rooklands Primary School has a vision of creating a better school with learners exposed to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Principal William Shand is for this very reason incorporating the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) programme at his school.

He even got exchange students from India to come and share their research in this field

with the learners.

Lino Yovan and Ganesh Khatei from the Manipal Institute of Technology, one of the top private engineering colleges in India, have been doing research at the University of Stellenbosch while they have been in the country.

These two visited the school last week to share their knowledge and also help the teachers to improve their teaching of these subjects.

Lené Paulse, Science teacher at the school,

says this programme has really made a huge difference. “You can see they take note and want to learn. I also include different methods in my teaching to make it interesting for the learners.”

Paulse said she thought that since it is school holidays, the kids might fall out one by one after Monday. “But they even showed up before me and wanted to know when they can start.”

Timiney Malgas (13) said she loves geography and wants to become a pilot. “I have al-

ready done my homework and know what it will take to become a pilot.”

Zoë Witbooi (13) said she is fascinated with the human brain and wants to become a neurosurgeon. “I did job shadowing at Tygerberg Hospital, but was unfortunately not allowed in theatre.”

Cameron October (12) says what stood out for him about this week is that one can turn cow dung into fuel.

Shand says he has made excellence the school’s mantra.

housands of Capetonians got the shock of their lives when they bought their prepaid electricity this month, with a bill nearly double what they used to pay.

A single mother from Brackenfell, who prefers not to be named in the newspaper, now pays R1.96 per unit, where she previously paid only R1.16.

She is one of 40 000 residents Citywide who were moved from the Lifeline Tariff to the Domestic Tariff on 1 July, all of whom will now have to cough up some 80% more for their prepaid electricity.

Johan van der Merwe, Mayco member for finance, says this was the final phase of the migration to the Domestic Tariff, which has been underway for the past few years.

“What about the thousands of single young people, single parents and young families out there who all rent properties of more than R400 000? Where in Brackenfell or anywhere else in the northern suburbs will you even find a property for less than R400 000?

“As a single mother I am vulnerable. I am not rich and hold down a regular job.

Property values and therefore rent are already exorbitant. My salary will not compensate for this double increase, so where does this leave me and others like me?

Renting a two-bedroom flat that is valued at more than R400 000 is definitely no indication of wealth for me and many others like me, as the City argues. Furthermore I have no solar panels to compensate for use. This argument holds absolutely no merit,” she says.

Airport to be upgraded soon DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

pgrades at Cape Town International Airport to support the growth in air transport demand are on the cards for

2018.

James Vos, shadow minister of tourism, made this announcement at the South African Intruder Detection Services Association (Saidsa) conference held in Cape Town last week.

Private security companies from across the City and province attended the conference.

“Good news is that the environmental authorisation has been granted for this project to continue and if all approvals are received, construction is estimated to begin mid-2018,” Vos said.

According to him, this upgrade will facilitate unrestricted air access into Cape Town.

The most prominent upgrade coming is

a new and realigned runway amounting to R3.18 billion. Next is the construction of new terminal buildings and boarding gates, including additional aircraft parking stands, taxiways and service roads.

“The realigned primary runway, Runway 18-36, will be 3500m in length and will be built to international specifications, allowing larger aircraft, like A380s and other Code F aircraft, to land here,” he said.

Focusing on the Western Cape, tourism is beyond doubt the biggest income driver in this province, according to Vos. In a very short time the City secured six new routes and eight route expansions, resulting in over half a million more two-way direct seats coming into Cape Town.

“Since July last year, this additional capacity has generated roughly R3 billion additional tourism spend for the Western Cape. We are also forging ahead with lobby efforts to secure a direct route between the United States and Cape Town,” said Vos.

Touching hearts through the lens DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

H

er unique photographic journey started at the Tygerberg Paediatric Oncology Unit over Christmas 2015 and ended in January this year with the birth of a child.

During this time Brackenfell photographer Candice Rodriques took more than 500 000 images of special needs children in five hospitals and two special needs facilities.

The result: a captivating one-of-a-kind photographic book, which poignantly depicts the emotions of special needs children and their parents, to give the reader a profound insight into their lives.

“Although many would not understand, a disabled child can bring enrichment into your life and touch your heart.”

These words were said to local paediatrician and founder of the Touching the Heart initiative, Professor Pieter Fourie, by the mother of one of his medically fragile patients and served as the inspiration for the Touching the Heart initiative.

The initiative was born when Fourie was looking for a way to share the plight of these children and their families with the world.

