UBER seeks out the best in design - Chalet-N
CHALET N
Welcome to the sumptuous Chalet N., Oberlech, Austria. Those days and weeks that you block out of your diary each year for skiing are precious. Sacred, even.
Chalet N. Alpine luxury meets its summit.
And it goes much further than just the exhilaration of skiing: the Alpine experience another world away yet just a couple of hours’ flight time - is a just reward for the punishing schedule you maintain at home. So this is no time to cross fingers or cut corners. The task is simple. Gather eight other, very special, like-minded, couples and set the bar high: indulge yourselves for once in what is simply the largest, most majestic ski lodge anywhere in the Alps. CHALET N
The joy about having space is, ironically, the options it gives the designers to create spaces of true intimacy and privacy. Chalet N is gloriously and unashamedly large. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Arlberg massif, it swallows up to 22 people in sumptuous luxury, with a privacy you only experience in your own apartment. Each of the main eight bedrooms is a suite wide, bright and spacious - together with its own opulent bathroom, private balcony and walk-in wardrobe. Tucked away inside this enclave of beyondluxury luxury, you also have a fabulously welcoming living and dining areas, and of course a crackling log fire and an amply stocked bar. When the mood takes you, there’s the private cinema, a billiard room and a worryingly wellstocked wine cellar. And that’s before you take your place in Chalet N’s own private spa. It comes complete with a cosmetic area, a double treatment room with double or single massage beds, a private hair stylist, a relaxation area, steam showers, ice fountain, hay sauna, Finnish sauna or salt gallery steam bath and two cold basins, as well as an inviting swimming pool and a Jacuzzi. There is also a private gym so, in short, you will find they have thought of pretty much everything - but if not, the full staff is there to take care of it. At your service is the Chalet Manager, reception concierge, your private chef, butler, housekeeper, massage therapist, ski instructor, and beautician and hair stylist. As a ski-in/ski-out property you are moments from the slopes, and the bars, restaurants, clubs and night life of Oberlech and Lech are but minutes away in your chauffeured car. You won’t be surprised to hear that an early reservation is advised. To find out more, visit: www.luxurychaletcollection.com or call us on +44 1993 899 429

Ablaze WITH SUCCESS CHILTERN FIREHOUSE HAS SET THE LONDON RESTAURANT SCENE, WELL, ALIGHT.
CHILTERN FIREHOUSE
No doubt someone, somewhere, is writing a thesis on how to create and successfully sustain a landmark restaurant on the ferocious London scene. Required reading will be an analysis of Chiltern Firehouse. In one of the most successful launches seen in decades, it is an eaterie that foodie Tom Parker Bowles described in the Daily Mail as being “hotter than the surface of the sun.” Food, ambience, décor, celebs and that intangible aura of success - this place has it all in spades.
15
Chiltern Firehouse gets its name from the magnificent converted building it occupies. This Victorian-Gothic edifice was one of London’s first purpose-built fire stations, and today stands as an imposing Grade II landmark in the heart of the Marylebone area.
Its conversion and transformation into a heavyhitting restaurant will not have lacked a suitable budget. Its owner is hotel magnate André Balazs, he of the glamorous Château Marmont in Hollywood and the Mercer hotel in New York. The restaurant interior is designed by Parisbased Studio KO, and the ambience, for such a roaring success, can actually be quite hushed and intimate. The dining room is done in restful creams and whites while, on an upper level, there’s more of a buzz around the bar. (Tip: there’s a rather nice snug up there for two people, complete with its own hearth.)
CHILTERN FIREHOUSE
If you can, nab a seat at the kitchen counter, where you can watch the chefs at work in their huge and lavish open kitchen. It’s then that you realise that highly fashionable can also produce enormously edible. Under the command of chef Nuno Mendes, the kitchen sends forth a range of well executed, international dishes. Appetisers such as tiny doughnuts filled with crab meat are gorgeous. Or a starter of pigeon, pink-fleshed yet sizzlingly crisp, with chicory and herby risotto.
Mains include monkish, cooked over charcoal and perfumed with fresh pine. Or try the octopus with aubergine purée, or the slow-roasted beef ribs with an intensely flavoured jus reduction. The invention continues into the desserts, such as pannacotta, with ice cream lurking beneath grilled meringue and frozen green granita. In these and other specialities lies the secret of Chiltern Firehouse’s success. It is an all too rare case of glamour and gastronomy actually coming together under the same roof. www.chilternfirehouse.com

DECOREX INTERNATIONAL
UBER SEEKS OUT THE BEST Take a look at all these Decorex product collections at
uber-interiors.com/autumnlondon
A uniquely British experience, internationally renowned for being the paramount UK event to discover the very best in luxury design.
Borrowed from AW14 fashion and an overall key trend of foliage, Harlequin London were teaching us how to be on Neo-Futurism along with a colour blocking trend with their impeccably well dressed dining display.
> CTO Lighting’s stand shows that the trend for brass continues to be the metal of favour, be it wall art or lights, antique muted or polished.
The autumn months are alive with inspiration for interiors professionals. If the upper echelons of the design world are considered the taste makers, then the one UK based event not to be missed is Decorex International in London. It is the nucleus for the percolation of interiors trends with all the crucial elite suppliers from hand painted wallpaper to laser cut marble, ten foot murano glass chandeliers to reclaimed tiles, all showing their latest wares to the eager design royalty trying to politely restrain their excitement.
Similar to fine art, the jaw dropping Mammoth console from Villiers is one of those pieces that needs to be seen first hand to soak in all those hours of British craftsmanship which mere photographs cannot depict. Luckily for us its new ‘post Decorex’ home can be appreciated by all at our showroom. Paired with the hand grooved Omega mirror it makes the most breathtaking of statement pieces.

Last year’s stand winners Harlequin London were in part given the honour of helping dress the Georgian themed entrance based on a series of Hogarth paintings. Their take on ‘The Gaming House’ is centred around an exquisite Villiers glass coffee table - which we are proud to say is taking pride of place in the centre of UBER Interiors’ showroom.

UBER seeks out the best in design - Ferrari F80
DEAR FERRARI I’VE HAD AN IDEA
UBER celebrates an astonishing concept for the Ferrari of the future, from the automotive designer Adriano Raeli.
It seems strange to remind ourselves, but ‘Ferrari’ is of course simply the surname of an Italian family. Hard to imagine perhaps, but had they been English, we could now be drooling over a 1,000 bhp performance monster that went by the name of ‘Smith’. Today, Ferrari is a word that has become a descriptor for all that is achingly desirable in automotive design. Grace, beauty, sensuality, rampant power, form and exquisite function add your own synonyms of what Ferrari says to you as the marque continues to amaze in the shape of the recent Ferrari LaFerrari (the F70). All of which makes you wonder where Ferrari can possibly go in the years ahead?
Well, according to one designer, the answer is a lot further. The concept created by designer Adriano Raeli is a vision of a Ferrari perhaps 1015 years from now. It embraces the red-blooded Ferrari ethos and, visually at least, magnifies it by a factor of 10. Raeli told UBER: “The F80 Concept aims to bring the most authentic F1 experience and performance to the road without compromising the brand’s class and elegance of form. The vehicle is designed with Formula 1 architecture in mind with a blend of Ferrari’s Le Mans heritage.” The result is something that you can almost imagine leaving the ground; indeed, Raeli was inspired by the Boeing NGAD concept fighter jet. Continued...
21
FERRARI F80 CONCEPT
The concept created by designer Adriano Raeli is a vision of a Ferrari perhaps 10-15 years from now.
As ever, aerodynamics are fundamental and here he has created an awe-inspiring solution: the overall frontal area is decreased by the air channels that have been carved between the main body and the wheel arches. The result is the ultimate supercar fantasy: a piece of automotive sculpture designed to house a unit delivering 1,200 hp. That would develop sufficient power to propel you to 67 mph in a blistering 2.2 seconds, on your way to a top speed of 310 mph. The only unsurprising thing about this design is that it has dazzled the industry and rapidly gone viral. At Topgear.com they commented: “The ultimate Ferrari F80 hypercar. It’s not real. It needs to be.”

