Design is about making beautiful things work harmoniously. And that demands a multidisciplinary team to address every artistic, technical and physical aspect. So whether your project is a single room in a loft apartment, an entire country house, a boutique hotel or a yacht, the UBER Team has the collective artistic and technical skills to make it happen, seamlessly. The UBER Team’s award-winning individual companies are responsible for creating some of the finest residential environments around the world. It therefore made sense to bring these classleading enterprises together to support architects with a special turnkey solution that adds value to their projects. These teamed-up partnerships touch on all aspects of interior and exterior design. Our non-exclusive menu system means you can choose only the areas you need. But the more we’re involved, the greater the potential to compress timelines and make financial savings by engaging an existing and harmonious team. There are no ‘typical’ team members at UBER. Indeed, we’ve made a point of drawing talent from far and wide. They come from high-end residential design, retail and leisure, marine and even aviation industries. And many have won multiple awards in their specialist fields. You’ll find examples of their work on pages 12, 36 and 40, (with the obvious exception of our support specialists such as data cablers and electricians, whose handiwork is, by design, invisible). The UBER Team promise you fresh perspectives, inquiring minds, and a healthy questioning of conventional wisdom. Let us surpass your expectations.

UBER Simon Evans

We talk you through the engineering and design prowess of the new Ferrari F12 and take you to one of the most desirable destinations in the Caribbean for some muchneeded winter sun. Sensory International show us their marriage guidance skills by addressing the conundrum often thought of as mutually exclusive: a house brimming with state of the art technology and home entertainment, versus design lead, clutter free styling with not a lead or remote in sight. And for the ultimate in desirable objects for stylish interiors we have rounded up our Magnificent 7.

Simon’s passion for design, and his appetite for product and process knowledge, was fired up during successful self-builds and commissions for prestigious developers. This inspired his dream to create a centre of design excellence - a dream fulfilled with the creation of UBER in 2009.

We love creating, discovering and sharing beauty. We’ll go the extra mile to take your breath away whether you’re a client, a reader - or both. So welcome to UBER Lifestyle.

Virgin SNOW UBER seeks out the best in design - Verbier Lodge

Sir Richard Branson’s sumptuous ski lodge can be yours this winter.

The verbier lodge

Verbier is a true skiers’ ski resort. If you’re passionate about skiing, you’ll know it’s recognised as offering some of the world’s very best off-piste skiing, with a variety of steep slopes and varied conditions. In addition to the town itself at 1500m, you can head up to Mont Fort at 3330m, from where you can see both the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc. Of course, Verbier is also simply a fabulous place to be, attracting everyone from Prince Harry and the royal families of Sweden and Denmark, to Diana Ross, James Blunt and Lawrence Dallaglio.

And indeed Sir Richard Branson, who loved the place so much he bought it - well, at least a magnificent piece of real estate called the Verbier Lodge. The Verbier Lodge is a breathtaking ninebedroomed residence, and whether you’re a serious skier, a party animal, or both, it may just be time to gather together 18 of your very favourite people. Situated on a quiet road just 250m from the main ski lifts and backing onto one of the returning pistes, The Lodge could not be better located for the ultimate skiing experience.

5

The inside story Inside, The Verbier Lodge is the very essence of a perfect ski lodge: warm, snug and beautifully conceived and designed to give your party a truly memorable stay. The dining and living areas set the tone: spacious and welcoming, they’re the scene for many a long evening with good company, log fires and steaming plates of hearty food. Large glass windows give extraordinary views over the Alpine landscape. Then there’s a party room where you can also shoot pool or watch a movie. There’s a 9m indoor heated pool, and a large 12-person Jacuzzi where you can soothe aching limbs that have been shocked into action on the slopes.

There’s a steam room where you can purify the pores, and a well-equipped gym to galvanise the muscles. There’s a treadmill, bike, cross-trainer and free weights station, with a plasma screen TV, DVD player and music system to keep you entertained. Or, after an active day on the slopes or hiking in the mountains, there’s the Virgin Touch Spa in the capable hands of a resident beauty therapist. Of course, Verbier is also an idyllic Alpine summer escape. So when the snow goes, the town turns to a host of other pleasures. There’s a great sports centre with large indoor and outdoor swimming pools, biking and hiking, squash and tennis, numerous golf courses and even a professional covered ice rink.

gleneagles Uber’s highland fling

‘Gleneagles’. It may instantly say golf to you, or indeed conjure all the things that make Scotland so special, from breathtaking vistas to misty forests. All this and more needed to be respected and celebrated when The Design Practice by Uber was invited to design the interior of a lodge, practically on the 3rd pin of the famous golf course.

Local materials such as stone and oak cladding, and the exposed timber structure, help to soften the sheer scale of this most open of plans

Gleneagles The assignment: to design the interior of a contemporary retreat, located at the famous golf course. The brief: to create an almost contradictory traditional and cosy retreat, with open plan expanses, ripe for many a weekend’s lavish entertaining, with every leadingedge technology and lavishly comfortable. The two-and-a half storey entertaining hall announces loud and clear the lodge’s sociable ethos, and envelopes the 8 ft. DK Home Stocky floor lamps flanking the traditional stone fireplace. But local materials such as stone and oak cladding, and the exposed timber structure, help to soften the sheer scale of this most open of plans. With a houseful of guests, the grand entertaining hall becomes a welcoming hub, with a glass balcony to look over the proceedings. Yet the lodge is also counterpointed by intimate nook and cranny spaces for quiet contemplation (or indeed a much-needed doze after 18 holes). Relaxation is the constant theme, with a stone topped bar complete with a mighty stag’s head, various snugs, sauna, steam

and gym facilities. There is even a indoor golf simulator when the weather turns particularly Scottish. The centrepiece of the entrance hall, and backing on to the dining hall, is a ‘Tree Sofa’. Almost an art installation, it was cut from a single trunk to create a huge seating arrangement - and an instant talking point for the diner guests seated in the open hall. This substantial new-build property features six substantial bedroom suites and a seventh annex, each offering a different take on a similar design concept with luxurious fabrics and a discrete nod to Scottish roots using modern complementing patterns and tartans. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, automated controls (accessed from iPads) take care of the cinema, TV’s, lighting, heating and energy efficiency.

Despite its evident modernity, the interior of the lodge feels like an organic continuation of its exterior. Sheer horsepower The Ferrari F12 Berlinetta The fastest road car ferrari have ever made with the kind of boot space you’d expect from an executive car

Ferrari F12 Berlinetta

Although to realise anything more than onethird of its power legally, you’ll need to find your nearest autobahn. For this is a 730bhp supercar with a 7-speed double clutch gearbox, capable of more than 211mph. The trip from 0-62 is achieved in just 3.1 seconds of your life (and what seconds…).

Performance, red in tooth and claw. It is near impossible to hear the name ‘Ferrari’ without conjuring images in your mind of adrenaline-pumping speed. Just as it’s inconceivable picturing anyone other than beautiful people behind the wheel. That’s just the way it is. It’s the law. Now Ferrari has reinforced that perception, and more, with the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. Simply, it is the fastest supercar they have ever made that is designed for use on the public highway.

It makes its predecessor, the 599GTB, look almost snailish. Ferrari have packed an extra 119bhp into this new phenomenon - the biggest increase they have ever achieved as an upgrade over a predecessor - and yet this mighty package has also lost weight; some 60kg. But for those whose blood runs Ferrari-red, certain traditions remain reassuringly intact. Just like the 275GTB half a century ago, the new car’s normally aspirated V12 engine is placed in the nose and the gearbox sits between the two rear wheels. Two human beings are also allowed.

Continued >>

29

The car in a quarter of a million In the stratosphere of supercars, The F12 is right up there when it comes to the price tag. The F12 costs £239,736, an increase of over £27,000 (or an Audi) over its predecessor. And you could even argue you’re getting less car for your money: The F12 is more compact with less length, width, wheelbase and height. Add a few options, as most Ferrari drivers will, and you’re looking at £250,000. But for many, the engine alone will justify everything: it stacks up powerfully against others on the grid. From under 6.3-litres it generates a mighty 730bhp at 8250rpm. That’s 70bhp more than a 599GTO and 39bhp more than its closest rival, the Lamborghini Aventador. Even when you put it next to a million pound Bugatti Veyron, the 448bhp per tonne ratio compares favourably. Or bring on a McLaren F1. It will beat it to both 60mph and 125mph, with its double-clutch

Ferrari F12 Berlinetta

gearbox meaning that there’s no pause between shifts. The response from the engine feels almost like it has limitless reserves of power. It may therefore seem strange to discuss ‘practicality’ in a review of this beast. A hard core Ferrari disciple is hardly bothered by such trifles. But the fact is, you may want to go places, buy things, or stay over somewhere and require some luggage. Despite its smaller size, the clever design means it’s still spacious in the cockpit with plenty of headroom and legroom. But the real surprise is the boot: remove the shelf that separates it from the main compartment and you have the kind of storage space you’d expect from a large executive car. Astonishing. So if that helps to sell the idea to your partner that you need a Ferrari for its practical features, go ahead. It might just work.

that stuns Much imitated, but never surpassed, natural stone tiling on floors and walls plays a host of starring roles in the most design-conscious of homes.

means they can specify precisely what you want - and, crucially, they pass on significant savings by dealing direct.

hand-finished limestone and marble fireplaces; and individually made vanity units and wet room slabs.

