Three sisters make clean sweep at national awards T

he three sister publications at WP Media – TygerBurger, People’s Post and City Vision, once again ranked among the very best in the country at the annual Forum for Community Journalists’ (FCJ) Excellence Awards held on Friday night.

In the category for Best Corporate-owned Free Newspaper it was TygerBurger that took top honours – again!

Our sister People’s Post came in second, and the third place went to Cape Community Newspapers’ Tabletalk.

The three sisters then made a clean sweep in the Front Pages category, with People’s Post walking away with the top spot in this category for corporate-owned free newspapers. Their front page of the False Bay edition of 21 June 2016 was selected as the winner. TygerBurger and City Vision took second and third places respectively.

Die krisissentrum, wat vanuit ’n kantoor by die NG kerk Vredelust in Boston bedryf word, se hoofdoelwit is om ander se nood te verlig.

“Dit maak nie saak watter nood iemand het of waar hulle bly nie,” verduidelik Louise Spies, bestuurder van die sentrum.

Die sentrum voorsien eers in mense se basiese behoeftes en doen dan ’n assessering om hulle na die regte kundiges in die gebied te verwys.

Spies het vanjaar 230 mense tussen Januarie en Mei gekonsulteer.

“Ons het ’n groot behuisingsnood vir mense,” het Voigt by die geleentheid gesê.

“Daar is dwelm- en alkoholmisbruikprobleme en mense het geen kos of klere nie.”

Die krisissentrum help ook organisasies wat skenkings wil maak om by diegene uit te kom wat dit benodig.

Projek wat ’n vrou van Durbanville begin het om die plantegroei in Knysna ná die vernietigende brande te help hervestig, het behoorlik vlam gevat.

Chanel du Plooy het voorverlede Donderdag op haar WhatsApp-groepe genoem sy wil plante en bome insamel om te help om die plantegroei in Knysna te hervestig.

Voor sy haar oë kon uitvee, het haar Go Green Knysna-idee só gegroei dat sy ’n hele span vrywilligers moes kry om haar te help.

Binne ’n uur het Marcus Pawson, hoof van omgewingsake by Afriforum, en Chris Boshoff, omgewingsake-koördineerder by Afriforum, haar gekontak.

“Hulle gaan die donasies van die publiek inneem en ook help met vervoerkoste van plante van Kaapstad na Knysna. Hulle gaan ook help met die bemarking,” vertel sy.

“Dit het so vinnig versprei dat my foon tot laataand besig was met mense wat betrokke wou raak. Dit gaan woes met die projek. Ek het regtig nie gedink dit gaan so groot gaan nie,” het sy gesê.

Sy het ook kontak gemaak met mense wat die wilde diere in Knysna voer en almal was dadelik vuur en vlam om haar te help.

“Knysna, bekend vir sy immergroen woude, is ’n baie bekende deel van die Tuinroete. Net swart en grys, kaal woude het oorgebly. Ek en my span wil graag die groen terugplaas as simboliese kleur van vrede en rustigheid,” sê sy.

Hulle wil die eerste paar bome in September aanplant in samewerking met die Knysna-munisipaliteit. Hulle wil ook graag die

publiek by die projek betrek en daarvan deelmaak om die bome te gaan aanplant.

“Ons wil hiermee ’n verskil maak en die mense van Knysna weer hoop gee,” sê sy.

Toe volg die radio-onderhoude op onder meer Pretoria FM en RSG. Kwekerye van oraloor het haar gekontak en van afslag op plante aangebied tot hulp en opleiding aangebied met die plant van die plante en bome.

Ander het kompos, potgrond en ander materiaal belowe.

Atlete van ’n atletiekklub wat in Julie op Knysna aan ’n marathon deelneem, het ook aangebied om te help.

Kenners van inheemse bome het ook advies aangebied.

“Die projek is beslis lang termyn en ons gaan kyk of ons ook skole betrokke kan kry,” sê Du Plooy.

Sy het gevra dat skole hulle gewone kleredae hou ten bate van haar Go Green Knysna-projek.

“Ons vra dat elke skool R5 sal vra vir elke leerder om groen aan te trek op Lentedag, 1 September, vanjaar,” vra sy.

Die doel van die kompetisie is om te kyk watter skool die meeste geld sal insamel.

Die wenskool se geld sal gebruik word om ’n groot boom aan te koop. Dié boom sal in Knysna geplant word en ’n bronsplaatjie sal opgerig word met die skool se naam daarop.

Dié kompetisie sluit op 8 September.

End of the road for pedestrian gate?

A

popular pedestrian gate in Ridgeworth is facing possible permanent closure.

The gate leading from Hibiscus Street onto Durban Road is a safety concern, says councillor Taki Amira and the Ridgeworth Forum. Amira tabled a motion for the closure or daily locking and unlocking of the gate at the subcouncil 3 meeting held last week.

