day per registered ICAN member) and limited free WiFi (300MB per month) from Sonic Wireless, an internet service provider that sponsors the broadband connectivity at the centre. Free and paid-for courses and conferencing facilities are also available, according to Winde.

He says that the ICAN Centre is making a valuable contribution in terms of bringing digital skills closer to the people.

“Since June last year, we have seen an av-

erage of more than 1000 visits each month,” Winde says.

The services residents are using the most are the free internet and courses. In the 2016/17 financial year, Dedat funded courses worth R1.5m, covering areas including mobile app and game development, as well as internet radio production and digital entrepreneurship.

“The ICAN Centre is making a significant impact in improving access to opportunities. Some of the past students have been employed at the centre, while others have found employment through the contacts they have made through the centre,” Winde says.

“Young people have also used the internet access we’ve provided to find job opportunities,” he adds.

The Bonteheuwel Disabled Group runs a daily arts and crafts workshop where they make jewellery and other items to sell to the community.

o make the lives of people with special needs as fulfilled, happy and comfortable as possible is the main aim of the Bonteheuwel Disabled Group.

Project coordinator of the group, David Pillay, says they also aim to assist their families who simply cannot cope with the special caring challenges involved.

“Our mission is to provide care and support services in the broader community and we also aim to transform lives and restore the lives of people with special needs,” Pillay says.

Presently there are about 64 registered clients with various intellectual disabilities on the database.

“Many of our clients have been making use of our social support services at our daycare facility since January 2015 with no financial funding during the year. We have about 28 recipients visiting our centre daily,” he says.

Pillay says they are in need of funding to purchase much needed equipment for their safe haven and creative outlet – a project for people with special needs.

“We bought equipment, materials and computers with our own money. We are now having problems with these items, as

they are overworked. Due to our financial position we find it difficult to replace this equipment and other items to sustain this project,” Pillay says.

The group is in need of one urn (kettle), one gas burner to prepare their daily nutritional meals, one fridge and/or freezer for storing food, and one heavy-duty deep fat fryer (for use in the kitchen and at fundraising events).

“We are also in need of power tools for our wood and tile craft skills training, two computers (one for admin and one for computer training and games), and one projector and screen for our educational and awareness programmes,” he says.

The group also needs one first-aid kit or box, arts and crafts materials, sewing and knitting materials, stationery, candle wax for their candle-making skills training, two soccer balls and two skateboards for sport, as well as games for recreational purposes.

“Although our group is a proudly Bonteheuwel emerging organisation in the disability sector, we are always striving for the positive future expansion of our essential services. The hope is that we will acquire a site to be able to build an operational centre (partial daycare centre, protective workshop and assisted living group home) for persons living with disabilities,” Pillay adds.

he finale of the Parow Centre’s annual kids’ fashion show took place on Saturday 8 July.

The 12 finalists were chosen from about 90 children who auditioned the previous weekend, with only six juniors and six seniors being selected for the finals.

The winner of the junior category for girls was Simoné Gordon (5) from Bishop Lavis, while the winner of the junior category for boys was Brooklyn Ismail (5) from Elsies River.

The winner of the senior category for girls was Oina Witbooi (9) from Kuils River, while the winner of the senior category for boys was Chadley Pasha (11) from Matroosfontein.

Health minister visits hospital

K

eeping in line with the commitment to patient-centred care, provincial health minister Dr Nomafrench Mbombo made an unannounced visit to Karl Bremer Hospital to conduct a walkabout and to engage with staff and patients.

Mbombo made this unannounced visit on Wednesday 5 July.

During the visit hospital staff informed the minister that the estimated catchment population of the facility now exceeds one million people, with those dependent on the facility amounting to just over 900 000 residents.

Karl Bremer Hospital is the most utilised district hospital in the Metro with an inpatient headcount of over 105 000.

The Emergency Centre (EC) is always used to its full capacity. The EC management has introduced a comfortable area in which patients can wait for beds, equipped with recliner chairs to ensure patient comfort.

“I was informed that the major cause of service pressures at Karl Bremer Hospital is the additional services offered outside of what is normally available at a district hospital. The staff do not turn any patients away, because every patient has a right to healthcare servi-

ces,” Mbombo says.