With its natural allure (and, of course, strength) stone is perfect for everything from a subtle presence to a show-stopping design statement. And in the hands of a specialist, it becomes even more exciting and versatile.

Couple this with their formidable knowledge and expert installation teams, and it’s no surprise that seemingly ‘impossible’ design projects are given to Terzetto to solve.

Just as importantly, they offer you a unique advisory service on every aspect of installation. If you’re handling the job yourself, this includes expert guidance right down to choosing the best stone sealers, adhesives and grout. You are also very welcome to preview your stone in their warehouse, before it’s delivered.

Terzetto at work Terzetto is one of the North of England’s leading suppliers of high quality natural stone. For the last 18 months, they’ve also been working their magic on the North West’s best interiors from their showroom in Knutsford. With Sensory,

marital harmony comes as standard

As you know, UBER Lifestyle is never one to stereotype the sexes. Perish the thought. But are we wrong in painting the following case study as a classic tussle between male and female? Picture if you will the conundrum faced by the automation gurus at our friends, Sensory. They recently tackled a brief that involved a man who treasured his vast collection of audio and visual entertainment, and wanted a state of the art hardware system without any compromise whatsoever. And then there was the lady of the house, who was determined that the family home should be just that - a home, not a digital entertainment showroom. So that meant minimal technological encroachments, and no visible cabling or freestanding equipment. Oh, and could Sensory make sure the system was easily operated by their young children? All eyes were on Sensory to design and implement a multi-room entertainment system complete with automated lighting. And it needed to be seamless and elegant in a century-old home which, like most period properties, had very little scope for cable runs and conduits. No pressure there then.

uber-lifestyle.com // 0845 0773280

Enlightened lighting In its own way, lighting can be every bit as demanding as huge plasmas or drop down projectors. Sensory’s solution was to combine their experience in lighting aesthetics with purposeperfect technology: a Rako lighting control system that is actually wireless - perfect for those quirky period walls. In the bedrooms, this allowed very narrow minimalist spotlights together with ‘hidden’ pelmet lighting. This enabled ceilings to be squared around the eves but heightened in the centre of the rooms to provide – if required – very soft lighting over the centre of the rooms, bright lights over wardrobes, and traditional bed side lamps. Downstairs rooms were bedecked with down lights, pendants and low level lights – all programmed with dimmable, customisable schemes. The narrow beam feature lighting also extends to the exterior of the property, where spots are fitted into the soffits and controlled on a timer and, or remotes.

And so to the entertainment side of the project, the epicentre of which was the drawing room. At first sight, it’s a lovely restful room with Westwood wallpaper and windows to the side and rear gardens. But simply touch the remote (or the iPad), and a hidden projector screen drops down from the ceiling, blackout blinds lower to darken the windows, the lights dim and an inwall mounted projector gets set to emblazon the screen with pin-sharp clarity and depth of colour. In moments, you’re transported to the Etihad Stadium, or the front row of the O2, or your favourite movie theatre. A high-end 5.1 Linn cinema surround system – hidden in a custom sideboard – springs into life. This delivers outstanding audio to the room, as well as to others via the CD and Blu ray players, and the Skybox. There is also a Linn digital streaming player fed by a server (housed elsewhere in the property) capable of storing thousands of albums, and playing internet Radio and podcasts.

In the living room, an ingenious mirror TV (a ‘normal’ mirror that is also a 40” plasma) is teamed up with directional in-ceiling speakers to give that high-end, yet discreet, system the brief demanded. The playroom has its own 5.1 Artcoustic surround sound system with an in-wall 46” plasma, where the children can use games consoles and watch TV without disturbing Mum and Dad. The kitchen also has an in-wall TV, with a piano-black frame designed to complement the black granite worktops and bespoke table.

“This project worked beautifully because we approached the clients in a spirit of a partnership. At the project’s outset, the template was agreed and samples signed-off. Then, with the clients in residence, the project evolved on a roomby-room basis. Sensory also worked closely with the client’s other contractors to deliver a project that was on-brief, ontime and on-budget”. Neil Sherman from Sensory

Job done Although this house positively bristles with technology, it is still first and foremost a family home. Each space is dominated by its furniture, wallhangings and centrepieces. It has a clear design concept (art deco cornices and skirtings, plain floor coverings, common light keypads/in ceiling lighting that complements the original features...) that provides a natural flow, while giving full rein to its AV secrets at the touch of the button.

UBER seeks out the best in private island retreats

Isolation at its most splendid Petit St. Vincent In your dreams, you’ve been.

What is it about an island that taps deep into our subconscious? Particularly when - even better - that island is privately owned, carefully preserved and, until 50 years ago, uninhabited? The island of Petit St Vincent (PSV) is one of the Grenadine dots on the map amidst the vast blue of the Caribbean Sea. And it is indeed ‘petit’, comprising just 115 acres filled with lush vegetation and fringed with two miles of movie-like white sand. To step ashore is to see a Caribbean island at its most naturally beautiful and ‘unimproved’. So although luxury has been subtly and artfully introduced, there is no TV here. No internet. Not even a phone. In your dreams, you’ve been to PSV. Now, perhaps, it is time to wake up there.

Where will you stay? A 1-bedroom cottage There is something delightfully homely about a cottage. A million miles from soulless hotel rooms, these cottages are built of native stone and wood, and are discreetly scattered over the island’s hillsides, cliffs and beaches. From the moment you arrive, you feel more like an invited guest than a ‘customer’, and the vistas and tranquillity of PSV and the southern Grenadines soon start to work their magic. Each cottage is beautifully finished, with extravagant linens, crafted furniture and luxurious fittings. All creature comforts are also included with refrigerated minibars, Nespresso coffeemakers, Bose iPod docks and the whisper of air-conditioning. A 2-bedroom cottage There are six beachfront, two-bedroom villas, each offering more than 1100 square feet of luxury. Each bedroom has its own large bathroom. The master room boasts a king size bed and the second room has two queen size beds. The welcome breeze of the trade winds threads through the large patios and openair structures, as you doze in hammocks and loungers and re-write the definition of laziness.

Covered pavilions create a large open air living and dining area between the two bedrooms, overlooking new decks and the beach, while offering privacy and a little respite from the sun.

Meanwhile, down at the West End beach, they fire up the barbecues for a feast that comes straight from the sea.

Bon appetit

With no phone calls for you to answer or no appointments to keep, PSV is a place where a spa can really do its work.

A vital ingredient of any travel is good food. On PSV, like on other small islands, the focus is on what’s local and fresh. However, the incoming supplies also include many of the world’s delicacies together with expertly chosen drinks for the bar and the cellar. At the elegant main restaurant and bar overlooking the harbour, the cuisine is the equal of the view before you: it’s all sublime. Or you might choose The Beach Restaurant which murmurs with the convivial company of fellow guests, visiting yachtsmen with a tale to tell, newlyweds, travellers - all of island life is here. You can also linger over a late lunch or an early evening cocktail, sand between your toes, under the shade of thatched roofs and palms.

The Spa

In keeping with the ultra laid-back style of the island, PSV has an expert team of spa therapists and four open-air (but optionally air-conditioned) treatment rooms. Here you can experience a simple facial, a deep tissue massage or simply surrender to relaxation on another plane on the relaxation deck. There have been nearly 750,000 burglaries in the last year. You should be alarmed. Why more and more people are getting themselves alarmed with Sensory security. Sensory International is a home automation specialist. And when we’re not installing leading edge audio and video entertainment systems, we’re busy helping to keep homes like yours safe and sound with state of the art security technology.

MONITORING

We do this in a number of ways, whether you need to upgrade your existing system or start from scratch.