“I have been approached by residents as well as neighbourhood watches of the affected streets to have the gate closed,” Amira says in the motion.

The motion requests the City’s Recreation and Parks Department to commence with the final process of either closing the gate or having it locked and unlocked. In it Amira explains how developers were required to erect the gate during the establishment of Ridgeworth Estate in order to grant access from the Ridgeworth area to Durban Road.

“It must be remembered that at that time, safety was not as serious a concern as it is now,” he says.

With the growth in the area there has been a “significant increase” in homeless people entering the area and sleeping in the surrounding public areas.

“This has also brought into the area criminals who hide among the homeless.”

Amira says the gate is also used by criminals as an escape route after hours.

Residents were informed of this possible closure in March and were asked to

Many of the comments express concern about the inconvenience the closure of the gate will cause, as it would eliminate the residents’ current direct access to nearby shopping centres, offices and public transport.

“I am 79 years old and I need that open gate to get to Tygervalley Shopping Centre,” one resident says. “I do my shopping and visit the doctor, library, bank, hair salon and post office at the centre.”

It is also seemingly the main access for people using public transport and entering or exiting the estate. Some residents talk of a disabled man who won’t be able to do his daily tasks once the gate is closed.

The decision of what to do with the gate now rests with the City’s Recreation and Parks Department.

‘Dig out the roots of child abuse’

epresentatives of childcare organisations called for unity in fighting violence against children at a forum on Friday.

The forum, hosted by Community Chest at St George’s Cathedral in the City centre, was aimed at addressing and finding solutions to the rising number of cases of child abuse and murder.

“The murder of one child is disturbing enough, but realising that there have been 20 child murders over the past six months should provoke immediate action,” says Joan Daries, programme manager of Community Chest in the province.

According to the organisation, the number of children who have been killed this year increased to 26 in June.

Speaking at the forum on Friday was a panel made up of Lorenzo Davids of Community Chest, Eric Atmore, Warrant Officer Avron Peterson, Lucinda Evans of Philisa Abafazi Bethu, Andrew Lyon (chairperson of the Provincial Community Policing Forum), Valdi van Reenen le Roux of the Trauma Centre for Survivors of Violence and Torture, and Lilian Masebenza of Mhani Gingi Social Entrepreneurial Network.

During the forum NGO representatives expressed their dissatisfaction with the Western Cape government’s role in protecting children. They emphasised the need to get government involved, starting with the premier who has reportedly refused to approve a proposed commission of inquiry into child murders that was aimed at investigating pending cases and ensuring the protec-

tion of child safety rights.

A perceived lack of support from the police was also raised.

Evans said: “Parents who lose their children to violence wait a long time without getting justice, because relevant officials fail to perform their duties. Not enough resources are used in investigating these cases. If we cannot find solutions to these killings and abuse, government will have to put up a sign saying: ‘Welcome to Cape Town, where our children are slaughtered’.”

Several panel members recommended a focus on the roots of the problem, finding the causes and circumstances that lead to such senseless attacks.

Masebenza said: “Then we will find solutions within the individuals, the family and society. We cannot just deal with the symptoms.”

Lyon added that everyone has been affected by the ongoing violence and people need to stop shifting blame to the criminals and police, but should rather look at preventative measures and play a role in protecting every child in the community. He also said men must start doing introspection, and also play their part in empowering young boys to become better men.

Peterson said the police are doing their best to fight these crimes. He emphasised the importance of community involvement in making sure that justice is served by not hiding evidence or protecting criminals during investigations.

“It does not help us to investigate a case where evidence is hidden. If I come to your house asking about a criminal and you say the person is not there, you are not helping me. Let us work together,” he said.

Tech to heal queues at clinics Clinics may soon be receiving a technology injection, as the City of Cape Town commits several million rand to create two modernisation projects.

The City’s Health Department is investigating an electronic booking system for appointments at clinics. A similar investigation into digital patient records is underway.

These are the first steps in a much bigger technological makeover envisioned for the department. R5m has been budgeted to facilitate the process, says JP Smith, Mayco member for safety, security and social services.

“Sadly, public health is often synonymous with long queues. But just because this is the norm doesn’t make it right. The investment being made with this budget allows us to work towards changing the norm and will allow patients the option of booking an appointment with a healthcare professional instead of clinics running solely on a first-come-first-served model. Of course, emergency cases will continue to be attended to on arrival,” he says.

Currently, the only appointments available at City health facilities are for follow-up visits such as chronic diseases, child well-

ness and TB. Typically these appointments have been given by date only, which means patients arrive at the start of the day, sometimes before the clinic opens, to be first in the queue.

In the past year, however, an initiative in partnership with UWC is seeing more and more facilities using appointment times spread throughout the day.

Patients are encouraged to arrive at their appointment time only and as a result these facilities have reported decreases in clinic congestion and patient waiting times.

