Tech injection to heal long wait at clinics Clinics may soon be receiving a technology injection, as the City of Cape Town commits several million rand to create two modernisation projects.

The City’s Health Department is investigating an electronic booking system for appointments at clinics. A similar investigation into digital patient records is underway.

These are the first steps in a much bigger technological makeover envisioned for the department. R5m has been budgeted to facilitate the process, says JP Smith, Mayco member for safety, security and social services.

“The investment being made with this budget allows us to work towards changing the norm and will allow patients the option of booking an appointment with a healthcare professional instead of clinics running solely on a first-come-first-served model. Of course, emergency cases will continue to be attended to on arrival,” he says.

In the past year, an initiative in partnership with UWC is seeing more and more facilities using appointment times spread throughout the day.

“Also, patient files are currently kept and updated manually and stored at the clinics.

The time and cost saving associated with storing and updating patient files electronically would be considerable,” says Smith.

Three sisters make clean sweep at national awards T

he three sister publications at WP Media – TygerBurger, People’s Post and City Vision, once again ranked among the very best in the country at the annual Forum for Community Journalists’ (FCJ) Excellence Awards held on Friday night.

In the category for Best Corporate-owned Free Newspaper it was TygerBurger that took top honours – again!

Our sister People’s Post came in second, and the third place went to Cape Community Newspapers’ Tabletalk.

D’ville house robberies on the rise

T

he parking lot of the Brackenfell Police Station has become the new hotspot for vagrants to sleep in, the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement Unit reported at the local subcouncil meeting last week.

In a recent operation by this unit, as many as 12 vagrants along with their meagre belongings were removed from the area around the parking lot.

It is believed that these vagrants moved to the police station after Law Enforcement had removed them from other hotspot areas around town earlier in the year.

At the subcouncil meeting a spokesperson from Law Enforcement told ward councillors that they receive numerous complaints about lawlessness among the vagrants.

“They urinate in public, mess up the open spaces, drink alcohol in public and often get rowdy,” the spokesperson said during the subcouncil meeting.

“The major problems we as nearby residents have are the stench in the area and the mess the vagrants leave behind on a daily basis. They urinate against the wall, and the condition in which they leave the parking lot is generally appalling and unhygienic,” said a nearby resident who wished to remain anonymous.

Law Enforcement confirmed this complaint and stated that they continuously have to remove the vagrants from the police station parking lot.

An informed source told TygerBurger that the Brackenfell Police Station is a popular spot for vagrants who have in the past received blankets and food from staff at the police station.

Captain Erica Crous, spokesperson for the Brackenfell police, says they are aware of the vagrants loitering and sleeping in the said parking area.

“We can confirm that the matter is being addressed jointly by the police and the City’s Law Enforcement,” she says.

She adds that the police have no official record suggesting any criminal behaviour by the vagrants in question.

Brackenfell CPF first lodged a complaint in this regard in 2015, says chairman Sean McCleland.

“It is of great concern to us and we have addressed it with the station commander on many occasions. It is an eyesore, and people visiting the police station do feel

unsafe.

“The feedback that we get is simply that the vagrants come to the police station seeking safety and that the CPF needs to sympathise with them,” says McCleland.

McCleland adds that each of the vagrants sleeping at the station has been profiled by police.

“The fact that the property does not belong to the police, but to the provincial traffic department, compounds the problem, in that the police can’t do much about it,” he says Law Enforcement confirmed that it has handed the complaint over to the province for action.

McCleland says there is not much more the CPF or the police can do. “Brackenfell does not have its own shelter for the homeless, as Kraaifontein and Bellville do, leaving the vagrants with no safe place to go at night” says McCleland.

House robberies in Durbanville are on the increase, with two incidents reported last week in Racecourse and Eversdal.

Last Thursday at about 11:00 five men entered a home in Basson Street in Racecourse.

They forced open the security gate and door to gain entry.

Three of the men were armed with firearms. According to Captain Marchell Rhode, spokesperson for the Durbanville police, they locked the domestic worker in the toilet and ransacked the house.

They found the safe and removed three firearms from it. They also took the television set, Rhode said.

The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle.

No arrests have been made.

Last Monday at 01:30 a house robbery occurred in St Luke Street, Eversdal.

The homeowner woke up from a loud noise and found two men in her bedroom.

They were armed with knives.

“They tied the woman’s hands with telephone cables. They then took her to the bedroom where her husband was sleeping and also tied him up with cables,” Rhode said.

“The couple were sprayed with pepper spray and the robbers demanded the keys to the safe in the main bedroom.

“The robbers took a shotgun and a .303 rifle with rounds that were in the safe. They also took cellphones, a laptop, a flat-screen television and cash,” he said.

The robbers gained entry to the house by forcing open a window and burglar bars in a spare bedroom.

They were wearing beanies, Rhode said.

Nobody has been arrested as yet.

n Junie het die Brackenfell-biblioteek ’n verskeidenheid vierings gehou om die gebou se 30ste bestaansjaar te gedenk.

“Brackenfell se dorpsbiblioteek is in 1979 in ’n kleinerige lokaal begin, wat deel was van die munisipale gebou.

“Dit was gou duidelik dat daar ’n behoefte aan ’n groter gebou is,” sê Sunell Lötter, huidige bibliotekaresse.

Die huidige gebou is op 3 Junie 1987 deur Gene Louw, destydse administrateur van die Kaapland, geopen.

“Sedertdien is daar al twee keer aan die bestaande gebou aangebou en steeds groei die gebruik van die biblioteek jaarliks,” sê sy.

Hettie Roux is in 1979 as die eerste hoofbibliotekaresse aangestel en sy het die pos beklee tot in 1998, waarna sy deur Estelle Balie en ’n paar jaar later deur Lötter opgevolg is.

