Mammoth task removing whale

Municipal workers and onlookers watch as the carcass of a beached humpback whale is removed from the beach at Kreeftebaai on the West Coast last week. The carcass washed ashore on Thursday 8 June and was removed the same day. The whale is described as being 12 metres long and still a juvenile. Another whale, a small pygmy sperm whale, washed ashore near Strand fontein Pavilion earlier that same week, the City of Cape Town says. Story on page 7. PHOTO: JACQUES DU TOIT

Cape Town teenager will be appearing in court next month after the police found R500 000 in his possession. The teenage boy (15) was arrested last week. Captain Frederick van Wyk, provincial police spokesperson, told TygerBurger this week that the minor is from Lentegeur in Mitchell’s Plain. He first appeared in the Juvenile Court at

the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 6 June following his arrest the previous day. His next court appearance will be on 20 July, Van Wyk says. “The investigation continues,” he adds. According to police, the 15-year-old youth was arrested on Monday 5 June shortly before 23:00 when he tried to evade a police vehicle checkpoint near Parklands Main Road, Parklands. “When the boy noticed the police, he turned his vehicle around and sped away,” Captain Adriana Chandler, Table View po-

lice spokesperson, says. Table View police officers chased the vehicle until it came to a halt in Sandown Road, Parklands. “When the officers interviewed him at the scene, he indicated that he did not have a licence to drive the vehicle, hence the reason for speeding away. The vehicle was searched and officers discovered R500 000 in the boot of the vehicle. The boy claimed to be 18 years old. “When asked where he had obtained the large amount of cash, the boy then stated that he is 15 years old and refused to speak

further,” Chandler says. His parents were contacted. The boy was detained but released. He then appeared in court and was released on bail. TygerBurger approached the provincial police to enquire if there have been any new developments since his appearance, what the boy’s actual age is, where he was on his way to on the evening he was arrested, and whether they could determine the source or the owner of the cash. The police have yet to provide feedback in this regard. V To page 2.
