Design is about making beautiful things work harmoniously. And that demands a multidisciplinary team to address every artistic, technical and physical aspect. So whether your project is a single room in a loft apartment, an entire country house, a boutique hotel or a yacht, the UBER Team has the collective artistic and technical skills to make it happen, seamlessly. The UBER Team’s award-winning individual companies are responsible for creating some of the finest residential environments around the world. It therefore made sense to bring these classleading enterprises together to support architects with a special turnkey solution that adds value to their projects. These teamed-up partnerships touch on all aspects of interior and exterior design. Our non-exclusive menu system means you can choose only the areas you need. But the more we’re involved, the greater the potential to compress timelines and make financial savings by engaging an existing and harmonious team. There are no ‘typical’ team members at UBER. Indeed, we’ve made a point of drawing talent from far and wide. They come from high-end residential design, retail and leisure, marine and even aviation industries. And many have won multiple awards in their specialist fields. You’ll find examples of their work throughout this magazine, (with the obvious exception of our support specialists such as data cablers and electricians, whose handiwork is, by design, invisible). The UBER Team promise you fresh perspectives, inquiring minds, and a healthy questioning of conventional wisdom. Let us surpass your expectations.

Welcome The legendary designer Charles Eames - mostly of the chair fame - said many great things. One quotation in particular strikes a chord with me: “The details are not the details. They make the design.” In other words, every detail is crucial. And in our work at UBER that means every door handle, light switch, fabric, floor tile or ceiling cove. It’s all important. In this issue, we show how we took this philosophy to a dream assignment: to restore a former Georgian vicarage and inject it with the qualities of a fine boutique hotel. We give you the winners of the restaurant and bar design awards and reveal our favourite place to stay in New York: the Crosby Street Hotel. We also explore the design prowess of the Rolls-Royce Wraith Coupé, introduce you to X-treme Chinese cuisine and celebrate another beautiful cinema room collaboration with team UBER’s Sensory International. Gloster show you some fabulous new outdoor furniture and we round up another Magnificent 7; our gallery of our latest favourite things. In every case, they show how the details matter. Whether you’re an UBER client or simply an interested reader, I hope you enjoy some wonderful work showcased on these pages.

Grade II listed Georgian vicarage in need of a total lifestyle injection. UBER couldn’t resist.

Coveting thy neighbour’s house

In our business we are fortunate enough to work with some wonderful ‘raw material’: beautiful architecture and spaces that we are asked to enhance and re-energise. One such project was a gorgeous Grade II listed Georgian vicarage in Cheshire. The client wanted us to extend the property and provide a complete turnkey service. Working closely with the client’s architect we contributed to a significant early success: gaining planning permission, in a conservation area, to increase the property’s footprint by a remarkable 150%. The objective then: to evolve this classic Georgian ‘box’ house, restoring it to its former glory whilst creating a fresh lifestyle proposition. UBER hand-picked contractors whom we know and trust, and can work to the exacting standards and level of detail that we

require. For this was a project where no stone would be left unturned to achieve an outcome we knew was possible. Over these eight pages Simon Evans, Managing Director of The Design Practice by UBER, gives his notes on a tour of the finished result. THE ENTRANCE HALL: “You’re greeted by an immediate surprise here, right at your feet. We had the idea of inlaying leather elements to the central area of an otherwise traditional stone floor. This quirky, playful contemporary attitude continues at ceiling level and an installation of almost ‘feathery’ lighting. We also carefully reinstated some of the original joinery in the wall panelling” THE DINING ROOM: “Now comes a change of pace: a solid wood herringbone pattern floor, contrasted with the softest of silk rugs.

The centrepiece is a breathtaking, a highly lacquered dining table which is completed with two-tone upholstered chairs in cream leather with striking backs in blue material complementing the artwork and embellished with mother of pearl handles. This imposing arrangement is set off with a rock crystal chandelier and matching wall lights which reflect beautifully in the silk wallpaper. To the feature arch on one wall we added what is called a ‘cold applied metal’ which gives a bronzed effect to a wall, giving a real juxtaposition of classical and contemporary style. This included a bespoke stingray-skin sideboard, completed with horse sculpture and flanking table lamps. The centre fireplace was then replaced in a Portland stone with a Christopher Guy mirror above to finish the room completely.”