She says she was also pleased to see that the clinical staff are already utilising the unique patient identifier, which is part of the e-vision for digitalising health services.

“The e-vision is aimed at adding value to patient care, addressing service priorities and improving health outcomes,” she says.

Mbombo says the province is faced with a complex disease profile where many people suffer from co-morbidity (multiple illnesses).

“In the facility’s catchment area, the majority of patients tend to have one or more lifestyle diseases, such as diabetes, hyper-

tension and obesity,” she explains.

Mbombo says the prevalence of preventable lifestyle diseases in the province is a key reason why the province encourages communities to take responsibility for their health and wellness.

“We introduced the Western Cape on Wellness (WoW) programme, which aims to fight non-communicable diseases. Our aim is to shift the emphasis from treating illnesses to promoting wellness. We need to stop mopping the floors and close the tap.

“Health services are our core business, but health is everybody’s business,” Mbombo says.

No boredom in Bonteheuwel

H

oliday programmes form an integral part of ward councillor Angus Mckenzie’s office as he is committed to ensuring a safer environment for children during the school holidays.

“In most cases, if these programmes did not exist, we would have more kids wandering the streets during the day due to parents having to work. This automatically results in the creation of a difficult situation,” he says.

Mckenzie says the City of Cape Town has ensured that every single City facility throughout the Bonteheuwel area is open and has programmes running for kids.

“These programmes include a feeding scheme, as well as soft skills training including sport,” he says.

He says when he took office, one of his promises was that the community facilities would be open to the children of Bonteheuwel so that they could access and enjoy them during holiday periods.

“I would like to thank the many religious bodies, schools and community-based organisations that believe in my vision and have opened their doors and hearts to expand the holiday programmes in Bonteheuwel,” he says.

He adds that, “Social change starts at the bottom, and the generations to come will benefit from what we are doing today.”

Kaap het 25 uit 52 van die finaliste AVRIL FILLIES

A

ltesame 25 van die 52 finaliste wat einde verlede maand aangewys is om aan die eindronde van 2017 se SAMRO-Hubert van der Spuy-nasionale musiekkompetisie deel te neem, is van Kaapstad en omgewing.

Die Kapenaars se ouderdomme wissel tussen 7 en 13 jaar. Die finaliste tree van 25 tot 29 September by die Hugo Lambrecths-musieksentrum in Pictonstraat, Parow op.

Die kompetisie word deur die Tygerbergtak van die Suid-Afrikaanse Vereniging van Musiekonderwysers (SAVMO) gereël en aangebied.

Die eerste kompetisie is in 1989 gehou en in 2013 het die kompetisie sy 25ste verjaardag gevier.

Die kompetisie is die enigste een in SuidAfrika en het al verskeie jong musici met hul musiekloopbane gehelp om selfs internasionale status te verwerf. Baie van hulle het ook suksesvolle musiekberoepe.

Volgens Hilda Boonzaaier, voorsitter van SAVMO, is die missie van die kompetisie om jong talentvolle musiekleerders die kans te gee om van mekaar in ’n kompeterende omgewing te leer en ook om op nasionale vlak mee te ding.

Wyle Leon Hartshorne het die rol van die kompetisie in die gemeenskap as volg beskryf: “Buiten dat deelnemers die kans kry om hulself in hul onderskeie afdelings te bewys, kry hulle ook kans om nie net met mekaar te meng nie, maar ook met onderysers en ouers uit diverse gemeenskappe van oral in die land.

“Potensiële kandidate van arm of agtergeblewe gemeenskappe wat musiekonderrig ontvang deur uitreikprogramme, maar wie se vordering vertraag of in gevaar gestel word weens sosio-ekonomiese probleme, word bygestaan om in te skryf, oudisies by te woon en om op gelyke vlak met alle deelnemers in hul ouderdomsgroepe mee te ding.”

oelwagters word nie gewoonlik as speler van die toernooi aangewys nie, maar Renaldo Leaner van Elsiesrivier, doelwagter van die PSL-klub Ajax Cape Town, het in die Tebrogen-toernooi – een van twee toernooie waaraan hy in Nederland deelgeneem het – dié titel verwerf.

Hy en twee van sy Ajax-spanmaats, Luthando Mateza (middelskakel) en Tasriq Matthews (vleuel), is ook in die Uitgeesttoernooi in die Dream Team opgeneem.