An electronic appointment system would be an invaluable tool, Smith says.

“Also, patient files are currently being kept and updated manually and stored at the clinics. The time and cost saving associated with storing and updating patient files electronically would be considerable,” says Smith.

The City has over 80 facilities providing a variety of health services.

Considerations like software, IT infrastructure and human resources would form the backbone of the investigation into an electronic records and appointment system. Factors such as theft and vandalism would also be a key consideration, he says.

Ideas for water trickling in A

s Cape Town is in the midst of its worst drought in 100 years, the City of Cape Town is planning to take a new “water resilience approach to water management”, says mayor Patricia de Lille in a statement.

“The council supported the creation of a water resilience task team under the leadership of the chief resilience officer, which has set about augmenting the City’s response to drought, ensuring that acute water shortages are avoided and transforming Cape Town’s water landscape into one that ultimately relies less on surface water,” she

says.

The City is expanding its efforts to find new sources of temporary water, De Lille adds.

“We cannot bank on there being sufficient rain in the remainder of winter to break the drought.

“It will take at least three consecutive winters of above-average rainfall to make a real difference to the availability of surface water,” she says.

City officials formally posted a request for ideas and information last Monday for solu-

cations along the seashore and at inland locations, she says.

“It is envisaged that the first plants would be available for production towards the end of August.

“The City would require these plants to be operational for at least six months, but might require the plants to be in operation for a longer period of time.

“The City will conduct regular water quality tests at each of these sites.”

Ideas can be submitted on the City’s website until Monday 10 July.

Jail could await water wasters

Complain to Menye A new City of Cape Town ombudsman has been appointed.

Mongezi Menye takes over from Mbulelo Baba who recently retired.

The office of the ombudsman investigates and facilitates complaints by residents about maladministration, injustice and poor service delivery by the City.

The ombudsman must provide a timely and effective assessment and investigation of complaints, explains deputy mayor Ian Neilson.

Residents flouting water restrictions could face steeper penalties or even jail time.

This as the City of Cape Town has appealed to the courts for tougher action to help tackle non-compliance with Level 4 rules.

City officials have negotiated that the maximum spot fine for a contravention be raised to R5000, rising to R10 000 or even a prison sentence for serious or repeat offences, explains Xanthea Limberg, Mayco member for informal settlements, water and waste services and energy.

Level 4 water restrictions remain in place indefinitely and could be intensified if need-

“Apart from safeguarding our current sustainability, we must think about building additional reserve capacity by continuing with the most hard-hitting water-saving efforts that we can muster. It may take a few seasons of normal rainfall for the dams to recover and we must bear in mind that we are expecting an even tougher summer in 2018,” she says.

“All consumers must continue to use less than 100 litres per person per day in total, whether at work, home, school or elsewhere.”

THINKING OUT LOUD

It’s just ‘bye’ for now; the legacy lives on I don’t like to complain, but when I want to complain, I will complain.

My complaint is against the person who decided that 60 years old puts me over the hill.

Yours truly turned 60 earlier this month and is now forced to go into retirement.

But don’t give up on me just yet!

Jokes aside, it’s been an exciting time, starting at the old Cape Herald in the early 1980s, seeing the birth of The Plainsman that led to Community Newspapers and then being at The Argus Tonight where my passion for the arts and culture could find an outlet.

A journey that started on the dusty streets of Diep River, but with a love for reading.

I was never trained as a journalist, but actually as a sort of electrician – but don’t tell anybody.

A lot has changed since I started this journey and there is just not enough space to go into A journey detail about it all, but I was glad to be that started part of writing apartheid, on the dusty against seeing the birth of the new South streets of Africa, and in later Diep River but years trying to make a difference with a love for through my work here at TygerBurger reading ... and People’s Post.

Circumstances led – Gary van Dyk to me coming here and I am thankful for being given the opportunity to work in the communities where I was assigned.

Many people have negative perceptions of many of the areas where I have worked, but my answer to them is that we tend to overlook the positive for the negative. Crime is there; it’s always been there, but amidst that I have loved showing the world that there are positive people out there trying to make a difference.

Through my love for music I was privileged to be part of two projects that highlight the good that exists in our disadvantaged communities. The first is the Delft Big Band. I watched with some pride how these young musicians grew into the professional group they are today. And then there’s the Jazz Yard Academy in Bonteheuwel. It started with one man who wanted to make a difference. And it is making a major difference – in so many young lives that could have been led astray. My job here is done. – Gary van Dyk

Verkeerd om honde uit te sit Ek het die berig (“Peace goes to the dogs”, 21/06) gelees en my mening is: Ek verstaan 100% mnr. Saunders se aanvanklike bekommernis oor die honde wat op die grensmuur geklim en ook een keer in sy erf geval het.