Morocco meets art deco
HOW RIGO SPA CREATED AN OASIS OF CALM IN DOLPHIN SQUARE, THE 1930S APARTMENT COMPLEX IN LONDON. Dolphin Square, with its enviable position on the bank of the River Thames, is something of an enigma. You half expect to see Michael Caine pulling up outside in an E-Type Jaguar: this fashionable enclave of over 1000 apartments has been home to countless actors and entertainers, politicians and spies. Created in the 1930s, Dolphin Square has seen a renaissance and complete modernisation in recent years. After all, this is prime real estate in the heart of Central London. In addition to its famous art deco swimming pool, Dolphin Square has a club lounge and complete sports and fitness centre. As part of its overall upgrade, Rigo Spa was approached with a demanding brief: to create an authentic Moroccan relaxation and treatment spa that would become a hidden gem in the capital.
A CREATIVE AND TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT As with every project, Rigo Spa worked in close collaboration with the client, architects and designers.
so two or more clients can enjoy this treatment together. Subdued lighting, arched doorways and feature niche details all combine to enhance the memorable, theatrical experience.
The centrepiece of the project is the signature treatment of Moroccan hammam massage, around which there is a full repertoire of options and facilities.
Throughout, great care has been taken to respect and reflect Morocco’s time-honoured colourways, exotic textures and detailing; this even included a special plaster known as ‘tadelakt’ to create the bold and seamless surfaces.
The spa offers a splendid range of thermal rooms including a salt steam suite, a traditional hammam, a rhassoul mud chamber and several secluded showering features. Each is accessed through a relaxation room with luxurious, contoured heated loungers. Yet this is much more than just a series of excellent facilities; the design works as a cohesive, fluid whole to create an atmosphere of total equanimity and relaxation. Before using the thermal suite, a cluster of treatment rooms offer both wet and dry massage in an atmosphere of indulgent calm. Bathers can then relax on a heated bench inside a delicately steamy cabin whilst enjoying an invigorating massage. The hammam is designed
AN AWARD-WINNING HAVEN There is no doubt that Rigo Spa fulfilled its brief to create a ‘gem’, although it was never going to remain ‘hidden’ for very long. In both 2013 and 2014, this little piece of Morocco in Dolphin Square won Best Luxury Day Spa Award for all of the UK. This is a tribute to design, creativity and meticulous attention to detail combining to create a magic experience. For more about Rigo Spa visit: www.rigospa.com

QATAR AND SENEGAL Rigo Spa’s talents generate significant repeat business. Parisian client Buddha Bar returned for exciting new thermal projects in Doha and Dakar.
RIGO SPA: RELAXATION TO THE WORLD RIGO SPA IS CREATING THE ULTIMATE IN WELLNESS TREATMENT AND RELAXATION ENVIRONMENTS FOR PRIVATE CLIENTS, SPAS AND HOTELS WORLDWIDE. ABU DHABI The Rosewood Hotel Spa commissioned Rigo Spa to create 15 steam rooms, two hammams, two saunas and two automated ice mist showers, complete with Crestron automation.
UBER-MAG.COM // 0845 0773280
DOHA Inspired design and uncompromised technical standards are essential for any commercial spa. The Grand Regency Hotel commissioned Rigo Spa to create a bespoke thermal suite within the hotel that would run as a standalone business. The thermal suite design incorporated two saunas, two steam suites, two caldariums, two twin-sweater automated foot reflexology spas, and four automated experience shower pods.
RAS AL KHAIMAH The Doubletree Hilton Hotel ordered male and female thermal suites complete with steam, sauna and vitality spas.

Every company is born somewhere. But few can claim that the Savoy Hotel in London was the cradle of their illustrious history to come. Savoir Beds is the exception: the firm was created in 1905 to supply an exquisite range of beds to the Savoy, a hotel very much at the vanguard of standards and style in the-then fresh and exciting 20th century. Remarkably, Savoir’s beds from that time can still be found in the Savoy, such is the enduring legacy of true craftsmanship. Down the years, they have supported and cosseted the eminent frames of royalty and aristocracy, the great and the good and indeed a roll-call of Hollywood’s
finest: from James Stewart and Alfred Hitchcock to Katherine Hepburn and the Marx Brothers. So with 2014 marking the hotel’s 125th anniversary, it was only fitting that a new chapter of history should be written by the Savoy and Savoir, with the commission of a very special bed to mark the occasion. Savoir Bed’s Head of Design, Mandeep Dillon, set to work with the formidable task of creating a bed that truly captures the spirit of The Savoy. Dillon drew her inspiration from 1920s and 30s; decades when you might have caught Cary Grant at the Savoy nursing a cocktail; or Astaire on the dance floor; or a bumbling Stan Laurel
and Oliver Hardy, falling over themselves on the way into dinner. These were days of post-war (and indeed pre-war) optimism and fun, and the anniversary bed whisks you away to that time. Unfussy and visually simple, its crisp 20s lines are complemented by a futuristic ‘Flash Gordon’ feel with sharp angles and metallic bronze silk. The shape of the bed is emphasised by the deliberate use of a single fabric to upholster the whole bed, including the legs. The £11,841 anniversary bed, seen here in The Savoy’s famous Beaufort Bar, is also ‘on tour’ as Savoir recreates a Savoy hotel room at its showrooms around the world.

Metal X Glass creates surreal, living walls. This is a world of the fantastical and the mystical. Where walls take on a life of their own, with glimmers, shimmers, flecks and sparkles. Without letting too much daylight in on the magic, the secret lies in the inspirational blend of shape and light, materials and technique.
This is a world of ultra-fine glass beads and oxidised foils. Of hidden textures and baroque patterns. Of metallic richness, with flecks of gold, silver, copper and bronze capturing your gaze before vanishing beguilingly back into the dark. Worktops. Nature’s beauty or man’s ingenuity? MANCHESTER MARBLE
Our friends Betta Surfaces reveal the beauty of marble, granite, quartz and ceramics for dream kitchens. It’s a happy, and rare, coincidence when something that looks beautiful also happens to be one of the most practical options as well. Certainly, the day when someone first cast their eye on a chunk of rock and thought “that would look great in my kitchen” was an important day for us all. The fact is, marble, granite, quartz and ceramics provide some of the best surfaces you can fit in a kitchen - a room that is full of hazards ranging from food bacteria to scalding pans and a whole palette of vivid potential stains. These surfaces deal with them all.

Marble and Granite: millions of years in the making Created over hundreds of millions of years, marble and granite could have been made for the kitchen. They are literally, rock hard and can stand up to life in the toughest commercial kitchens, let alone at home. You won’t burn them either, but for most people these practical considerations take a back seat to something rather more compelling: marble and granite look and feel simply beautiful. Every single piece also has its own unique signature, and lends an air of luxury to one of the most important rooms in your home. Quartz: versatility and beauty For the designer in you, quartz worktops open up all kinds of options and visual textures. Quartz worktops are made up of 96% natural quartz and are set in a wide variety of coloured resins to enhance your kitchen design. As well as being hard wearing they are non-porous, making them some of the most hygienic worktops of all. Available in thicknesses of 12mm, 20mm and 30mm, the possibilities are endless. Ceramics: the next big thing If you own a ceramic floor, you won’t be surprised to hear that ceramics are fast becoming the new trend in the kitchen environment. AHEAD OF CURRENT
THINKING
If you’re ever lucky enough to step aboard this yacht, an award-winning realm of automation awaits.
UBER-MAG.COM // 0845 0773280
There’s an air of delicious fantasy about yachts. The ability to set sail (or, much less strenuously, start the engines) and spend aimless days island hopping and discovering deserted coves is seductive indeed. This air of ‘no limits’ is something owners bring to designing and equipping the yachts themselves. Whether it’s sourcing a concert grand piano for the saloon, or a particular type of carrara marble for the state room’s bathrooms, superyacht owners are most discerning and believe in the art of the possible. It’s in this world that Sensory International is without rival when it comes to taking dreams and designing them into reality. Their latest project - a complete automation project for this yacht - has required everything they undertake on dry land, but with the considerable added demands posed by a yacht. Everything must be compact, not occupying a millimetre more than it needs to. It must deliver fantasy-like capabilities while also being mindful of factors such as weather and motion. It must also be fully reliable; after all, there are no service engineers for your cinema in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