Vandag is die Brackenfell-biblioteek die openbare biblioteek met die hoogste sirkulasie van items in Kaapstad en ook in die

Wes-Kaap.

Meer as 600 000 items is in die vorige jaar uitgeleen en in ’n besige maand hanteer die 18 personeellede dikwels tot sowat 56 000 items.

Die hoogtepunt van die maand se vierings was ’n geleentheid op Saterdag 24 Junie toe al die personeel wat in die verlede deel was van die biblioteek, na ’n reünie genooi is.

Die nagenoeg 50 oud-kollegas het van so ver as Groot-Brakrivier en Hermanus gekom om die geleentheid by te woon.

Vier van die gewese personeellede is ook gepubliseerde skrywers – Dalena Vollgraaff het die enigste boek oor Brackenfell se geskiedenis, Brackenfell ... van toeka tot nou, geskryf en Dirna Ackermann is alombekend vir ’n paar dosyn liefdesverhale wat daagliks by biblioteke landwyd uitgeneem word.

Eugene Vermeulen, wat skryf onder die naam Eugene Black, en Truida Heymann is ook twee gewese personeellede wie se boeke gereeld gelees word.

Die personeel wat 30 jaar gelede in 1987 na die bestaande gebou getrek het, is (van links) Fanny le Roux, Lien Koegelenberg, Hettie Roux en Elfriede Theron.

Hierdie personeel het deur die jare saam met die eerste bibliotekaresse, Hettie Roux (in die middelste ry, derde van links), tot haar aftrede in 1998 gewerk.

Caren Brynard, wyksraadslid, sê die Stad ondervind tans ’n groot probleem met haweloses wat onwettig op die stuk grond plak.

“Omdat die haweloses nou begin om strukture op te rig op die padreserwe, kom dit neer op onwettige grondbesetting,” sê sy.

Omdat daar geen dienste op die grond is nie, is omstandighede haglik.

Die grond behoort gedeeltelik aan Sanral, die Stad Kaapstad en die provinsie.

“Inwoners voel al meer magteloos en frustrasie loop hoog, want hulle moet net al hoe meer geld opdok om hulself en hul besittings te beveilig, terwyl daar in die meeste gevalle min hulp is om misdadigers vas te trek,” sê Brynard.

Volgens Brynard kom daar weinig van enige van die inbraaksake wat gemaak word.

“Selfs moontlike bewysstukke wat hier gevind word, word afgemaak as iets wat aan enigiemand kan behoort en word sommer net geïgnoreer,” sê hy.

Volgens hom behoort die gebied vir ’n onbepaalde tyd op ’n weeklikse of selfs daaglikse basis gepatrolleer te word om te verseker die haweloses kom nie terug nie.

Tydens Woensdag se subraadsvergadering het Brynard versoek dat wetstoepassers die gebied meer gereeld inspekteer.

Operasies vind tans elke drie maande hier plaas.

“So kan ons aanhou om die haweloses te skuif en hulle by maatskaplike programme te integreer, maar in die meeste van die gevalle trek hulle weer na ’n tyd terug omdat hulle die lewenswyse verkies. Dit maak dit baie moeilik om die kwessie permanent aan te spreek.”

Selfs kinders leef hier in haglike omstandighede.

onderde mense het Saterdag Living Network-krisissentrum se jaarlikse vroue-oggend bygewoon.

Vanjaar het Dieter Voigt as seremoniemeester opgetree en Aletté Winckler as die gasspreker.

Die krisissentrum, wat vanuit ’n kantoor by die NG kerk Vredelust in Boston bedryf word, se hoofdoelwit is om ander se nood te verlig.

“Dit maak nie saak watter nood iemand het of waar hulle bly nie,” verduidelik Louise Spies, bestuurder van die sentrum.

Die sentrum voorsien eers in mense se basiese behoeftes en doen dan ’n assessering om hulle na die regte kundiges in die gebied te verwys.

Spies het vanjaar 230 mense tussen Januarie en Mei gekonsulteer.

“Ons het ’n groot behuisingsnood vir mense,” het Voigt by die geleentheid gesê.

“Daar is dwelm- en alkoholmisbruikprobleme en mense het geen kos of klere nie.”

Die krisissentrum help ook organisasies wat skenkings wil maak om by diegene uit te kom wat dit benodig.

So is ’n verkragtingsentrum, ’n nagskuiling en talle ander organisasies vanjaar met hul behoeftes gehelp. Die sentrum het tans ’n groot behoefte aan tweedehandse klere, komberse en nie-bederfbare voedsel.

Projek wat ’n vrou van Durbanville begin het om die plantegroei in Knysna ná die vernietigende brande te help hervestig, het behoorlik vlam gevat.

Chanel du Plooy het voorverlede Donderdag op haar WhatsApp-groepe genoem sy wil plante en bome insamel om te help om die plantegroei in Knysna te hervestig.

Voor sy haar oë kon uitvee, het haar Go Green Knysna-idee só gegroei dat sy ’n hele span vrywilligers moes kry om haar te help.

Binne ’n uur het Marcus Pawson, hoof van omgewingsake by Afriforum, en Chris Boshoff, omgewingsake-koördineerder by Afriforum, haar gekontak.

“Hulle gaan die donasies van die publiek inneem en ook help met vervoerkoste van plante van Kaapstad na Knysna. Hulle gaan ook help met die bemarking,” vertel sy.

“Dit het so vinnig versprei dat my foon tot laataand besig was met mense wat betrokke wou raak. Dit gaan woes met die projek. Ek het regtig nie gedink dit gaan so groot gaan nie,” het sy gesê.

Sy het ook kontak gemaak met mense wat die wilde diere in Knysna voer en almal was dadelik vuur en vlam om haar te help.