On 10 June, the envisioned book was launched at a gala dinner held at Cavalli Wine and Stud Farm in Stellenbosch.

This was the second annual Touching the Heart gala dinner – an event that has grown in leaps and bounds on the Cape Town charity calendar.

The book, which has in the meantime gone on sale to the public to raise funds for the cause, will serve as an awareness medium.

“Caring for a child who is differently abled or medically fragile is overwhelming and it is sometimes impossible to put words to the emotional rollercoaster both the parents and the children find themselves on, where a feeling of utter despair about, for instance, a daunting health issue can transform, in the blink of an eye, into the most joyful celebration of a precious milestone reached,” explains Nicky de Beer, a director at Daniel and Friends Fund and also the mother of a special needs child.

“To keep my composure and to keep emotions at bay during a shoot was very hard.

And having to re-look at those moments when I edited them I had to try to not get attached. But I did get attached,” she says.

Her biggest reward, she says, was finding a passion for special needs and disabilities photography, which she will now pursue as a specialty in photography.

Her favourite pictures include that of a little girl dancing in a hallway and that of a mother and father holding their daughter as she awoke from anaesthetic.

Another favourite is that of Wihan Beneke, a little boy with Down Syndrome, in his yellow bow tie, who featured on a TygerBurger front page last year. He sadly passed away on 5 July 2017.

Having completed this emotional journey, Rodriques says she learned many things.

Helping moms make a living DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

Over the past seven years hundreds of previously disadvantaged unemployed mothers have turned their lives around by selling clothing via The Clothing Bank (TCB) initiative.

On 27 July TCB will hold another recruitment drive in the far northern suburbs for this unique programme.

The recruitment drive will take place in Kraaifontein.

TCB was founded in February 2010 to empower unemployed mothers to start small retail trading businesses so that they can become financially and socially independent.

“We source excess clothing and household goods, customer returns and end-ofseason merchandise from the major retailers like Woolworths, Edcon, Pick n Pay Clothing, Clicks and Checkers, as well as the general public in South Africa, and use this as a tool to teach,” explains Tracy Collins from TCB. Unemployed mothers join the two-year training programme and very quickly start

their own small businesses by trading mainly in the informal sector, with the goods they buy from TCB at discounted prices.

“We have the capacity to support 800 mothers trading from our five branches in Cape Town, Paarl, Johannesburg, Durban and East London,” she says.

“We don’t believe you can learn business in a classroom. Our programme is practical and experiential. We create a nurturing and supportive environment, which builds selfbelief so women can become successful business owners.”

The trainee is exposed to over 1000 hours of practical training and support in modules like money management, business skills, computer skills and life skills.

“We approach the development of women holistically. We have an extensive support system, which includes coaching, mentoring and counselling.”

The objective is that each woman should earn at least R4000 per month.

Dan Plato, die minister vir gemeenskapsveiligheid, het die oorhandigings gedoen.

Hy sê akkreditasie is ’n belangrike stap vorentoe vir buurtwagte.

Die 20 buurtwagte sluit in Somerset-Wes, Sanddrift, Rylands, Wynberg, Surrey Estate, Sheradon Park, Tygerhof, Helderzicht, Monte Vista, Table View, Constantia, Highlands Village, Parowvallei, Rosebank en Wesbank.

Die 20 sluit aan by 73 ander buurtwagte wat reeds voorheen oor die provinsie heen akkreditasie ontvang het. Die buurtwagte het ook hul weerkaatserfrokkies, flitse, veiligheidsfluitjies, brandblussers, noodhulpkissies, stroboskopiese flitse, plakkers en ’n sluitbare houer ontvang.

eerders van die laerskole Bloekombos, Wallacedene en Ekuthuleni het Donderdag die Wes-Kaapse onderwysdepartement (WKOD) se Veilige Skole-program by die Hoërskool Bloekombos bygewoon.

Dit was een van drie dae waar daar met die gr. 4- tot 7-leerders gepraat is oor groepsdruk, konflik, kinderregte, selfbeeld en boeliery.

Fundiswa Didishe, die distrik se Veilige Skole-koördineerder, sê skole kan nie die

leerders en skole alleen veilig hou nie.

“Dit kan slegs deur vennootskappe gedoen word,” sê Didishe.

Sy sê in veral Bloekombos het sy agtergekom daar is ’n kultuur om hul skool op te pas.

Didishe vertel die interaksie met die kinders was redelik goed en al was hulle min, kon hulle werk met dié wat opgedaag het.

