PROTESTS IN JOE SLOVO PARK: TYRES BURNT AFTER ILLEGAL LAND OCCUPIERS REMOVED
Flaming protests

T
raffic on Koeberg Road temporarily came to a halt this past weekend due to protest action in Joe Slovo Park, Milnerton. The protest action apparently started on Saturday 17 June and spilled over into Sunday when tyres were burnt in the streets. Tyres were set alight in Freedom Way on Sunday before the crowd of people moved towards Koeberg Road (M5) in Milnerton where more tyres were burnt. No injuries
were reported, however. TygerBurger attempted to get more clarity on the matter from the both the Milnerton police and the City of Cape Town. Suzette Little, Mayco member for Area North, says the issue was reported to the City and that the Law Enforcement and Metro Police departments responded. “There was an invasion of City-owned land in the area. The illegal occupiers of the land were warned to remove themselves and any structures from the property, which they refused to do. Law Enforcement, Metro Police and the police, in a joint operation,
removed the land invaders from the property,” Little says. Craig Pedersen, project manager for the Milnerton Crime Watch, confirmed this, saying: “As I understand, Anti-Land Invasion was in Joe Slovo on Saturday to demolish a few buildings on a school property under a court order. There has been a lot of back and forth around it apparently. Ultimately they returned on Sunday, as some folk were showing indications of moving back into the area and this sparked off the protest.” Pedersen says no damages were reported
apart from the road surface on Koeberg Road and Freedom Way as a result of the burning tyres. About 50 people participating. He says the police in Milnerton responded and called in the Public Order Policing Unit, which seemed able to calm things down. Tyres were also set alight at Democracy Way near Sable Square. News of the protest action was shared on social media platforms where people indicated hearing police and ambulance sirens heading in the direction of Joe Slovo. V To page 2.