“Knysna, bekend vir sy immergroen woude, is ’n baie bekende deel van die Tuinroete. Net swart en grys, kaal woude het oorgebly. Ek en my span wil graag die groen terugplaas as simboliese kleur van vrede en rustigheid,” sê sy.

Hulle wil die eerste paar bome in September aanplant in samewerking met die Knysna-munisipaliteit. Hulle wil ook graag die

publiek by die projek betrek en daarvan deelmaak om die bome te gaan aanplant.

“Ons wil hiermee ’n verskil maak en die mense van Knysna weer hoop gee,” sê sy.

Toe volg die radio-onderhoude op onder meer Pretoria FM en RSG. Kwekerye van oraloor het haar gekontak en van afslag op plante aangebied tot hulp en opleiding aangebied met die plant van die plante en bome.

Ander het kompos, potgrond en ander materiaal belowe.

Atlete van ’n atletiekklub wat in Julie op Knysna aan ’n marathon deelneem, het ook aangebied om te help.

Kenners van inheemse bome het ook advies aangebied.

“Die projek is beslis lang termyn en ons gaan kyk of ons ook skole betrokke kan kry,” sê Du Plooy.

Sy het gevra dat skole hulle gewone kleredae hou ten bate van haar Go Green Knysna-projek.

“Ons vra dat elke skool R5 sal vra vir elke leerder om groen aan te trek op Lentedag, 1 September, vanjaar,” vra sy.

Die doel van die kompetisie is om te kyk watter skool die meeste geld sal insamel.

Die wenskool se geld sal gebruik word om ’n groot boom aan te koop. Dié boom sal in Knysna geplant word en ’n bronsplaatjie sal opgerig word met die skool se naam daarop.

Dié kompetisie sluit op 8 September.

THINKING OUT LOUD

It’s just ‘bye’ for now; the legacy lives on I don’t like to complain, but when I want to complain, I will complain.

My complaint is against the person who decided that 60 years old puts me over the hill.

Yours truly turned 60 earlier this month and is now forced to go into retirement.

But don’t give up on me just yet!

Jokes aside, it’s been an exciting time, starting at the old Cape Herald in the early 1980s, seeing the birth of The Plainsman that led to Community Newspapers and then being at The Argus Tonight where my passion for the arts and culture could find an outlet.

A journey that started on the dusty streets of Diep River, but with a love for reading.

I was never trained as a journalist, but actually as a sort of electrician – but don’t tell anybody.

A lot has changed since I started this journey and there is just not enough space to go into A journey detail about it all, but I was glad to be that started part of writing apartheid, on the dusty against seeing the birth of the new South streets of Africa, and in later Diep River but years trying to make a difference with a love for through my work here at TygerBurger reading ... and People’s Post.

Circumstances led – Gary van Dyk to me coming here and I am thankful for being given the opportunity to work in the communities where I was assigned.

Many people have negative perceptions of many of the areas where I have worked, but my answer to them is that we tend to overlook the positive for the negative. Crime is there; it’s always been there, but amidst that I have loved showing the world that there are positive people out there trying to make a difference.

Through my love for music I was privileged to be part of two projects that highlight the good that exists in our disadvantaged communities. The first is the Delft Big Band. I watched with some pride how these young musicians grew into the professional group they are today. And then there’s the Jazz Yard Academy in Bonteheuwel. It started with one man who wanted to make a difference. And it is making a major difference – in so many young lives that could have been led astray. My job here is done. – Gary van Dyk

Skoonmaker is ’n inspirasie Soms sien ’n mens iets raak en en jy gaan aan soos normaal. Dan sien jy wéér dié iets raak en dit bly jou by, want dit raak jou op ’n vreemde manier aan.

Hier in Brackenfell is ’n onbaatsugtige man, Willie Smit (hoop dit is die regte van). Hy maak Brackenfellboulevard se sypaadjies op sy eie inisiatief baie netjies.

Hy het begin naby Checkers by die Boulevard-sentrum en is al baie naby aan Bottelaryweg.

Ek sien gereeld hoe hy met sy graaf van die gras en onkruid op sypaadjies ontslae raak.

Wanneer hy klaar is, lyk alles skoon en netjies.

Vandag het ek by hom stilgehou en gesê ek waardeer wat hy doen. Sy antwoord was so treffend. Hy’t gesê hy is geseënd met goeie gesondheid en is so dankbaar daarvoor. Daarom wil hy graag iets teruggee en dit is sy manier om dít te doen.

Ek hoop die parke-afdeling sien ook sy mooi gebaar raak en hou sy goeie werk in stand.

Baie dankie, Willie, ons waardeer dit en ek glo baie ander mense sien dit ook raak. Jy is voorwaar ’n inspirasie vir baie.

Word wyke deur spoke beheer?

Dit is absoluut belangrik dat gemeenskapslede weet wie hul wyksraadslede is sodat daar ’n “kommunikasielyn” gevorm kan word tussen die gemeenskappe en die munisipaliteite. Wyksraadslede se rol is om gereelde terugvoering aan die gemeenskap te

gee oor belangrike kwessies sodat die lede van die gemeenskap bewus kan wees van hierdie kwessies.

Tans sit ons met wyksraadslede wat nie van hulle laat hoor nie; die gemeenskappe weet ook nie wie hulle is nie.

Daar is ook deesdae die neiging dat wyksraadslede nie antwoord op oproepe en e-posse nie. Daar is wyksraadslede van wie ’n mens nog nooit gehoor het nie. So ek vra dus nou, wie beheer ons wyke? Spoke?

All are prisoners of crime epidemic I am a prisoner in my own home.