PERIMETER SECURITY

DOOR / GATE ENTRY A good start to any security system is a door or gate entry system. This will allow you to see and talk to visitors at your property entrance using audio and video handsets.

INTRUDER ALARMS The greatest worry for most of us is the thought of someone getting into our home, particularly at night. Sensory Secure offers a variety of proven technologies, designed and applied through long experience to your individual needs.

One step better than a basic alarm or CCTV is a monitored system. At any time, day or night, if your alarm or CCTV is activated, the relevant emergency services can be automatically alerted.

Where security is paramount, the latest generation of infra-red technology means that 24 hour surveillance is now possible and biometric access control can ensure that only verified family members or staff can gain entry to private areas.

REFURBISHMENT AND MAINTENANCE Sensory can take over your existing system, advise on any necessary upgrades and continue to test and maintain it. Naturally, we also support our own new installations with full parts and labour warranties, and maintenance programmes to safeguard your security for years to come.

FREE CONSULTATION CCTV Once just for businesses, CCTV is now part of the front-line defence of a family home. It can be used as a visible deterrent, or sensitively installed in order to be unobtrusive.

Sensory is delighted to visit your home, appraise your current system and advise on any improvements you might need. This costs you nothing, and there is no obligation.

Built for some of the coldest regions on earth, Arctic Cabins barbecues are an all year round toasty experience.

Arctic Cabins

For those sizzling December nights Up in Finland, they worked out a simple fact a long time ago: in Northern Europe, it isn’t often BBQ weather. Unless, that is, you build yourself a snug, cosy, warm-as-toast Arctic cabin - with a barbecue at its heart. Arctic Cabins Ltd has done all the hard work for you and here in the North-West, it means it’s BBQ weather every day of the year. For more than 10 years, Arctic Cabins has been offering their cabins in the traditional Finnish style.

This includes sloping walls which not only makes them look distinctive from the outside, but also gives them a greater sense of space on the inside. The slope also means more comfort to relax, allowing you to sit in a slightly reclined position. All the key components are sourced from countries in the Arctic Circle and then manufactured in the UK, from the barbecue itself to the shingle on the roof and the tight grained redwood that is resistant to warp and shrinkage. Inside, the cabin is completed with Finnish handicrafts and tableware.

On a cold winter’s night, snuggled amongst traditional reindeer hides before a roaring fire, you could easily be in a cabin in Lapland. Arctic Cabins creates your cabin to order from their workshop in Derbyshire. Owner Gareth Parkinson tells us:

We love nothing more than welcoming you to our showroom, introducing you to this wonderful Arctic tradition - and working with you to create your own perfect cabin.

The champagne theme continues with the magnificent Chateau ‘Les Crayeres’ in Reims, a hotel effervescent with style in the heart of Champagne territory. And what better way to shoot down there than in the brand new F-type Jaguar? We preview this latest pure bred cat before it is unleashed in Spring 2013. The only way to fly. Privately. The ski season. The perfect time to discover Private Jet Charter.

the sea and be on the slopes of Valberg or Auron by mid-morning? That’s just one idea – and we can help you with many more.

No queues for checking in baggage. No getting half undressed to get through security. No scrum at boarding time. No empty carousels because they’ve lost your bags. No wonder more and more people are discovering the unadulterated bliss of flying with Private Jet Charter. A private jet is simply the most fabulous way to fly. But the chances are you’ve never even considered it: surely, private jets are for oligarchs, bankers and Hollywood A-listers? Not any more. Private Jet Charter has grown by making comfort, ease and great service affordable. And what better time than the ski season to make that discovery yourself? We can fly you and your family and friends from your local airport. Forget queues: you’re whisked through like VIPs, out onto the apron and up the aircraft’s steps. You can be sure all your luggage

Even the cost is comfortable and skis are right there with you. There’ll be no delays because the passenger in row 58 is still in the bar. And as you cruise above the mountains, a glass of Champagne in hand, you know you’ll be landing closer to the skiing.

From steps to slopes in 1 hour

For example, we can fly you to Sion Airport in the heart of the Alps, perfectly located for Verbier, les 4 Vallées, Saas-fee and Zermatt. You can be off the aircraft and on the slopes within the hour. Private Jet Charter also means freedom that commercial travellers can only yearn for. For example, how about flying down to Cannes’ private jet-only airport, stay at the beautiful Art Deco Belles Rives beach hotel, have breakfast by

As for the cost, we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. As a guide, a return trip for 6 passengers from London to Sion in a Citation Jet 2 would cost around £6,600 for a long weekend. And a round trip on a Citation XLS from London to Cannes for a 3 day trip would cost around £9300 for 8 passengers. When you think of all the style, the convenience, the possibilities - and the memories - Private Jet Charter really is the only way to fly. But a word of warning: once you’ve experienced it, there’s no turning back… Contact Private Jet Charter www.privatejetcharter.com for a personalised quote. Range Rover The dynasty has a new heir EIGHT //

The Gent magazine // Range rover

While there is no such thing as a perfect car, there’s a legion of aficionados who believe that their Range Rover comes tantalisingly close. Since 1970, this design classic has bounced across fields, scaled mountains, parted fords and dispensed a million picnics in the car parks of Goodwood and Twickenham, point-to-points and school sports days. Its status as the preeminent SUV is all but bullet-proof. So as Range Rover approaches its fourth incarnation, the collective breath of those fans has been nervously held. The prospect of some ill-judged tinkering with its DNA would not be welcome. Now, they can breathe easy. The great grandchild of the first Range Rover is about to be born, and the signs are that the design team has triumphed, producing some radical improvements, yet in the true Range Rover guise.

The car looks broader, with the wheels filling the wheel arches more fully. It has a similar but more rounded nose. And the famous gills, although no longer part of the car’s ‘breathing’ system, are now a styling feature on the forward part of the front side doors. But these subtle refinements belie a fundamental re-think when it comes to the body as a whole. The new Range Rover marks one of the biggest changes in its 40 year history by dispensing with steel in favour of an all-aluminium body structure.

Land Rover unveils their fourth generation Range Rover.

This delivers a hefty saving in weight of at least 350kg, which in turn unleashes a host of advantages that comes from what engineers call ‘mass de-compounding’. It opens up a range of new engine options; better fuel economy; and of course a considerable gain in CO2 emissions efficiency. Suspension parts, brakes and other components can also be lighter, as the advantages feed from each other. This has led to the option of a new smaller baseengine option: a diesel V6 that is lighter than the traditional V8s, and that takes the total weight saving up to 420kg.

It is only on close inspection that the new Range Rover reveals its exterior secrets.

Following the industry trend, the new Range Rover is more customisable than ever before, with a host of equipment, trim, paint and material options to explore and specify.

Inside the doors

Forecasts say there will be 22 million SUVs worldwide by 2020. Looked at another way, that means there will be countless pale imitations of the Range Rover on the world’s roads and tracks. However, it’s a testament to this 1970’s concept that, for many drivers, the Range Rover continues to stand without equal. Following the industry trend, the new Range Rover is more customisable than ever before, with a host of equipment, trim, paint and material options to explore and specify. This includes ‘Executive Class’ seating: two individual, fullyadjustable rear seats. Current owners will also see a noticeable absence of switches. There are now 50% fewer

of them on the dashboard in creating a clean and uncluttered look. And although the new wheelbase is 40mm longer, the legroom in the rear has grown by a capacious 120mm.

Under the bonnet

32.5mpg. The 4.4-litre model costs from £78,095. Finally, there’s the 5.0-litre supercharged model, which will propel you from 0-60mph in a fleeting 5.1 seconds. Cost: from £98,395.

And so to the detail.

For more information about the new Range Rover go to: www.landrover.com

The new Range Rover gives you three choices. The first is the new entry-level 254bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel model in Vogue trim. It emits 196g/ km of CO2, and averages 37.7mpg. Cost: from £71,295 when it goes on sale in January.

Guy Salmon Land Rover Manchester Road, Knutsford, Cheshire, WA16 0ST T: 01565 632525 E: salesmanager@landrover-knutsford.co.uk

The second option is powered by an upgraded version of the 4.4-litre V8 of the current Range Rover. The improved unit delivers a cut in emissions from 253g/km to 229g/km, while average economy is up from 30.1mpg to

The Gent magazine // girard-perregaux Watches

Girard-Perregaux A name to have up your sleeve At The Gent, we present a brand too exclusive to be famous. Sometimes, it is the ultra-fine and superlative brands of the world that slip under our collective radar. Usually, this is because they occupy the narrowest of niches. They speak to a very select few, and thrive on being the very opposite of mass-market and famous. They also have a price tag to match. Girard-Perregaux is just such a brand: a watch maker of the very oldest Swiss school. Their activities stretch back two centuries and, today, they still hold a remarkable distinction: along with Patek Philippe, theirs is the only fully Swiss watch. Every component, both external and in the movement itself, has been designed, created, developed and made in Switzerland, with all the standards, tradition and expertise that suggests.