7

THE POWDER ROOM: “No room is too small for the sense of drama that pervades this house. This is finished in super yacht style with floorto-ceiling walls in high gloss lacquer timber, with inlaid eglomisé antique mirroring all the way through and tall wall lights adorning a hammered metal basin.” THE STUDY: “This room is something of a temple to the art of bespoke joinery. The desk and all cabinetry are made in a special ‘fumed oak’, and we extended this finish to the windows, architraves and all the panelling. We’ve also had some fun: the desktop is inlaid with ultra-fine herringbone cross weave suede details, in the draw linings and even in the suede chairs that sit in front of the fire. And all the open display recesses are softly lit with diffused LED strips in the cabinetry.” BEDROOMS: “Up to the first floor, and here we introduce a kind of ‘boutique hotel’ ethos. We wanted to create an air of sumptuous comfort, punctuated throughout with design surprises. So for example you’re greeted by the amazing roof lantern over the hallway

uber-lifestyle.com // 0845 0773280

combined with a sculptural pendant light with bronzing and gilding to the inside. Each bathroom is individually designed, and we’ve sourced stone from the best quarries on a tone-on-tone colour palette. We also commissioned handmade bespoke cabinetry for the bedrooms, encompassing both wardrobe and dressing space. More discretely, the linen rooms and service cupboards have been located out of sight, away from the guest rooms.” THE MASTER SUITE: “A fine house demands a ‘statement suite’ and this one lives up to that aim. We have reinstated a magnificent Georgian fireplace and even opened up a very secret second dressing room, intriguingly accessed through an existing cabinet. A bespoke headboard with an LED surround gives a halo effect to this fully upholstered bedhead. We have unleashed ideas ranging from sculptured, artistic floor lamps to a silver snake leather chest of drawers. And yet this is just a taster of what’s to come when you meander past the console and ornate mirror, through the main dressing room of bespoke lacquered woods and contrasting leather inlays to enter the Master Ensuite Bathroom.

9

THE MASTER BATHROOM: “The bath has been dressed in silver metallic crocodile leather with a back drop to the bath of bookmatched and backlit Labrador quartz stone. This stands floor to ceiling with the taps and spouts mounted on the wall and out of the marble itself. The toilet cistern has been cunningly hidden behind the listed cupboards to bring function where there is character. The vanity unit has inlaid leather materials and has been shaped and sculpted to the room. A beautiful shower enclosure completes the room with body jets and a complete wellness experience.

Right down to the bordering detail - the tiling design was critical and laid with meticulous precision over weeks and months – ensuring an ensuite you don’t want to leave.” We continue the journey next issue… If you can’t wait to see Part II in our next issue, all the images are on our website www.thedesignpractice.com or scan the QR code

If it’s not wool, do you get sheepish? The days of ‘it has to be wool’ in a luxury carpet may be over With good reason, pure wool carpets have always been regarded as one of the most desirable. And we expect they always will. A wool carpet feels extravagantly soft and absorbs and retains colour superbly. Wool also keeps its new look for a long time, and will serve you well for years to come. However, in an era of rapid change, the world of carpets has new pretenders. Thanks to technology, these upstarts are coming to the market with genuine boasts of lifetime guarantees and remarkable stain-resistant properties. Even traditional nightmare invaders such as ketchup and red wine will not penetrate many of these new carpets. And since this resistance will never wash off or wear away, they will look like new for years to come. They’re also made from renewable sources, cause fewer emissions in their manufacture and,

uber-lifestyle.com // 0845 0773280

with no chemical treatments needed to make them stain resistant, they’re eco-friendly. And it gets better: they’re also impossibly soft and, being so durable, may just be the last carpet you ever buy. So if you’re looking to change your climate (and not the climate) you have more coverings, textures and options than ever before. Consider some of the newer wave of light blues, silvers and pale greens, as an alternative to ivories and creams. And while light colours make a room appear larger and brighter, dark colours can make it feel cosier, sensual and more intimate. Bear in mind also the host of solids and patterns, rugs and runners, and you have some deliciously difficult choices ahead of you. ALL FIRED UP Fired Earth puts a world of exquisite style (quite literally) at your feet.

Wherever you have a floor, Fired Earth has an idea. And whether you live in a classic cottage, a magnificent mansion or the funkiest of flats, the Sycamore Farm showroom near Knutsford is full of fabulous ideas. From timeless marbles, limestones and travertines to decorative porcelain flooring, crisp slate and sun-kissed terracotta, they have every kind of floor tile you could need. At prices starting from under £25 per square metre. Kitchen Floors If porcelain conjures up images of delicate china, you may be surprised that it can also be a hardwearing, low-maintenance flooring option for busy households. The Fired Earth range includes beautiful replica stones (such as Coast and Lombardia) that exhibit natural-looking variations in colour and texture and are perfect for traditional kitchens. Or there’s patterned porcelain that’s extremely resilient and

forgiving in a room which, let’s face it, will get more than its fair share of splashes and spills. Alternatively, explore Fired Earth’s very special new range of marbles and limestones in all their guises - from glacial and polished for contemporary kitchens to softly tumbled limestone for an earthier setting. Bathroom Floors A kitchen may be the hub of the home, but a tranquil haven of a bathroom may also be high on your priorities. Marble in bathrooms is enjoying a resurgence in popularity, and the Fired Earth Hamptons range is irresistibly tactile, sophisticated and yet surprisingly inexpensive. The collection includes everything from large format tiles to mosaics, skirtings and pencils, all in a range of finishes that can be mixed and matched so you can really get creative.

