Alaska 4-H prepares young people to step up to the challenges in their community and the world. Using research-based programming focused on positive youth development, 4-H youths get the hands-on, real-world experience they need to be successful.

4-H GROWS: 4-H grows confident, capable and caring kids with the life skills to thrive in today’s world and succeed in their boldest dreams for tomorrow. 4-H grows youth who are ready and willing to serve their communities, influence their peers and nurture their environment, youth who put the needs of their club, their community, their country and their world before their own. A 4-H CLUB EXPERIENCE MAKES A POWERFUL IMPACT! 4-H clubs and activities provide a safe space for youth and adults to have fun while learning together. National studies reveal that youth in 4-H are:

MORE LIKELY TO MAKE HEALTHIER CHOICES

MORE LIKELY TO CONTRIBUTE TO THEIR COMMUNITIES

4-H brochure 2016 for fairbanks 1-15-16.indd 2

MORE LIKELY TO PARTICIPATE IN SCIENCE PROGRAMS OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL TIME

HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED? Project clubs concentrate on one project at a time, such as gardening, woodworking, karate, photography, shooting sports, skiing, foods and more. It just takes a caring adult who is willing to share time and talents with interested youth and meet for at least one hour, six times a year. Community clubs offer a variety of projects as well as opportunities for youth and adults to share what’s being learned and work on community service and other activities that bring together members of all the different projects to work on common goals. • 4-H afterschool clubs offer a 4-H club experience in afterschool programs. • 4-H offers enrichment activities that are hands-on, fun and engaging and teach life skills. • Military 4-H programs support military youth on and off installations

The mission of Alaska 4-H is to empower youth to reach their full potential by working and learning in partnerships with caring adults. We believe every child should have the skills to thrive in life, community and career.

• SPIN – (SPecial INterest Clubs) offer do-ityourself, at-your-own pace projects to learn on your own or in small groups — perfect for areas where 4-H clubs may not yet be offered. • School Enrichment Opportunities offer handson learning as part of special or regular classroom projects within the school. These may be short-term or long-term projects. • 4-H camps offer day or residential camps full of fun learning and recreation opportunities.

Possible Careers with an NRM degree

SNRE

With a 360-million-acre classroom at your disposal there’s no better place to study the environment than at UAF. Where else can you hike through a boreal forest or get up close and personal with a herd of reindeer — and earn college credit for it?

The NRM degree prepares students for careers with state and federal agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Students with a degree in natural resources management will be qualified for employment in a broad range of agencies and private businesses in various natural resources fields and will be well equipped for graduate school. Possible careers include: For more information contact:

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE Natural Resources Management

Whether your interests are in agriculture, resource economics, environmental quality, reindeer husbandry or management of our water or forest resources, all of the programs we offer involve direct participation in field and laboratory activities.

Minor in Natural Resources Management Students who major in wildlife biology, earth sciences, geography, geology, environmental studies, environmental politics, range management and other programs often find that a minor in natural resources management complements and enhances their course of study.

Pre-veterinary Medicine Track

SNRE offers a pre-veterinary medicine program that prepares students for professional veterinary medical training. The pre-veterinary track at SNRE leads to a B.S. in natural resources management.

Undergraduate research at SNRE

SNRE research focuses on community business development, controlled-environment and highlatitude agriculture, multiple resources management, policy and law, and outdoor recreation. SNRE trifold brochure condensed version.indd 2

Research facilities: Among the school’s research facilities are greenhouses, the Agricultural and

Forestry Experiment Station farms, the Delta Junction Field Research Site, the Nome Field Research Site, the Bonanza Creek Long-Term Ecological Research forests, the Georgeson Botanical Garden, the Reindeer Research Program and the Controlled Environment Agriculture Laboratory. These facilities allow ample opportunity for hands-on experience while you earn your degree.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES AT UAF

Study within the School of Natural Resources and Extension is an exploration of the Earth, its distinct and varied regions and the challenges of the modern-day world — but it isn’t merely book and classroom study. Opportunities for hands-on work abound at SNRE: field trips, fieldwork, internships, work study, summer jobs and research projects contribute to a stimulating and challenging experience.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

Scientists, natural resources managers and policy makers are becoming more aware of the complexity and interrelatedness of society and the environment. Implementing sustainable natural resources decisions in contemporary society requires an interdisciplinary approach. SNRE offers students hands-on education in natural resources management that can lead to career opportunities in many areas and in many regions around the globe.

SOME OF THE CLASSES AVAILABLE TO UNDERGRADUATES • Natural Resources Conservation and Policy • Plant Propagation • Wild and Cultivated Berries of Alaska • Wilderness Leadership Education • Principles of Sustainable Agriculture • Introduction to Applied Plant Science • Natural Resources Measurement and Inventory • Internship in Natural Resources Management and Geograph

• Introduction to Geographic Information Systems • Introduction to Watershed Mangement • Natural Resources Ecology • Soils and the Environment • Environmental Decision Making • Harvesting and Utilization of Forest Products • Soil Management for Quality and Conservation • Senior Thesis in Natural Resources Management

Internships: While you’re working on your degree, opportunities for natural resources

management-related part-time and summer employment can help you build experience and working relationships that lead directly to full-time employment after graduation. Internships are available with many state and federal government agencies in Alaska and with local private businesses and nonprofits. Such internships can also be set up to earn academic credit.

Undergraduate research at AFES

The Alaska Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station includes the Fairbanks Experiment Farm, the Matanuska Experiment Farm, the Forest Soils Laboratory and the Delta Junction field research site. The Georgeson Botanical Garden and the Reindeer Research Program herd are at the Fairbanks farm. 1/5/16 9:46 AM
