A

Protea Valley man is finally able to sleep at night – months after his fight against his neighbour’s dogs started.

Terence Saunders was so desperate over his neighbour’s dogs’ constant barking and whining over the past few months, he approached almost anyone who could help him – Law Enforcement, his councillor, his neighbours, the SPCA and the media.

The dogs were finally removed by the

SPCA last week. “It has been absolute bliss since then, no noise disturbance at all,” he says.

Terence says his problems started when the neighbour brought home two boerboel puppies late last year. The dogs soon starting barking incessantly and as they grew older, would climb on the boundary wall between the two properties.

Terence, who has two young children, says his children are extremely vulnerable to an attack from dogs of this size.

His domestic worker is also petrified of the

dogs.

The tipping point came when the dogs climbed on the wall and then fell into Terence’s yard.

He logged numerous complaints with Law Enforcement, starting in December, and TygerBurger is in possession of numerous videos, photos and soundclips he sent to different authorities.

Law Enforcement managed to get the neighbour to keep the dogs off the boundary wall, but the dogs were then kept on a leash and started crying incessantly.

“How the owners (were) not disturbed by the noise is completely unfathomable,” he says.

Terence called the SPCA because he was concerned the dogs’ leashes were too short.

They also had puppies, bringing the total number of dogs to six.

When approached by TygerBurger the neighbour, who did not want to be named, said he feels the issue is not about his dogs, but about something personal, possibly their racial differences.

“We have had issues since we came here,” he said. “The only solution is raising the wall (then he won’t see us)”.

The neighbour also said Terence doesn’t want to talk to him, something he feels offended by.

Terence laughs off the racism claims. He says he did try to talk to the family, but was met by his neighbour’s wife who didn’t respond too kindly to him.

Councillor Siyabulela Mamkeli, Mayoral Committee member for Area Central, City of Cape Town, says residents experiencing similar problems are encouraged to report such cases to the City’s Law Enforcement Department on 021 480 7700.

He says each case is handled according to its merits, and guidelines are contained in the Animal By-law.

“For instance, a barking dog is dealt with differently from an unleashed dog or a dog bite complaint for that matter,” he says.

One of these guidelines in the bylaw states there needs to be proof of dogs barking continuously for three minutes within a half-hour period or six minutes within an hour.

T

he situation at one of the City’s busiest commuter hotspots is volatile, with emotions “potentially heading for breaking point”.

This according to a motion of exigency tabled by Councillor Jacoline Visser at a recent subcouncil 6 meeting.

The motion, which was supported by the rest of the subcouncil, demands a shortterm action plan for the “management crisis” at the Bellville Passenger Transport Interchange (BPTI).

The BPTI, which sees around 180 000 commuters daily, has been earmarked for substantial upgrades, the City announced a few months ago. The motion says the short-term action plan should address not only the absence of a general management plan, but also the “explosive situation between legal and illegal traders” and the dangerous environment at the BPTI. There are currently 80 legal traders and around 180 illegal traders operating in the BPTI. “These legal traders are feeling very aggrieved about their trading circumstances, and their temperature and emotions are very high,” says the motion. “This makes the situation very volatile, which puts the project of the regeneration of the Bellville CBD and the Voortrekker Road Corridor Project at great risk.”

Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport and urban development, says the City’s Transport and Urban Development Authority (TDA) is investigating the potential of a “new vertically integrated PTI” with the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). “The facility will be integrating rail, MyCiTi buses, minibus taxis and non-

motorised transport into one facility and will offer significant safety and convenience benefits.”

Herron says it’s important to note the time period attached to projects like these.

“Major capital projects run over a period of at least three to five years, and the more complex projects up to 10 years or longer.”

In the meantime the TDA will undertake some improvements at the current BPTI, but more details about these interim improvements will only be available after the commencement of the new financial year on 1 July, he adds.

Bellville is regarded by the City as Cape Town’s second CBD. It houses five hospitals and three university campuses located within the central area.

Council also recently approved the City’s revised Built Environment Performance Plan (BEPP), which directs where the City will spend its capital budget for the next financial year (starting on 1 July).

The City said in a statement it will spend the bulk of its R6.8 billion capital budget on projects located within three integration zones across Cape Town, including the Voortrekker Road Corridor Integration Zone (VRCIZ).

The VRCIZ hosts the business districts of Bellville, Maitland, Parow, Goodwood and Salt River.

“Over the next two financial years we will invest an estimated R1.4 billion in capital projects in the VRCIZ,” Herron said in the statement.

“We will focus on the spatial restructuring of the VRCIZ by addressing the public transport capacity constraints and freight movement along Voortrekker Road and the inefficient and unproductive use of public land,” he said.

T

he work being done by a cancer survivor among young children has inspired a group of students so much, they have pledged their ongoing support of her work.

Students at Prestige Academy and Bellville Academy collected and donated clothes and toys to Boucher Safe House in Monte Vista recently.

This was the second donation made as part of their Sunflower Drive.

