In the first drawing, it is crucial to understand the basic information of Hamilton Township on a broader scale and establishing one’s thinking behind these relationships.

Moving to the precinct site, more information and issues will be captured. Carefully dealing with the details and observing the useful features for future considerations.

Elevation analysis captures the materiality and possible relationships within the site. Also, to better understand the level and scale of the site’s topography.

Historic Business Research

Gray Street - Victoria Hotel

Gray Street - Woolworths

Gray Street - Hollywood Cafe

Gray Street -A Miller & Co

Gray Street - Riley Motors

Brown Street - Strachan’s Store

Historic influence plays an essential role around our site. Through the historic business research, Gray Street and Brown Street have become the most important considerations for the site. Although some of the buildings were demolished, they contained the memory of the historic township. Adding this information to the map would present a much more exciting and distinctive township analysis. 7

NHG Precinct Site Plan Key Information: Street Conditions Greenery, Topography Building Roofs Historic Moment

Comparing to the Township Map, the Precinct site plan presents some extra information in a more detailed way. The roof shapes and various patterns both highlight the materiality of the buidlings within the site.

According to the previous historic analysis, three primary historic moments are highlighted around the site, presenting the past appearance. Overall, the past and present combine together to form a meaningful site plan for NHG.

9

The materiality and architectural style of the site’s surroundings remind me about its past moment. Is it a renovation or becoming a sense of loss? By collaging the past moment of the building with its current condition, I will say it is more about a loss of identity. Traditional material and the initial purpose of the building are no longer exists, it is time to recall these memories.

Major Traffic Routes

The Township Master Plan uses a similar base-map as the previous project, but instead of presenting the topography, the historical influence is highlighted in the map (greenish). After relinking the most influencial zones, the location of the key civic area is later definied.

16

Concept Developments

Instead of demolishing all the buildings in the site, part of the retaining walls is contained, later becoming the proposed buildings’ old feature & new structure. Applying grid lines could further explore the relationships between the retaining walls and new walls

Grid Lines

“Labyrinth,” thresholds and enclosures integrate together within the site. The arrangement of the new walls follows the shape of the defined civic area (later will be refined).

“Labyrinth”

Based on the previous arrangement, massing of the building and voids of the pathway now unfold. Defining the percentage of the solids and voids is one of the key questions for the future proposal.

Solids vs. Voids (Massing vs. Path)

Proposed 3D Version

By combining the previous sketches and precedent studies, the relationships between historic walls and new walls can be separated into two parts: portals and structures. Later, I did some studies three-dimensionally to discover the height and scenarios of the possible arrangements.

The voids and irregular shapes of the new walls offer some exciting moments for both the pedestrians and the inner site. Through the voids on the new walls, one could observe part of the historic moments or transfer through this moment.

Proposed Elevation

21

Circulations

Different types of circulations are also considered within the proposed plan. Pedestrians and cyclists can enter the site through the existing laneways and the lift-up entrances.

Apart from walking and cycling, vehicles are one of the primary transportations to the site. Introducing the idea of a roundabout into the site is also based on this consideration (inviting vehicles into the site).

Mid Semester Deliverables

26

03

By combining all the essential ideas and elevated drawings of the previous learnings, the mid-semester review helps to strengthen your new proposals and inspire future thinking.

Concept Statement New Hamilton Gallery

The boundary between History and the Future is never defined. “History to Present to Future” is like an endless journey full of opportunities. The new Hamilton Gallery now proposes as the “Portal”, which will connect the old township with the future development of our site. Existing walls and buildings are the primary components to build up the new gallery, which function as the structures and the gateways of new buildings. Now these historic moments are applied with new meanings, which will be introduced to locals and visitors in the future. According to different viewers’ perspectives, the experience of the new gallery will vary: The olds observe the memory. The youths inherit the tradition. The children participate in the future. Hierarchical experience of vistors will merge in the landscape and movements within different programs to enhance the idea of journey.

27

Program Analysis

According to the functional and programmatic requirements of the site, it is essential to identify suitable programs and sizes. The diagram above shows all the required functions in cubic forms to clarify the usage. All the programs are also separated into two categories, the flow of people and public vs. private sense.

28

Existing Wall Analysis

Most of the buildings within the site are 1-2 storey high with slightly pitched roof. The landscape of the site has a significant slope around 5 meters, which caused the condition of hierarchical leveling of buildings.

29

Existing Conditions (3d model)

By modeling the existing site conditions, it helps to understand the heights and in-between space of the surroundings. According to my initial concept, the existing wall height is one of my primary considerations. . Scanned with CamScanner

30

Different wall heights will influence visitors’ experiences. Creating a hierarchical feeling is essential to the movements within site. Moreover, hierarchical cross-vision could offer viewers an integrated visual feeling.

Heritage

Based on four types of features (materiality, form, art, and heritage), several existing walls and buildings are maintained for future developments. From the above axonometric diagram, the remaining walls are having different heights and materialities. Combining the new walls with these existing features is challenging, as some of the roof structures must be maintained as well to stabilize the walls.

