Open Zone (Balcony & Courtyard) Greenary is one of the important concepts of the Commons. Unlike some projects with one large courtyard in the centre, the Commons choose to separate it into several small courtyards to enhance different feeling for the residents. Movements within the buidling will vary and become creative.
Nature Ventilation According to the wind direction of Brunswick, north side will experience wind the most; the wind from east side is slightly smaller than the west side. To achieve cross ventilation inside the building, open balcony and courtyards are applied to the program.
Sustainability On the rooftop level, it consists of both communal space and sustainable facilities. - Productive Garden: allows residents to grow their own vegetable and plants - Solar PV Panels: reduce usage of electricity Yilin Tu 964532

Design Stataement - V.1 Site: 86-88 Summerhill Rd, Reservoir, VIC
Under the influence of pandemics, people have to face various restrictions and less connection to nature and the community. Although our society has started to revive on track, the workload and living density pressure were still problematic. As one of the diverse precincts, the city of Darebin has the potential to establish a better living community and enhance the relationship with nature and surroundings. Based on the site analysis of Darebin, there are three main living typologies (Individual House, Apartments, and Townhouse), which contain a large amount of greenery. However, the connection with the exterior and natural surroundings is still weak. Hence, this project aims to create opportunities for reconnecting nature and enhancing linkages between the house and the pedestrian, furthermore, the relationship between the residents and the community. Moreover, to create a more welcoming but safer living community, a considerable design strategy for each side of the site is essential to the project. Especially the passive surveillance for the pedestrians. As the majority of the living group in Darebin is families, it is essential for them to feel safe and enjoy the natural environment at the same time. Despite families, students and young couples also should take into consideration in our design, affordable and flexible living style should be their first choice.

Design Stataement - V. 2 - Conceptual Design
Under the influence of pandemics, people have to face various restrictions and less connection to nature and the community. As one of the diverse precincts, the city of Darebin has the potential to establish a better living community and enhance the relationship with nature and surroundings.
“ Aims to establish a friendly community that serves both sociologically and ecologically.”
Public circulation like stairs and corridors not merely function as services, but also as the bridge linking the residents together. Communal space is essential to collaborations (especially for families) and could offer additional facilities for residents to improve their daily life - for instance, shared kitchens, public lounges and open workshops. However how a public circulation could be treated as one of the communal zones is something I would like to propose in my design. Besides, from a future point of view, to design a sustainable living project, Greenery Space is one of the crucial standards to achieve and evaluate. Green walls, green corridors and productive gardens all contain a sense of sustainability and will be treated as communal zone. Hence, combining these components together will conduct a new housing typology on the site. Public circulation and Communal Space will merge together to enhance the relationship between residents and community, where Nature will become part of daily life both visually and physically.

“Creating visual connections across the other levels as well as with the street and the courtyard.”
“ The open to sky courtyard is spanned above by a bridge that connects the two arms of the residential unit for the owners. ”
This project also used grid system to define the solids and the voids like my initial design. However, it conducts a more considerable thinking of the solar access and visual connection. The public corridor is warpped around the central courtyard space, where residents could get equal access to the courtyard, pedestrian and the backyard.

Initial Massing
Refine Elevation
Comparing to the initial design, the latest version is about increasing the viration of the rap to accompany the living environment. The pitched roof is designed for water recycling for the central garden and other greenery. More hierarchical journey is applied to the project.

Precedent Study (plan arrangement) - BMT House
“The functional units were formed in a natural and continuous fashion, with private and common areas being clearly yet gently separated.”
https://www.archdaily.com/979324/bmt-house-ka-studio-plus-ad9-architects?ad_medium=gallery The BMT House is designed by AD9 Architects and K.A Studio located in Vietnam. The two-storey house consists two parts, the main building and the green garden. The initial perpose is to live with nature and blending into the local context. Several Interesting components - Upper floor shared corridor - In-between greenery - Zig-zag living units - Organic shape
The gaps between each unit allow an extra view towards the garden space, which also ensure a sense of privacy. But all the greenery is exterior, what about introducing part of them inside the unit, rather than viewing only.

Precedent Study (plan arrangement) - Garden House
The Garden House by Nest Architect is quite interesting in plans. The division walls and the vision towards the garden offer a mysterious sense of the house. The size of the windows will vray according to the sense of privacy and views. The overall idea is similiar to my design, trying to enhance the exploring feeling within the house and ensure the natural connection at the same time.

Besides, same problem as the ground floor plan, the solid sense from the walls enclose the public space and the greenery. How could people visually connect to the landscape through solid walls?

Precedent Study (Interior Landscape) - Office Design in Ho Chi Minh City / 07BEACH + Studio Happ
The idea of green landscape is well engaged with the interior in this precedent. The curved landscape functions as the divisions and the relaxing zone for people. However, this is not real landscape, but carpet for visual similarity.

The landscape zone is positioning close to the glazing area, where the real plants could get enough sunlight. From the section you can get a sense how people gonna occupy the sitting space and look outside the windows.

Precedent Study (Interior Greenery) - LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA
Interms of landscape, this exhibition used plenty of plants to form different circulations within the space. The pathway among the plants also forms some sitting area for people to chat and enjoy the view. However, it is not necessary to adopt all these ideas to my design, too much information will make the plans too complicated.

Precedent Study (hierarchical levels)
Phoenix House / Sebastian
How to deal with level changes but maintain the accessibility of the lower level? The precedents here introduce the idea of the sunken space with slopes or nature ground level. Hence, the backyard space of my site creates a sunken garden space for ground floor units to enter and occupy. On one hand the sunken space fix the natural light access problem, and on the other hand offers an alternative movements for residents.

Studio 35 - Transition: Housing
Feedbacks: For now, the elevation is more like a image rather than a real project, thinking about how to create a more realistic version (shaodows? textures?). The materiality of the facade should be clear enough to tell. Moreover, the surrounding context should be detailed, as well as the ground conidtion.
Add more details for the surrounding conditions, existing greenery and materiality. Trying to emphasize the importance about “blending into the community”.

GREEN JOURNEY
Under the influence of pandemics, people have to face various restrictions and less connection to nature and the community. As one of the diverse precincts, the city of Darebin has the potential to establish a better living community and enhance the relationship with nature and surroundings.
“ Aims to establish a friendly community that serves both sociologically and ecologically.”
Public circulation like stairs and corridors not merely function as services, but also as the bridge linking the residents together.
“ The idea of a growing landscape will occupy the public space, offering a ‘green journey’ for residents to explore.”
From a future point of view, to design a sustainable living project, Greenery is one of the crucial standards to achieve and evaluate. Green walls, and green corridors both contain a sense of sustainability and will be accessible to residents. Besides, the layout of each unit is quite unique, as the design wants to ensure the balance between the living space and the “Green Journey”. Hence, combining these components together will conduct a new housing typology, while the “growing landscape” serves as the Journey for exploration. Public circulation and Communal Space will merge together to enhance the relationship between residents and community, where Greenery will become part of daily life both visually and physically.