Home is not just the comfortable walls of my father’s house – it is my neighbourhood too. Living in fear is the new order of the day. A decade ago, when I arrived in Kuils River, the streets were much safer – not to mention one’s home. It’s so worrisome how crime has become a culture and an embraced norm. Gone are the days of children enjoying their time at the park; teenage girls going to the shops and boys enjoying a soccer game on the field. We all need to look over our shoulders now. Kuils River used to be a beautiful area, boasting colourful gardens all year round, compared to the households now converted into mini-prisons or semi-security compartments patrolled by armed security response vehicles 24/7. This is evident when one takes a walk along Van Riebeek Main Road, Station Road, Amandel or Kloof roads – residents have opted for high-tech gadgets, security gates and high walls.

I guess in South Africa we are all prisoners, but the only difference is the “level” of prison one is in. I am one of the people who stay at home with the alarm enabled, all because of crime. Crime knows no race or age; we must all rise up in unity against this devilish epidemic.

Weed out these ludicrous laws Not being a smoker of cannabis, or anything else for that matter, I still find South Africa’s laws surrounding cannabis to be archaic.

In Canada, where I resided in the province of British Columbia for 15 years, it has been legalised; in various US states it has also been legalised.

This is Africa – what is this government’s problem with falling in line with the Western world, and what ridiculous reason do they have for these ridiculous laws?

Does Law Enforcement not have anything better to do than prosecute for cannabis possession? I’m sure they do.

How about all those farm murders and all the crime?

The government departments appealing the legalisation must worry about law and order in this country and stop bothering peaceful people who like to smoke or grow their own weed.

Piqued at lack of peak hour control What is our useless traffic department going to do about the lawlessness of taxi drivers?

Where are the traffic cops during peak hour traffic in the mornings and evenings when taxi drivers put our lives at risk with their bad driving, or do the traffic laws not apply to them? Must we now just accept this lawlessness? What is the purpose of having a traffic department if they don’t do their duty?

“Die idee is nie om die wiel nogmaals uit te vind nie,” sê prof. Dorothea van Zyl, uitvoerende direkteur van die inisiatief en stigter van die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) se Woordfees.

“Die TygerArea-kunsteprogram en Tygerfest wil graag alles wat reeds in die gebied gebeur belig en help bemark, maar dit ook aanvul met aanbiedings wat mense op allerlei maniere bewus sal maak van dié streek.”

Die idee vir TygerFest het in 2015 begin posvat toe prof.

Schwella het by die geleentheid gesê hulle het gevoel ’n stad kan nie net op sekerheid en skoonmaak fokus nie, maar ook kultuur.

Volgens Van Zyl het hulle gevoel daar word te min aandag gegee aan goeie gebeurtenisse wat reeds in die gebied plaasvind.

“Daar kon veral veel meer gewoeker word met al die kuns- en kultuurtalente, maar daar is ook besluit om dit te kombineer met entrepreneurskap en kunstepreneurskap,” vertel Van Zyl. Organiseerders sê die fees sluit aan by die werk wat die Groter Tygerberg-vennootskap (GTP) en die VRCID reeds in die area doen.

Om alles bymekaar te bring is Tygerfest in Maart vanjaar as ’n nie-winsgewende maatskappy geregistreer. Die maatskappy se werk bestaan uit die jaarprogram (met eie aanbiedings en bestaande aanbiedings in die gebied), asook die TygerArea-kunsteprogram en ’n klein jaarlikse fees.

Anroux Marais, Wes-Kaapse minister van kultuursake en sport, wat ook by die geselligheid was, het gesê haar departement ondersteun die projek ten volle.

“Kultuur het ’n manier om mense saam te bind,” het sy gesê.

Daar is reeds vanjaar ’n paar items om na uit te sien, onder meer ’n kuier-en-kunsveiling wat op 26 Julie by die SPL gehou gaan word. ’n Galakonsert gaan ook op 12 Augustus by die Hoërskool D.F. Malan plaasvind, waar ’n massakoor onder meer gaan optree.

Van Zyl sê hoewel hulle tans geld benodig, is hul idee om die program geleidelik selfvolhoubaar te maak.

Belangstellendes word uitgenooi om by te dra tot die sukses van die projek.

and Partners Inc. Attorneys collected money among their staff to support the Animal Anti-Cruelty League’s Blanket Drive initiative. They collected enough money to buy 37 storm blankets to keep the animals warm and snug this winter. Suzette Beukes (client relations) and Ade Nyongo (candidate attorney) delivered the blankets to the AACL. “There are plenty of cute puppies up for adoption and so desperately in need of a warm, loving home. With school holidays just around the corner, it is the perfect time to adopt an animal with the kids being home to train and take care of their new companion,” says Beukes. Keep your children active

T

he days are shorter and colder...winter has officially arrived. While it might be tempting to snuggle up on the couch with your children, cup of hot chocolate and rusks in hand, it is important to factor in some active time.

Exercise helps kids feel less stressed, have higher self-esteem, focus at school, sleep better and maintain a healthy weight. You’ve probably noticed too that parenting children who get enough exercise is easier than parenting those who don’t. Incentive enough?

But when it’s cold and dark outside, how do you get your children to exercise? “It’s simple,” says Lynne Arbuckle, primary school principal at Riverside College in Burgundy Estate. “Make exercise fun. If your children see you making an effort, they’re likely to buy into the idea too. Physical activ-

ity should be seen as an essential part of your child’s daily routine.”

‘Fun’, ‘exercise’ and ‘winter’ in the same sentence? Walk the dog; take breaks every hour and do jumping jacks. If you have a set of stairs, see who can walk upstairs backwards the fastest. Park in the furthest parking bay at the shopping centre so that you have to walk the distance to the entrance.

“Find a way to incorporate exercise into your normal daily activity; make it a part of your routine,” says Arbuckle. “Moderate activity increases brain activity and generates endorphins to help your children stay motivated and positive at school.”