NEED ANYTHING? JUST IPAD YOUR STEWARD. This yacht was Sensory’s second commission by this particular owner, and a hallmark of their work that you’re never very far from an iPad. This is not so much because you might want to use a tablet, but more because they control almost every facet of the automation. That’s why there are more than 27 iPads used on board, with some of the world’s most advanced automation technology distilled down into simple, intuitive commands that anyone can use.
They give you control of Sensory’s fully integrated lighting system and the sophisticated CCTV system, which is complete with analytic cameras. Sensory designed a complete ‘central nervous system’ of IT and data networks to serve every need imaginable. Which includes lots of fun stuff. The owner particularly wanted a global audio system so that the grand piano in the lounge could be relayed throughout the yacht. Also distributed throughout is an audiovisual system, in full HD naturally. Perhaps the show-stopper on this craft is the impressively specified games room. It features dual large screens with independent video and audio source selection, so there are two different entertainment sources on offer.

And then there’s the external permanent cinema, featuring a leading-edge projection system that functions as perfectly in the brilliance of a Caribbean day as it does under the stars at night. The projector housing features a special waterproof and air conditioned design especially for the purpose. When you require some popcorn for the movie, an iPad is all it needs to summon the waiting staff. This also gives you one-touch wireless access to everything from the distributed AV system and Lutron lighting, to the blinds and climate control.
AWARD-WINNING THINKING The automation industry’s Oscars (the ‘CEDIAs’) recently honoured Sensory. Their work on the yacht won the 2014 Best Marine Installation award. The company also won the award in 2010 and 2011. Regardless of the location or situation, good design is always about excellent function and inspired aesthetics. Aboard this yacht, they have come together beautifully.

WHERE LUXURY COMES AS STANDARD UBER MEETS CRAIG AINSCOUGH, WHO PRESIDES OVER ONE OF THE FASTESTGROWING LUXURY DEVELOPERS IN THE REGION: EVENTUS. Craig, property developers come from many walks of life. But I doubt there are many who started out as craftsmen… “That’s probably very true. I started my working life as an apprentice joiner, which is all about taking care and pride in what you do. It’s a blend of aesthetics and technical - left brain and right brain skills. I enjoyed being part of a team contributing to a beautiful end result. But as you say, you also need that left brain organisational ability as well “Working with wood, there’s a saying that you ‘measure twice and cut once’. In other words, plan everything meticulously, before you then go ahead and do it. I think that’s a useful philosophy to take into business. But how did the joiner become an entrepreneur? “Well, that’s probably in my DNA. My family have been very successful in various businesses so I grew up seeing first-hand what hard work and talent can achieve. I’m also ambitious, and being surrounded by great brains gave me the perfect springboard to make the leap on my own.” So tell me about Eventus “Eventus focuses on designing and developing residential property. And being based in Cheshire, one of the most affluent areas in the country, we concentrate on exceptional endresults. In fact, that’s where the name of our company came from. ‘Bonus Eventus’ means ‘successful outcome’.
EVENTUS PROPERTIES
So what kind of successful outcomes have you been delivering? “They vary in every sense - size, scale, character, budget. One of my favourites is a project called Brookhouse, where we’ve taken a beautiful old 17th century pub and are turning it into a fabulous 4 bedroom residence. This project needs maximum sensitivity regarding its wonderful heritage, which we’re combining with state of the art technology and design. It will have features such as a wine cellar accessed through a secret trap door. And there’s a vaulted gun store. And a gym and a digital cinema - so a real blend of quirks and very careful design, spread over 6000 square feet or so. It’s a fascinating project. And on an even grander scale, you’ve created a major new project in Wilmslow’s most prestigious road “That’s right, it’s called Adderley and has been conceived from the ground up as a statement property for an owner who is used to the best of everything. This is a major 7000 square feet country residence and will be perfect for someone with a sprawling family and who loves entertaining. We’ve created the physical part, and all it needs now is lots of laughter and noise. What’s inside? “Just about everything really! There are five beautiful bedrooms, complete not just with luxurious ensuite bathrooms but also dressing rooms. In fact the Master Suite goes one further with his and her dressing rooms and en-suites.
The house also has an indoor pool, a steam room, a gym, waterfall showers, a hot tub, a study, and a living room/cinema room. There is also a laundry on the first floor, a two-car garage and an eight-camera security system. And the all-important kitchen? “…is just perfect, created for the space with the very best of SieMatic and of course the latest generation of appliances. It’s a room you want to linger in and serves as a luxurious family hub. How would you describe your approach to development generally? “A central design philosophy is crucial. In Adderley, for example, every room in the house has its own design concept. Nothing is repeated. We also create residences to live in, not just to look at. And we surround ourselves with the best builders, interior designers and architects, carefully chosen for the particular style of project. We have an obsession with quality, whether that’s technical or aesthetic, and above all we love what we do. And I think that shows.” For more information on Eventus Properties visit www.eventusproperties.co.uk

ARE YOU USING THE LATEST SECURITY APP? Nowadays everything has a smart phone / tablet app, whether it’s your music, TV or even your kettle so it’s not surprising to find that manufactures in the security industry are following suit and bringing out app’s for their devices. “Which is good news for leading Security installers like us” as we get asked more frequently to push the boundaries in this sector by the demands of our clients, who look for this new technology to simplify their lifestyles. CCTV app’s have been around for a while now and have been very popular but other security systems, such as Intruder and Access systems
UBER-MAG.COM // 0845 0773280
were being left behind as technology advanced. That was until last year when some of the leading manufacturers of alarm and intercom systems started to bring out their own applications. Texecom, a market leader in intruder systems and a favourite of Sensory Secure, released their application last year and it’ been a massive hit. The app allows a user to not only arm and disarm the system but it’s also possible to control gates and garage doors from your phone meaning the end of having multiple fobs cluttering up your keys.
BPT also brought out their app for the XIP range of door entry and intercom systems which enables you to see and talk to whoever is at the door from your mobile device. This can be your iPad whilst in the garden or your mobile phone sat on the sofa watching a film. All together you can now have complete control of your security system from your mobile phone. www.sensorysecure.com tel: +44 (0)1625 505720

HEA LT H & BE AU T Y
FACE. THE FUTURE. The aesthetics consultant Dr. Roy Saleh bases his treatment on new generation products - and a little help from your own body. It’s perhaps ironic that a word we may not want to hear when we’re young (such as “plump”) is one we come to wish for as we get older - for our faces, at least. From our 30s onwards, we start to lose that natural characteristic of filling out our face. Our skin becomes thinner and less tight, the dermal tissue beneath starts to thin and our faces shrink a little as well. However, there is way to recapture that fullness, and the answer doesn’t have to lie in surgery; a dermal filler may be a more straightforward and less involved alternative.
UNDER THE SKIN OF DERMAL FILLERS A dermal filler is simply a substance which is injected, resulting in increased elasticity and bouncier skin. Dermal fillers first came to prominence in the 1980s and revolutionised cosmetic treatment at that time. The ingredient then was collagen, the main structural protein of the various connective tissues found in animals. But, as is the way with science, improvement is always the aim and in the 1990s came a major breakthrough: Hyaluronic acid treatments which have since been hailed as an important advance in anti-ageing products and procedures. Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced by the body and Dr. Saleh first started working with hyaluronic dermal fillers as long ago as 1997. He has refined and honed the technique ever since and in particular recommends two state of art fillers: Restylane and Juvéderm. Restylane fillers are designed to help smooth away wrinkles and lines, by adding volume under your skin where it is needed most. They can also be used to restore volume to sunken cheeks. Juvéderm is made by Allergan, the company who brought the world the anti-wrinkle injection. Juvéderm is a hyaluronic acid facial filler which is smooth and long lasting. During the treatment Dr. Saleh injects the gel under your skin, using a fine needle. The gel then fills facial lines and wrinkles or adds subtle volume.