Die provinsiale minister, Debbie Schafer, sou die skool besoek, maar het skielik siek geword.

Twigg se ‘pap­gedagte’ kring nou wyer uit SALETTE CLOETE

D

ie “pap-gedagte” het begin as net ’n idee om honger magies te vul met ’n warm bord kos.

Grant Twigg, Scottsdene-raadslid, het met die idee vorendag gekom om soggens pap uit te deel aan behoeftige kinders.

Twigg sê hy het die projek sommer uit sy eie sak gefinansier.

“Dit was my eie baby en dis nie nodig dat ek ’n klop op die skouer daarvoor moet kry nie. Maar nou met die skenking van pap uit die gemeenskap, moet ek dankie sê.”

Die projek het ’n groot skenking mielie-

meelpap van 500 kg uit die gemeenskap gekry. Dit was so baie pap dat Twigg dit kon uitdeel, onder meer aan die raadslid Brenda Hansen van Scottsville.

Hansen sê dis lekker gegeurde piesang- en aarbei-mieliepap. “Ek proe eers self daaraan om seker te maak die kinders gaan daarvan hou. Dis baie lekker,” sê sy.

Sy het dit verlede week by die FF Erasmussaal in Scottsville as deel van die vakansieprogram uitgedeel. Twigg het pap uitgedeel in Madisonhof, Pocket 1, Pocket 2 en in Nelliestraat in Scottsdene.

The ‘last thin blue line’ against crime DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierore

P

remier Helen Zille described local private security companies as the Crime Fighters of Cape Town – “the last thin blue line” so to speak.

She addressed industry players at the South African Intruder Detection Services Association (Saidsa) symposium held in Observatory recently.

Zille echoed the concerns of Saidsa chairman in the Western Cape, Pierre Gouws, when she urged the industry not to fall capture to criminal elements.

“The security sector impinges on everything in our country and it is therefore critical to defend this industry against capture by criminals.

According to Gouws, who is also the owner of District Basset, the industry currently has to be very wary of criminal elements sneaking in to create havoc.

“In addition to this, more pressure is placed on our shoulders by the industry red tape, as well as the ineffectiveness of the police,” Gouws said.

Zille said the risk of criminal capture of the security industry is as real as that which has threatened our very democracy of late.

This threat applies not only to private security companies, but also to police and the national prosecuting authority.

“And in the absence of public safety, our communities are the ones that suffer. Community programmes are derailed and criminals have free rein,” she said.

Zille referred to one of the Walking Bus initiatives in Cape Town that was recently “hijacked” by gangs in the respective area, to be used to recruit new members.

“This initiative was supposed to safe-

guard children walking to and from school by recruiting volunteer parents to walk with the children, but was instead infiltrated by gang members,” she said.

Likewise, in some areas the City was unable to roll out its fibre optic programme, as the areas were not safe for installers to work in.

“Workers were approached by criminals who demanded protection money. These areas thus remain without internet connectivity, leaving the children in these communities without this essential service.”

Moreover, she said, the police remain massively under-resourced in the Western Cape and hugely outnumbered by private security forces.

According to her there are three private security officers for every one police officer, and 15 private security vehicles for every one police vehicle.

“Were it not for this industry, we would be in a much worse place. You are what is left to hold the line for us.”

She urged role players to uphold the integrity of the industry, as the future of South Africa depends heavily on this.

Dan Plato, MEC for community safety in the Western Cape, said South Africans are spending as much as R45 billion per year on private security measures.

The most recent Stats SA survey found that 50% of households have taken physical measures to protect their homes, while 11% employ private security companies.

“With around 490 000 active private security officers in the country, it is nearly double the size of the South African Police Service and the South African National Defence Force combined (194 852/77 597).”

Ons het ’n huis in Kaapstad gekoop en skielik is ek hartseer.

My babadogter gaan in ’n stad grootword.

Voordat jy my met die witbrood onder my arm gooi – ek weet self hoe belaglik dit klink. En hoewel ek met eerlikheid kan sê ek beplan elke sentimeter van die huis se dekor, gun ek ook vir myself ’n skrikkerige traan of twee. Want hierdie wêreld ken ek nie. Definitief nie hoe dit werk as jy kinders daarin grootmaak nie.

Regte Kapenaars, diegene soos my dogter eendag gaan word, sal met ergernis uitwys dat die noordelike voorstede van Kaapstad “nie eintlik stad is nie” (“As jy nie in Langstraat bly nie, dan is dit nie stad nie”).