So get up, get moving, get active! Remember: habits that are adopted during childhood and teenage years are likely to roll over into adulthood.

T

here’s a new twist to this year’s Trek4Mandela summit of Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for sanitary towels for thousands of marginalised schoolgirls in South Africa.

Chris Dippenaar (40) from Durbanville will accompany previous summit climber Richard Mabaso, chief executive officer of the Imbumba Foundation and founder of both the Caring4Girls and Trek4Mandela projects, and a group of about 30 other people on his first Kilimanjaro climb this year.

But it’s not going to be an ordinary trek...

Dippenaar plans to summit Kilimanjaro with a bicycle strapped to his back – and then ride it down. He is going to do this with Sibusiso Vilane from Johannesburg, the first black man to summit Mount Everest and who will also be summiting his 21st Kilimanjaro this year.

Mabaso and a dedicated band of like-minded philanthropists aim to reach their goal of supplying sanitary towels to two million schoolgirls by 2020.

Research has shown that girls from marginalised communities who cannot afford sanitary towels can miss up to 50 days of school every year due to menstrual challenges – decreasing their chances of ever using their learning to break out of the cycle of poverty, Dippenaar says.

He has three preteen daughters of his own, Mia (12), Inge (10) and Nina (8).

He wants to inspire children to follow their passion and show that the impossible is possible through “dreaming big, hard work and perseverance”.

An avid mountain biker, Chris regularly turns tourists’ heads as he trains in the gorges of Table Mountain with his bicycle of 11kg strapped to his backpack.

Since January he has been training in the Platteklip Gorge twice a week and every second month in the Drakensberg to prepare.

He thinks it’s a “travesty” that young girls from marginalised communities should miss school for not having something so many of their peers take for granted.

Dippenaar is an entrepreneur who began his career in retail sales at 16 years of age, making and then selling home-made ties out of the boot of his car to flea-market vendors.

As the group operations director of the Presidential Group he is taking a work sabbatical for four months to get super fit, raise funds and recalibrate what to do with his life going forward.

“I’m busy recalibrating a new direction for my life and want to connect with organisations that have a real heart for social initiatives – something that’s blended into their DNA,” he says.

“And, of course, tailoring it to involve cycling is the cherry on top of the cake for me.

Richard is an amazing and inspiring social entrepreneur and epitomises the values I hold dear,” he adds.

An optimist at heart, he says cycling down Kilimanjaro will be the ride of his life – and a sure way to beat mountain sickness by losing altitude as quickly as possible.

“A breathtaking way to do good, you could say,” he laughs.

The Trek4Mandela expedition sets off on their epic adventure on 12 July and will summit on Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July.

Chris, with the assistance of Biosport SA, will be presenting a night ride or walk at the Bloemendal Wine Estate outside Durbanville on Thursday 6 July from 19:00 to raise funds for Caring4Girls .

T

hree buddies from Kuils River who have been friends for over 20 years are attempting to address the water crisis with a device they have created and dubbed the “FlushBuddy”.

According to Wesley Miller, Trevor Maasdorp and Dylon Burgess their device, which is to be inserted into the cistern of the toilet, could potentially help save the City of Cape Town 40 to 60 million litres of water per day.

The device is based on the concept of placing a brick or bottle of water inside the cistern of a toilet in an effort to displace a certain amount of water.

Miller, however, conducted research on the brick method and found it to be unsustainable, as the brick would be prone to corrosion, dissolving and algae formation. “The algae would grow within the cistern causing various problems, such as a leaky toilet,” explains Miller.

The FlushBuddy, which is made of PVC plastic, aims to combat this problem by being coated in an antimicrobial substance that prevents any type of dissolution or algae growth on the bag. “The bag requires zero maintenance and a single unit can last between 10 and 20 years,” explains Maasdorp.

The entrepreneurs say that they developed the FlushBuddy with the City’s water crisis in mind. “We want to do our part by coming into the market to make some type of difference,” says Maasdorp.

How the FlushBuddy works is that it is filled with two litres of water and then fitted into the cistern of the toilet. When water reenters the system after a flush it will fill with two litres less due to the presence of the device.

“With over 1.6 million households in the City flushing multiple times a day we can

Maasdorp explains that with the FlushBuddy their objective was to develop a product that is easy, effective and affordable.

“The product requires no technical expertise to fit and no maintenance, making it easy to roll out in order to save water,” says Maasdorp.

Heart of Hope holds high tea JAY­DEE CYSTER @jaydeecyster

T

he Heart of Hope support group for parents of children with congenital heart defects hosted a high tea at the St Albans Church Hall in Goodwood in an effort to drum up support for founder Monique Kemp’s trip to Barcelona, Spain.

Kemp will be attending the 7th World Congress of Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery from 16 to 21 July where she will be presenting the work that she has been doing with the support group for the past five years.

“My work with Heart of Hope is focused mainly on raising awareness of the defect, as many people are not aware that it is the number one birth defect in the world, with one in 11 babies being born with it,” explains Kemp.

In attendance at the tea were doctors and nurses who work with children with congenital heart defects (CHDs) at Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital, supporters of Heart of Hope, as well as friends, family and colleagues of Kemp.

She started the support group after her son Daniel was born with CHD, a problem with the structure of the heart, in 2010.

“I found the journey with Daniel to be a very lonely one so I wanted to start a group where I could support parents who were going through the same situation so that they would not feel alone,” says Kemp.

She started the support group in 2012 and for the past five years has been working with mothers who have children with the defect.

There are currently six mothers, dubbed “Heart Moms”, who work together to support one another in the challenges they face as mothers of children with CHD.

“We are one another’s pillars of strength,” says Kemp.

Fellow Heart Mom, Candice Oliver, says that Kemp helps parents to understand what is a very traumatic experience.