A natural-looking, younger you Before
After
FACIAL FAT TRANSFER Of course, nothing could be more natural than a ‘product’ that your own body already produces. Your own fat can be used as the perfect filler. In fact, no external product can ever quite rival the remarkable effect of transferring fat from one part of your body to another. It contains stem cells and hormones which, because they are your very own, the body accepts perfectly naturally. This is a well tried and tested concept. Indeed, Dr. Saleh first used this technique in 1991, well over 20 years ago. There are no restrictions, either: fat transfer is equally accepted in any area of the face. As for the fat removal procedure itself, it involves taking ‘finer’ fat from the abdomen in a measured, delicate and comfortable process. In a separate procedure, the fat is then injected into the face. The result is the ‘Rolls Royce’ of facial treatments and is the nearest you can get to a facelift without actually having surgery. It brings new life to the upper eyes, cheek lines, cheek hollows, around the mouth and along the jaw lines. Crucially, the overall effect is natural as new fat integrates with the original already there. No single area stands out; it works as a complete and even improvement. Sadly, nothing is forever and the treatment does require a repeat. However, once a year is usually sufficient for your face to maintain a natural, youthful plumpness.

JOIN THE JUICE CRAZE THE DETOX 3 DAY BLITZ
06 //
HEALTH & BEAUTY
WE CAN ALL DO WITH A DETOX ONCE IN A WHILE. AND WITH THE CHRISTMAS ASSAULT ON THE HORIZON, NOW’S THE TIME TO DISCOVER THE DELICIOUS OPTION OF GREEN & GINGER COLD-PRESSED JUICE. In a world where dietary ideas come and go, one is consistently trending amongst people who want to eat well and deliciously: cold-pressed juice. Its health benefits aren’t difficult to understand. Take some fabulous, ultra-fresh ingredients, do as little to them as possible as you liquefy them, and the result is a creation that’s a power of good, filled with natural fruit sugars, vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Add some artful blending of Nature’s panoply of flavours and textures - sweet, succulent, savoury, tart, spicy, thick - and you have an array of fragrant juices that you positively want to drink. That’s why experts are predicting that, perhaps for the first time, our traditional daily hit of caffeine now has some serious competition.
COLD-PRESSED IS BEST Juices are a natural way to get your 7 a day. And when you think of the sheer variety that nature offers, the options seem infinite. From celery, cucumber, mint, spring greens and kale; to apples, kiwi fruit, lemons and limes; to red cabbage, beetroot, carrots, lettuce and sugar snap peas; from coolers and thirst-quenchers to warmers and comforters. But while there’s no danger of getting bored, the trick is also to retain as much goodness as possible. This is why cold-pressing is so worthwhile. The truth is, an ordinary household blender shreds your ingredients, in a process that adds heat and also exposes the ingredients to the air.
Cold-press machines work differently. They press and grind your ingredients to extract all the goodness, without adding heat (hence ‘cold’ pressing). The difference is significant, extracting up to 30% more goodness and value from the same ingredients.
THE 3 DAY BLITZ A great detox introduction is the 3-Day Blitz: a full three days on simply Green & Ginger’s array of different juices. This gives your system a break from fatty and processed foods and alcohol, and replenishes your body with vitamins and minerals. Typically, you’ll lose a good few pounds into the bargain. Green & Ginger’s unique 3 day course helps to cleanse your body of impurities, giving you back your natural, healthy glow. For more, visit their website at www.greenandgingerjuice.com

The BMW X4. Head and heart, both happy.
Whether you choose a car with reason or emotion, the BMW X4 could be the answer.
If you do a fair amount of mileage, it is also a car that makes light work of long journeys, with effortless power combining with a quiet engine and minimal road and wind noise.
12 //
AUTOMOTIVE
While some cars seem to slot themselves into neat categories, others refuse to be defined quite so simplistically. The highly individual new BMW X4 is a case in point. You can’t lazily group it in with hatchbacks, even though it is one, as it’s bigger and has altogether more presence on the road than, say, a Golf. If you describe it as a 4 x 4, which it also is, it conjures images of the meaty constructions you see on the school run. Yet the X4 is altogether neater, sleeker and more stylish. So let’s perhaps agree that BMW’s new creation has some of the practical, sensible space of a sports utility vehicle, coupled with the stylish lines - and searing performance - of a powerful Coupé. It’s an intriguing combination, and will delight people who want a car that copes with their shopping, sporting clobber or whatever their lives demand but who also enjoy an exciting ride getting there. The X4 gives you both, in style and comfort.
UNDER THE BONNET No two ways about it, the BMW X4 is a powerful car. The X4 30d will whisk you from 0-62mph in a fleeting 5.8 seconds. But reassuringly, the car has no problem keeping this power under control. It handles sure-footedly, gripping you to the road and offering taught, responsive steering. If you do a fair amount of mileage, it is also a car that makes light work of long journeys, with effortless power combining with a quiet engine and minimal road and wind noise. Yet, paradoxically, a car of this thrust can still deliver excellent fuel economy. Give it a gallon of diesel (all X4s in the range are diesel in the UK) and it can take you some 47.9 miles. The 20d model is even more frugal, returning 54mpg in official European tests. Continued...
// 13
INSIDE THE CABIN There is an air of class and quality about the BMW brand and the X4 is a fine exemplar of the marque. The dashboard is ordered and understated, with the key functions operated via menus on a screen. You access them via a dial that’s within easy reach of both driver and passenger, right by the gearstick.
14 //
Visually, the cabin is a joy, and you have ample scope to specify colours and materials to bring together wood, metal inserts and sumptuous leather to beautiful effect. All of which means the head and the heart can tick a number of boxes.
The X4 is undoubtedly practical and useful. It’s also economical and frugal. And you can fairly claim it is reasonably responsible when you weigh up its relatively modest Co2 emissions.
JUST BACK: REPORTS FROM THE EDEN TRAVEL TEAM A luxurious sojourn in the Caribbean and, over the page, two very special ideas from the year-round destination of Tenerife.
Rosewood Jumby Bay, Antigua. Whisper it, but there are times we’ve suspected that the Caribbean tends to rely on its idyllic surroundings to make up for less-than-five-star hotels and service. Compared, for example, to the finer hotels in the Indian Ocean, it has rather lagged behind. Until, that is, you immerse yourself in hotels such as the Rosewood Jumby Bay in Antigua. More accurately (and romantically) it’s two miles north of Antigua on its own 300-acre private island, and is accessible only by boat. The only other island occupants, apart from the guests, are some goats and the wildlife such as birds, lizards, and turtles. Island ‘travel’ is on push bikes. But the charmingly simplicity of the island nevertheless belies a luxurious experience in the hotel itself.
HOTEL ACCOMMODATION
They have judged the suites perfectly here, and in particular we like the two Rosewood Estate Suites. For more privacy, see if you can secure Suite 44 is
the one to request, with its sense of spaciousness and high ceilings, British colonial styling and a vast bathroom with two large rainfall showers. With its own butler pantry service, it is also prefect for intimate dining à deux. The hotel also features best-of-both-worlds options that give you the space and privacy of your own villa, but with excellent eating, drinking and top class service on your doorstep in the hotel. We liked the 4-bedroomed Sea Breeze villa, with two of the rooms opening out onto verandas. Just sip your morning coffee against the backdrop of Buckley Bay and Bird Island. Alternatively, round up a gang of your favourite friends and choose one of the island’s estate homes. Just one example is Lazy Lizard, with its six bedrooms each housed in individual pavilions. It sits on its own private beach and also has a vast free-form pool and even a floating dining pavilion. Once installed here you may not be inclined to budge; in which case, send for the residence’s personal chef who will take care of your every gastronomic whim.