Maar die noordelike voorstede van Kaapstad is naby genoeg aan ’n hoofweg (en ’n inkopiesentrum en ’n fliek en ’n teater!) om vir my as stad te tel.

Sal my kind, soos hierdie Kapenaars, sukkel om te verstaan hoe ander mense grootword in Dalk sal sy later ’n plek waar daar meer slaggate as ook verstaan pad is? Sal sy ook na almal wat almal begin verwys wat verder as leer as hulle ouer Worcester bly as “Valies” – al bly word: dat heim­ hulle in Durban of Nelspruit of wee ’n blikskot­ Kuruman?

Gaan sy genoeg tel is verstaan van armoede? Hoe leer ’n mens empatie aan kinders as vooruitgang al is wat hulle sien?

Moet my nie verkeerd verstaan nie. Ek wil vir geen geld op aarde teruggaan platteland toe nie. Ek het ook te gewoond geraak aan klein dinge wat vir ’n plattelandse kind groot is: om nie te hoor jy moet twee weke vir iets wag om reggemaak te word omdat dit “stad toe gestuur is nie”. Om op skool fancy vakke soos geskiedenis of kuns of Frans of Duits of drama te kan neem. Om groot winkels te sien wat net speelgoed verkoop. Of net kunsbenodighede. Of net kameras.

Gaan sy ooit kan skool toe stap of fietsry in die strate? Sal sy die mense in die omgewing op hul name ken? Sal hulle haar beskerm? Sal julle haar beskerm?

Sal sy besef dat die res van die land glad nie soos Kaapstad lyk nie? Dat ons nasie soveel meer is as die borrel waarin sy gaan skoolgaan en leef? Dat ons verskeie tale praat en aanwendsels het en elkeen net te dankbaar kan wees dat ons elke dag onder die Afrika-son kan opstaan?

Sy sal seker eendag moet luister na al haar ma se stories oor die lewe in ’n klein dorpie. Dalk sal sy later ook verstaan wat almal begin leer as hulle ouer word: dat heimwee ’n blikskottel is.

Moedeloos oor ons stadsraad Ek is ’n inwoner van Welgemoed wat moedeloos is van ’n gesukkel om met die stadsraad te praat.

Sedert Saterdag 1 Julie is ons sonder water vir ses dae – tot vanmiddag 6 Julie net ná 15:00. Ons sypaadjies, motoropritte en paaie is flenters van waterpype wat bars en ons motors is vuil van al die modderwater wat in die paaie lê. Wanneer ’n gebarste pyp aangemeld word, word die water toegedraai en moet jy weet dit neem 18 tot 24 uur voordat jy weer water het.

As die herstelwerk gedoen is, word die water weer oopgedraai en almal storm om die waterbottels so gou moontlik weer vol te kry.

Binne 30 tot 50 minute is die water weer af – ’n pyp het weer gebars. Ná drie dae het ek alle pogings aangewend om met die stadsraad te praat om dringend senior of kundige mense te kry om die proses van water oopdraai en die drukking reg te gebruik sodat daar nie weer barste kom nie. Skrywes aan die burgemeester, stadsbestuurder en rampbestuur word net deur iemand aangestuur na waterlekkasies en ’n afskrif vir my.

Ek bel die burgemeester, maar sy is nie beskikbaar nie. Ek laat my naam en nommer en vra sy moet my bel, want ek wil help met die waterkrisis. Niks gebeur nie.

Ek bel my raadslid, los ’n boodskap want die oproep word nie beantwoord nie.

Nodeloos om te sê, niks gebeur nie. Ek wil eers sien of ons nog môreoggend water het en besef nou dat die belastingbetaler nie ’n sê het nie en net geken word as dit verkiesingstyd is.

Beware of crying ‘criminal’ with pics In response to the “Beware of crying ‘criminal’ with pics” article in TygerBurger of 5 July.

On page 11 of the Tyger Valley issue you carry an article by Desirée Rorke titled “Beware of crying ‘criminal’ with pics”. It is explained that a hefty fine or imprisonment is applicable for publishing a picture of any perceived criminal before such person has appeared before a court of law.

Yet on page 7 of the same paper you published a photo taken from video footage of three women with a small girl walking away from a restaurant. In the article “Teaching tiny tots to steal” by Esmé Erasmus, it is alleged that they were criminally involved in the theft of a handbag at the restaurant.

Seeing that no suspects had been arrested at the time of publication, none of the people in the photo that you placed could have appeared before a court of law. That, according to Desirée Rorke’s article, puts you in a state of contravention of the SA Police Service Act, which prohibits the publication of such photos.

