DANGEROUS ALLEYS IN ST DUMAS : CITY HEARS RESIDENTS’ PLEAS FOR HELP
Alleys of crime DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
T
wo dangerous alleys in St Dumas, Kuils River, will hopefully be closed off by the City soon following a desperate plea for help by local residents. Soon after a complaint from a resident was escalated to the office of the mayor, ward councillor Desirée Visagie visited the site
accompanied by subcouncil chairperson Malusi Booi and several officials. They visited the lanes in Melkhout and Robert Streets to assess the situation. After the visit on Tuesday, which included interviews with neighbours on both sides of the lanes, Visagie told TygerBurger that she would complete a motivation to the subcouncil to have the lanes closed. “It is indeed very good that the community
is willing to take responsibility for the maintenance and care of the areas should they be closed,” she said. Resident André Paries says this intervention comes in the nick of time. “These alleys are two of three in the area that have become a den for criminals. Some residents were so desperate they even closed up the third one in Rooikraantz Street out of their own pockets,” he says.
“There is no doubt that these alleys have become a hideout for criminals and a gathering place for drug addicts. Lately it has become so dangerous that we as residents are too afraid to go near there at night. Stolen goods are often found there and criminals use the alleys as quick getaways when running away from police and neighbourhood watch patrols,” he says. V To page 7.