Elizma Boucher, who has been running the safe house since 2007, is currently fostering nine abandoned children.

“She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and again in 2012, which led to a double mastectomy,” says Amelia Blom, marketing manager at Prestige Academy. Boucher’s husband Johan passed away in 2012. “Despite these challenges she continues the dream they shared: Making a difference; reaching out to innocent children without a safe haven; and creating a loving, caring and healthy environment for abused, mentally disabled, injured, ill and traumatised children,” Blom adds.

The students who dropped off the donations also spent some time with the children.

“The student representative councils (SRCs) of both private higher education institutions make a point of assisting with the constant needs of Boucher Safe House and Elizma’s dream, which is to uphold her loving and homely standards for the kids even with the ever rising costs of living, medical and educational expenses, among others,” Blom says.

The Sunflower Drive, held at Prestige Academy during February and May, was launched in memory of late SRC member and student, Louise van der Walt.

Louise, who passed away in an accident in 2016, was often described as a sunflower because of her radiant, loving and happy personality.

The students split their donations in two, with the first group of donations (specifically blankets and clothes) being given to The Carpenter Shop situated in the Cape Town CBD, and the other donations of toys and children’s clothes being given to Boucher Safe House.

Association for disabled celebrates 80th The Western Cape Association for Persons with Disabilities (WCAPD) is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year with a series of events lined up to mark the occasion.

Cape Town Tourism made a video that was posted on social media to promote the Durbanville Valley. “This was followed by the election of a festival committee in August last year. The different routes were established and we now have an excellent database of what is on offer,” Uys says.

“The concept of the Winter Festival is to showcase Durbanville as a local tourist destination, offering tourists an exciting experience of their choice with different routes to follow,” she says.

Join Durbanville Hills for an evening with bubbly and canapés on arrival, a cellar tour and tank and barrel tasting on 23, 24, 27, 29 and 30 June.

Hillcrest presents a tapas evening around its fireplace on 23 June. Throughout the week a selection of soups will be on offer, while on Sunday 25 June live music at the quarry will keep festivalgoers entertained.

Nitida presents a Blend and Bottle with Nitida on 23 and 28 June where one can learn the basics of winemaking. The Predator Series night trail run will take place on 29 June. he official opening of the Pampoenkraal Heritage Square upgrade project, as well as the launch of the new Durbanville En Route initiative, have suffered a blow.

The opening of the R10 million upgrade project by Cape Town mayor, Patricia de Lille, was supposed to happen this Friday 23 June to coincide with the Durbanville En Route Winter Festival taking place from 23 to 30 June.

On the one hand, the more than fourmonth delay in the project – partially due to the pending litigation between the City of Cape Town and the contractor – is being blamed for the postponement of the official opening to 30 June.

Full Winter Festival programme On the other hand, the festival literally suffered a blow due to the damage to the Durbanville Town Hall during the storm on Wednesday 7 June, which resulted in the cancellation of all events – mostly markets – planned in the town hall.

Some gallery windows were blown out in the storm, while the ceiling above the stage was also damaged and other water damage also occurred, says councillor Theresa Uys. Despite these hurdles, the programme on the rest of the routes will continue.

The Winter Festival will be officially opened with an opening parade on Saturday 24 June from the town hall through Wellington Road. It will start at 08:00.

The Durbanville En Route initiative consists of different tourist routes, including the existing Durbanville wine route, an arts and culture route, a cycling route, a restaurant and coffee shop route, as well as a caring route. More routes can be added at a later

Welgemoed learner tops the grade in creative arts Mieke Jonck, a Grade 6 learner at Welgemoed Primary School, was a finalist and the grade winner in the category Creative Arts at the National Eisteddfod awards evening held recently.

Mieke takes art lessons at Kiddies Create Art School and loves working with pastels, says her mom Hanne.

The National Eisteddfod Academy (NEA) is a non-profit organisation for youth development in the arts, providing young top achievers in the visual arts with a platform on which to be acknowledged, recognised and promoted.

In order to qualify for participation in the prestigious NEA competition, young artists are required to score at least 90% in a local eisteddfod. The external eisteddfods nominate and enter their top achievers, and a panel then judges all entries over three rounds. Mieke Jonck won the semi-final round and became the grade winner. The winners were announced at the Brooklyn Theatre and Mieke had to fly up to Gauteng to attend the prize-giving event, her mom says.

Mieke’s art teacher, Chantel Hill, said she is very proud of Mieke and congratulated her on this excellent achievement.

Graad 7-leerder van die Laerskool Welgemoed is hard aan die werkskaf om te midde van ’n druk eksamenrooster, sport- en skoolverantwoordelikhede honderde bederfboksies vir die jonger brandslagoffers van Knysna bymekaar te maak.

Toe Zanke Nell (12) hoor van die verwoestende brande in die Knysnaarea, het sy dadelik gedink aan hul skool se Waardes-projek wat kinders leer oor respek, eerlikheid, selfdissipline, verantwoordelikheid en omgee, en toe daad by die woord gevoeg, sê haar ma, Suzanne Meyer-Nell.