Please, in your next publication, let your readers know whether you have reported yourself to the police in this matter or whether they must do it. We as readers look forward to your response.

Iemand het die kaartjie voortydig namens my oopgemaak. Die poskantoor het darem die koevert weer netjies verseël voordat dit in my posbus geplaas is. ’n Vorige keer het ek kaartjies van die Vereniging van Mond- en Voetskilders bestel. Die pakkie is ook oopgemaak en die inhoud het makeer.

Stad straf mense wat gespaar het In reaksie op F. Swan se brief in TygerBurger van 5 Julie, “Residents being milked for money.”

Ek stem 100% saam. Die Stad Kaapstad is desperaat om geld op vals maniere in die hande te kry en lewer nie ’n teenprestasie daarvoor nie.

In ’n skrywe van die Stad kry ek onlangs die volgende e-pos: The Lifeline Tariff does not exist as a reward for more conservative electricity consumption. It is there to assist vulnerable customers in accessing electricity.

Volgens hulle was die Lifeline ingebring om die armer mense te help. Volgens my ’n leuen, want voor 1994

moes almal vir al hul krag betaal het. Met die ANC se oorname is vir almal gratis water en elektrisiteit beloof.

Met die realiteit dat daar nie so iets soos gratis water en elektrisiteit is nie, was die perk van 6 kl se water en 50 kW vir elke huishouding ingestel – nie net vir die armes nie. Verder brei hulle uit hoe mense wat dit kon bekostig, gasstowe en sonpaneelgeisers installeer het. Dit, my liewe Stad Kaapstad, was gedoen weens die swak bestuur van Eskom en die grootmaatverspreiders, onder meer die Stad Kaapstad, wat beurtkrag ingestel het. Selfs die Stad het ons gebombardeer met pamflette hoe om krag te spaar – kry vir jou ’n sonpaneelgeiser, kry ’n gasstoof, sit ten duurste LED-gloeilampe in, sit af jou ligte, jou TV, enigiets wat krag gebruik. Vanjaar is die tema: stort kort, spoel jou toilet met stortwater of reënwater en moenie onnodig spoel nie, oes reënwater, moenie jou tuin natlei nie, was net jou klere een keer ’n week, draai die kraan toe as jy tande borsel, maak druppende krane reg, ens.

Stad Kaapstad, ons het geluister. Ons het kostes aangegaan om julle te help.

Ons het verlede jaar vir julle krag gespaar, vanjaar spaar ons water op jul versoek. Moet nie ons intelligensie onderskat nie. Lifeline Tariff was ons reg om te kry, net soos dit die reg is van vulnerable customers.

Kaapstad straf nou die mense wat die meeste gedoen het om water en elektriese verbruik afwaarts te bring. ’n Veel beter stelsel sou wees om mense te beloon wat hul samewerking gee. Ongelukkig het hulle verkies om juis dié mense te straf.

Stad Kaapstad moet nou, soos ons, ook aanpas om met minder geld klaar te kom.

olle wat moles maak in die noordelike voorstede is nie nou ’n skielike plaag nie, sê ’n molkenner.

“Molle leef gewoonlik dwarsdeur die jaar onder die grond, maar ons sien hulle nou meer omdat dit gereeld reën en dit daarom makliker vir hulle is om te grou,” sê dr. Gary Bronner van die departement van klein soogdiernavorsing by die Universiteit van Kaapstad.

“Molaktiwiteit sal weer afplat teen die lente wanneer dit droër is.”

Een leser van Stellenberg beweer daar is ’n molplaag en sê die tonnels is nie net gevaarlik nie, maar ook onooglik.

Bronner meen molle kry swaar met die Kaapse droogte en met die reën het hulle met volle vaart na die oppervlak toe gekom.

Blanche de Vries, woordvoerder van Cape Nature, stem saam. “Ons is nie bewus van ’n toename in bevolkingsgetalle nie, maar indien daar is, kon die reën en droogte ’n moontlike impak gehad het.”

Boonop het molle ’n wye area waarin hul tonnels strek, sê Bronner. Daarom lyk dit dikwels of daar baie molle is, maar is dit dan net een.

Gevra hoe om van molle ontslae te raak, het hy geantwoord: “As ek dit geweet het, sou ek ’n ryk man gewees het.”