“She supports parents by connecting them with other parents. Sometimes she just comes to sit with you to show her support,” says Oliver.

Oliver has known Kemp since the birth of her daughter three years ago. “We knew that our daughter would be born with CHD before her birth,” explains Oliver. “After my daughter was born, the nurses at the hospital contacted Monique to come and see us.

She took the time to explain the process to me in a non-medical way, simply speaking to me as one mother to another,” says Oliver.

Apart from running Heart of Hope, Kemp also holds down a full-time job at the Department of Human Settlements. She says that it is quite difficult balancing her time, but the work she is doing in terms of CHD is much needed.

Kemp says that she is excited to attend the congress in Barcelona to see what other CHD groups are doing.

Kemp says that she couldn’t have arranged the high tea without the assistance of the Heart Moms and the Greenmarket Square and Claremont branches, which provided the snacks for the afternoon.

Hansen sê die leerders is baie gelukkig om so ’n ervaring te kan beleef. “Ek is sommer jaloers dat ek nie kan saamgaan nie,” het sy gegrap, “en wees oop vir alle ervarings, asook die kultuur.”

Steeper penalties, jail time for water wasters Residents flouting water restrictions could face steeper penalties or even jail time.

This as the City of Cape Town has appealed to the courts for tougher action to help tackle non-compliance with Level 4 rules. City officials have negotiated that the maximum spot fine for a contravention be raised to R5000, rising to R10 000 or even a prison sentence for serious or repeat offences, explains Xanthea Limberg, Mayco member for informal settlements, water and waste services and energy.

Dam levels remain critically low, despite recent rains.

Level 4 water restrictions remain in place indefinitely and could be intensified if needed, Limberg cautions.

“All consumers must continue to use less than 100 litres per person per day in total, whether at work, home, school or elsewhere.”

he R270 000 gift of hearing a little girl recently received has been ripped away after part of her cochlear implant got lost and was presumably taken in a shoe store.

“She keeps on asking for it (the implant) and touching her ears,” says Millicent Worship, the grandmother of Leah Roodt (one year, 11 months).

“It’s a huge loss. She can’t hear at all now.

It’s such a terrible thing that happened.”

Leah, from Athlone, received a cochlear implant last year when radio station KFM heard of her plight and organised donations of around R270 000.

The tale led many to tears when Worship was heard crying and shouting for joy on air.

After her appointment the family went shopping at the Jordan Footwear Factory Shop.

When they left the store Leah’s grandfather realised the outside part of her cochlear implant was missing (the rest of the device is under her skin).

Thinking the device had simply fallen off, they rushed back inside where a fruitless search ensued.

Security footage shows a man with dreadlocks and dark clothing kicking the device to a spot where it was difficult to see.

He is then seen picking up the device and walking out of the store.

Mariette Nosworthy, an early interventionist at Carel du Toit Centre who works with Leah, says people easily mistake the cochlear implants for earphones.

“It is actually of no value to anyone else.

It is programmed specifically to her.”

Nosworthy says the loss is a tragedy, as Leah was able to learn speech because of the implant. She is completely deaf without it.

Leah is no stranger to difficult times. She was born with congenital rubella syndrome, also known as German measles.

Her mother, Carmelita, unknowingly contracted the condition while she was pregnant and it was passed on to Leah.

This illness affected her sight, hearing and heart. She had cataracts that were operated on and now wears contact lenses. She also has two holes in her heart.

UWC students get R12m bursary boost from ABSA The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has announced that it has received a R12m boost from ABSA for student bursaries.

Many of the students qualifying for the bursaries either have very limited financial resources or fall within the “missing middle” category of students whose parents or guardians can only afford to pay a portion of the required university fees.

Vodacom adding value with vast investments in network When Alberts Breed was appointed managing executive of Vodacom Western Cape Region two years ago, he prioritised four areas of the business: Ramping up investment on the network, leveraging the network investment, revamping customer care, and introducing fibre to the home and business.

Fast forward 24 months later and the Western Cape region has one of the best networks; it has made excellent progress in driving the uptake of data using the strength of its network and has implemented a customer care programme aimed at enhancing the customer experience. The region has also made solid inroads in rolling out fibre to homes and businesses in the province.

Says Alberts Breed, managing executive of Vodacom Western Cape region: “It has been a great and challenging 24

months. Having spent close to half a billion rand over two years in ramping up investment on the network, we undisputedly have a strong network in our region. Our capital investment last year of over R200 million has enabled us to further expand our 2G, 3G and 4G network coverage, increase data speeds, and reduce our dropped-call rate across the region, ensuring that we continue to deliver on our ‘best network’ promise.

“This financial year alone we will spend R250 million ramping up the network in the Western Cape region, bringing our investment on the network to nearly half a billion rand over a period of two years. The bulk of this money is going to be used to deploy 3G and 4G base stations in major towns of the Western Cape, including townships and rural areas. The base stations form the radio

access network, with the key role being to connect to people’s mobile devices. The core network is more like the brains at the centre of Vodacom’s infrastructure, responsible for routing traffic and making sure that everything functions smoothly.

“When it comes to our voice and data rates, Vodacom was the first in South Africa to introduce personalised pricing through the likes of ‘Just 4 You’, available through our USSD platform, by dialling *123#. In South Africa, customers have responded positively to our segmented marketing approach and concerted efforts to increase bundle adoption engagement, particularly through our ‘Just 4 You’ offers. This resulted in the sale of almost 1.5 billion bundles – an increase of 34.1%.

“Data and voice prices have come down

quite significantly, particularly in recent times. In the past year, voice and data fell by 14.3% and 16.0% respectively in South Africa. This brings the cumulative reduction in voice and data prices to 42.2% and 44.3% over the past three years.