For a family bathroom, low-maintenance, slipresistant tiles may be a sensible route to go. But practicality needn’t mean any compromise on style. The Fired Earth range includes ingenious Arboreto porcelain planks which can be used in wet areas where real wood might warp. And there are decorative Abbey and Patisserie porcelain tiles that combine classic designs with innovative, hard-wearing materials. And don’t forget underfloor heating. It adds a luxurious cosiness as you step out of the bath or shower, and Fired Earth offers systems compatible with all their tile ranges.

Your bathroom: New ideas on tap Your bathroom can mean so much more than a just a room with a bath. Welcome to a new multifunctional living space.

How we behave in our homes is something of infinite interest to designers. Long ago, they figured out that a kitchen isn’t just a room in which to prepare food. We tend to collect there, talking, eating, watching, computing and making it the hub of the home. Similarly, bathrooms are evolving into much more than just a room in which to take a bath or shower, or to brush your teeth. Increasingly, they’re places in which to linger, recharge and take care of oneself. The bathroom as a living area Duravit and Sieger’s ‘2nd floor’ concept asks why do washing areas have to follow the familiar structures along the wall? With four drawers at the front and an illuminated shelf on the back, their washing area opens up completely new possibilities. Positioned as a stand-alone element at a 90° angle to the wall, it projects freely into the room. A matching

mirror solution, with mirrors suspended from the ceiling, allows for maximum flexibility. A 100 cm-wide tall cabinet with sliding mirror doors and interior lighting is another solution for breaking down familiar structures and enhancing the quality in this living space. The materials and surface finishes are key: highquality wood gives the bathroom a real warmth and personality. Your private spa: healthcare comes home A personal sauna at home has become a reality with Inipi by Eoos, with its compact dimensions of 120 x 120cm allowing ample space for one person. Or how about the St. Trop steam shower designed by Philippe Starck? With lower temperatures and up to 100% air humidity, it has a footprint of just one square metre and offers relaxing steam pleasure at the push of a button. It is also a fullyfledged shower for everyday use.

Alternatively, discover how regular steam baths activate the immune system, support muscular regeneration and stimulate the skin’s metabolism. Diverse functions, one relaxing solution Even in a single product, you can decide on a steam bath or shower and, at the same time, enjoy the beneficial effects of colours, scents and sounds. The Nahho flotation tub, designed by Eoos, combines the relaxed feeling of weightlessness with music and gentle, indirect lighting. Even your next loo could do much more than you think. SensoWash, again designed by the mercurial Philippe Starck, features a stainless steel spray arm with three shower types to perform the function of a bidet. Water temperature and volume can be individually adjusted. Feeling clean and fresh, the next stage is warm, drying air.

Your bathroom is a room with a future. Explore it and enjoy it.

If you need to ask the price... The new Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith Coupé

UBER seeks out the best - Rolls-Royce Wraith CoupĂŠ

You tinker at your peril with a marque such as Rolls-Royce. No two words encompass luxury, tradition and craftsmanship in the automotive world quite so consummately. the true art of the marque has been its ability to evolve.

31

The new Rolls-Royce Wraith CoupĂŠ honours those traditions and yet, under its exquisite surface, delivers one of the most technologically advanced cars on the road today. Now that is clever.

the new Rolls-royce wraith coupe

Just before we approach the car, consider the name. ‘Wraith’. It means ‘Ghost’, and its first apparition dates back to the halcyon days of the 1930’s. It will have graced stately homes and fashionable Mayfair restaurants; society parties and summer picnics at Ascot; Glyndebourne and Henley. The new Wraith evokes all of that sense of fine living, but with a thoroughly 2013 take. Indeed, this is the most powerful Rolls-Royce ever made. Its 624bhp, 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12 will

sweep you from 0-60mph in an effortless 4.4 seconds. Extraordinary, for a car built to be capacious rather than rapacious.

But of course this is also a car that is required to deliver the last word in luxurious interiors, and the new Wraith rises to the task beautifully.

Yet this is a true driver’s car. Its new suspension amplifies feedback discreetly, and its steering ‘weights up’ at speed. Even better, it boasts a Satellite Aided Transmission system; its eight-speed automatic gearbox is actually GPS-equipped to predict corners, motorway junctions and roundabouts – and, therefore, the gear you will need.