Molle is baie geheg aan hul omgewing, sê hy. “As jy een vang en relatief naby aan jou huis loslaat, sal hy terugkom. Daar is so baie molle in die Kaap dat daar net ander sal intrek as ’n mol in jou tuin nie terugkom nie.

“Die maklikste is om te leer om met hulle saam te leef,” meen Bronner.

De Vries sê hoewel molle ongeleë kan wees, het hulle ’n rol in die ekostelsel en help hulle om grond gesond te hou.

“Etiese huisgemaakte oplossings word aangemoedig,” maan sy.

Daar is talle maniere om molle te vang, maar om hulle in ’n ander plek te plaas, het sy eie ekologiese gevolge, sê Bronner.

Dit is egter beter as om hulle dood te maak.

Baie van die metodes om die diere uit te wis, is oneties en amper barbaars. “Dit is altyd maar net ’n kortterymynoplossing,” sê hy.

Daar is twee hoofsoorte molle in die Kaap en albei het verskillende gedragspatrone (en maniere om hulle te vang).

Tandmolle (mole rats) is knaagdiere en maak kleiner molshope as kruipmolle (golden moles), hoewel hulle groter diere is.

Kruipmolle wat net in Sub-Sahara Afrika voorkom, het nie tande nie.

Bronner sê kruipmolle kan nie skade aan ondergrondse drade berokken nie, maar tandmolle kan deur plastiekpype knaag.

Daarom is hulle dikwels vir die verwoesting van besproeiingspype verantwoordelik.

Céline to set the stage alight ESMÉ ERASMUS

ultitalented young Durbanville singer, Céline, is finally ready to release her new single “Heart for Hire” following the success of her first two singles.

Céline de Bruyn (21), who performs under her first name, will launch her new single at Die Boer in Durbanville on Wednesday 19 July from 20:30. She will be giving away free download vouchers.

“Originally it started out as an adult contemporary song with a slight jazz feel to it.

I kept it as part of my repertoire and only in November 2016 did I decide to take it further and record it as a single,” she says.

“My producer, Riaan Steyn from Traxtudio, and I made the creative decision to give the song more of a pop feel,” she says.

An incredible achievement for this young songstress is that her first single, “Blackjack”, was at number one on Coastal Radio for three weeks in a row in April this year.

It is currently still in the top five on Coastal Radio. She released her second single, “Infatuation”, in 2016.

What’s On | Wat’s Waar V Comedy stalwart, Barry Hilton, will be bringing the laughs on 12 July at 20:30 at Die Boer Theatre Restaurant in Durbanville.

Céline is not only a singer and songwriter, but also a musician and actress. She plays the guitar, drums, piano and bass guitar, attending music classes at Jamrock Music School in Brackenfell.

Her musical genre can be described as a blend of pop, rock and blues with some elements of adult contemporary.

She has been performing since she was 11 years old and her goal is to be a successful international recording artist and actress.

She likes to create unique-sounding songs that are meaningful, catchy and interesting to listen to and which incorporate elements from different genres – influenced by artists and bands such as Jessie J, Joan Jett, Alanis Morisette, 4 Non-Blondes, Ellie Goulding, Tegan and Sara, Janis Joplin, Lady Gaga and Tori Kelly.

Céline, who matriculated at Stellenberg High School, is currently a third-year student in Performing Arts at The Stage Performing Arts Academy in Bellville.

She signed a publishing contract with Traxtudio International in 2015 and more recently an Artiste Representation Agreement with P’ayeye Entertainment.

A Grade 6 learner from Durbanville, Mia Dippenaar, is a rising star in the world of drama.

Mia is once again the lead actress in a production by Stagecraft Drama Studio at the Artscape Theatre – this time as Noddy in the ever-popular production of More Adventures of Noddy.

More Adventures of Noddy is presented daily until 15 July (except on Sundays) from 10:30 in the foyer of the Artscape Theatre.

In April this year Mia also played the lead role in the Stagecraft Drama Studio production of Peter Rabbit.

Mia, a learner at Curro Independent School in Durbanville, also played the role of Annie in her school’s production of Annie in 2015.

After auditioning for Pieter Toerien’s production of Annie in 2016, Mia won the role of Duffy. This show ran from December last year until early January this year.

Mia was also the category winner in sing-

ing for girls aged 10 years at the Tygerberg Eisteddfod last year, although she is not taking any lessons in singing or drama.

She is the eldest of three sisters. According to her mother, Marguerite Dippenaar, she has a natural talent for singing and drama.

“When we look at all our home videos, 90% of them are about some or other concert. The three sisters packed out chairs for the guests and we had to sit and watch,” she says.