Ek sou ook bekommerd gewees het. Maar het hulle ooit gepraat oor die moontlikheid om die muur hoër te maak? Honde blaf, dis in hul natuur. My buurman se hond blaf ook gedurig, maar as ons almal tekere gaan oor ons bure se honde wat blaf of kinders wat konstant skree, gaan dit chaos afgee en ’n onplesierige wêreld wees om in te bly!

Die uiteinde is dat hierdie honde DBV toe is en waarskynlik uitgesit gaan word.

Dít is verkeerd en wreed.

Honde is meermale soos kinders in ’n huis en deel van die familie.

Ek is seker Terence het waarskynlik nie honde nie en is ook nie baie mal oor honde nie, en wou net van die honde ontslae raak.

Die feit dat hy ook nie van sy buurman hou nie, was net verdere aansporing.

Die ergste is om die berig sommer op die voorblad van TygerBurger te plaas en dan te sê as enigiemand anders ook probleme ondervind, moet hulle wetstoepassing skakel. Asof daar nie al genoeg honde in diereskuilings of die DBV is nie. Nee wat, dis regtig baie teleurstellend en stuur die verkeerde boodskap uit.

Dashing through Door de Kraal I am writing as a concerned resident of Door de Kraal. It seems that the traffic on Van Riebeeckshof Road is getting busier by the day.

Most of the cars come speeding up the hill, definitely going faster than the 60 km/h speed limit. The speed of the cars coming down Van Riebeeckshof Road is pretty well controlled by the permanent camera in place just after Jorgensens Street. Would it not be possible to put up a permanent camera or some other speed control device for traffic coming up the hill between Artillery and Jorgensens streets to control the speed of cars coming up the hill? This would make the road a lot safer for cars, pedestrians and cyclists.

Ware staatmakers in uur van nood Op Dinsdag 20 Julie het my linkerhand in ’n fratsongeluk in die lem van ’n elektriese saag beland. Ek het met die bebloede hand voetgeslaan na die spreekkamer van dr.

Camilla Moolman, waar ek sonder ’n afspraak opgedaag het. My opregte dank en waardering aan haar en haar ganse personeel vir die bystand en hulp wat hulle aan my tydens hierdie krisis verleen het. My wonde is skoongemaak, bloeding gekeer, verbind, medikasie is teen pyn verskaf en baie moeite is gedoen om my gemaklik te hou totdat die ambulans (wat hulle gereël het) my by die spreekkamer kom oplaai het en hospitaal toe geneem het.

Ook my opregte dank aan drs. Brits, Kuhn en ander, sowel as hul personeel by Tygerberg-hospitaal, wat te midde van ander krisisse, ’n koelkopbenadering gehandhaaf het en ’n professionele diens en kalmte geopenbaar het.

Ook my opregte dank aan dr. Africa wat die volgende oggend tydens ’n operasie van bykans twee uur lank my hand weer letterlik “aanmekaargewerk” het. My hand het behoue gebly nadat daar aanvanklik sprake was dat gedeeltes van ’n vinger geamputeer sou moes word.

In Canada, where I resided in the province of British Columbia for 15 years, it has been legalised; in various US states it has also been legalised.

This is Africa – what is this government’s problem with falling in line with the Western world?

Does Law Enforcement not have anything better to do than prosecute for cannabis possession?

I’m sure they do. How about all those farm murders and all the crime? Worry about law and order in this country and stop bothering peaceful people who like to smoke or grow their own weed.

Piqued at lack of peak hour control What is our useless traffic department going to do about the lawlessness of taxi drivers?

Where are the traffic cops during peak hour traffic in the mornings and evenings when taxi drivers put our lives at risk with their bad driving, or do the traffic laws not apply to them? “Die TygerArea-kunsteprogram en Tygerfest wil graag alles wat reeds in die gebied gebeur belig en help bemark, maar dit ook aanvul met aanbiedings wat mense op allerlei maniere bewus sal maak van dié streek.”

Die idee vir TygerFest het in 2015 begin posvat toe prof.

Om alles bymekaar te bring is Tygerfest in Maart vanjaar as ’n nuwe winsgewende maatskappy geregistreer. Die maatskappy se werk bestaan uit die jaarprogram (met eie aanbiedings en bestaande aanbiedings in die gebied), asook die TygerArea-kunsteprogram en ’n klein jaarlikse fees.

Anroux Marais, Wes-Kaapse minister van kultuursake en sport, wat ook by die geselligheid was, het gesê haar departement ondersteun die projek ten volle.

“Kultuur het ’n manier om mense saam te bind,” het sy gesê.

Daar is reeds vanjaar ’n paar items om na uit te sien, onder meer ’n kuier-en-kunsveiling wat op 26 Julie by die SPL gehou gaan word. ’n Galakonsert gaan ook op 12 Augustus by die Hoërskool D.F. Malan plaasvind, waar ’n massakoor onder meer gaan optree.