Nou maak die stapels bederfboksies wat reeds na hul huis in Welgemoed stroom haar en haar twee sussies, Anne (10) en Lila (7), uiters opgewonde oor menswees.

“Dit is ongelooflik om te sien hoe baie mense omgee,” sê Zanke.

Volgens haar word daar tans in Knysna gefokus op basiese benodigdhede vir die mense van Knysna Zanke wat niks oorhet nie.

Die doel van haar bederfboksies is juis om nie nóg noodvoorrade na die area te stuur nie, maar eerder om, ná die stof gaan lê het, ’n troospakkie vir kinders te wees wat alles in die brande verloor het. “’n Mens voel so magteloos as jy sulke slegte nuus kry, veral as jy ’n kind is. Jy wens jy kan iets doen om te help. Die bederfboksies is om kinders van ons area die geleentheid te gee om iets te kan beteken. Dit is ván kinders áán kinders,” benadruk sy.

“Ons het die projek gegrond op die Santa Shoebox-konsep. Kinders en volwassenes wat betrokke wil raak, kan skoen- of ander boksies mooi oortrek en vul met bederfgoedjies vir kinders van alle ouderdomme.

“Speelgoed, soos ’n fidget spinner of ’n karretjie vir ’n seuntjie-boks, sagte speelgoed, koekies en lekkers, inkleurboeke en skryfbehoeftes, ’n serp of sokkies – enigiets waarmee jy kinders wat alles verloor het, wil bederf, is welkom. “’n Klas of hele skool kan ook besluit om betrokke te raak – dit is reeds wonderlik om te sien hoe groot kinders se harte is en hoe graag hulle gee,” vertel Zanke.

Suzanne help met die logistiek. Die mikpunt is om minstens 800 boksies na Knysna te stuur.

Die bederfboksie-projek word aangebied in samewerking met Monique Strydom se Matla A Bana-nie-regeringsorganisasie en Gill Marcus van KILT in Knysna, wat die Knysna Relief Fund behartig.

“Maar hierdie is ’n ware gemeenskapsprojek waarby almal sover sonder om te skroom betrokke geraak het – selfs Radio Tygerberg wat ’n onderhoud met Zanke gevoer het, terwyl sy met haar geskiedenisboek op die skoot sit!” vertel Suzanne.

“Soveel mense het hul tyd en energie reeds vrywillig hierin gestort. Daar is te veel betrokkenes om te bedank, maar dit is ’n seëning om almal se liefde so tasbaar te voel,” sê sy.

Projek vir kinders, deur kinders Leerders van Welgemoed is tans besig met ’n projek vir kinders, deur kinders.

Saam met die hulpverleningsorganisasie Matla a Bana en hul ouers, het dié groepie kinders, onder leiding van Zanke Nell (12), hande gevat en samel hulle nou “bederfboksies” in vir kinders van Knysna en die omliggende gebiede wat ná die onlangse verwoestende brande alles verloor het.

Elke boksie bevat lekkers en koekies, in-

kleurboeke of sogenaamde skribbel- of doodle-boeke, skryfbehoeftes, ’n speelding, serp of sokkies. Bederfboksies kan by De Mistweg 8, Welgemoed, of by Kainos-eiendomme, die Lewende Woord-gemeente in Parow, of by Plan B Vintage in Oxfordstraat in Durbanville afgelewer word. Alles moet voor Woensdag 28 Junie afgelewer word.

Kruger off to his 4th Transplant Games CARINA ROUX

69-year-old retiree from Edgemead who had a heart transplant in 2009 will be among 52 South African athletes departing for Málaga, Spain, this coming Saturday.

The 21st World Transplant Games (WTG) kicks off in this port city on Sunday 25 June.

South Africa has been participating at this biannual event since 1993.

Every one of the approximately 2500 participants from about 55 different countries who will partake in 17 different sporting codes during the weeklong games has had an organ or tissue transplant. For Dick Kruger, a proud grandfather of six who has been married to his wife, Annette, for 48 years, this will be his fourth WTG. “I have been privileged to represent my country at three World Transplant Games,” says Kruger, who will be participating in the individual and team golf events as he did in Sweden in 2011, in Durban in 2013 – where he won a silver medal – and in Argentina in 2015.

This year he will also be participating in the javelin event for the first time, in the Dick Kruger 60 to 69 age group.

Kruger says all organ recipients are on a wide range of medications and face many challenges. Due to a weak immune system they are susceptible to colds, pneumonia, and so forth. “By living a healthy, active lifestyle one can overcome these challenges,” he adds. This underlines the WTG Federation’s aim “to raise public awareness of the importance and benefits of organ donation by demonstrating the health and fitness that can be achieved post-transplant.”

Throughout high school he was always active, playing rugby and participating in athletics, and in his late twenties he took up golf, says Kruger.

“At 45 I had my first heart attack and subsequently suffered a second heart attack as a result of calcified arteries, which resulted in a triple bypass.” In his late forties he was declared medically unfit to continue working and was placed on early retirement.