YOU COULD GET USED TO THIS
In such surroundings, a spa makes your relaxation complete and many a guest discovers new heights of bliss with their ‘Jumby On the Rocks’ - not a drink, but a hot stone massage. Your deal with the hotel will probably also include a sunset cruise with canapés and champagne, and their Pasture Bay picnic, set up just for you on a private beach. A good tip is to book these when you arrive and the slots get taken quickly. It may not be easy, but stirring yourself to explore Antigua is a must. From its rich maritime traditions with super yachts and a flotilla of other craft, to the heritage of Nelson’s Dockyard, and the ultra laid back Sunday lunch barbecues up at Shirley heights, overlooking the shimmering ocean. At Jumby Bay, it’s all just a moment away.
SPECIAL OFFER Jumby Bay - From £4950pp based on 2 sharing a Beachside Courtyard Suite, 7 nights, all inclusive, at reduced rates, including roundtrip car and boat transfers and round-trip BA World Traveller flights. Valid 16 Nov - 19 Dec. Saving £3250 per couple.

TALES FROM TENERIFE
The Grand Hotel Bahia Del Duque, Tenerife. With its statement architecture, colonial style, traditionally dressed staff and dreamlike views out onto the Atlantic, the Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque makes an immediate impression.
for breakfast, an area like a club lounge, and the mini bars are temptingly free. The Junior Suites are also lovely as they have just been refurbished and they have large balconies.
It is also in the heart of the action: you’re spoilt for choice with shops, a mall and restaurants if you want to venture out of the hotel. As for inside, there’s a buzz in the evenings that makes eating there feel like you’re dining in the village square of a Spanish village. The amphitheatre layout also makes for a great place to enjoy the entertainment.
On the other hand, we weren’t so impressed with the standard garden rooms. Upgrade (or persuade?) your way to a suite if you can.
GETTING THE RIGHT ROOMS
The stars of the show here are the hotel’s villas. Indeed, no other hotel in the area matches them. They’re upscale luxurious with acres of space and, as importantly, they’re set apart from the main hotel. In this elegant enclave they have their own checkin, pool and indeed restaurant (Las Aguas), which is exclusive to villa guests at breakfast. We also liked the Casa Ducales rooms for their sense of exclusivity. They have a separate area
THE INSIDE TRACK
The good news is that you don’t need to leave the hotel to eat well. The wonderful Asia Kan restaurant is a fusion of Japanese, Chinese & Thai influences, set in a minimalistic Japanese design. If you book with a half-board programme, dining here is part of the deal. And do try the Spicy Beef Shichimi, which we rated as outstanding. The hotel also offers fabulous facilities including a reading room with national and international press, a bridge and billiards room, a squash court, two tennis courts (and a tennis school), two paddle courts, pitch & putt, a botanical walk, ping pong, giant chess, gym (with aerobic, stretching, cross fit/ body training, and step classes) and even an astronomers’ observatory.
For more information please call 01244 567 000 or visit us at www.edencollection.co.uk
INDULGE
The hotel also boats a very large spa, complete with a Kinesis Gym and Chi Studio for pilates, yoga and meditation. It also offers a physiotherapy area by Michal Novotny, the noted physiotherapist & nutrition expert. But if you’d rather be out on with your clubs, there are no less than five golf courses within 17km of the hotel. The hotel is also great for kids, with a kids’ club and teen lounge. In fact, if you prefer your breaks kidsfree, avoid the school holidays because it is popular with families. All in all, a plush and comfortable place in which to be energetic, or just plain lazy.
SPECIAL OFFER Bahia - From £1150pp based on 2 sharing a Double Standard Room, 7 nights for 5, breakfast, including round-trip private car transfers and round-trip Euro Traveller flights. Valid for arrivals 1 Nov - 26 Dec, 3 - 31 Jan & 10 - 30 Apr. Saving £800 per couple.
Abama Golf & Spa Resort, Tenerife. Seen from a distance, the Abama Hotel looks like a proud Moorish citadel. Its ingenious architecture fuses North African traditions with Chinese influences. Gently coloured in faded terracotta that seems to change in hue with the passing of the day, the sprawling 469-room Abama pulls off the impossible: it sits in perfect harmony with its lush and breathtaking surroundings. It is also spacious: this private estate in Guía de Isora boasts some 160 acres. Yet, paradoxically, a sense of calm and intimacy pervades the hotel with its series of small, restful spaces amidst the mainstream business of holidaying. Abama also has its own private and protected beach, as well as a choice of seven heated pools.
GETTING THE RIGHT ROOM
We like the Tagor Villas 1-bedroom suites. The only catch: they’re in an adult-only enclave. The suites are splendidly spacious and beautifully decorated, and you can sit by the Tagor-guestsonly pool sipping complimentary beer, wine or soft drinks. Very civilised. For families, we suggest the Citadel accommodation. This is closer to the kids’ club and there are more interconnecting rooms too.
MOORISH HOTEL, MOREISH FOOD
With a choice of 14 bars and/or restaurants, you’re going to find the right food for the right occasion. Many a lunch is spent at the beach restaurant, where you can gaze out onto the ocean. While for something seriously special, would a chef with seven Michelin stars on his CV for the bill? Just take a seat and let Basque chef Martin Berasategui work his magic.
For more information please call 01244 567 000 or visit us at www.edencollection.co.uk
SWITCHING OFF
They have relaxation down to a fine art here. The Spa is excellent, and the sumptuous hydrotherapy area is a great place to get into the right, blissed-out state of mind before your treatment - which may include local materials including volcanic stones, mineralizing marine algae, and healing fruits such as papaya and banana. In total contrast, the kids’ club (Abami) is a happily manic - but also creative - feast of entertainment. Alongside the mp3s, wii’s and normal games and fun, there’s the Ball Pool, a science area with workshops, games and microscopes, a planetarium and lots more. Sport? Check out The Abama Sanchez Casal Tennis Academy. Or the challenging golf course with magnificent views over the Atlantic. For something everyone will love, there are helicopter island tours with commanding views of the cliffs, coastline and the volcano. We also strongly recommend setting aside a few hours to go out and watch the colonies of pilot whales and dolphins. Couple all this with year-round sun and warm, gentle breezes - and the Abama rises to the occasion every time.
SPECIAL OFFER Abama - From £1250pp based on 2 sharing a Junior Suite, 7 nights for 5, breakfast, including round-trip private car transfers and round-trip Euro Traveller flights. Valid for arrivals 1-17 Dec. Saving £900 per couple.

new ones and leaves a healthy natural glow to the skin.
SKIN CONCERN: LARGE PORES Beginning two months before your wedding day, Jayne can tailor a combination of special treatments to reduce the appearance of large pores, together with recommended skin products you can use at home.
Lifestyle fixes: Stay out of the sun as UV rays weaken collagen. And don’t squeeze blemishes! Trauma stretches pores.
For this condition a popular treatment recommended by Jayne is a full exfoliation with a lactic acid peel. However it is important that this treatment is preceded by the application of specialist creams for a period of two weeks prior to the peel. She may also recommend a dermabrasion treatment using a specially designed ‘mini vacuum’ with a diamond head. This removes dead skin cells, reveals healthy
Tip: Add a dermabrasion prior to any facial treatment to gain the maximum benefit.
SKIN CONCERN: FINE LINES & WRINKLES Dermalux light therapy treatment is a fantastic boost for your collagen, when used on the ‘LED near infra red light’ setting. Alongside this Jayne may recommend two Priori skin products, one for general fine lines and wrinkles and the other for under the eyes. Lifestyle fixes: For extra plumping, gulp eight glasses of water a day and snack on antioxidantrich fruits such as melons and berries. Also, sleep on a satin pillowcase to prevent skin creasing.
SKIN CONCERN: HYPERPIGMENTATION Bigger than freckles, pigmentation can appear after a single bad case of sunburn. The same Dermalux light therapy treatment reduces pigmentation as well as scars, and tightens and firms the skin. Jayne also recommends the CoffeeBerry range of skin lightening creams, including the idebenone complex. With more antioxidants even than green tea, it visibly reduces the appearance of irregular skin tones as well as fine lines and wrinkles. Lifestyle fixes: Don’t even think about a prewedding tanning session, unless you want Dalmatian spots on your wedding day! Sunscreen is super-important as some spots lighten by themselves with sun protection.