Van Zyl sê hoewel hulle tans fondse soek, is hul idee om die program geleidelik selfvolhoubaar te maak.

Belangstellendes word uitgenooi om by te dra tot die sukses van die projek.

According to Wesley Miller, Trevor Maasdorp and Dylon Burgess their device, which is to be inserted into the cistern of the toilet, could potentially help save the City of Cape Town 40 to 60 million litres of water per day.

The device is based on the concept of placing a brick or bottle of water inside the cistern of a toilet in an effort to displace a certain amount of water.

Miller, however, conducted research on the brick method and found it to be unsustainable, as the brick would be prone to corrosion, dissolving and algae formation.

“The algae would grow within the cistern causing various problems, such as a leaky toilet,” explains Miller.

The FlushBuddy, which is made of PVC plastic, aims to combat this problem by being coated in an antimicrobial substance that prevents any type of dissolution or algae growth on the bag.

“The bag requires zero maintenance and a single unit can last between 10 and 20 years,” explains Maasdorp.

The entrepreneurs say that they developed the FlushBuddy with the City’s water crisis in mind.

“We want to do our part by coming into the market to make some type of difference,” says Maasdorp.

How the FlushBuddy works is that it is filled with two litres of water and then fitted into the cistern of the toilet.

When water re-enters the system after a flush it will fill with two litres less due to the presence of the device.

Maasdorp explains that with the FlushBuddy their objective was to develop a product that is easy, effective and affordable.

“The product requires no technical expertise to fit and no maintenance, making it easy to roll out in order to save water,” says Maasdorp.

Miller, Maasdorp and Burgess have presented the product to the City and are awaiting a response with regard to having it be used by the City in an effort to save water.

“If the City were to buy into our product it would only cost them a mere R10.50 per

unit,” says Burgess.

Meanwhile the entrepreneurs have considered other options if the City were not to be interested in it at this stage.

“We can sit back and wait for feedback from the City or we can go the crowd-funding route where we could sell three units at R100,” explains Burgess.

They would, however, prefer to have the City involved, as they would be able to get the product into more homes and save more water.

Walk the dog; take breaks every hour and do jumping jacks. If you have a set of stairs, see who can walk upstairs backwards the fastest. Park in the furthest parking bay at the shopping centre so that you have to walk the distance to the entrance. “Find a way to incorporate exercise into your normal daily activity,” says Arbuckle.

“Moderate activity increases brain activity and generates endorphins to help your children stay motivated and positive at school.”

Remember, habits that are adopted during childhood and teenage years are likely to roll over into adulthood.

T

here’s a new twist to this year’s Trek4Mandela summit of Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for sanitary towels for thousands of marginalised schoolgirls in South Africa.

Chris Dippenaar (40) from Durbanville will accompany previous summit climber Richard Mabaso, chief executive officer of the Imbumba Foundation and founder of both the Caring4Girls and Trek4Mandela projects, and a group of about 30 other people on his first Kilimanjaro climb this year.

But it’s not going to be an ordinary trek...

Dippenaar plans to summit Kilimanjaro with a bicycle strapped to his back – and then ride it down. He is going to do this with Sibusiso Vilane from Johannesburg, the first black man to summit Mount Everest and who will also be summiting his 21st Kilimanjaro this year.

Mabaso and a dedicated band of like-minded philanthropists aim to reach their goal of supplying sanitary towels to two million schoolgirls by 2020.

Research has shown that girls from marginalised communities who cannot afford sanitary towels can miss up to 50 days of school every year due to menstrual challenges – decreasing their chances of ever using their learning to break out of the cycle of poverty, Dippenaar says. He has three preteen daughters of his own, Mia (12), Inge (10) and Nina (8). He wants to inspire children to follow their passion and show that the impossible is possible through “dreaming big, hard work and perseverance”.

An avid mountain biker, Chris regularly turns tourists’ heads as he trains in the gorges of Table Mountain with his bicycle of 11kg strapped to his backpack.

Since January he has been training in the Platteklip Gorge twice a week and every sec-

ond month in the Drakensberg to prepare.

He thinks it’s a “travesty” that young girls from marginalised communities should miss school for not having something so many of their peers take for granted.

Dippenaar is an entrepreneur who began his career in retail sales at 16 years of age, making and then selling home-made ties out of the boot of his car to flea-market vendors.

As the group operations director of the Presidential Group he is taking a work sabbatical for four months to get super fit, raise funds and recalibrate what to do with his life going forward.

“I’m busy recalibrating a new direction

for my life and want to connect with organisations that have a real heart for social initiatives – something that’s blended into their DNA,” he says.

“And, of course, tailoring it to involve cycling is the cherry on top of the cake for me.

Richard is an amazing and inspiring social entrepreneur and epitomises the values I hold dear,” he adds.

