A

new group of crime fighters is keeping a watchful eye over Table View. The group is the newly elected committee of the Table View Neighbourhood Watch, which was introduced to the community recently. The members are Grant Lemos (chairman), Brian Gardner (vice-chairman), Gary Korck (treasurer), Wayde Greig (sector 1 general manager), Nadine Ross (sector 2 general manager), Carol-Anne Avery (sector 3 general manager), Jolene Page (media liaison), Elizabeth Derman (secre-

tary) and Alon Cramer (control room manager). The executive committee was elected on 17 May at an annual general election. The watch group is adamant in ridding their area of crime, and to prove it they recently took part in a 12-hour patrol campaign on Thursday 15 June. “With support from organisations like Complex Patrols, Star Alarms and Community Medics, 51 neighbourhood watch members took to the street to launch the campaign. Over the next few hours more members joined and by midnight 62 members were on the patrol. “A great team spirit was felt on the road,

as you could see patrol vehicles around almost every corner or road you drove into. At the 03:15 coffee stop there were still 20 members going, but the fatigue was clearly visible on some faces,” Page says. She explains that at the end of the 12 hours (09:00), only six members were still standing, “but it was still all smiles.” The neighbourhood watch thanks the organisations that supported this initiative. “A huge thank you to all the members that took part – thank you for being part of the solution,” Page says. According to Page the last few weeks have been quite a busy period for the watch.

One of the incidents that kept them on their feet, she says, was their preparation for the recent storm that hit Cape Town. “As the cold front approached we prepared for the storm, and any possible emergencies that could occur, by putting together a ‘storm reaction team’. This team consisted of members with 4x4 and 4x2 vehicles to be on standby to assist with any flooding or incidents where there was a need to enter waterlogged areas. Luckily the only incidents reported were uprooted trees where our members assisted with chainsaws to remove the trees from roads and properties. V To page 2.