Kruger, who was previously a purchasing and logistics manager, decided to relocate from Gauteng to Cape Town “for a more relaxed lifestyle”.

“In 2009 I suffered end-stage cardiomyopathy and my cardiologist advised that a heart transplant was the only option, as further bypass surgery was not possible and the insertion of stents too dangerous due to

my weak heart,” says Kruger. He was placed on the waiting list for a transplant.

Due to his deteriorating heart he could barely walk and basic everyday things were difficult and tiring, says Kruger. “I was always out of breath and had to give up all forms of sport.”

“From February 2009 I spent more time in CCU and ICU at Christian Barnard Memorial Hospital than at home,” says Kruger. He says it was the support of family, friends, doctors and nursing staff that carried him through this emotional and stressful stage of his life. On the evening of 26 May 2009 he received a call from Dr Willie Koen, heart transplant surgeon, with the news that a suitable donor had been found. On 27 May 2009 he received a new heart.

“Once I gained consciousness after the transplant, the first thing I was aware of was that I could breathe without effort,” says Kruger. He says the recovery process after the transplant was an emotional one – “thankful for being alive, coming to terms with the fact that someone had to die in order for me to get the Gift of Life.” His lifestyle has changed and he now follows a healthy diet and exercises regularly, says Kruger. “Every day I thank my Maker, my donor and my donor’s family for my new lease on life.”

While Kruger was still in hospital recovering from the transplant, the transplant coordinator told him about the Transplant Games.

On his discharge from hospital he became an active member of the South African Transplant Sports Association (SATSA) and has since become the treasurer of both the Western Cape Region and the National SA Transplant Sports Association.

“By participating in sport I not only celebrate my second chance but also honour my donor and prove that one can live an active, healthy life after transplantation while promoting organ donation.”

According to the Organ Donor Foundation there are currently more than 4000 people on the waiting list for an organ transplant. Kruger appeals to everyone to register as an organ donor – “it costs nothing”.

Africana­verkoping by Bellville­biblioteek D

ie Vriende van Bellville-biblioteek se volgende kwartaallikse Africana-verkoping op Saterdag 24 Junie beloof weer ’n skatkis van boekvondse vir die versamelaar en boekliefhebber te wees.

Daar is onder meer twee skaars en gesogte boeke deur die skrywer en kunstenaar Johannes Meintjies: Lyrical work/Liriese werk (1948), geteken, en met ’n inskrywing deur die skrywer.

Dit bevat ook ’n uitnodiging na ’n privaat besigtiging van sy tentoonstelling op 22 Julie 1952 in die kunssaal in Port Elizabeth, met ’n katalogus van die tentoonstelling. Sy dorp van drome: die geskiedenis van Molteno 1874 – 1974 word deur Karel Schoeman in Die laaste Afrikaanse boek genoem as ’n voorbeeld van goeie kontrei-geskiedenis.

Van Karel Schoeman, na wie se boeke daar hernude aanvraag is ná sy onlangse dood, is daar Titaan, Spiraal, Waar ek gelukkig was, Die laaste Afrikaanse boek: outobiografiese aantekeninge, ’n Duitser aan die Kaap 17241765, en Olive Schreiner: ’n lewe in SA 18651881. Daar is ook ’n eksemplaar van Sluiswagter by die dam van stemme: beskouings oor die werk van Karel Schoeman, geredigeer deur Willie Burger en Helize van Vuuren.

Genealogiese bronne is redelik skaars en gewild, en op dié verkoping is daar Pama se Groot Afrikaanse familienaamboek (1983), A.J. Kannemeyer se Hugenote-familieboek (1940), Afrikaner-familienaamboek: Personalia 1955, saamgestel deur J. H. Redelinghuys, Driehonderdjaar nasiebou deur D. Malherbe en Bruwer-familiegeskiedenis

(2011) deur Vincent Bruwer.

In die 500ste herdenkingsjaar van die Lutherse Hervorming is dit miskien gepas dat daar ook verskeie baie interessante boeke oor plaaslike kerkgeskiedenis is, onder meer die skaars Die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk in Suid-Afrika 1652 – 1873 (1937) deur A. Moorrees, Ons gemeentelike feesalbum (1952), ’n gedenkboek saamgestel vir die Van Riebeeckfees met ’n oorsig oor 600 gemeentes in die ontstaan en groei van die NG Kerk, die ryklik-geïllustreerde Die kerk van Stellenbosch – 1686-1963 deur A.M. Hugo, Ons kerk en prof. Du Plessis (1933).

