RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION: APOLITICAL ORGANISATION FOCUSED ON SERVING RESIDENTS

Bothasig gets BRA

espite the stormy weather, a fair number of residents showed up last Wednesday 7 June for the establishment of the Bothasig Residents’ Association (BRA). The meeting was led by Clive Owen and Jeremy Keyser, who have been the driving force behind the idea. Owen, who has been living in Bothasig since 1984, said Maureen Gallon initiated the first “public” meeting in October last

year (which was subsequently not regarded by City officials as a public meeting), to reestablish a residents’ association. “She was not able to continue and asked me to take over,” said Owen. He then asked Keyser, “who is community oriented and always willing to serve”, according to him, to join him in re-establishing the BRA. Owen spoke on the aims and objectives of the BRA and said the most important thing is to serve the residents of Bothasig. He stressed it will be an apolitical organisation not allied with any political party.

The best

“We intend to liaise with the ward councillor, Helen Carstens, as far as possible – there will be times when we will agree to disagree and we are quite prepared for that. We want to be absolutely sure that we know what the priorities of the residents of Bothasig are, and we are going to put them forward to the councillor or any relevant organisation.” This, he said, will be to ensure projects identified by the BRA are implemented and completed within a reasonable time. Owen said the BRA will keep residents of Bothasig informed of developments and decisions tak-

en by the association. Keyser addressed the attendees on the functions of the BRA, and also pointed out what they are not prepared to do. They will look at legitimate issues that will affect Bothasig or the well-being of the residents, but “one needs to consider what legitimate issues are,” said Keyser. He explained the role of the BRA will be to uplift and promote the community at large and that they are not there to deal with personal issues, but issues that will affect the community.