Vintage 1945 Tourbillion with three gold bridges - £154,000 – LIMITED EDITION

Winding back time

Has your time come?

The origins of Girard-Perregaux date back to 1791 and a talented young watch maker called Jean-François Bautte. He quickly became known for his extra-thin watches, and in a move still echoed by the company’s ethos today, gathered all the key watchmaking trades around him. The fruits of his passion and dedication duly came. He received the future Queen Victoria as a visitor and was soon doing business with all the major European royal courts as he became one of the most celebrated watchmakers of his day.

Today, Girard-Perregaux presents an exquisite collection of models for both men and women. Prices start at around £7,000, with some of their Haute Horlogerie limited editions commanding up to £850,000. Now for the first time, Girard-Perregaux has appointed an official distributor of its exquisite work in the UK. For more information and to arrange a viewing contact Mark Worthington on 01625 532 532.

Of course, a watch is much more than a thing of beauty. Its performance is, quite literally, measured by its wearers every day of their lives. The company therefore has a long history of innovation and research and development, and a reassuring habit of being first. For example, back in 1884, it applied to the United States Patent Office for a patent covering its ‘Tourbillon under three gold Bridges’ movement. In 1966, it developed the first high-frequency movement operating at 36,000 vibrations/hour. In the early 1970s, it launched the first quartz crystal vibrating at 32,768 Hertz, and set a standard that is now adopted by the vast majority of manufacturers. Indeed, the brand has registered nearly 80 patents in the field of watchmaking over the years.

The Gent magazine // flanagans barber shop

Flanagans recaptures the ambience of that great male bastion: the barber’s shop. The concept was as simple as it was brilliant: to combine the standards and creativity of the great unisex hair salons, with the timehonoured culture of the British barber’s shop.

Flanagans Gent’s Hairdressers located in the North West

The result: Flanagan’s.

Manchester: 0161 834 0043

It was created by Terence Tierney, managing director of Terence Paul hairdressing, who wanted to create something relevant for Manchester’s ‘new men’. His expanding Flanagan’s chain suggests he understands them perfectly. The Flanagans story began in Didsbury village, with Terry bringing in Chris Mullen. Within months, the new gents hairdressing concept required five staff to help meet demand and their strict ‘no appointments’ policy.

of the UK.

Didsbury: 0161 448 7400 Altrincham: 0161 928 5858 Wilmslow: 01625 528852

Then came Flanagans Wilmslow, which quickly established itself as a haven for style-conscious Premiership footballers and celebrities from music, television and film. Flanagans Altrincham followed in 2007, and then came a Manchester City-centre Flanagans in 2009 to keep ‘City Gents’ looking trim and sharp. Part of the secret of Flanagans’ success is that they keep their skills as sharp as their scissors; they have a rigorous training and development programme for their stylists at the Terence Paul Hairdressing Academy. The above commission was painted for a client who owns a Jensen Interceptor. The child kneeling is his son and the dog on the right is Gromit, the family pet.

‘Jack’ was painted for a surprise 21st Birthday gift. Jacks first love is his guitar and so both this and reference to his favourite bands appear in this contemporary piece.

The Gent magazine // vermilion art gallery

Many people find art galleries a little scary - and the idea of actually commissioning a work of art seems completely out of reach. If you’re one of them, The Gent warmly recommends you meet Vermilion. In this artist-owned gallery, James Blinkhorn has committed many special commissions to canvas that will be treasured for a lifetime. The process starts with an informal meeting where you and James chat through your ideas. He will give you as much or as little guidance as you need, including all the important details and possibilities of content, colour, style and size. This is then followed by a preliminary sketch for you to approve, as this work of art develops as a

collaboration between the two of you. Once you are completely happy, the painting can begin. ‘Wash Day Blues’ (opposite, top right) was a surprise 50th birthday present. The lucky recipient’s wife wanted the painting to include her husband as a young boy with his brothers, and reference to his favourite Manchester City player. The end result shows the three boys, with the legendary Colin Bell’s shirt hanging on the line. The painting was so popular they had to publish limited edition prints for his brothers. (Indeed, Vermilion has seen grown men brought to tears at an unveiling.) Do you know someone who would love their very own, very personal work of art? If so, you’ve just found the artist to paint it.

James Blinkhorn In addition to creating the Vermilion boutique art gallery in Knutsford, James is one of the region’s foremost artists. His talent was spotted at an early age: even as a schoolboy he painted commissions for teachers. He went on to study under the guidance of former Royal Academy of Art lecturer, Bill Clark, before forming an illustration agency with clients such as Coca-Cola, Disney and Siemens. He later joined a leading publishing house where his powerful, ultra stylish ‘New York’ and ‘Ferrari’ compositions won him a unique place in the contemporary art market.

of quickening your pulse ‘Imagine If’ is a new company with a mission to amaze and delight. Imagine holding in your hand something completely original, authentic and filled with the kind of memories that only legends inspire. And now imagine a whole gallery of these compelling items: signed memorabilia that, by its very nature, is unique. It’s as close as Alderley Edge, where exprofessional tennis player Ian Flanagan is curating the most remarkable collection. Just one example is a jaw-dropping James Bond piece: a framed blackjack table, not only signed by six Bonds

(Sean Connery, Sir Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton and also Halle Berry) but also by the man who started it all, Sir Ian Fleming. Equally unmissable: an original studio contract signed by Marilyn Monroe, beautifully framed and surrounded by images of the legend herself. The Gent magazine // Jaguar F-Type

You know what comes after E The F-Type Jaguar: the new pure-bred British sports car is to be unleashed next spring. The Gent takes a look.

‘Heritage’ is a word much bandied-about when it comes to cars and car marques. In the case of Jaguar, it is an asset this particular manufacturer can claim to possess in abundance. They brought you the ‘E’ type, a car that would take its place in any sports car hall of fame, anywhere. And it was the product of long experience: when Jaguar first started as a sports car company, Porsche, Lamborghini and Ferrari didn’t even exist. So Jaguar has firm foundations on which to build when it comes to evoking the true spirit of the sports car with the new ‘F’ type. The name means glamour, pulse-racing performance, technology and that spirit that marries ‘British’ and ‘sports car’ so beautifully together. Their new baby, due on of the roads next spring, will not disappoint. The F-type is a proper twoseat sports car, with aluminium construction, a

TWENTY two //

battery of technology and mighty performance delivered by V6 and V8 engines. And it is set to take on all-comers, including other frontengined, rear-drive roadsters such as the SLK and BMW’s Z4. If you had to judge a car on appearances alone, the F-Type is magnificent. Punchy, purposeful, powerful rear haunches - this is a car that makes its intentions plain. Its parentage also comes through loud and clear: from the squared off mouth evoking the design styling of its XF and XJ grilles, to the sumptuous leather interior. The V6 cars have twin central exhausts, while the V8 gets the full quadpipe treatment. The dashboard greets you with twin-analogue dials in classic sports car tradition, and the stick shift has been inspired by fighter planes. Courteously, there’s a grab handle for passengers if the action gets a little dramatic - which is highly likely.

Material gains

‘Central to the F-type’s design and ethos is its aluminium structure. This keeps weight down to 1597kg for the base V6 and 1665kg for the beefier V8. Weight distribution is also key, which is why as much of the mass as possible has been located between the wheels to boost agility and stability. It’s why you’ll also find the battery and washer bottle secreted away in the boot. All around, Jaguar’s engineers have scrutinized, analysed and shaved weight wherever they can: 2 kg came from the windscreen, 5 kg from the engine and bumper mounts, 24 kg from the seats… In turn, less weight means more fuel economy, so even the V6 beast can return just over 30 mpg. Power is sent to the rear wheels by a paddleoperated quickshift eight-speed automatic transmission. All the while you’re being ‘judged’ by the car as electronics monitor how it’s being driven; 25 different transmission programmes then make sure the drivetrain works as one with your every (almost) whim.

