ILLEGAL SQUATTERS: CITY ‘DOES NOTHING’ DESPITE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS
‘City turns blind eye’

llegal squatters living alongside the Kuils River Caravan Park are wreaking havoc for local residents in ward 11, while numerous pleas for help to the City over the past month seem to have fallen on deaf ears. The illegal structure with several people living in it is situated on Van Riebeeck Road and is barely visible as one drives from Zev-
enwach Mall towards the Total Garage. According to one local man, the residents living in the vicinity of this land are being severely affected. “Break-ins have increased and people running from the police regularly jump over our walls to escape to the main road,” says this resident. “Residents have had to put up spikes at their own cost to ensure their safety in this area.
“I saw with my own eyes how people walking across the land covered their faces with their jackets when we spotted them,” he says. Residents living in Safraan say the entire area has become unsafe. In addition, rubbish is being dumped in the stormwater drains, and the remnants of stolen goods are found in the vlei and field on a regular basis. The issue has been repeatedly reported to
the local ward councillor, Desirée Visagie, and the subouncil since 3 June. “Despite three official complaints to the City of Cape Town by concerned residents of Kuils River, nothing has been done to clear or clean the piece of land as yet,” says this resident. According to him the situation is now becoming untenable and urgent intervention is needed. V To page 2.