Daar is ook weer ’n verskeidenheid van die immergewilde Lawrence Green-boeke, ’n aantal titels uit die Ons geskiedenis-reeks, volledige stelle van die 1972-druk van die

Standard Encyclopedia of Southern Africa, Versamelde werke van C.J. Langenhoven (1972), Versamelde Werke van Totius (1977eeufeesuitgawe), ’n eerste uitgawe van G.R. von Wielligh se Langs die Lebombo – ’n awontuurlike verhaal oor moedhou, jag, gouddelwe en Swasies (1923), Treasures of the Diamond Coast: a century of diamond mining in Namibia (2008) deur Gabi Schneider, en Paarl Valley 1687 – 1987 deur A.G. Oberholster. Benewens die Africana is daar ook gewone nie-fiksie op die verkoping teen baie billike pryse, Afrikaanse fiksie en ’n goeie verskeidenheid kinderboeke, veral in Afrikaans. Die verkoping is van 09:00 tot 16:00 in die ingangsportaal van die Bellville-biblioteeksentrum. Slegs kontant word aanvaar.

Charles was an excellent librarian. She could be very strict, but she put fantastic systems in place.

The library still gets many of their books on longer loan from Bellville Library, a concept Ina-Charles started.

Her nephew, the artist Barry Jackson, says the naming of the library is a “wonderful gesture”.

Ina-Charles lived in Benoni for many years before moving to the Cape. She is the only surviving sibling of four sisters. Besides working as a librarian, she also worked for the medical research council.

Her only son passed away more than 20 years ago.

Turning 100 years old is an achievement by itself, but having something named after you at that age is no mean feat.

The retirement home Residentia Boland (previously known as Huis Boland) recently named the inhouse library after resident Ina-Charles Welthagen (100).

“I am so grateful. Thank you for the lovely gesture,” says Ina-Charles.

Ina-Charles, a trained librarian, was one of the first residents welcomed by the retirement home when it opened its doors. Today she is one of the oldest residents on the premises.

She started the library in 1992 and managed it until 2010 when fellow resident and current librarian Johanna Greef (76) took over the responsibilities.

It was Johanna who suggested naming the library after InaCharles.

“I just sat there (in the library) one day and thought, why not name this place after her? She is still alive (to appreciate it).”

The wheels were set in motion and InaCharles attended the naming and ribboncutting ceremony on Tuesday 6 June. A few of her family members also attended the service.

“Everybody had tears in their eyes,” says Renette du Toit, care manager at the home. “She kept saying how amazing it was.”

Ons soek net ‘supplies’, my liewe Heer

Om ’n shack in ’n plakkerskamp te bou, was vir my ’n nuwe belewenis.

Gister het ons seker meer as twee uur lank gesukkel met die sementblokke onder die grond voordat ons ’n paal kon maak staan.

Die ontstellendste ervaring was sekerlik die afhaal van die dak van een van die shacks. Die storm het dit vernietig en die ou houtplanke het geskuif tot op ’n punt waar dit kan afval.

Met skok kry jy ’n werklike prentjie van die haglike omstandighede waarin die mense woon wanneer die stukkende en lekkende dak afgebreek word.

Al die beddegoed, komberse, klere en die stukkende plankvloer is nog nat ná die vorige storm. Jy sien die groot gate in die sinkplate, wat met ’n stukkende seil bedek is. ’n Gestremde seuntjie is in die hospitaal met dubbele longontsteking opgeneem. ’n Oupa het ’n ligte beroerte-aanval gekry toe sy dak tydens die storm ineengestort Die ‘shacks’ het. Die afhaal van die dak en die het die ergste werklikheid van die deurgeloop, omstandighede waarin die mense leef, het my diep waar daar geruk. Die impak kinders, be­ van die storm is groter as wat ons jaardes, ge­ gedink het. Dit was een van die grootste stremdes en storms wat die Kaap in dekades weerloses getref het. Die shacks het die woon. ergste deurgeloop – daar waar daar kinders, bejaardes, gestremdes en weerloses woon.

Ek het besef dat my gebedsversoek vanaand gaan verander. Ek gaan dit eenvoudig hou.

Ek gaan bid: “Onse Vader wat in die hemel is. Gee vir ons tweedehandse dakplate, spykers, plastiek en tweedehandse houtbalke. Help dat oom Dawie se klein generator en grinder wat die plate sny, nie ingee nie.

Ons vra R20 se petrol vir die generator.

Ons vra vir twee blades vir die grinder.

En soos oom Dawie gesê het, liewe Heer, daar lê nog ’n lang winter voor en ons soek net supplies. Ons wil goeie shacks in die squatter camp bou.”

Dit is my – die shack builder – se gebed vanaand. Gister het ek besef dis die klein dinge wat groot dinge vir ander mense is.

Ek verwys graag na die dekking van TygerBurger en meer spesifiek, die berigte wat vooraf geplaas word met nuus van verskeie kerke en instansies se projekte en fondsinsamelings.

Met die pas afgelope snoekbraai van die NG kerk Bellville-Oos in De la Haye, was ek weer eens verras om te hoor hoeveel van die besoekers van elders in die noordelike voorstede was.

By navraag het ek elke keer gehoor dat hulle die berig oor die snoekbraai in TygerBurger gelees het.