Performance: More F1 than F

The F-Type is an out and out performance car. Choose the basic F-type (£58,500) and you’re in command of a 336 bhp supercharged V6, which will propel you from 0-62 mph in just 5.3 seconds. Top speed: 161 mph. Or opt for the 375bhp V6 S (£67,500) and the sprint passes in 4.9sec on your way to a top speed of 171 mph. Or take things to the max with the eight-cylinder S (£79,950). With 489 bhp at your disposal, the 62 mph trip is accomplished in a trifling 4.3 seconds. Top speed: 186mph. Jaguar’s dynamics expert Mike Cross comments: “We’ve worked hard to make sure responses to steering, throttle and brakes are absolutely immediate, a task made far easier by the F-type’s rigid aluminium structure. It’s precise and exciting, and it sounds fantastic!” As you will hear for yourself, just a few months from now.

Indeed, the F-type will also be the most configurable Jaguar ever. You’ll be able to tweak individual steering, throttle, transmission and stability control thresholds, and suspension settings, with an adaptive dynamics system.

the Gadget Show girl answers a few Q&As from The Gent

POLLYANNA WOODWARD

The Gent magazine // pollyanna Woodward

Q A

hat do you enjoy most about the W Gadget Show?

I love almost every aspect of the show but there are 3 really key points that make it an incredible experience. The first is my co-host Jason. He is one of the funniest, most gregarious and smart people I know and I learn constantly from him. The technology is the second thing. I get to test consumer tech in exciting and extreme ways as well as the more sedate, but also seeing technology that is being established and worked on without mass knowledge... laying eyes on future technology. And thirdly it has to be the travelling. I have been to some unfamiliar, strange, amazing, unexpected places that have really broadened my knowledge of other countries and cultures and given me a bigger appreciation for the world around me. twenty four //

Q A

hat is the most expensive gadget for W men you have come across?

There are so many. I guess we could easily start talking Ferraris and Wally Yachts at this point, but consumer gadgets... home entertainment pods, fully immersive gaming pods... let’s just say anything that seems to be self contained comes with a price tag... But then again let’s talk about sound systems… The list is pretty endless when it comes to most gadgets.

Q A

What is your favourite gadget for men that you have come across?

here have been fun Wenger Pocket Knives, T 29ers, a great wine aerator we tested called the Venturi Deluxe… something called “little printer” that gives you a tiny print out of your daily news… and there’s an uber cool Garmin sat nav (nuvi 3590). That is one sexy looking bit of tech. Well, as sexy as sat nav gets.

Q A

What is the most interesting country you have visited with the Gadget Show?

he biggest culture shock was Japan. It was T an assault on the senses, and a place I never quite got used to. One other place I thought was interesting was Iceland. It’s quite a quirky place and had a great vibe. I’d love to go back and visit the Blue Lagoon.

Q A

What gadget do you think will break through in 2013?

ell 4G is on its way and it’s about time - we W are quite behind on that front. Both Japan and the USA have 4G at high speeds. We should also see the PS4 and XBOX 720 making an appearance by the end of 2013, a year which I think will be a lot about gaming. 3D will continue to grow through devices and get more immersive, and as always keep your eyes peeled for next gen smartphones and tablets...

Q A Q A

gadget you cannot A live without? My smartphone…it is literally my lifeline, my entertainment... EVERYTHING.

The future of gaming: games console or tablet?

Gaming will became more body motion controlled like the Kinect and our devices will all talk to one another. So eventually the games console will no longer be necessary - we’ll be able to game on all the devices we already own, TVs with cameras, phones, tablets... We already do a lot of it now, so it’s only a matter of time.

Q A

Are you an Apple or Android user?

Both.... although my newest handset is the iPhone 5. It’s ok and a nice upgrade from my 4, but a little lacklustre for what we’ve come to expect from Apple. That’s why I like to use Android too. I believe there are many handsets that are now all on par with the iPhones and if I’m honest actually offer more features and functions!

Q A

What car are you driving at present and what is your dream car?

I have a Mini countryman. I had to go for the petrol All 4 version, so it has a little bit of poke and grunt. My dream car... I have a real lust for cars, especially performance cars. I love the BMW M5 - not the newest model but the previous one. The Ferrari Enzo is stunning, and the KTM Crossbow R is the most fun, exhilarating car I’ve had the opportunity to drive. I wouldn’t say no to a Pagani Zonda either!

Q A

Favourite holiday destination to get away from all of this technology?

Holiday? What’s one of those?! I don’t really do holidays as such. However I recently visited the US Virgin Islands and it was paradise perfect: golden sand, clear blue sea, and few people around. My other top holiday destinations are NYC and Phoenix AZ. I love to be active and cycle, golf, mountain climb, workout, shop, eat out, jet ski and sightsee.

Q

What are you reading at present? And is it on paper or is that definitely the past for you?

A

I want Jason Cronin’s “The Twelve”. The last books I read were the “50 Shades” trilogy which I did actually read in paper form. I love e-readers and tablets but there’s something about having a paperback I just really love.

Q A

What is your favourite food?

I love sweet things. My Achilles heel is pick ‘n’ mix - I’m a little sugar fiend... and I can’t go by a Fro Yo place without going in, which isn’t great as I spend a lot of time in the States and they’re on every corner! For savoury I have a Chinese restaurant near me where the shredded smoked chicken is off the charts...

Devon Tread 1 Watch Belting good time

Unlike any other watch you’ve seen, this mechanical masterpiece uses 4 compact microstep motors to power a series of exposed glass-nylon belts that adjust the time and date. Mesmerising? It’s like staring into a modern art installation of interwoven, perpetually moving conveyor belts. The fact that it tells the time is almost incidental. The innovation doesn’t stop with the Tread 1’s patented belt design; an optical recognition system ‘knows’ every belt position at all times. What’s more, the crystal shield encasing its phenomenally accurate movement is made from scratch-resistant bullet-proof polycarbonate, and most of its internal parts are produced by suppliers to the aerospace industry. Despite being powered by a rechargeable cell that runs for up to two weeks on a single charge, the Tread 1 is far too cool for old-school charging cables. For this reason its luxe box is outfitted with wireless recharging technology.

Sadly this jaw-droppingly cool car won’t blast you back to the future when it hits 88mph, and it doesn’t even feature a Flux Capacitor. But at least the Electric DeLorean’s full leather-look interior is suitably minimalist with a built-in GPS display so you can find the Twin Pines Mall. Beloved by audio connoisseurs, The Gent discovers a niche high-technology brand that may not - ironically - have reached your ears. It can be a mixed blessing, living with perfection. Musicians with perfect pitch can be driven halfcrazy by an instrument that’s out of tune to even the tiniest degree. Similarly, there are those who know the full potential of what technology can deliver, and twenty eight //

simply cannot tolerate anything less. We suspect that two people ‘cursed’ with such standards are Bob Stuart and Allen Boothroyd. Bob first: he studied Psychoacoustics, Electronic Engineering and Management at Imperial College, London. Overlay this with a love of music and it was clear he was destined to forge a life using the former to enhance the latter, by specialising in audio design. This passion for music led his path to cross with Allen Boothroyd, who trained as a mechanical engineer and then went on to study industrial design at the Royal College of Art.

The result, born out of a real desire to hear music in all its glory, was a new company called Meridian. The venture was formed in 1977 and, today, Bob still heads all technological developments while Allen leads the design team. Meridian is an example of British enterprise at its best. Today, the company makes an array of digital media products such as CD players, surround sound systems, video technology and in-wall speakers.

Meridian

Are your ears ready for such refinement?

Uncompromised standards have led to some of the most highly-praised audio equipment in the world. It is also heartening that while most consumer electronics come to Britain by the container load, Meridian equipment is made in small numbers, in the UK - and much of it by hand. For example, its loudspeaker cabinets are hand-made using layers of carefullychosen woods, interleaved with aluminium (a special combination they call ‘Meridium’). Many electronic components are also still inserted and soldered by hand.

The performance and technology of those components have led to the British Design Council Award for Outstanding British Products an unbeaten three times. Meridian is also designer of choice for one of the more acoustically unfriendly environments: the car. The company has a long history of purposedesigning in-car entertainment, most recently for another British success story: the Range Rover Evoque. If you’re a fortunate owner of this breakthrough SUV you can choose between two purpose designed Meridian sound systems: a 11-speaker, 12-channel, 380-watt system with

a special dual-channel subwoofer; or a mighty 825 watt surround sound system featuring 15 amplifier channels driving 17 loudspeakers. Just resist the urge to close your eyes as you listen to its sumptuous, all-enveloping sound. The Gent magazine // Susie wolff

Hungry like the WOLFF She abandoned her university degree course for it. Now she’s knocking hard on its door. Will we soon see Susie Wolff on the F1 grid?

So much so that university couldn’t compete? I’m afraid not! I went to Edinburgh University to study international business, but after two years I gave it up to follow my dream.

