DESIGNER PROFILE Hello! My name is Tyler Schwab and I am a graphic designer and artist. I recently graduated from SUNY Fredonia with a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design. I also recently interned with the amazing marketing and branding agency, Block Club, in the fall of 2014. For my work, I aim to achieve a clean and beautiful design style. I try to keep things simple in my artwork. In my opinion, there is strength in subtlety. When I’m not designing, I have many other things to keep me occupied. I absolutely love watching and playing soccer. And I’ve been doing it for the past 12 years. So you can probably call me a fanatic. I also love hitting the slopes in the winter on my snowboard. It’s great to breathe in the cold CONTACT ME

KHRAW THAI COOKBOOK BOOK DESIGN SUNY Fredonia (December 2014) Adobe InDesign This is the last typography project I completed at SUNY Fredonia before I graduated. In class we were assigned the cuisine of a certain culture or nationality. As seen to the right, I was given the food of Thailand to work with. The book itself is 64 pages with almost 30 different recipes divided into five categories: appetizers & snacks, salads, soups & curries, stir-fries, and desserts & sweets. The book also contains an introduction to Thailand and the cuisine and a comprehensive index to help a reader find whatever they’re looking for. The characters from the Thai language are some of the most beautiful in the world and I wanted to highlight those in the book even though it’s predominantly in English. The food is great too though!

TYPOGRAPHIC GRIDS LAYOUT DESIGN SUNY Fredonia (September 2014) Adobe InDesign This is a project I completed early in my final semester at SUNY Fredonia. The aim of the assignment was to learn more about typographic grids. The plan was to use manuscript, column, and modernist grids to learn more about layout design. The exercise consisted of 30 different layouts using each type of grid system, so this is just a small selection of them. Another thing to note is that the content didn’t matter as much as the structure and design did. I decided to use Ukrainian tourism as my content since it is a broad subject to work with, yet still neutral. The dotted lines on each image show the break between pages since these are two page designs.

THE ROOTS GIG POSTER POSTER DESIGN SUNY Fredonia (March 2014) Adobe InDesign This was one of the most fun projects I’ve ever worked on. Simply because it entailed listening to music a lot. And I already do that anyway! Unfortunately, this wasn’t for an actual So for this assignment, we were randomly assigned a band by drawing names from a hat. As shown on the right, I chose The Roots. The Roots are well known now as the house band on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, but they were a prominent band before that too. I really wanted to go with a retro minimalist look for this poster and it definitely looks that way. The colors feel very retro while the design and illustration are very minimal.

BABY SHOWER INVITATION LAYOUT DESIGN Freelance Work (July 2014) Adobe Illustrator This is a simple baby shower invitation that I designed for a client in the summer of 2014. A lot of the imagery speaks for itself in the design. Blue was chosen as the color because the baby would be a boy. The family really loves Disney and wanted the shower to be Disney themed so I added Mickey Mouse ears to the umbrella to show that.

INSYTE CONSULTING ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT DESIGN Block Club (October 2014) Adobe InDesign Insyte Consulting has been a client of Block Club for a long time. Block Club had a certain style of ads that they had been running for Insyte for a while at that point. It just so happened that while I was there, they were looking to refresh their advertisements and I had the chance to design them. Insyte Consulting is a WNY based company that specializes in helping manufacturing and technology companies succeed. Insyte’s tag line includes the three words, innovation, growth, and profit, but these advertisements are about growth mainly. The bold industrial quotes are meant to appeal to the types of companies that Insyte wants to help and they certainly engage in that way with the viewer.

HUNGER BOOK COVER BOOK COVER DESIGN SUNY Fredonia (May 2014) Adobe Illustrator Hunger is a Norwegian novel published first in 1890 by Knut Hamsun. The book chronicles the protagonist’s struggle as he tries to gain the affection of a woman he meets in the first act. The protagonist is a writer and to make money he writes sparingly for the local papers. The cover concept comes from the idea of the pencil being the primary tool of the writer and from the mental state of the protagonist. Throughout the book the main character is slowly going insane so the idea is that the scattered ends of the pencils represents the scattered ideas that the protagonist has.

BEYOND 35 LOGO LOGO CONCEPTING Block Club (November 2014) Adobe Illustrator Beyond 35 is the branding for the upcoming City of Buffalo’s recycling campaign. On average, Buffalo recycles only 20% of it’s waste but the city was looking for ways to change that. In comes Beyond 35, a name that challenges Buffalo to exceed the national recycling average of 34% by 2016. The logo itself is wonderfully simple, big and bold, modern, and most importantly, human; there is a subtle handmade, personal and friendly quality. The O in “Beyond” is replaced with a custom recycling mark to explicitly convey that this is about recycling. And it was designed to have wide-ranging appeal. Also, keeping in mind the types of places that this branding would be placed, a separate brandmark was created that would live separately from the main wordmark. An instance where the brandmark might be better suited would be on recycling bins.

SUNY FREDONIA EVENT CALENDAR POSTER DESIGN SUNY Fredonia (April 2014) Adobe InDesign In my typography 1 class, I was tasked with designing a poster for the arts center at SUNY Fredonia for the spring of 2014. I also had to utilise a grid in some way. The grid for this poster is more experimental compared to a manuscript, column, or modernist grid in nature since it is diagonal.

ALL IN THE FAMILY STORY BOARDING SUNY Fredonia (December 2014) Adobe Illustrator So this is one of the more interesting projects I’ve ever worked on. And that’s because the story is rather funny to think about. So for my final graphic design project, I was tasked with story boarding an interesting story that originates from my family. The story is that my great, great Aunt Marge passed away and in her will she requested that she be cremated and buried where she grew up, which was in New York City. Well my family decided to mail her from Buffalo to there. They didn’t drive her down, and I’m not sure why, but as seen in the story, she doesn’t arrive. And that’s the story of how my great, great Aunt Marge got lost in the mail. Something to note though is that this happened years ago before the invention of cell phones and online mail tracking, so I added those to the story to modernise it a little bit.

BLOCK CLUB BRAND REFRESH LOGO CONCEPTING Block Club (December 2014) Adobe Illustrator While interning at Block Club, I was given the task to try to refresh the company’s logo branding. Block Club has had the same logo for awhile now and with the amount of growth the company has achieved in the past year, they felt that it was time to move forward with a new brand that better represents them. This proposed logo absolutely conveys the message the company wants to tell. Firstly, the wordmark part of the brand has moved on from lowercase to uppercase to show growth and maturity. Secondly, the brandmark is still a block or cube but it much more dynamic than the old brand. There is a sense of movement in this logo. And lastly, the idea of the impossible cube is introduced. The impossible cube is an optical illusion that makes the block appear to change perspective when looking at it different ways. The impossible cube idea is successful because it communicates the message that nothing is impossible with Block Club.