THE GENT MAGAZINE // CELEBRATING 175 YEARS OF PATEK PHILIPPE
Certain watch brands claim to have been established longer than Patek Philippe. However, most of those businesses closed in the course of time, only to be ‘re-invented’ under the same name with new people and a different ethos. Not so Patek Philippe. Like one of its watches, the business has ticked with uninterrupted continuity and elegance since 1 May 1839. To this day, the company is still domiciled in Geneva and headquartered on the Rue du Rhône. From day one, the brand started as it meant to go on: creating haute horlogerie with opulently decorated and highly complex creations. Enjoy them at your leisure in the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva’s Plainpalais district.
PATEK PHILIPPE IS DELIGHTED TO PRESENT THE GRAND EXHIBITION 2015 MAY 27TH TO JUNE 7TH 2015 Saatchi Gallery London Open to the public, free admission The exhibition will be a celebration: of Patek Philippe’s tradition as a maker of high-precision wristwatches, its 175 year history and its heritage in the domain of haute horlogerie. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover the last family-owned
Geneva watch company, immersing themselves into the world of Patek Philippe throughout the entire Gallery with access to over 400 exceptional pieces. Mark Hearn, The MD for Patek Philippe UK says: “We are proud of hosting this magnificent event in London, a multicultural city and a hub for business and tourists who come to visit from all over the world. If we can inspire and help visitors to understand and appreciate watchmaking, we will have achieved our objective.”
The Exhibition will be open to the public from 09.00 to 19.00 Monday to Saturday and 10.00 to 16.00 Sundays guided tours will be available daily in multiple languages. School trips are also part of the programme.

THE GENT MAGAZINE // CAD & THE DANDY
‘THOU SAYEST THOU HAS TWENTY POUNDS: GO INTO BIRCHIN LANE; PUT THYSELF INTO CLOTHES.’ William Shakespeare, The London Prodigal
It is only fitting (quite literally) that the most in-demand tailors of hand-made suits have their home in London. Cad & the Dandy is based both in Savile Row and in the City of London, close to the Birchin Lane of Shakespeare’s day and where the tailoring guilds, cloth merchants and weavers can be traced as long ago as 1297. Down the years, English sartorial style has been shaped by numerous influences. In particular, The English Civil Wars and, later, the Industrial Revolution sent the upper classes in search of more sober and practical wear, replacing the courtly excesses that had gone before. A new word for the dictionary - ‘bespoke’ - soon surfaced from Savile Row, referring to cloth that had been ‘spoken for’ by a customer.
After weaving, the cloth is naturally processed with soft Yorkshire water using the most modern machinery to give a beautiful, permanent finish. This classic English cloth, combined with Cad & the Dandy’s style, is timeless and always in place.
From the ground up
Where the trouser finishes, Cad & the Dandy’s sister company, Wildsmith, can continue to take care of your sartorial needs - just as they did for King George VI. Wildsmith created the first-ever slip-on loafer shoe, designed for the King. Over the years they have shod royalty and presidents, A-listers and simply anyone who cares about exquisite looks and cosseted comfort.
Today, Cad & the Dandy seeks to deliver quintessential English tailoring, affordably. Partner James Sleater comments: “We strive to offer the very best of English style and quality at much more competitive prices than our competitors. We have streamlined our business model and innovated in what is a relatively traditional industry. But we have not deviated from the quality of our cloth or our workmanship.” The cloth used is from Huddersfield in Yorkshire, the historical centre of England’s centuries-old woollen industry. It is soft and supple yet resilient and, typically, made from worsted merino wool. It is tightly woven with a traditional two fold weft to ensure quick recovery after wearing.

SCHOTT
THROUGH WITH AMERICAN COOL THE HISTORY OF SCHOTT NYC IS LIKE A HISTORY OF US YOUTH CULTURE.
This was the brand that dressed the young rookies in the US military in the 1940s. And made James Dean cool in the 50s. And made ‘Easy Rider’ off the charts cool in the 60s. Today, as the brand enters its 101st year, their mastery of leather and outerwear lives on. Founded by Irving Schott in 1913, the heritage outerwear brand made history with its iconic, asymmetrical jacket design, commonly known as the ‘Perfecto’. Inspired by this, Schott created an elite collection of premium jackets, all named ‘Perfecto Brand’ after Irving’s favourite cut of cigar. Today, a century on, Perfecto is still designed, hand produced and manufactured in the original family-run factory in New York. They still insist on the tried and tested methods of construction. And the best, most authentic materials, ranging from Woolrich wool of Pennsylvania to the hand-waxed cowhide from Martexin Original Wax. Perfecto says it all. www.schott.eu

MICHAEL PUTLAND: A LIFE IN MUSIC 50 YEARS ON THE ROAD 2014 MARKS FIFTY YEARS SINCE MICHAEL PUTLAND STARTED OUT ON A CAREER WHICH HAS SEEN HIM WITNESS MUSIC HISTORY IN THE MAKING; PHOTOGRAPHING THE FACES THAT CHANGED POPULAR MUSIC, IN AN ERA WHEN POPULAR MUSIC WAS CHANGING EVERYTHING ELSE. GETTY IMAGES GALLERY IS PRIVILEGED TO PRESENT MICHAEL PUTLAND: A LIFE IN MUSIC – 50 YEARS ON THE ROAD THIS AUTUMN.
David Bowie
Spanning five decades of musical heroes and genres, the exhibition features unguarded portraiture of the off-duty performer - John Lennon sits cross-legged in his socks. Elsewhere, bands looking for their first front cover stare down the camera with a studied sneer, imagining their faces on bedroom walls; The Clash glare from a New York dockyard – not looking quite as fearless as Tina Turner onstage in ’73. “It has been a fantastic ride though an incredible period of music history, which combined my two great, loves ... music and photography. Little did I appreciate, when my Uncle Alan encouraged my photography back in the 1950s, that this would lead me to photographing nearly all of my heroes ... and thrilled to be still finding new ones. A great never ending journey.” Michael Putland.

Half a century’s worth of shooting has produced an exhaustive body of work - reflecting the eye of not only an expert photographer, but also an involved music enthusiast. From the editorial work for Disc and Music Echo, Sounds, Smash Hits and Q magazine amongst others, to the 1973 tour with The Rolling Stones that led to a long-standing relationship working with the band, Michael has also shot prodigiously for major record labels including CBS, Warner, Elektra, Polydor, Columbia Records and EMI. Relocating to New York in 1977, it was here that Michael founded the photo agency Retna. For his sixth decade in the business, Michael continues to shoot the artists he most admires – likely to be jazz, classical and world musicians, who have always provided an alternative narrative to his rock music portfolio.
Director of Getty Images Gallery Louise Garczewska comments, “We are truly thrilled to be welcoming Michael Putland to the Gallery, introducing his work to our audience in this, his fiftieth year in the business. This exceptional and comprehensive collection offers a real insight into the times with all the excitement of the music translating into these remarkable portraits and scenes of life on the road.” With the majority of the exhibition hand-printed by Michael himself, each image is available to buy, signed by the photographer. We are also delighted to announce a number of exclusive limited edition prints, to celebrate the launch of the Michael Putland Collection at Getty Images Gallery. A guitar hangs suspended in a spotlight, its neck flung skywards, mimicking the arms of the crowd below, raised in adulation. There is a glimpse of the hand that caused the guitar to fly and the crowd to lift – it waves, blessing the whole scene. We can’t see a face, but it is the perfect portrait - not only of The Who’s Pete Townsend, but of rock ‘n’ roll itself. Shot by Michael Putland from behind a stack of amps, he is on the stage and yet behind the scenes – the photographer who manages to be everywhere at the same time, capturing it all, the seen and the unseen; sound and vision.