Dus, baie dankie aan TygerBurger dat inligting van sulke projekte van die kerk geplaas word, maar ek wil ook graag van dié geleentheid gebruik maak om al die besoekers wat die snoekbraai ondersteun het, te bedank. Dit is ’n welkome geldelike inspuiting aangesien die kerk deur die jaar fondse insamel vir verskeie projekte ter ondersteuning van behoeftiges.

It is such a good idea asking for donations of stuff not in use and cluttering our homes.

I cleaned out my cupboards after reading your article and quickly put together some items to deliver to your offices in Bellville. I’m so glad good stuff can be put to good use.

I got so excited to help someone in need and was looking forward to the next month’s request.

Now I don’t see the article and am very disappointed, as

I was hoping to get rid of more clutter.

I do not want to take some of the better quality stuff to the dump when someone can make use of it. Please keep up this good idea, which helps us as well as those in need.

Irked by reporter’s insensitivity I would like to comment on Maxine Becket’s column, “So where’s the relief for our local people?” (14 June). How can you be so insensitive and still be a reporter? This whole disaster is already fuelled with racism, and you are just adding fuel to the fire with comments like “some are able to get into their cars and drive to a new beginning”.

Firstly: Many have lost everything they have worked for their whole lives and are not in a position to “just start again” as you insinuate. They not only generated an income and paid taxes, but they provided an income to others.

It will take years to build up the economy in the farming and tourism sectors. So there will be many more people queuing for grants and aid from our (reduced) taxes.

Secondly: We have much more aid and many more church organisations helping in the City than they have in the Knysna area, and not all the aid given to our own destitute is always blazed across the front pages of the newspapers. I know for a fact that a lot of money was collected at my husband’s workplace for the people that lost their homes in Hout Bay a few weeks back. But the locals who have been unfortunate to have lost their homes

can still go to their places of work, or try and find a job, as we still have a tourism and farming sector, unlike Knysna.

Dit het niks met dankbaarheid te doen as ’n individu betaal het om ’n vertoning by te woon nie.

As die promotor stel jy jou kaartjiepryse vas; dus is dit nie regverdig om af te pak by ’n betalende kliënt oor hoeveel dit kos om die vertoning te reël nie. Christo gaan verder en vra: “Kan hy wat kla, dit beter doen?” Ek dink die antwoord daarop is baie eenvoudig: Christo, hy wat kla hoef dit nie beter te doen nie, want hy/sy wat die konsert bywoon, is nie ’n sanger van beroep nie en stel hom/haar nie bloot op ’n verhoog en noem homself/ haarself ’n sanger nie. Dus, hoef hy/sy dit nie beter te kan doen nie, maar jou sangers op die verhoog moet dit baie goed kan doen, want hul noem hulself sangers en jy as promotor het hul gehuur om te sing – op noot. Dis mos nie te veel gevra nie!

Gun elke sanger tog maar glipsie TygerBurger van Woensdag 14 Junie het betrekking. Graag wil ek as een van die borge van die Bakgat Country Opskop vir Christo en sy span gelukwens met nog ’n uithalervertoning.

Aan die Die Zille-familie van Hermanus: ek weet nie lekker waaraan julle gewoond is nie, maar ons kyk na bitter baie optredes deur verskeie kunstenaars, en ek glo nie ek was al op een vertoning waar ’n sanger nie ’n ou foutjie of twee gemaak het nie, of miskien net ’n vals noot of twee laat glip het nie. Ek hou nie van jou manier om so minagtend te verwys na van ons sangers nie, en ek dink jou brief is in slegte smaak.

Indien mense soos Christo van Bakgat-promosies en dies meer nie aan belowende sangers die geleentheid bied om op die groot verhoog hul talent te wys nie, sal ons dalk binnekort sonder sangers wees. Aan Angel en Pieter, ons was al by baie van jul optredes en ek wil net sê: “Hou so aan”. Julle is pragtig.

Toep vir bloed ’n eerste van soort D

ie WP-bloedoortappingsdiens (WPBOD) het nes verskeie ander lande Wêreldbloedskenkerdag op 14 Junie gevier, met ’n boodskap – en ’n nuwe selfoontoepassing.

Die fokus vir vanjaar is op bloedskenking tydens noodgevalle. Die doel van die veldtog is tweeledig. Eerstens is dit om die onmiddellike reaksie in ’n noodgeval – “Wat kan ek doen? – te help beantwoord. Dan tree die sekondêre boodskap van die veldtog in: “Gee bloed. Gee nou. Gee gereeld.”

Om saam met die vieringe te val, het die diens ook sy eie selfoontoepassing bekendgestel.

Hierdie toep lig skenkers in waar hul naaste kliniek is en wys ook watter bloedgroepe dringend benodig word. Dit is die eerste toep van sy soort in die land.

Statistieke toon dat minder as 1,5% van die provinsie se bevolking gereelde bloedskenkers is, terwyl 75% van hierdie bevolking ’n bloedoortapping gaan benodig. Nuwe, gereelde skenkers word altyd benodig.

kole is daarop ingestel om die beste onderrig moontlik vir elke leerder te gee, maar soms kort party leerders meer as net die gewone om deur hul skoolloopbaan te kom.