An optimist at heart, he says cycling down Kilimanjaro will be the ride of his life – and a sure way to beat mountain sickness by losing altitude as quickly as possible.

“A breathtaking way to do good, you could say,” he laughs.

The Trek4Mandela expedition sets off on their epic adventure on 12 July and will summit on Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July.

he R270 000 gift of hearing a little girl recently received has been ripped away after part of her cochlear implant got lost and was presumably taken in a shoe store.

“She keeps on asking for it (the implant) and touching her ears,” says Millicent Worship, the grandmother of Leah Roodt (one year, 11 months).

“It’s a huge loss. She can’t hear at all now.

It’s such a terrible thing that happened.”

Leah, from Athlone, received a cochlear implant last year when radio station KFM heard of her plight and organised donations of around R270 000.

The tale led many to tears when Worship was heard crying and shouting for joy on air.

After her appointment the family went shopping at the Jordan Footwear Factory Shop.

When they left the store Leah’s grandfather realised the outside part of her cochlear implant was missing (the rest of the device is under her skin).

Thinking the device had simply fallen off, they rushed back inside where a fruitless search ensued.

Security footage shows a man with dreadlocks and dark clothing kicking the device to a spot where it was difficult to see.

He is then seen picking up the device and walking out of the store.

Mariette Nosworthy, an early interventionist at Carel du Toit Centre who works with Leah, says people easily mistake the cochlear implants for earphones.

“It is actually of no value to anyone else.

It is programmed specifically to her.”

Nosworthy says the loss is a tragedy, as Leah was able to learn speech because of the implant. She is completely deaf without it.

Leah is no stranger to difficult times. She was born with congenital rubella syndrome, also known as German measles.

Her mother, Carmelita, unknowingly contracted the condition while she was pregnant and it was passed on to Leah.

This illness affected her sight, hearing and heart.

She had cataracts that were operated on and now wears contact lenses.

She also has two holes in her heart.

T

he Heart of Hope support group for parents of children with congenital heart defects hosted a high tea at the St Albans Church Hall in Goodwood in an effort to drum up support for founder Monique Kemp’s trip to Barcelona, Spain.

Kemp will be attending the 7th World Congress of Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery from 16 to 21 July where she will be presenting the work that she has been doing with the support group for the past five years.

“My work with Heart of Hope is focused mainly on raising awareness of the defect, as many people are not aware that it is the number one birth defect in the world, with one in 11 babies being born with it,” explains Kemp.

In attendance at the tea were doctors and nurses who work with children with congenital heart defects (CHDs) at Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital, supporters of Heart of Hope, as well as friends, family and colleagues of Kemp.

She started the support group after her son Daniel was born with CHD, a problem with the structure of the heart, in 2010.

“I found the journey with Daniel to be a very lonely one so I wanted to start a group where I could support parents who were going through the same situation so that they would not feel alone,” says Kemp.

She started the support group in 2012 and for the past five years has been working with mothers who have children with the defect.

There are currently six mothers, dubbed “Heart Moms”, who work together to support one another in the

challenges they face as mothers of children with CHD. “We are one another’s pillars of strength,” says Kemp.

Fellow Heart Mom, Candice Oliver, says that Kemp helps parents to understand what is a very traumatic experience.

“She supports parents by connecting them with other parents. Sometimes she just comes to sit with you to show her support,” says Oliver.

Oliver has known Kemp since the birth of her daughter three years ago.

“We knew that our daughter would be born with CHD before her birth,” explains Oliver.

“After my daughter was born, the nurses at the hospital contacted Monique to come and see us. She took the time to explain the process to me in a non-medical way, simply speaking to me as one mother to another,” says Oliver.

Apart from running Heart of Hope, Kemp also holds down a full-time job at the Department of Human Settlements. She says that it is quite difficult balancing her time, but the work she is doing in terms of CHD is much needed.

Kemp says that she is excited to attend the congress in Barcelona to see what other CHD groups are doing.

Kemp says that she couldn’t have arranged the high tea without the assistance of the Heart Moms and the Greenmarket Square and Claremont branches, which provided the snacks for the afternoon.

The Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) is pleased to announce that entries are now open for its 49th popular annual fundraising event, the Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk, in association with Lucky Star.

The event will be taking place at the Green Point Cricket Club on Sunday 27 August 2017 and will include two routes along the Sea Point Promenade: a 10km walk starting at 07:30 am and a 5km walk starting at 08:00 am. Every person who enters will receive a medal.

Due to popular demand, X Factor winners FOUR will once again be entertaining the walkers as they cross the finish line at the stadium.

Other entertainment includes a high-energy performance by top South African pop singer, Lakota Silva. A host of food and refreshment stalls will also be available for everyone’s enjoyment.