Susie, you may not have race car fuel in your veins, but it’s never far from your nostrils… That’s true enough. I’ve just stepped down after seven fantastic seasons, competing in the DTM touring car series for Mercedes Benz…

So what got you noticed in the male dominated world of motor racing? The Young Driver of the Year award is a very prestigious award in Great Britain and I was the first ever female to make the final six. That got me noticed by Mercedes Benz and led to joining their German touring car (DTM) program as a factory driver.

And in April 2012, you embarked on new role in F1? Yes, I was proud and excited to be appointed a development driver for Williams F1. I’m part of the team working closely with the engineers both in the simulator and out on the track. It’s exciting because this is not just a quick 1 year deal. It’s a proper chance to really show what I can do.

Do you think you were born to race machines? My dad had his own motorcycle dealership and met my mum when she wanted to buy her first bike. And early on in our lives my brother and I were introduced to karting. And that led to a defining day at Donington? That’s right, the engineer who ran me in karts took me to Donington to see Formula 3. And that day the winner was a very young J. Button. It made me realise I had found where I wanted to be.

And now you’re in F1. How is that different? The physicality is massively different. You’re driving at up to 280km/h, pulling big G-forces when you brake and corner at high speed. That’s why I do a lot of back and stomach

exercises, and you need strong legs as well. But I also have a big advantage over the guys because I weigh 20-30 kg less than they do.”

Do you have any role models? My mother and grandmother. My mother’s very supportive, although she never watches the start of my races because that’s when big accidents can happen. As for my grandmother, she was incredibly strong. When my grandfather was 39, he ended up paralysed from the waist down in a diving accident. She cared for him without any outside help until she died last year. She never complained. She was never negative. She devoted herself to him and I think she had an incredible strength. And do you have the strength to force open the door into F1? The dream is F1. I’m on that path, part of Williams, and that’s a dream come true. Now I’m pushing hard to see where the dream goes. What has been your guiding principle? Even if there aren’t many people believing in you, don’t give up. Keep striving for your goals. In 2005, I had to miss some races because I broke my ankle and Renault dropped me at the last minute. I rang my Dad, wondering what I was going to do. The moment I put the phone down it rang again. One week later I was signing a contract with Mercedes Benz. And away from the track, how do you relax? I go out for dinner with my husband. I’m not a great cook, so the idea of spending an hour making dinner, 10 minutes eating it and then another hour clearing it all up doesn’t appeal to me!”

And does being female make you race with a point to prove? No, I race because I love racing, although I do realise I can have a positive influence on the way women are seen in this sport. But I still have a way to go before I can say I did something special in a man’s world. thirty five //

The Gent magazine // Les crayeres

The Domaine Les Crayeres 20 rooms, 7 hectares, 5 stars

The finest champagnes have something in common: they have lingered over time in ancient chalk quarries or pits called ‘crayères’.

Right down to Hermes bathroom products and the fluffiest towels, the ethos here is simple: find the best of everything.

Above these caverns, in the champagne heartland of Reims, lies Le Domaine Les Crayères. It is a hotel and estate for which 5 stars could have been invented. And, lying just a couple of hours from Calais, it positively begs to be explored and enjoyed.

Downstairs, the La Rotonde bar gives breathtaking views of the grounds and, in a clear night, the sparkle of fizz in your glass complements the stars in the sky.

Set in seven hectares of splendid grounds, this is a temple to elegance, good taste, and the art de vivre; that happy state where fine hospitality, exquisite surroundings and beautiful food come together with unforgettable results. Originally built in the early 20th century, interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon’s work is an essay in sophistication, delicacy and subtlety. The suites are classically furnished, with silks, velvets and gold leaf evoking splendour in the classic style. The suites on the top floor have their own stone balconies overlooking the classical topiary gardens and the parkland.

In the gourmet Le Parc restaurant, Philippe Mille derives his inspiration from the seasons, giving epic life to natural flavours. Or, if a more easy-going convivial mood takes you, the Brasserie Le Jardin brings together playful dishes, some 20 wines by the glass and a modern, architectural ambience inspired by the great city of Reims. Le Domaine is a member of Relais & Châteaux and of Les Grandes Tables du Monde. So if you’re looking for a weekend that fizzes with style, champagne territory is where you will find it. The Gent magazine // Butley Hall

Compromise? Not known at this address Butley Hall is a remarkable opportunity to take up residence in a very fine country house. Compromising 7 luxury 3 bed apartments and 3 luxury 3 bed townhouses in the heart of Prestbury Village.

The Gent magazine // butley hall

Butley Hall can be found in the Domesday Book.

Perfectly positioned

And so to the grounds

The original Butley Manor, which is believed to have stood on the site of the Hall, can be traced back to 1070 when William the Conqueror gave Chester to his nephew, one Hugh Lupus. In those turbulent times, Lupus’s son then ousted the Manor’s owner.

Very seldom in property do two crucial factors come together so perfectly: a magnificent residence in a classic English hall, and the North-West’s most enviable location Prestbury in Cheshire.

What is a fine country hall without an English country garden? At Butley Hall, the care and flair which will grace the interior is very much mirrored outside. Indeed, one of the region’s foremost award-winning landscape architects has been engaged to ensure the magic continues outside as well as in.

Down the years, the Manor was largely held by two families. The Pigotts owned it for some 400 years, before the Leghs acquired the estate, and ultimately the Hall, in 1629. Their purchase included 24 dwellings, a water mill, 500 acres of arable land, 500 acres of pasture - a pair of gloves and a lance. Many years later the Hall became the home of the sitting MP William Brocklehurst, and at one time it was a girls’ school. Ten fortunate purchasers will join its history at an exciting time, as its status as a very fine residence is recaptured once more.

Butley Hall encompasses both, beautifully. This highly sympathetic restoration of a classic Grade II country hall retains many of the original features, such as its staircase with over-sized balusters, carved wall panelling and a large and ornate original fireplace in the ‘Lockmead’ apartment. The developers Edengate Bespoke Homes are to make every use of existing materials and natural surfaces, while complementing them with leading edge technology, energy efficiency and security. This grand design will comprise seven highly prestigious apartments, together with three elegant townhouses. No two properties are the same and each has been designed to take full advantage of the grand features of this Grade II listed property. Importantly, each residence will also enjoy qualities not associated with a classic English hall: state of the art insulation, cutting edge energy efficiency, a completely renewed structure and every technological comfort.

The townhouses will boast a number of exterior assets. In addition to a charming front garden, a rear balcony will give commanding views over the Bollin Valley. There is also a further elevated area, laid with the finest quality decking and perfect for guest entertaining and barbecues. And for a little quiet contemplation, the townhouses also have an oasis of calm: a special ‘secret garden’ (accessed from the decked area), with a small level lawn area. The apartments will feature either a balcony or a spacious terrace area perfect for al fresco dining and with breathtaking views of the valley. The ground floor properties will enjoy their own beautifully landscaped garden, complete with a lawned area and creative colourful planting. You shall go to the ball

The Gent magazine // The Event Co

Left brain, right brain: successful party creation demands both extraordinary creativity and a forensic eye for detail. Here, Dianne Lynn of The Event Co, recalls how she created a joint 40th birthday that will never be forgotten.

“Could there be a better job than mine? Being trusted with the task of bringing explosive creativity and theatrical glamour to a landmark birthday? I met my clients at a wedding I had organised. They loved the Phantom of the Opera and wanted a masquerade ball – so for the next 12 months we set about creating this party in meticulous detail. First off: scene-setting ‘save the date’ cards were sent out as a single dance card, followed by a bejewelled Venetian mask in a gold padded envelope with the invitation on gold dance cards attached to one side by 3 separate ribbons. The house gave us the perfect setting: a long torch-lit drive, passing over a moat where haze machines blew a low mist over the water. As guests approached, they were greeted by comical flunkies creating mayhem, stilt walkers, jesters and fire eaters. Into the marquee, you were greeted by luxurious floor length purple silk taffeta drapes, and a raised floor area divided from the dining area by a stone balustrade adorned with twinkling candles and magnificent floral arrangements. forty two //

The tables were dressed in minute detail with crystal and gold candelabra, feathered masks, scented flowers, embossed silk taffeta table linen, gold charger plates, mother of pearl cutlery, gold embossed crystal glasses, and napkins finished with a gold napkin ring and tied with the dance card place setting. And naturally there was food to match: from tempura prawns served from large martini glasses filled with dry ice tumbling over the sides, to tiny boccocini cut in the shapes of hearts speared by a pipette of gazpacho… And then the main course: suckling pigs, borne aloft by 8 masked troubadours and carved for guests at each of the six long tables. And so to the highlight of the evening: a 30 minute show, lavishly staged with dancers entering in blackness to the music from The Omen with full length hooded capes, their faces lit by lanterns. Later came The Phantom and an aerialist (fresh from the London Olympics), and dramatic hooded figures who heralded the finale of the show by throwing away their cloaks and bursting into Riverdance. Why? Because one of the couple and many friends and relatives were Irish. As you can imagine, that ignited the party and packed the dance floor, and the music then pumped until 3.00am”

The Roebuck Welcome to

The Gent discovers a gem of a country pub near Knutsford There is a fine art to creating the perfect country pub. It needs wonderful food and a degree of formality that makes it the equal of the best restaurants. But it must also have all the hallmarks of the sociable, relaxed and fun pub tradition that is unique in Britain. Manchester Restaurateur Chris Hume has walked this tightrope with the greatest of skill. The Roebuck in Mobberley sits between Knutsford and Alderley Edge, and boasts fine Grade II listed architecture, a newly refurbished restaurant and a welcoming mix of wood, leather and plump upholstery. There is a relaxed dining and drinking area, a picturesque outdoor three tiered garden and, upstairs, a 60-cover dining room.