“At the beginning of this year, we launched Siyakha (iSizulu for ‘we build’) – a platform aimed at lowering the cost of communication for the emerging market while simultaneously seeking to increase digital and social connectivity. One of the first products that we launched under the Siyakha banner is Facebook Flex, which is a limited version of the popular social network website that is free for Vodacom subscribers. We believe that through investment and relevant communication and technology solutions, we can change people’s lives.”

GETTING PEOPLE OFF THE STREETS - HUMANELY The City of Cape Town recognises that it has a duty to manage people living on the streets. In 2014 it created a Street People Reintegration Unit for the reintegration or reunification of street people into society or place of origin.

The unit works with other City departments specialising in this field, such as Law Enforcement.

The unit attends to about 1 000 homeless person complaints/queries per month. It offers social services to street people including referral to shelters and access to Expanded Public Works Programmes, assistance with securing IDs and social grants,as well as social assistance for reunification with the family.

Some successes (June 2016 to June 2017) • Street people issues closed – 14 632 • Street people engaged and assisted - 2660 • Persons reunified with families and off the street - 82 • People placed in shelters and supported during the recent storm - 343 Street people cannot be forced to accept assistance. To achieve long-term results, the unit must engage with people individually and work with them to understand and address their circumstances. Kids learn new skills at rugby coaching clinic Kids between the ages of three and 13 years attended the rugby skills coaching clinic of Philip Snyman, captain of the SA Sevens and World Sevens Champions, on Saturday 24 June at Bellpark Primary in Bellville. The kids learned how to pass the ball, the

proper way to tackle your opponent, and also just to have fun. The fathers were more concerned about their kids not scoring tries and were on the field when the youngsters’ tears started flowing.

Beat the winter holiday blues A number of City of Cape Town departments have pulled out all the stops to ensure that the holiday programmes for the winter break will keep children well occupied.

The City’s Mayco member for safety and security and social services, JP Smith, says it can be a challenge to keep the young ones busy for a few weeks during the school holidays, but the City facilities and winter programmes cater for all ages to ensure there is something for everyone, whether a lover of nature, music, art, books or sport.

Smith says the City’s Recreation and Parks Department has a diverse range of both indoor and outdoor activities on offer at its hubs – from board games and concerts, to dancing and face-painting, to five-a-side soccer and cricket.

In addition to the usual selection of books and audiovisual materials on offer at libraries, children can enjoy puppet shows, arts

and crafts, and talent shows.

“We have an extensive list of programmes to ensure that there is something each day to beat the boredom. I want to encourage parents to send their children to these programmes to not only keep them busy, but also give them the opportunity to socialise and learn even during the holidays,” Smith says.

“Holidays can also be expensive when you’re trying to keep children occupied.

Most of our programmes are free of charge and could even lead to newly discovered talents and skills,” Smith says.

He adds that the City’s extensive holiday programme is in line with their Organisational Development and Transformation Plan, which seeks to build integrated communities.

Blind singer with inspirational vision Blind gospel singer Len Viljoen entertained seniors at Tygerberg Meals on Wheels in Parow last week.

Manager of the centre, Linda Louw, says Viljoen entertained the seniors with his beautiful gospel singing and his quirky sense of humour.

“He was born blind, but that has not stopped him from sharing his wonderful singing voice with the people around him. He

told the seniors how to overcome all the obstacles in their lives by just changing their attitude towards life and other people,” Louw says.

She says his motto, “Turn your obstacles around – they become stepping stones”, has become a way of life for him.

“It was a pleasure having this positive young man with us and we hope to ask him around again,” Louw adds.

ie inspirerende boodskap van die Olimpiese swemmer Chad le Clos onlangs by die pret-swembyeenkoms in die Blue Downs-binnenshuise swembad, het lede van die Hoërskool Modderdam- en die Modderdam Aquatics-swemklub aangespoor om hul swemmery ernstig op te neem.

Die skool en die swemklub neem weer op Saterdag 9 Julie aan die volgende pretswembyeenkoms in Blue Downs deel.

“Slegs genooide skole en swemskole is na die byeenkoms genooi. Sedert ons leerders en swemmers met Le Clos kennis gemaak het, is hulle nou meer gemotiveerd,” het Gadija Samuels, onderwyser en swemafrigter by die skool, gesê.

“Chad het vir ons uitgestaan as ’n nederige mens met vaste beginsels, maar met sy swemvoete beslis vas op die aarde. Hy het benadruk dat hy van die klein dorpie Pinetown naby Durban kom en nooit die voorreg gehad het om in ’n Olimpiese standaardswembad soos die een in Blue Downs, te oefen nie,” het Samuels gesê.

Hy het die swemmers aangemoedig om hard te oefen sodat hulle ook eendag die SA Olimpiese swemspan kan haal. Hy het ook genoem dat hy al op talle plekke in die wêreld was, maar nog nooit sulke prag en warmte soos in die Kaap ervaar het nie!

Modderdam Aquatics was die algehele voorlopers tydens die oggendsessie van die gala waar swemmers aan 25 m, 50 m, 100 m en aflosse in die vryslag, borsslag, vlinderslag en vryslag deelgeneem het. Die middagsessie was vir die leer-om-te-swemgroep, het Samuels gesê.

Entries open for Blisters for Bread 2017 E

ntries are now open for Blisters for Bread 2017.

The Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) is pleased to announce that entries are now open for its 49th popular annual fundraising event, the Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk, in association with Lucky Star.

The event will be taking place at the Green Point Cricket Club on Sunday 27 August 2017 and will include two routes along the Sea Point Promenade: a 10km walk starting at 07:30 am and a 5km walk starting at 08:00 am. Every person who enters will receive a medal.

Due to popular demand, X Factor winners Four will once again be entertaining the walkers as they cross the finish line at the stadium.