ONCE A CAR HAS APPEARED IN A MOVIE, IT IMMEDIATELY GAINS A CERTAIN CACHET. IF IT’S AN OSCAR-WINNING HALL OF FAME ACTION MOVIE, IT UPS THE ANTE STILL FURTHER. Put the coolest man in movie history behind the wheel (Steve McQueen in Bullitt) and you have a legend that will refuse to die. Fast forward to 2014 and the Ford Mustang has roared up to its 50th anniversary, and to mark to the occasion Ford is making just 1,964 cars available (a nod to its debut back in 1964). There is of course one more cachet you can add: since the car isn’t available here in the UK, you could have a left hand drive model shipped especially from the US. For a surprisingly modest £32,000 or so, import costs paid, you could have the entry-level 3.7-litre V6. Or, for around £35,000, you’ll get the 5.0-litre V8, and performance that rivals a BMW M4; the 0-60mph trip is estimated at just 5 seconds.
For sheer individuality and a piece of automotive (and movie) heritage, this is a car that delivers. If noticeability is important to you, the angry snarl under the hood is probably worth the money alone. But if you’re a purist, looking for build quality, handling, refinement and responsiveness - you may do better to look elsewhere. As What Car puts it: “While the Mustang is as fast as many European sports cars, it doesn't handle like them”. Inside, they say the cabin is bedecked with bland plastic and the music system “looks like it’s been lifted from an '80s Ford Sierra.” But perhaps that isn’t really the point here. This is a car that has deep reserves of cool, turns heads, has rocket-like propulsion - and is £23,000 less than a Mercedes C63 AMG Coupé. And since it’s the only time most of us will ever be mentioned in the same sentence as Steve McQueen - what’s not to like?

A NEW WAY OF CONCEIVING TIME AUTUMN-INSPIRED CHESTNUT As the leaves turn gold, so JEANRICHARD has with immaculate timing as ever - created a bold reinterpretation of their 1681 line. This on-season chestnut coloured timepiece also has a Physical Vapor Deposition coating, inspired by the automotive world to be ultra-resistant to scratching and to temperature variations. Traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology are also merged in the JR1000 self-winding Manufacture movement with three hands and date indication. Beating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, it is designed and assembled in the JEANRICHARD workshops at La Chaux-de-Fonds. Equipped with an oscillating weight with a brand new decoration, this movement can be admired through the watch's sapphire crystal case-back. Its ground-breaking structure requires 70 different operations, from stamping to final assembly - and the cushion-shaped case is wonderfully recognisable. It is the very essence of JEANRICHARD, being at once both traditional and contemporary.
AEROSCOPE 3 HANDS FLOATING LIKE AN AUTUMN LEAF A tribute to the conquest of the skies, JEANRICHARD's Aeroscope line is now expanded with a new timepiece with three hands, available in two types of case and five versions of the dial. Like an autumn leaf, the first impression is one of weightlessness: the case is made of titanium, a material so lightweight you almost forget there is watch on your wrist at all. Like a flight instrument, the Aeroscope 3 Hands watch features optimum reading of its displays, even in semi-darkness. The bezel also has a minute-circle marked out with 5-minute gradations, so you can read the time at a glance. Although there is no chronograph function, it delivers extraordinary accuracy as it beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.

THE DRAGON REDISCOVERS ITS FIRE THE GENT MEETS RONNIE KIMBUGWE, HEAD CHEF AT BEL & THE DRAGON, COOKHAM. As you approach its kitchen, and as the seductive aroma of roast suckling pig hijacks your every sense, it is hard to imagine that Bel & The Dragon was until recently unloved, run down and haemorrhaging money. Yet a transformation has taken place here. And it is not a case of good fortune or a presumed upturn in the economy. It is the arrival of a chef, imbued with self-belief and possessed of an extraordinary talent, that has changed everything. For the good burghers of Cookham, it is no longer burgers tonight. Continued...

From the legendary Ivy, to Senior Sous Chef at Gordon Ramsay’s Claridges, Ronnie’s move to Cookham fulfilled a long held dream to run his own restaurant in the countryside.

“My food has a modern twist and an element of surprise. But I champion the ingredient and use locally sourced produce. I buy the best produce I can, and cook it to the best of my ability.”
TWENTY FOUR //
The man in question is Ronnie Kimbugwe and, ironically, he’s an accidental chef. The script in his childhood head had always said he’d be a doctor, but even at an early age he was creating food. His mum - a serial entertainer who would have 15 for dinner, twice each week - not surprisingly needed help in her kitchen. The young Ronnie started to take care of a course or two. She (with an eye on his career and, no doubt, dinner parties yet to come) suggested he take things further with a proper cooking course.
After the frying pan, you know what comes next. He joined Gordon Ramsay’s Michelin-starred Claridges restaurant. He recalls now: “It was crazy. Working alongside Gordon Ramsay in the kitchen four days a week was epic. He taught me the core of my cooking knowledge.” No doubt it also extended his vocabulary.
While competitors in Cookham offered fish & chips, Ronnie presented lobster. Instead of burgers came fabulous steaks from legendary butcher Jack O’Shea. Even the tables got a flash of inspiration; outside, the table tops are actually blackboards that kids can draw on while their parents enjoy some much-needed sustenance. Roast chicken, suckling pig and Creedy Carver duck are also specialities, and the kitchen is equipped with a 600oC ‘Josper’ Grill, which Ramsay and Heston also swear by.
Ronnie says that something ‘just clicked’ and he enrolled in Culinary Arts Management at University College Birmingham with just £20 to his name. At least he could eat free.
However, four years in the Ramsay empire, including new restaurant openings and Ramsay’s TV project ‘The F Word’ took its toll. For a man who spends every waking minute preparing beautiful food, this 6’6” chef had nevertheless shrunk to 9 stone. He took a complete break, living life outside the kitchen and fully recharging the batteries.
Just as cream rises, so did Ronnie. After finishing his course he landed at the London Hilton and milked the experience for all it could teach him. Then came a leg-up: a job at the legendary Ivy in London. It was hot, frenzied, full-on - and confirmed to Ronnie that this was what he wanted to do.
After his return to the fray (where he was managing 56 people as Senior Sous Chef at Claridges), a long-held dream to work in the countryside came within his sights. The entrepreneur Joel Cadbury offered him the chance to turn around Bel & The Dragon in Cookham.
Ronnie comments: “My food has a modern twist and an element of surprise. But I champion the ingredient and use locally sourced produce. I buy the best produce I can, and cook it to the best of my ability.” Which, as Cookham has discovered, is considerable. www.belandthedragon-cookham.co.uk

RAISE YOUR GLASS TO GLASS Alex Kratena, Head Bartender at Artesian in London, is not only passionate about mixing the perfect cocktail. Perhaps it’s not so surprising that if I mention the word ‘cocktail’ you will immediately think of ingredients. Gin, whisky, brandy, vermouth; ice, twists, olives, fruit; salt, sugar, tabasco, spices… it sets the mind racing with delicious possibilities. But hold on a minute. What about the one thing that is indispensable to any cocktail: the glass? Just as actor needs a stage, a cocktail needs the right glass. As any mixologist will tell you, enormous skill and care goes into preparing the perfect cocktail - a symphony of flavours and textures blended in exquisite harmony. The very least this piece of liquid art deserves is perfect presentation. Yet striving for the right glass for your cocktail goes way beyond simply aesthetics. There are technicalities at play here too that fundamentally affect your enjoyment of the drink.
TWENTY SIX //
The glass needs to be selected with an eye on temperature and the way the ingredients meld together. It also plays a vital role in the way the drink is introduced to your palate. You experience a cocktail and its myriad flavours in a very different way to someone in a pub quaffing beer. This is why the best bars think not only of cocktails but of glass. Indeed, at Artesian we have gone one better: for some time now we have been teaming up with our designer friends at Inkorporate to create the definitive range of cocktail glassware. It has been exciting as ideas which started out on paper have become a beautiful reality. And that our life’s work in the form of cocktail artistry gets the individual presentation it deserves.