And if it’s good food and drink you’re after - just take a seat. Locally sourced ingredients, in both traditional and contemporary guises, take pride of place on chef Andy Chadderton’s new menu. At The Roebuck, you’re in meat heaven. There are 28-day-aged steaks, local game and fresh organic farmhouse chicken cooked to perfection on a rotisserie. In keeping with its local ethos, you can also call up foaming pints of local guest ales from Knutsford, Macclesfield and Congleton. The extensive wine list has a wide selection of new and old world wines, including a dozen carefully chosen from Burgundy and Bordeaux to complement the à la carte menu. Chris comments:

“We want to broadcast these fabulous wines rather than cellar them, so have priced them very invitingly.” The Roebuck is also creating a Steak Club, echoing an old 18th century London tradition where ravenous steak lovers would come together to celebrate this heavenly cut of beef. In the Roebuck’s version the members are (naturally) known as ‘Bucks’, with 24 members assembling four times a year. Their toast and motto: “Ne fidos interamicus sit, qui dicta foras eliminet.” Which roughly translates as “what’s said at the Steak Club, stays at the Steak Club!” For reservations please call: 01565 873322 www.the-roebuck.com

Stress,

tension, aches

The Beauty Lounge prescription. At Beauty Lounge at the Radisson Blu, they have a range of treatments – specially created for men. Why should women get all the care, attention and indulgence? At Beauty Lounge, we’ve created special treatments specifically with men in mind. Highly qualified therapists, the latest male skincare and body treatments, luxurious treatment rooms – it all comes together beautifully at Beauty Lounge.

Welcome to the Male Grooming Zone Two of our most popular services for men at Beauty Lounge are male skincare, and massage. Guinot Très Homme Hydradermie facial Men’s skin has to face a number of challenges, and is quite different from women’s. Men have smaller sebaceous glands, requiring a different skincare formulation of active ingredients for optimum absorption. The presence of testosterone also generates a larger amount of sebaceous secretions, making the skin oilier and

more subject to acne and blemishes. Also, daily shaving destroys the hydrolipidic film (causing skin to lose its natural protective barrier), as well as causing nicks and razor burn. This can often make your skin sensitized, dehydrated and irritated. These special needs have been answered by French skincare house Guinot. They created Très Homme expressly to address the needs and priorities for men’s skincare. Très Homme products therefore contain active ingredients that: • Cleanse (without dehydrating) • Soothe (after shaving) • Exfoliate (to eliminate impurities and excess oil, and help prevent in-grown hairs) • Moisturise (without leaving an oily residue) • Firm and rejuvenate. The Stress Buster For a luxurious antidote to the stress of everyday life, ask for a Stress Buster. This total body treatment takes a holistic approach: a deep full body aromatherapy and scalp massage is followed by a relaxing facial, using oils to suit your individual requirements.

Massage At Beauty Lounge, we use the Swedish massage technique to focus on the precise areas you need. Just tell us where you’re tense; choose a treatment duration; and let us work our magic - on the neck, back, shoulders, full body, legs and feet, head and face… You can also choose: • Stress-a-way: A calming aromatherapy blend that offers a respite from daily tension. • Refresh: An uplifting aromatherapy blend to revitalise the body and elevate the senses. • Relaxation: A deeply soothing aromatherapy blend to comfort the mind, body and soul. • Muscle melt: A blend of warming rosemary, juniper and thyme to ease away tired, aching muscles. You’ll find the Beauty Lounge at the Radisson Blu Hotel Manchester Airport, where we welcome both guests and non-residents. The Gent magazine // Robert keyte silks

Robert Keyte Pure silk, sheer joy

As Northamptonshire is to shoe making and Staffordshire is to potteries, so the history of Macclesfield is inextricably linked to silk. It was back in 1261 that King Edward I granted the borough a Royal Charter, and the very earliest products from the town were silk thread and silk-covered buttons produced by local ‘home-workers’. But in 1755, the first silk mill was established; a seminal moment that forever changed the production of silk in Macclesfield. A growing number of mills in the area were soon producing an increasingly diverse range of silk clothing and accessories. Although many of those early mills are now gone, the town’s reputation in silk shines as brightly as ever. Macclesfield remains globally renowned for the production of high-quality silk and neckties. The association with the town still attracts legions of discerning customers who value silk that is unsurpassed in quality and steeped in history.

Robert Keyte: a family tradition

Robert Keyte’s family has been producing the highest quality men’s neckwear and accessories since 1936. Their portfolio features the Classical English look (also known as ‘Macclesfield Neats’) as well as with fully contemporary designs. Yet all share the same hallmarks of traditional quality and craftsmanship.

forty eight //

Their Macclesfield mill is probably the only remaining producer of ‘Real Ancient Madders’ prints, and is one of the few surviving printers capable of the classic dye and discharge method of printing. As for their weaves, they are Jacquard-woven using exquisite silk thread from China. In the traditional de-gumming of the thread, some weight can be lost and many competitors compensate for this by adding mineral salts. Not so at Robert Keyte, where every product is genuinely 100% pure silk. Both printed and woven silk fabrics are produced in Macclesfield, with accessories then crafted entirely by hand in the picturesque village of Bodiam in East Sussex, overlooking the famous castle and the Rother Valley steam railway. In addition to a range of exquisite ties, Robert Keyte also offers a selection of elegant handkerchiefs again made from Macclesfield silk, with the same obsessive attention to detail. All Robert Keyte products are guaranteed to have been manufactured using only 100% Pure Silk, printed or woven in the Borough of Macclesfield, Cheshire, England. Customers can look forward to many years of pleasure from wearing any Robert Keyte accessory, with all the heritage, quality and craftsmanship that has defined the brand for generations.

A little face time with Gentry Can you get a really smooth close shave, and still be good to your skin? You can, with a little Gentry know-how. Your skin doesn’t much care for shaving. Shaving can over-exfoliate your skin, triggering high levels of visible irritation. It can also take away your skin’s natural moisture, leaving it scaly and cracked. So that’s a double whammy: it looks bad and hurts as well.

The Lather Then squeeze some shaving cream into the bowl and lather it up (alternatively, just use the palm of your hand). The cream will give you a close and comfortable shave as it softens and lifts the beard.

But now for the good news: it doesn’t have to be this way. Here’s the Gentry guide to getting a close yet comfortable shave.

The Shave Firstly, flip your shaving brush over your skin in an up and down motion to evenly distribute the lather. Next, taking a razor suitable for your skin type with a good weight and balance, warm it in hot water before and during the shave. This makes is sharper and avoids clogging.

Preparation First, dampen your face with warm water and then cleanse it with a face wash. (Always use warm or hot water as this softens the hairs and opens up the pores.) Then rinse off the face wash, this time using tepid water to close the pores again. Lubrication Use a pre-shave oil to lubricate your skin and give it a thin layer of protection against the blade. For best results, now squeeze a small amount of shave oil to rub into your face.

Glide your razor over your skin holding your skin taut with your free hand. For the closest possible shave go against the grain, but if you have sensitive skin go with the grain to avoid razor burn. Start at the sideburns and shave down on one side; then repeat on the other side of your face.