Terwyl gestremde leerders in openbare skole dieselfde klasse neem en skedules volg as ander leerders, benodig hulle soms ekstra hulp om van punt A na punt B te kom, of om werk in te neem.

Skole doen hul bes om hierdie leerders te akkommodeer en te help om tot die beste van hul vermoë te presteer.

Gideon du Plessis, hoof van die Hoërskool Bellville, vertel dat hul skoolgebou een van die min is wat gebou is met die oog daarop om fisiek gestremde leerders te akkommodeer. Die skool beskik oor twee groot opritte wat die binnekant van die skoolgebou toeganklik vir almal maak. Boonop doen die skool ook moeite om leerders met ander gestremdhede te help, vertel hy.

Vir leerders met sigprobleme word vraestelle vergroot en ekstra tyd gegee om toetse te vergemaklik.

Leerders met gehoorprobleme word toege-

laat om lesse op te neem sodat hulle later weer daarna kan luister, of hulle word voor of aan ’n spesifieke kant van die klas geplaas, sê Du Plessis. Leerders kan ook in afsonderlike lokale skryf waar ’n voorleser ingebring kan word.

Baie leerders word ook gehelp deur leerfasiliteerders, wat opgelei is om hulle by te staan.

In 2016 het die buurskool, die Hoërskool D.F. Malan, sy “I’m Possible”-trust gestig om geld in te samel vir leerfasiliteerders spesiaal bedoel vir fisiek gestremde leerders in

hoofstroomskole.

“Hierdie projek is deur ’n besonderse DeeEffer geïnspireer, wat ten spyte van sy fisieke gestremdhede, vir die skool se leerders gewys het dat onmoontlik slegs ’n woord is wat so maklik omskep kan word in moontlik,” staan daar op dié skool se webwerf oor die trust.

Die publiek is dalk nie altyd bewus van alles wat skole in hul gebied doen om gelyke geleenthede vir almal te skep nie, maar elkeen doen wat hulle kan om hul leerders te laat tuis voel by hul gekose skole.

DF Malan-leerders oral bedrywig

Altesaam nege leerders en twee onderwysers van die Hoërskool D.F. Malan vertrek op 28 Junie om aan die skool se jaarlikse gemeenskapsprojek in Zambië deel te neem. Hulle is (agter van links) Luceel Beukes, Alné van der Linde, Quinitah Heynes en Janeke Erasmus. Voor is Lize Smit, Dian Schoeman, Nadine Botes (onderwyser), Karla Basson en Charisa Geyers. Mischa Bornman en Celeste Wepener, onderwyser, was afwesig toe die foto geneem is. Die groep gaan die Foundation for Cross­cultural Education (FCE) se gemeenskapsopleidingsentrum in Koti in Eden naby Luanshya ondersteun. Hulle gaan in ’n nabye kampeerterrein bly en by verskeie van FCE se projekte betrokke raak. So gaan hulle onder meer hand bysit by FCE se kwekery, verskillende bouprojekte, die kombuis van die opleidingsentrum, die kliniek en die houtwerkfabriek.

Estea Marais (links) en Nicole Parker van die Hoërskool D.F. Malan het albei hul Unisa­ graad 5­klaviereksamen met lof (83% en 82% onderskeidelik) geslaag. Albei is in graad 9. Unisa se graad 5­klaviereksa­ men is tans die vereiste praktiese standaard vir graad 12­ musiek as vak. ’n Ander musiekleerder, Jana Wolmarans (gr. 10), het presteer deur by die Stellen­ bosse eisteddfod twee loftoekennings in klavier te behaal.

Kick off against crime

I

n June 2016, the Message Trust and Sports Chaplaincy South Africa (SCZA) teamed up to host the first ever KICK24 soccer event at Ajax Ikamva Grounds in Parow.

The aim of this event was to raise awareness of the scourge of gangsterism and crime in the communities and to promote these two charities, both of which are actively involved in the upliftment of young people in the toughest communities.

KICK24 will again be held this year with events partner Ajax at their Ikamva Grounds.

The event takes place on Friday from 17:00 to 22:00. The format this year will be slightly different, providing the opportunity for four teams to play against KICK24 teams of soccer professionals and celebrities, including

Die mikpunt van hierdie program, hoewel ’n motoriese program, is om voorskoolse kinders op ’n speelse manier te laat kennis maak met konsentrasie, fokus, dissipline en luister – aspekte wat die kind nodig het om suksesvol te kan funksioneer. Each game will be 50 minutes long (two 25minute halves) and teams will pay a fee, with all proceeds going towards the Message Trust and SCZA. SCZA exists to serve South Africa’s sporting community by providing comprehensive care and mentoring.

On the night, there will be mini competitions, a raffle and entertainment so fans can come and see the KICK24 team in action and have a great evening out.

There will also be a number of sponsorship opportunities, so corporates can support the cause to see crime and gangsterism kicked out of our society.