Other entertainment includes a high-energy performance by top South African pop singer, Lakota Silva. A host of food and refreshment stalls will also be available for everyone’s enjoyment.

This year PSFA aims to emphasise four areas in which food enables children to

reach their true potential. The awareness campaign is based on four key pillars that represent four core reasons to provide children with nutritious meals, namely food for thought (food enables young learners to think critically), food for cr8tivity (healthy meals enable the mind to be creative), food for play (balanced meals give learners the energy to perform in sport and general play), and food for all (together we can make sure that all our youth have access to healthy food).

PSFA calls everyone to join them in their fight against childhood hunger by entering this special family event at the cost of only R50 per person. Each entry fee will enable PSFA to provide 20 underprivileged hungry schoolchildren with a nutritious cooked breakfast and lunch for an entire day! Entries are limited to 13 000 people.

Navy blue T-shirts will also be on sale at R80 each.

Entries can be done online, or the entry form can be downloaded at www.psfa.org.za. Entry forms can also be collected at the PSFA offices situated at 26

Purdey Road, Sheffield Business Park in Philippi, at the Top Events offices situated at 7 Koeberg Road in Maitland, or at selected Pick n Pay and Sportsmans Warehouse branches in the greater Cape Town area.

The closing date for group entries is 30 July, for manual entries 6 August and for online entries 20 August.

Not everyone is able to walk Blisters for Bread, so PSFA is encouraging both Cape Town locals and the rest of South Africa, whether members of the public, businesses or schools, to consider making a monetary contribution. This can be done by logging onto the website at www.psfa.org.za. 100% of all donations made to PSFA will go towards school feeding, and donations are tax deductible.

Blisters for Bread, which was started in 1968 by concerned staff and learners at Savio College in Lansdowne and handed over to PSFA to manage, has grown from strength to strength and has become a highlight on the Cape Town events calendar.

Last year, a total of 13 624 people partici-

pated in the event. Thanks to entry fees received, the event managed to raise a total of R681 200, enabling PSFA to provide over 1724 disadvantaged children with a nutritious breakfast and lunch at school for an entire year!

PSFA is a registered non-profit organisation that is dedicated to feeding hungry children while at school. Established in 1958, PSFA has to date served over 1.5 billion meals to underprivileged schoolchildren. PSFA currently provides daily nutritious cooked meals to over 27 000 children at 160 primary, secondary and specialneeds schools, as well as Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres, safe parks and colleges throughout the Western Cape.

Participants are encouraged to enter early to avoid disappointment.

Hulle het met behulp van ’n verskeidenheid hindernisse die jong fietsryers van die laerskole Totius en

Eversdal touwys gemaak en ’n paar nuwe vaardighede aangeleer, wat hulle in staat gestel het om met selfvertroue oor die hindernisse te kom. Die dapper gr. R’s tot meer er-

vare gr. 7-leerders het elkeen kans gekry om op vier verskillende hindernisbane te wys hoe vernuftig hulle met hul fietse kan wees.

Hierdie was net ’n voorsmakie van wat gedoen kan word, en hopelik gaan daar nog indrukwekkende prestasies hieruit voortvloei.

Leerders van die laerskole Totius en Eversdal geniet ’n blaaskans ná hul fietsry-opleiding.

Comrades­ medalje:

Die Bellvilleatletiekklub se siggestremde atleet, Cornelia Liebenberg, en haar hardloopgids, Pieter Carstens, het onlangs aan die Comrades-marathon deelgeneem.

Cornelia het vanjaar haar tweede Comrades voltooi, en dus haar back-to-back-medalje ontvang, tesame met ’n Vic Clapham-medalje vir hul tyd van 11:34. Pieter het sy tiende Comrades gedoen en dus sy groen nommer verwerf.

KNOCKOUT CHALLENGE: DRAW TOOK PLACE FOR CAPE TOWN LEG

All eyes on Engen Cup T

he draw for the Cape Town leg of the 2017 Engen Knockout Challenge took place on Tuesday 20 June at the River Club in Observatory.

The eagerly anticipated u.17 event takes place from Friday 30 June to Sunday 2 July at Vasco da Gama Football Club in Parow.

Cape Town’s football fraternity was out in force for the draw. In attendance were SAFA Cape Town vice-president and deputy director in the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Bennet Bailey, along with Engen Knockout Challenge Cape Town tournament director, Imraan Morgan, 2017 Engen Knockout Challenge Cape Town ambassador, Brent Carelse, as well as South African football legends Hans Vonk, Donnie Ronnie, Duncan Crowie and Noel Cousins.

Coaches of participating teams from as far afield as Helderberg were also present to witness the event and to discover who their opponents are in the group stages of the preeminent youth football event.

Speaking at the draw, Engen’s group sponsorship manager, Brad Bergh, urged the young players participating in the tournament to use it as a stepping stone to launch their professional careers.

“This is where it all starts, and Engen is delighted to be a part of the development of football at grassroots level,” said Bergh.

SAFA Cape Town vice-president, Bennet Bailey, lauded Engen’s commitment to grassroots football.

“It’s a fact that sport plays an important role in shaping the future of our young people.

The Engen Knockout Challenge ambassador for Cape Town, Brent Carelse, said he is proud to be associated with the tournament.

“I started my football career at a very young age right here in Cape Town. Succeeding to play at the highest level was always my goal,” said Carelse, who went on to star for Hellenic, Ajax Cape Town, Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United and Bafana Bafana.

“Make the most of each opportunity, work hard, love the game and stay focused. Your journey starts here!”

Members of teams that will participate in the Engen Knockout Challenge this coming weekend at the draw of the competition.

The winners of the regional Engen Knockout Challenge events will battle it out in the Engen Champ of Champs later in the year to determine the national champions.