Do the hair over the top lip last; it’s thicker, and the longer the shaving cream has to soften the hairs, the better. Take extra care around the sensitive neck area to avoid skin inflammation, and in general don’t put too much pressure on the razor. After the shave Rinse any leftover cream away using warm water, then splash on cold water to close up the pores. Now for an important part of the ritual: moisturise. Pat (but don’t rub) your skin dry with a clean towel. Then use The Essentials Range Face Balm, tapping the skin all over to feel invigorated and fresh. And then splash on the aftershave? Actually no – never use alcohol-based products on your face as they dehydrate the skin and can cause infection. Instead, simply dab your favourite fragrance behind your ears.

SHAVING FACTS Did you know, a man shaves more than 20,000 times in his lifetime and 97% of men dislike shaving so it’s important to get it right!

Use the hottest water you can tolerate as the hot water causes the metal blades on your razor to expand so that the sharp edge gets a little sharper.

The Gent magazine // Resolution

Start a resolution It really is possible to achieve your correct healthy weight. Just give yourself the best chance of success. Picture the scene. It’s January 1st 2013. The new year beckons and suffice to say you’ve had an indulgent Christmas. And yet again a resolution pops into your head: this is the year I really will get a grip on my weight and my health. Only this time, it’s going to work, provided...

1: No crash diets

There is no complex science behind losing weight. It’s linked to what, and how much you eat, and what you’re doing with that energy you’re consuming. Put simply, if you eat 3000 calories, and only ‘burn’ 2000, your body stores the surplus in the form of fat. So the simple way is just to shrink those calories with a quick diet, right? Wrong. A crash diet will lose some fast pounds - but those pounds will come straight back on again when you stop. Often, crash dieting also means you’re not receiving the nutrients and vitamins your body needs.

fifty four //

2: Get real

Getting your weight down and your fitness up takes time. So set yourself some realistic longterm goals. In January, aiming for a healthy weight and size in time for beach in August is a good plan in a sensible time. Obsessing about a drinks party in three weeks isn’t. As we all know from experience, dramatic sudden dieting is the quickest way to put yourself off the whole idea. So is pounding on a treadmill for hours on your first day in the gym.

3: Eat carefully and regularly

In choosing a better regime, make sure you’re eating from all the main food groups to give yourself the vitamins and nutrients you need. At the same time, there are lots of ways to nail down those calories to sensible levels.

Choose water instead of fizzy drinks; buy semiskimmed milk; make your own sandwiches rather than buy fattier ones in store; cut out sugar in tea and coffee; put a little less on your plate. Also, stick to proper mealtimes, and that includes breakfast. Your body’s metabolism is built around it, and if you skip meals you’re also more likely to snack and graze.

4: Get moving

Everything you do burns calories and fat. And you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete: even a light daily 20-minute walk will be a positive move. The key is to do it briskly, so you get a bit warmer and your heart beats a little more quickly. Do something you enjoy - swimming, cycling, team sports, running - but whatever you do, just build on it gradually. Again, also get into good daily habits and you’ll find they become routine. Walk a short trip rather than reaching for the car keys; build a walk into outings; take stairs instead of lifts.

Sebastian Vettel and Infiniti present The Infiniti FX Vettel Edition.

Revealed: the World Champion’s dream road car. When you invite an F1 champion to design his perfect road car, you are surely creating yourself an engineering mountain.

On 22 November, Infiniti delighted 250 lucky guests as they unveiled the car in their brand new Stockport showroom.

Every day, these guys drive the most powerful and most advanced cars in the world. So let’s just say it takes a lot to impress them.

FX: inspired by Vettel While the Formula 1 World Champion was busy retaining his crown, the car he inspired was built in just six months.

But that’s exactly what Infiniti did; the luxury performance car marque teamed up with Sebastian Vettel to design and build his dream car. The result is rare in every sense. Not only has this engineering marvel delighted Vettel; there are only 50 in the world and 10 in right hand drive.

This 420PS, 300 km/h top speed powerhouse will launch you from 0-100km in just 5.6 seconds. Its aero package delivers a 30% improvement in the coefficient of lift (CI) and a 5% lower drag coefficient (Cd).

Vettel commented: “This is the first road car I have helped develop. The result is an Infiniti I am very proud to have my name on. It is all I hoped for: 300km/h, plenty of downforce – and I can still fit my mountain bike in the back!” If you too would like to check out Infiniti’s brand of luxury performance motoring, the good news is that it’s right on your doorstep. Hakkasan

Chinese cuisine, contemporary flavours.

Hakkasan: From London to Abu Dhabi You walk on water to reach the restaurant’s front door

The highway is strewn with casualties when it comes to new restaurants. Even in the era of celebrity chefs, and seemingly constant exposure on television, quite a number have crashed and burned. Not so Hakkasan, a concept launched onto the competitive London scene in 2001. It has gone on to enjoy a decade of hard-won success: they have been bestowed with numerous prestigious accolades from bodies such as Moët et Chandon, Timeout and The Tatler Restaurant Awards. The restaurant truly arrived when it gained its first Michelin star in 2003, and went to take its place in Guy Dimond’s ‘50 Best London Restaurants’, and Restaurant Magazine’s ‘50 Best Worldwide Restaurants’. The inspiration behind Hakkasan is London Head Chef, Tong Chee Hwee. Tong arrived direct from the Summer Pavilion, the famed Chinese restaurant at the Ritz Carlton in Singapore. He also kept his highly praised team together, with his Sous Chef and Master Dim Sum Chef boarding the plane to London with him. Sublime food demands equally creative surroundings, and Tong’s contemporary take on Chinese cuisine is complemented by the work of the much-courted interior designer Christian Laager. His credentials are impeccable: Christian designed the private homes of Karl Lagerfeld and Calvin Klein, as well as Valentino’s new HQ and New York’s Mercer Hotel. In a world of almost clichéd minimalism among leading Chinese restaurants, his concept was to ‘bring back the dragon’ and translate traditional Chinese motifs, such as lanterns and screens, into a contemporary language.

He created a 16-metre bar made of darkstained English oak to match the tables, screens and latticing. The dark wood contrasts with lighter tones of backlit blue glass that surround the perimeter of the restaurant. The Ling Ling area reincarnates the old school decadence of Chinoiserie, punctuated with black and gold traditionally drawn panels. And an extraordinary wall of sawn slate provides a dramatic backdrop for the nocturnal bar activity and the kitchen, fully visible to the diners, provides a sense of theatre. The design dream team was completed by leading lighting aesthetician Arnold Chan from Isometrix. Even the staff uniforms are haute couture, created by leading fashion designer Hussein Chalayan. Hakkasan Abu Dhabi In 2007, Hakkasan’s success was such that it merited an international stage. As a result, Hakkasan sold the majority of its shares to the Abu Dhabi investment group, Tasameem. In April 2009, Hakkasan opened in the Fontainebleau Resort Miami, gaining plaudits and media coverage across North America. Expansion plans included Asia, the Middle East and North America, and in April 2010 Hakkasan opened in Abu Dhabi. And it did so in one of the world’s most palatial settings: the landmark Emirates Palace. Comprising a restaurant, bar and lounge as well as four private dining rooms, the 16,000 sq ft. space is separated by carved wooden screens and latticing in an echo of the original London

flagship. Embroidered-finished furniture and marbled Chinese forms enrich the space, and the main dining area is crafted into a wooden, cage-like structure surrounded by stunning blue glass and back-lit by a stainless steel frame. The interior was created by long-time design partner Gilles & Boissier, based in Paris, taking the essence of the Hakkasan ethos and interpreting it for the multinational vibe of the United Arab Emirates. Hakkasan’s signature dishes (Peking duck with caviar, grilled Wagyu beef with king soy sauce…) are served alongside a set of new dishes created especially for an Emirati clientele. The restaurant is headed by chef Lee Kok Hua, who hails from the London flagship where he worked under head chef Tong Chee Hwee for five years. The entrance sets the tone: a private door in the west wing of the Emirates Palace Hotel takes you on a route where, almost literally, you walk on water to reach the restaurant’s front door. Inside, you are greeted by an aura of calm: dark wooden décor, which is hand-carved combining ancient Chinese and Arabian motifs, combines with gentle lighting and swatches of blue. For openers, there’s a delicious selection of cocktails and, a Hakkasan speciality, ‘mocktails’, straight from the impressive 15-metre bar. Just one of many possibilities: the Eden — a blend of black grapes, rose sugar, lychee juice, coconut cream and lime. Then the serious decisions start as the panoply of contemporary Chinese cuisine unfolds before you. And expect a respectful nod to the UAE, such as the fried and grilled dumplings with the subtle addition of dates. For more information on Hakkasan please visit: www.hakkasan.com