“Dit is elke sokkerspeler se droom om oorsee te gaan speel, en dit was my tweede oorsese toer. Klubspanne van oraloor in die wêreld het aan die twee toernooi deelgeneem, en ons het in die halfeindstryd teen Atletico Maneiro van Brasilië met 1-2 verloor,” het Renaldo gesê.

Wat hy uit sy besoek aan Nederland geleer het, is dat sokker oorsee verskil van hier in Suid-Afrika. “Dit is meer kompeterend en jy sal moet speel om jou plek in die span te behou. Niemand kan sommer net aanspraak maak op ’n plek in die beginspan nie. By sommige klubs is daar meer as twee aanspraakmakers in ’n posisie en jy sal moet uithaal en wys dat jy die beste persoon

vir daai posisie is,” het hy gesê.

Sy plaaslike held is die oud-Kapenaar Moeneeb Josephs, ook bekend as “Slimkat”, doelwagter van Orlando Pirates.

“Ek bewonder hom omdat hy ook van die Kaap is en ek wil graag soos hy speel. Ek bewonder ook vir Manuel Neuer, doelwagter van Bayern Munich, en wil nou nie eintlik erken dat ek albei dophou om te kyk waar ek my spel as doelwagter kan verbeter nie,” skerts Renaldo.

Hy speel sedert sesjarige ouderdom sokker en het sy eerste sokkerwedstryd vir die sokkerklub Matroosfontein gespeel. Daarna is hy na die sokkerklub Central, ook in Elsiesrivier, voordat hy by Ajax Cape Town aangesluit het. “By Ajax Cape Town het ek eers in die o.19-Vodacomkompetisie gespeel, wat nou die Motsepe-kompetisie genoem word. Daarna het ek tot nou in die Multichoice Diski-kompetisie deelgeneem, voordat ek saam met die span Nederland toe is. By die Tebrogen-toernooi het ek net ses doele afgestaan en is as die speler van die toernooi aangewys. Ek het in die toernooi waardevolle ervaring opgedoen, wat ek nou in ons plaaslike kompetisie kan toepas,” het Renaldo gesê.

Hy is ’n tweedejaarstudent aan die Uni-

versiteit van Wes-Kaapland en wissel sy tyd af tussen sy studies en sy sokker by Ajax Cape Town.

“Ek het nie baie tyd vir stokperdjies nie, want my studies en die sokker hou my heeltyds besig. Wanneer ek wel tyd kry om te ontspan, speel ek Fifa 2017. Ek wil graag my studies voltooi en daarna al my aandag aan my sokker gee,” het hy gesê.

Dat hy oor goeie sportgene beskik, is daar nie twyfel nie. Sy pa, Trevor, was ook ’n sokkerspeler en het vir die destydse sokkerklub Arcadians in Elsiesrivier uitgedraf.

Sy ma, Sandra, ’n nooi Matthee, het netbal gespeel en het WP-kleure verwerf.

“Ek is gebore en getoë in Elsiesrivier en het my laerskoolloopbaan by die Laerskool Elsbury in Matroosfontein begin en was by die Hoërskool Elsiesrivier in Haltweg op hoërskool tot matriek.

“My raad aan jong spelers is dat jy nooit jou droom moet opgee nie. Jy weet nie wat die toekoms vir jou inhou nie en jy moet bereid wees om baie dinge op te offer om jou droom te bereik,” het Renaldo gesê.

Die voormalige doelwagter van Ajax Cape Town, Hans Vonk, is terug en Renaldo leer ook die fynere kunsies van doelwagters by hom.

“Last year we had 1800 entries, but we will cap it at 4000 this year. The response thus

far has been nothing short of remarkable and the event is as good as any of the others held across the world.” All race finishers will receive a medal and an event T-shirt.

“We recently returned from Germany after competing in the 10th edition of the Fisherman’s Friend StrongmanRun in Germany. AJ Calitz from Fish Hoek performed remarkably well and won the 21km race in a time of 1:52:07. South Africa is on the map

and besides all the attention on us with AJ winning, many international athletes are showing an interest in flying over here to compete in our event. Last year 65 Europeans took part in Paarl.