YOUNG CYCLISTS EXCEL: TWO FROM DF MALAN ON THEIR WAY TO NATIONAL CHAMPS

rannyGear Academy is proud to have been involved with the development of two of its cyclists, Luca Ruwiel (14) and Stefke Tolmay (15), from DF Malan High School. Both received their Western Province and Western Cape Cross-Country Marathon (XCM) colours – adding to the build-up of their final 2017 SA National MTB Cup Series race to determine the national champions of 2017.

Luca and Stefke have trained hard under the guidance of their coach and GrannyGear founder, Alex Kruger, and raced even harder to acquire the title of “champion” in 2016’s Western Cape XCM series. As they have been peddling through 2017, there is optimism that they will take their titles home again after the 2017 season, as they have been reigning victorious in almost all their races so far.

Stefke has taken first place in the Youth Girls category of the Western Cape CrossCountry Olympic (XCO) Series, as well as the Western Cape XCO Championship. She also finished second in the Youth Girls Category in the second South African Cup Series.

Memorable moments in India STEHAN SCHOEMAN Shihan Hennie Bosman (Bellville), chairman of Kyokushin-kan Africa, recently visited India for the first time, which turned out to be one of the most memorable moments of his career.

Bosman was joined by his son Henry, who is himself a respected black belt karateka, and both were treated like royalty.

“During our international training camp in Japan last month I was approached by Sensei Mihir Bag, the branch chief for India, with a request to assist at the Indian Camp at Digha in West Bengal, India.

“We had to fly to Kolkata and from there take a three- to four-hour trip by car to the holiday resort at the beach at Digha,” says Bosman.

The camp, which was close to the beach, played host to 500 students ranging from white belt to black belt, juniors to seniors, from West Bengal.

“In Kolkata we were welcomed by a whole group of karateka with flowers and a banner and we were blessed by women in traditional clothing.

“Our arrival in Digha was also an event, as we had a karateka guard of honour stretching for the 400 metres from the beach to the hotel, throwing flowers at us and blessing us.

“The weather was very hot and humid and we had to train from 05:00 to 09:00 and again from 17:00 to 19:00. We trained next

GrannyGear will be alongside DF Malan High School’s two cyclists at the upcoming fourth and final round of the 2017 SA National MTB Cup Series at Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.

“We are proud to have been with them every peddle stroke of the way, and are in high hopes that they will bring back the gold.

Winning is nice, but it’s all about having fun and knowing you did your best, both while preparing for the race and while racing,” says coach Alex as he aims to promote the sport of mountain biking among the youth, rather than just focusing on winning.

GrannyGear has formed an integral part of the mountain biking community and has been involved with numerous young cyclists, many of whom are taking to the podium after their races, just about every weekend.

Alex is a well-seasoned cyclist, having conquered the Cape Epic more times than most, and has built a platform for young cyclists to achieve their full potential in this rapidly growing sport.

Also, not everybody was able to understand English. But everyone tried their best and we really achieved much in explaining the techniques to be done the proper way. It was an honour for Henry and I to share our expertise with our fellow karateka. There are many promising students and I can only see them going from strength to strength,” says Bosman.

Hennie’s position in Kyokushin-kan has enabled him to see many parts of the world.

In the last few years he has taught at international training camps in the USA, Costa Rica, Russia, Denmark, the Seychelles, Australia, the Congo, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

In October he will be the chief instructor at a training camp for Central and South America to be held in Panama.

Nadat die Tygerberg-klub aanvanklik lelik laat slaplê het in die afgelope naweek se Superliga-rugbywedstryd teen die Universiteit van Kaapstad, het die Floridapark-manne tog byna sake in hul guns beklink.

Durbanville-Bellville was met 50-10 gans te sterk vir Noordelikes-Tygerberg in ’n ander kragmeting in die A-afdeling, terwyl Belhar in ’n vervroegde wedstryd met 18-10 met Brackenfell afgereken het. Op Floridapark het die tuisspan vir meer as die helfte van die wedstryd die Ikeys toegelaat om die spel te dikteer. Die gevolg was ’n agterstand van 0-20 vir die tuisspan vroeg in die tweede helfte. Maar toe vat Tygerberg vlam en druk vier verdoelde drieë in die laaste halfuur om net naelskraap met 28-30 te verloor.

In die B-afdeling van die Superliga het Kraaifontein sy derby-wedstryd teen Kuilsrivier met 14-10 gewen. Albei spanne het twee drieë gedruk, maar die Kraaie se beter stelskopwerk deur middel van die suksesvolle doelskoppe het hulle die pyp laat rook.

Hands & Heart het in ’n opwindende wedstryd met 29-29 die louere met Paarl gedeel.

Die program vir eerskomende naweek (tuisspan eerste) is: Ikeys t Durbell, Pniël Villagers t Belhar, Hamiltons t Tygerberg, Valsbaai t Noordelikes-Tygerberg (almal afd. A), Bellville t Kraaifontein (afd. B), Busy Bee t Goodwood, Lagunya t Scottsdene (afd. C).