This year PSFA aims to emphasise four areas in which food enables children to

reach their true potential. The awareness campaign is based on four key pillars that represent four core reasons to provide children with nutritious meals, namely food for thought (food enables young learners to think critically), food for cr8tivity (healthy meals enable the mind to be creative), food for play (balanced meals give learners the energy to perform in sport and general play), and food for all (together we can make sure that all our youth have access to healthy food).

PSFA calls everyone to join them in their fight against childhood hunger by entering this special family event at the cost of only R50 per person. Each entry fee will enable PSFA to provide 20 underprivileged hungry schoolchildren with a nutritious cooked breakfast and lunch for an entire day! Entries are limited to 13 000 people.

Not everyone is able to walk Blisters for Bread, so PSFA is encouraging both Cape Town locals and the rest of South Africa, whether members of the public, businesses or schools, to consider making a monetary contribution. This can be done by logging onto the website at www.psfa.org.za. 100% of all donations made to PSFA will go towards school feeding, and donations are tax deductible.

Blisters for Bread, which was started in 1968 by concerned staff and learners at Savio College in Lansdowne and handed over to PSFA to manage, has grown from strength to strength and has become a highlight on the Cape Town events calendar.

Last year, a total of 13 624 people partici-

pated in the event. Thanks to entry fees received, the event managed to raise a total of R681 200, enabling PSFA to provide over 1724 disadvantaged children with a nutritious breakfast and lunch at school for an entire year!

PSFA is a registered non-profit organisation that is dedicated to feeding hungry children while at school. Established in 1958, PSFA has to date served over 1.5 billion meals to underprivileged schoolchildren. PSFA currently provides daily nutritious cooked meals to over 27 000 children at 160 primary, secondary and specialneeds schools, as well as Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres, safe parks and colleges throughout the Western Cape.

Le Clos inspireer talle jonges by swembad AVRIL FILLIES

ie inspirerende boodskap van die Olimpiese swemmer Chad le Clos onlangs by die pret-swembyeenkoms in die Blue Downs-binnenshuise swembad, het lede van die Hoërskool Modderdam- en die Modderdam Aquatics-swemklub aangespoor om hul swemmery ernstig op te neem.

Die skool en die swemklub neem weer op Saterdag 9 Julie aan die volgende pretswembyeenkoms in Blue Downs deel.

“Slegs genooide skole en swemskole is na die byeenkoms genooi. Sedert ons leerders en swemmers met Le Clos kennis gemaak het, is hulle nou meer gemotiveerd,” het Gadija Samuels, onderwyser en swemafrigter by die skool, gesê.

Volgens haar was die atmosfeer by sy onlangse besoek elektries en honderde swemmers was oorgretig om net aan hul held se hand of klere te raak en om hom in hul midde te verwelkom.

“Sy toespraak is met luide applous begroet en hy het die swemmers toegespreek oor hoe belangrik die rol van ouers en afrig-

ters is. Sy motto in die lewe is eenvoudig: ‘glo in jouself, reik na jou droom en moenie jou droom opgee nie’.

“Chad het vir ons uitgestaan as ’n nederige mens met vaste beginsels, maar met sy swemvoete beslis vas op die aarde. Hy het benadruk dat hy van die klein dorpie Pinetown naby Durban kom en nooit die voorreg gehad het om in ’n Olimpiese standaardswembad soos die een in Blue Downs, te oefen nie,” het Samuels gesê.

Hy het die swemmers aangemoedig om hard te oefen sodat hulle ook eendag die SA Olimpiese swemspan kan haal. Hy het ook genoem dat hy al op talle plekke in die wêreld was, maar nog nooit sulke prag en warmte soos in die Kaap ervaar het nie!

Modderdam Aquatics was die algehele voorlopers tydens die oggendsessie van die gala waar swemmers aan 25 m, 50 m, 100 m en aflosse in die vryslag, borsslag, vlinderslag en vryslag deelgeneem het.

Die middagsessie was vir die leer-om-teswemgroep, het Samuels gesê.

GETTING PEOPLE OFF THE STREETS - HUMANELY The City of Cape Town recognises that it has a duty to manage people living on the streets. In 2014 it created a Street People Reintegration Unit for the reintegration or reunification of street people into society or place of origin.

The unit works with other City departments specialising in this field, such as Law Enforcement.

The unit attends to about 1 000 homeless person complaints/queries per month. It offers social services to street people including referral to shelters and access to Expanded Public Works Programmes, assistance with securing IDs and social grants,as well as social assistance for reunification with the family.

Some successes (June 2016 to June 2017) • Street people issues closed – 14 632 • Street people engaged and assisted - 2660 • Persons reunified with families and off the street - 82 • People placed in shelters and supported during the recent storm - 343 Street people cannot be forced to accept assistance. To achieve long-term results, the unit must engage with people individually and work with them to understand and address their circumstances. Kids learn new skills at rugby coaching clinic Kids between the ages of three and 13 years attended the rugby skills coaching clinic of Philip Snyman, captain of the SA Sevens and World Sevens Champions, on Saturday 24 June at Bellpark Primary in Bellville. The kids learned how to pass the ball, the

proper way to tackle your opponent, and also just to have fun. The fathers were more concerned about their kids not scoring tries and were on the field when the youngsters’ tears started flowing.

or the past year these young sailors have been competing in regattas all over South Africa to qualify for upcoming prestigious events like the Optimist African Championships and World Championships.