More Adventures of Noddy, written by Enid Blyton and adapted by acclaimed children’s dramatist David Wood, is directed by Cheryl Abromowitz and Caryn Reznik.

estern Province junior Deon Germishuys secured his chance to compete for a spot in the prestigious North and South Junior Championships in the USA next year when he won the first u.19 A-division title in the Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series last week.

Ranked eighth in the country, the former Nomads SA Boys u.19 Stroke Play champion came into the inaugural tournament of the 18-event junior golf development initiative between Bridge Fund Managers and GolfRSA as the pre-tournament favourite.

And Germishuys lived up to his billing at the Royal Cape Golf Club when he edged out Tristan Galant from King David Mowbray Golf Club by three shots for victory.

“I knew the spotlight was on me, but I tried not to think about it once we teed off,” said the 17-year-old Strand golfer.

“I just had one goal: to win the tournament. To have the chance to compete for two spots in the North and South Junior at Pinehurst is a huge opportunity and I definitely want a shot at it.

Germishuys erased a bogey at the second with back-to-back birdies at five and six and he was three under par through the turn under an eagle at the par five seventh. He birdied 11 to open up a two-shot lead over Thomas Bezuidenhout from Durbanville Golf Club and countered a bogey at 17 with a bird-

ie finish for a winning round of four-underpar 68.

“This was such a fantastic way to start the rest of the season after a two-month break,” he said.

“Now I’m also nicely warmed up for the start of the Sunshine Tour Junior Series. I booked my spot in the national final and I am taking some confidence to Fancourt for the start of the Dimension Data Junior Open on Wednesday.”

South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) player Galant took second with a 71, while Gheran Hatting from Bellville Golf Club and Bezuidenhout shared third on one over 73.

Meanwhile Christopher Gutuza edged out Craig Jacobs in a tightly-fought contest for the B-division title. Gutuza and the SAGDB player from Bellville Golf Club both posted rounds of 84 to tie for the lead, but Gutuza from Westlake took the honours in a countout over the last nine holes.

There were also plenty of smiles from the u.13 winners. Local junior Caden Chuang birdied the closing hole on his home course for a 75 to defeat Jamie Rickets from Durbanville Golf Club in the A-division.

Kimon Botoulas from King David Mowbray edged out SAGDB player Mitch Phegeland for the B-division Individual Stableford title on a winning total of 44 points.

In afdeling C het Goodwood (36-26 t Young Stars) en Scottsdene (50-10 t Raithby Universals) oorwinnings beklink. Die komende naweek het Tygerberg (t Belhar) en Durbell (t Primrose) tuiswedstryde, terwyl Bellville (t Paarl) en Kuilsrivier (t Rangers) wegwedstryde het.

REPS MMA in Bellville se juniors het onlangs aan die Cape Classics deelgeneem. Juan Langrotia (hulpafrigter) is hier by die juniors wat goed vertoon het. Twee Tygerbergse leerders, Stephan Joubert (Jan Kriel-skool) en Jacquin Isaacs (Westcliff-vaardigheidskool), is ná afloop van verlede week se nasionale LSOB-Cravenweek ingesluit in die Suid-Afrikaanse LSOB-span wat die komende week in Johannesburg aan die nasionale Akademieweek vir o.18-spanne gaan deelneem.

Die WP se enigste nederlaag was teen die uiteindelike “kampioenspan” , die Oos-Gautengse Valke, wat dit naelskraap met 15-14 deurgetrek het. Ondanks hierdie nederlaag het die WP bewys gelewer dat hy steeds onder die drie voorste spanne is.

Establishing its place among the continent’s most iconic races, as the only event in Africa to receive IAAF Gold Label recognition, the annual road-running festival in the Mother City has made a real impact on runners across the continent since it was relaunched in 2014.

Over the past few years, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has assisted several Afri-

can and local athletes by providing a springboard for their international careers. Several runners have received lucrative offers to participate in prestigious international races, based on their performance in the local event: •After winning the 2014 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, Ethiopian athlete Meseret Mengistu went on to win the Paris Marathon the following year.

•Local Western Province runner, Lungile Gongqa’s, breakthrough performance occurred at the 2015 edition of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, where he finished second behind winner Shadrack Kemboi from Kenya in a time of 2:11:59, allowing him to quali-

fy for the Rio Olympics in 2016. More recently he won the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon.