THE GENT MAGAZINE // AMERICAN DREAM TOUR
THE CALL OF THE ROAD:
WELCOME TO PETROLHEAD NIRVANA. Maybe you’re in the last days and months of freedom before settling down. Or perhaps you’re trapped in a corporate suit, hungering for a dream tour of places and spaces you only see in the movies. If so - you’re a prime candidate for PetrolheadNirvana.com. They can take you away from all this; read the memories here of a group who took the American Dream tour to San Francisco.
“It started with an idea, one of those back of the fag packet moments that normally get tossed into the bin after the last one has been smoked. Each of us had driven roads all over the West Coast of America and begged to differ when told that all of them were straight and boring. We also knew that the latest C6 Corvette was a car worthy of higher praise than it ever received outside of the USA. So, why not put them together? Great roads, a great car, friendly people and a new adventure for Petrolhead Nirvana. The first stop was in the Pacific Coast town of Santa Cruz, home of the film ‘The Lost Boys’. We parked up at our hotel (with reserved parking of course) and wandered onto the boardwalk, checking for Vampires. Dinner was on ‘The Wharf’ (or the pier as we would call it). Fresh seafood with an ocean view. A perfect end to the first day.
the mythical Pacific Coast Highway. This gorgeous ribbon of tarmac follows the coast as if it had been traced onto the edge of the cliffs by a draughtsman. The sight of six yellow Corvettes threading their way through the hills was to become familiar to us, but would never get old. As for the locals, they greeted us like celebrities. We had a little detour across the hills which was all about fun technical driving. It was a real eye opener to everyone, a deserted road with perfectly cambered bends twisting one way then the other before descending back down to the coast - and yet another beachfront hotel with views across their own wharf and of course the mighty Pacific ocean.
DAY 3
DAY 2
Today the satnav files we had devised would come into their own, as would the powerful licensed walkie talkies. First was a taste of the movies, taking in Malibu beach, Beverley Hills and Mulholland Drive (Jay Leno’s favourite road).
We hit the road heading South - destination Santa Barbara. Taking Highway 1 past Laguna Seca, Monterey Bay and Pebble Beach, we then peeled off the main road onto the first of many amazing roads:
The banter over the walkie talkies was all about how many Priuses (or is the plural Pri’i?) were parked in driveways made for Ferraris.
TWENTY EIGHT //
A relaxing stop for lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe on Hollywood Boulevard, then on to the 7000ft climb up the Angeles Crest Highway to our night’s stop in Barstow. It reminded us of the film ‘From Dusk ‘till Dawn’; true American kitsch.
DAY 4 Talking of kitsch - today we were headed for its capital, via the stunning Mojave National Park. But first a fun detour to the Calico Ghost town, an old mining settlement re-born as a tourist attraction, complete with cowboys, saloons and a piano that stops when you walk in. Then it was on to the stunning beauty of Mojave, with long straights, gentle bends and undulations testing the Corvettes’ suspensions. We hit Las Vegas in some style, our six yellow Corvettes cruising along the strip and, literally, stopping the traffic in its tracks. In a town born of excess, we had made an entrance worthy of true high rollers. With two nights in Vegas, we could really hit the town. Details are sketchy, and that’s just as it should be. What goes on tour, stays on tour. CONTINUED...
TWENTY NINE //
This 9-mile one-way stretch of road twists and turns its way through narrow canyons and stunning rock formations. Perfect tarmac and cambers, sweeping bends, 90 degree corners and hairpins - we just had to do it twice.
DAY 5 Breakfast was actually lunch, in an off-strip restaurant called Hot‘n’juicy - famous for its appearance on Man Versus Food. Soft shell crab, crawfish, langoustines, lobster and more. Later we checked out the local Chevy dealership to ask about Corvettes - yes, we liked them that much. Then it was onto the casinos to try and pay for them.
DAY 6 Death Valley, seen from Zabriskie point. The beautiful sedimentary rock formed by Furnace creek lake, and which dried up 5 million years ago, takes your breath away. Death Valley is also home to a wonder of road building known as Artists’ Drive. This 9-mile one-way stretch of road twists and turns its way through narrow canyons and stunning rock formations. Perfect tarmac and cambers, sweeping bends, 90 degree corners and hairpins - we just had to do it twice.
That night found us in the town of Bishop, eating Sushi and Tempura. Weird geographically, but great gastronomically.
tour. We talked about it long into the night over dinner in Modesto.
DAY 8 DAY 7 First destination today was the US answer to the Dead Sea: it’s called Mono Lake, flanked by hills that mark the entrance to Yosemite National Park. After the barren, roasted Death Valley it’s a culture shock to be among snow covered mountains and lush greenery. The roads up there in Yosemite remind us of the Alpine roads we love. We descend (from almost 10,000 feet in some places) into the valley where boulders have been falling over a few thousand years. They’re partly hidden by the giant Sequoias - the oldest of which is 3,500 years old. Much as we love the road, we keep making frequent photo stops. Without forgetting the quality of the roads, which have been amazing with more twists and turns than you could wish for, Yosemite has been a jaw-dropping conclusion to the American Dream
A short drive to San Francisco, enjoying the company of the other corvettes and remembering just what an impact they have on the locals. The Corvette is America’s Ferrari and we’ve been greeted with smiles and thumbs up wherever we’ve been. Not surprisingly we attract the attention of the police and the local security guys. But all they want to know about is the cars, the very dirty cars that have just given us a week we will never forget. Petrolhead Nirvana arranges driving tours in beautiful cars in the UK and Europe, and The American Dream West Coast Tour.

Thy Will be done If you’re an EU citizen with property or other assets abroad, make sure the ‘right’ law will apply to your estate. Legal expert Simon Goldring explains how.
As you’ll know, a guiding principle of the EU is free movement across borders. Sadly, it’s not a freedom you can always apply to inheritances. If your estate happens to be spread across more than one territory, your beneficiaries may come up against a serious problem. In some countries, ‘heirship’ rules may decree that your estate is distributed according to family hierarchy. If this chimes with your plans all well and good, but if not, some undesirable obstacles arise at the estate planning stage, and after you’ve died.
WHICH LAW APPLIES TO YOU? The EU Succession Regulation (or ‘Brussels IV’) is an attempt to find a unified approach to the fractured issue of succession. It does this by identifying a single succession law which will govern an estate and bypass the complexities of different laws applying to moveable and immovable assets. As to which territory’s law should apply, this is driven by where you were ‘habitually resident’ and is regardless of whether you die with or without a valid Will. The meaning of ‘habitual residence’ remains undefined, although it has evolved to be essentially (and unhelpfully) a question of fact. The exception is if you were clearly more closely connected to another country, and your executors could prove it.
THE SOLUTION: MAKE A CHOICE NOW If you’re from the EU, the good news is that you can choose to apply the law of your nationality by stating so in a ‘testamentary disposition’. So even though the UK has not opted in to Brussels IV, you may still take this ‘choice of law’ option. Consider the example of Jane, a UK national who owns an apartment in Paris. She can now elect in her Will for the law of her nationality (i.e. English law) to apply to the succession of her property, and avoid the French’s forced heirship regime. However, she has to make this deliberate choice; if not, the French regime continues to apply. It is also important to get expert advice if you are not a UK national. You will not have the option of choosing English law, so the destination of your UK assets will still be determined by whether they are movable or immovable. Brussels IV came into force in 2012, although its effects will not be felt until after 17 August 2015. If you have a cross-border estate, you should therefore seek advice to revise your Wills and carry out estate planning now. In this way, you can make sure that your estate receives the full benefits offered by the new regulation.