Two provincial regattas are required, along with a national regatta, just to be eligible for a selections regatta. At the selections regatta the top five sailors are given the opportunity to participate in the Optimist African as well as the Optimist World championships.

These 11 sailors, with six going to the African Championships in Egypt and five to the World Championships in Thailand, have been training hard for the past few months at various venues such as Granger Bay and Langebaan. The weather on some occasions has been extreme, yet these brave young sailors still head out on the water for training.

Optimist national coach, Claire Walker, who will be travelling with them, has had some assistance from Olympian Roger Hudson, so these sailors have had a massive learning curve.

The 2017 Optimist African Championships will be held at the Montazah Water Sports Club from 30 June to 6 July, and will be sailed in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Six of the sailors, Chiara Fruet (14, CPT), Ross McKinnon (14, CPT), Helen Jansen van Vuuren (14, JHB), Alex Weiderholz (13, KZN), Tristan Tomlinson (15, CPT) and Bryan Carstens (13, CPT), will travel with their manager, Cal Tomlinson, who has had years of experience in sailing, as well as Walker who has a master’s degree in Sport Science.

tion. The event will be held in the warm azure blue waters of Alexandria, Egypt, where there is usually a constant light breeze and fairly flat waters. But don’t be fooled – it can also be very strong with occasional big waves.

Five of the sailors will leave a week later for Thailand where they will compete in the World Championships from 10 to 21 July at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club (RVYC), which is the premier sailing club and centre of sailing in Thailand, located in a secluded cove between Pattaya and Jomtien.

These sailors are Matt Ashwell (14, SA National Champion, CPT), Alex Falcon (14, CPT), Jared Tyler (12, CPT), Karl Hofmeyr (14, CPT) and Chiara Fruet (14, CPT) who is attending both events.

The manager will be Fabrizio Fruet who has attended many overseas regattas with his daughter Chiara.

Thailand’s waters pose a challenge for South Africans, so part of the training took place in Langebaan where there are very strong tidal currents.

he draw for the Cape Town leg of the 2017 Engen Knockout Challenge took place on Tuesday 20 June at the River Club in Observatory.

The eagerly anticipated u.17 event takes place from Friday 30 June to Sunday 2 July at Vasco da Gama Football Club in Parow.

Cape Town’s football fraternity was out in force for the draw. In attendance were SAFA Cape Town vice-president and deputy director in the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Bennet Bailey, along with Engen Knockout Challenge Cape Town tournament director, Imraan Morgan, 2017 Engen Knockout Challenge Cape Town ambassador, Brent Carelse, as well as South African football legends Hans Vonk, Donnie Ronnie, Duncan Crowie and Noel Cousins.

Coaches of participating teams from as far afield as Helderberg were also present to witness the event and to discover who their opponents are in the group stages of the preeminent youth football event.

Speaking at the draw, Engen’s group sponsorship manager, Brad Bergh, urged the young players participating in the tournament to use it as a stepping stone to launch their professional careers.

“This is where it all starts, and Engen is delighted to be a part of the development of football at grassroots level,” said Bergh.

SAFA Cape Town vice-president, Bennet Bailey, lauded Engen’s commitment to grassroots football.

“It’s a fact that sport plays an important role in shaping the future of our young people.

“Not only has Engen, via the Engen Knockout Challenge, assisted in the development of our local players, but local football administrators have also benefitted by being involved in the organisation of a major tournament like the Engen Knockout Challenge,” said Bailey.

“It is tournaments such as this that enable teams and players to test their ability to play at the highest level. To the coaches I want to say, treat these players as a father would a son; take care of them and ensure that they stay focused.”

The Engen Knockout Challenge ambassador for Cape Town, Brent Carelse, said he is proud to be associated with the tournament. “I started my football career at a very young age right here in Cape Town.

Succeeding to play at the highest level was always my goal,” said Carelse, who went on to star for Hellenic, Ajax Cape Town, Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United and Bafana Bafana.

“I want to encourage all the players participating in this tournament to give their

best, as it is tournaments such as the Engen Knockout Challenge that provide the platform for your footballing talent, showing the scouts in attendance that you are the next star on the horizon.

“Make the most of each opportunity, work hard, love the game and stay focused. Your journey starts here!”

Reigning Engen Knockout Cape Town champions Old Mutual were drawn in Group 3, alongside Grassy Park United, Riverside Rangers and Fish Hoek FC.