•Asefa Negewo from Ethiopia, who won last year’s Sanlam Cape Town Marathon in a Gold Label time of 2:08:41 (the fastest marathon ever run on a standard course on SA soil) went on to finish seventh in the London Marathon at the end of April.

•Motlokoa Nkhabutlane from Lesotho, who came fourth in the Cape Town Marathon last year, finished ninth in the recent Paris Marathon in a gold label time.

Having received IAAF Gold Label accreditation this year, after being promoted from Silver Label status, the race will offer an even bigger boost to the elite field, which

gives local athletes the chance to compete in an elite international marathon on home soil.

The four-day festival starts with the AIMS Africa Conference and the opening day of the expo on 14 September, and will conclude with the road-running contests over various distances on Sunday 17 September.

The classic Olympian 42.2km marathon takes centre stage on the Sunday, following a 10km Peace Run in the morning, and two Peace Trail Runs (22km and 12km) and a 4.2km Fun Run/Walk on the Saturday.

oelwagters word nie gewoonlik as speler van die toernooi aangewys nie, maar Renaldo Leaner van Elsiesrivier, doelwagter van die PSL-klub Ajax Cape Town, het in die Tebrogen-toernooi – een van twee toernooie waaraan hy in Nederland deelgeneem het – dié titel verwerf.

Hy en twee van sy Ajax-spanmaats, Luthando Mateza (middelskakel) en Tasriq Matthews (vleuel), is ook in die Uitgeest-toernooi in die Dream Team opgeneem.

“Dit is elke sokkerspeler se droom om oorsee te gaan speel, en dit was my tweede oorsese toer. Klubspanne van oraloor in die wêreld het aan die twee toernooi deelgeneem, en ons het in die halfeindstryd teen Atletico Maneiro van Brasilië met 1-2 verloor,” het Renaldo gesê.

“By sommige klubs is daar meer as twee aanspraakmakers in ’n posisie en jy sal moet uithaal en wys dat jy die beste persoon vir daai posisie is,” het hy gesê.

Sy plaaslike held is die oud-Kapenaar Moeneeb Josephs, ook bekend as “Slimkat”, doelwagter van Orlando Pirates.

“Ek bewonder hom omdat hy ook van die Kaap is en ek wil graag soos hy speel. Ek bewonder ook vir Manuel Neuer, doelwagter van Bayern Munich, en wil nou nie eintlik erken dat ek albei dophou om te kyk waar ek my spel as doelwagter kan verbeter nie,” skerts Renaldo.

Daarna is hy na die sokkerklub Central, ook in Elsiesrivier, voordat hy by Ajax Cape Town aangesluit het. “By Ajax Cape Town het ek eers in die o.19-Vodacomkompetisie gespeel, wat nou die Motsepe-kompetisie genoem word. Daarna het ek tot nou in die Multichoice Diski-kompetisie deelgeneem, voordat ek saam met die span Nederland toe is. By die Tebrogen-toernooi het ek net ses doele afgestaan en is as die speler van die toernooi aangewys. Ek het in die toernooi waardevolle ervaring opgedoen, wat ek nou in ons plaaslike kompetisie kan toepas,” het Renaldo gesê.

Hy is ’n tweedejaarstudent aan die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland en wissel sy tyd af tussen sy studies en sy sokker by Ajax Cape Town. “Ek het nie baie tyd vir stokperdjies nie, want my studies en die sokker hou my heeltyds besig. Wanneer ek wel tyd kry om te ontspan, speel ek Fifa 2017. Ek wil graag

my studies voltooi en daarna al my aandag aan my sokker gee,” het hy gesê.

Dat hy oor goeie sportgene beskik, is daar nie twyfel nie. Sy pa, Trevor, was ook ’n sokkerspeler en het vir die destydse sokkerklub Arcadians in Elsiesrivier uitgedraf.

Sy ma, Sandra, ’n nooi Matthee, het netbal gespeel en het WP-kleure verwerf. “Ek is gebore en getoë in Elsiesrivier en het my laerskoolloopbaan by die Laerskool Elsbury in Matroosfontein begin en was by die Hoërskool Elsiesrivier in Haltweg op hoërskool tot matriek. My raad aan jong spelers is dat jy nooit jou droom moet opgee nie. Jy weet nie wat die toekoms vir jou inhou nie en jy moet bereid wees om baie dinge op te offer om jou droom te bereik,” het Renaldo gesê.

Die voormalige doelwagter van Ajax Cape Town, Hans Vonk, is terug en Renaldo leer ook die fynere kunsies van doelwagters by hom.