The proposed master plan shows the primary programs and landscape in different color patches. Although the existing walls are highlighted in the map, there are no division walls within this program as the main focus of this map is to identify different zones and functions. The internal walls will be presented in the later schematic plan, as well as the structural components. 34

Conceptual Developments

Building vs. Landscape (key massing area 1&2)

Extending Massing to Art Centre (Block the circulation)

Based on the conditions as mentioned earlier, the landscape, and existing buildings, the development of massings could be separated into two areas. The location of the remaining walls is fixed within these areas, how to integrate new walls to these historic features should be the first step.

Connecting by Bridge (free circulation)

After roughly dividing the programs, the connection between the Performance Art Centre to the new proposals comes to mind. Will it become the extension of the new gallery or as the transit zone between spaces.

35

Sketch Developments

Although the area of each program has been identified, the internal walls within each program also require some considerations: remaining wall as the new internall wall or combing the new walls with the existing walls. Different arrangements will cause different movements and experience.

Open plan offers a free spatial movement; however, more division walls could enhance the idea of journey. (complex movement). In my opinion, the form of my building already offered various movements among each program, and open plan arrangement might be more suitable for the internal.

36

Section A-A

According to the proposed leveling plan, the new proposed landscape also has a five meters fall as the original site. Section A focuses on the massing (gallery & bridge) more, Section B perpendicular to it focuses more on landscape and civic space.

From both sections, it is obvious that both the surroundings and the new proposal are two-storey high, as I do not want to break the height condition of the existing walls. The bridge and the roundabout are the critical features within the site; visitors could notice them at the first moment.

Feedbacks - Mid

Graphic: Circular Historic moment is suitable in major project 01, however, it turns out to be too distractive in the following maps.

Accessibility: Vehicle circulations partly block the movements within site. Less convincing to the design proposal. How could the new proposed circulation invite people into the site and integrate into the historic moment at the same time? Is it necessary to introduce the driveway into the site?

Civic Square: The sunken civic square can not highlight the original landscape condition and is less harmonious with the buidlings.

Remaining Walls: The reason to determine the remaining walls, materiality? structure? Most of the remaining walls are also retaining walls or structural walls to support the roof structures.

41

The final outcome of the project will focus on the relationship between the original buidlings and the new proposed areas (both massing and landscape).

Brick Wall v.s. Metal Cladding Common combination of external walls (usually for residential and commerical buildings)

Brick Wall v.s. Concrete Both masonry systems, heavy weight Not suitable to build upon the old structures

Brick Wall v.s. Timber Common combination of residentials (need to consider the durability)

Brick Wall v.s. Glazing Common combination of retails & commercial (light weight and modern structures; solids vs. “voids”)

53

Facade Analysis (Materiality)

Through the study of the existing materiality on site, bricks play an essential role inside our site. Timber and metal are also quite common around the site. Concrete and cement are applied for flooring.

To extend the heritage moment of the site, Australian Red Bricks will be the major material for my proposal.

Facade Analysis (Precedent)

The Albert Schweitzer Community Centre, Mobile Architectural Office

The metal skin - brushed stainless steel and rusted metal offer a strong identity to the Community Centre.

David Brownlow Theatre, Jonathan Tuckey Design

The Theatre of David Brownlow looks like using metal cladding for the facade, but the real material is wood. Viroc wood with warm red hue provides a similiar rust feeling of the metals, but more sustainable.

Library and Culture Centre, Primeus Arkitekter

The black cladding with lighting inside is a type of modern technique adding to the facade. During night time, the lighting will offer a different feeling or apperance to viewers.

58

Sketch Model

Accordimg to the analysis from the surroudnings, most of the buidlings around the site have pitched roofs with metal claddings.

The Gallery will be my primary focus to design detail structures. After testing, the pitched roof is quite suitable form the gallery area, but need further adjustment.

James Stirling, Queen’s College, 1966

The up side down axnometric drawing designed by James Stirling provides some unique information about the structures and movements within the building. Unlike normal axnometric diagram, the up side down version is more efficent for internal explanation.

The overall layout uses two major colours: green and red, to achieve a harmonious graphic style. Linework drawings are the primary presenting style for my project, hence, clear and hierarchical line weights are very important to explain the concpets behind each drawing,

The boundary between History and the Future is never defined. “History to Present to Future” is like an endless journey full of opportunities. The new Hamilton Gallery now proposes as the “Portal”, which will connect the old township with the future development of our site.

500,000

Existing walls and buildings are the primary components to build up the new gallery, which function as the structures and the gateways of new buildings. Now these historic moments are applied with new meanings, which will be introduced to locals and visitors in the future. According to different viewers’ perspectives, the experience of the new gallery will vary: The olds observe the memory.

Renovation & Heritage

The youths inherit the tradition.

Water Body

The children participate in the future.

Greenery

Hierarchical experience of vistors will merge in the landscape and movements within different programs to

enhance the idea of journey.

The primary focus of the presentation is explaining the resaons of the heritage structures and buidlings maintained within my proposal. Thus, understanding the history of the township of Hamilton at first is very essential.