Its sumptuous signature leathers are reminiscent of a superyacht. Rear-hinged doors open to reveal a Ghost-inspired interior featuring new matt Canadel wood panelling. There’s also the option of Starlight headlining, comprising 1,340 handwoven fibre optic lights. And so to the price. The Wraith can be yours for around £220,000, with the first cars expected at the end of this year.

INTRUDER ALARMS The greatest worry for most of us is the thought of someone getting into our home, particularly at night. Sensory Secure offers a variety of proven technologies, designed and applied through long experience to your individual needs.

CCTV Once just for businesses, CCTV is now part of the front-line defence of a family home. It can be used as a visible deterrent, or sensitively installed in order to be unobtrusive.

One step better than a basic alarm or CCTV is a monitored system. At any time, day or night, if your alarm or CCTV is activated, the relevant emergency services can be automatically alerted. Where security is paramount, the latest generation of infra-red technology means that 24 hour surveillance is now possible and biometric access control can ensure that only verified family members or staff can gain entry to private areas.

REFURBISHMENT AND MAINTENANCE Sensory can take over your existing system, advise on any necessary upgrades and continue to test and maintain it. Naturally, we also support our own new installations with full parts and labour warranties, and maintenance programmes to safeguard your security for years to come.

FREE CONSULTATION Sensory is delighted to visit your home, appraise your current system and advise on any improvements you might need. This costs you nothing, and there is no obligation.

For more information on Sensory Secure and a complimentary risk assessment, please call 01625 505720. www.sensorysecure.com

GREEN GOLD! Businesses, homeowners and savvy investors are now looking to Renewable Energy for the kind of returns that stocks and shares once were. We wanted to find out more about the ‘Green gold-rush’ When it comes to savings and investments, things have certainly changed for the worse in recent years. Interest from Bank and Building Society accounts are hardly worth talking about, and returns from ISA’s are not much better. And as for stocks and shares.....well, if you’re brave enough!! With no end in sight to the current low interest rates, Investors are now looking further afield for that elusive Return-On-Investment. “A few years ago people would never have put the words ‘Renewable Energy’ and ‘Investment’ in the same sentence”, says David Hunt of Renewable Solutions. “There has always been a massive interest in being self-sufficient and making your own energy, and businesses are now under great pressure to show green credentials, but the returns on the capital outlay were rarely exciting!” All of this changed when the Government launched the Feed-InTariff (FIT) and Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). “Owners of Solar installations, Biomass Boilers, Wind Turbines and Heat Pumps are now making returns as high as 15%. Indeed, we have heard cases of businesses who are achieving 20-25% returns on Biomass Boiler installations!”

The schemes are legislated and cannot be reversed or withdrawn. They run for 20 years, during which time the system owner is paid to generate electricity or heat in an environmentally friendly way. The returns, which are also index-linked, are paid even if all the electricity or heat is used by the owner. “It is an absolute no-brainer” notes David. “You are paid to make energy that you would otherwise need to buy in from a utility company”. Renewable Solutions are award-winning experts in the Green Energy market, having spent the last eight years advising businesses and investors on how to offset growing energy costs, reap high returns and re-brand their businesses as ‘energy-ethical’. Many businesses have to prove a level of environmental or low-carbon activity in order to be used in supply -chains or win tenders. Being a polluter is certainly frowned upon now in business. The company are accredited to specify and design any size and type of renewable installation. They, themselves, hold ISO9001, ISO4001 and are ConstructionLine Registered.

The Company offer a number of purchasing solutions: Businesses with capital to invest can do so, and benefit from immediate tariff returns and various tax breaks. Lease Purchase arrangements allow the business to immediately benefit from tariff income and get tax relief on lease payments. Installation ownership passes to the business at the end of the lease. The company can also advise on free installations. These are funded (often by the city) and allow the business to benefit from reduced energy bills, while the fund retains the tariff to offset the installation cost. Contact David Hunt, Commercial Manager and his team in confidence to discuss the options available to your business or property.

X-treme Chinese: your table awaits

Bo London has erupted onto the London scene with a brand of Chinese cuisine never before seen in the capital. The uber restaurant critique Kevin snook reserves a table. BO LONDON

Could there be another Heston Blumenthal? The smart money, and the gastronomic elite, says you’d have to go a long way to find one. So how about China? Or, more conveniently, the stately environs of Mayfair in London. Here you will find Alvin Leung: British born, of Chinese descent, and with an imagination from another planet entirely. Consider, for example, his description of his approach to his work. He says: “I want to explore the borders between being a genius and being an idiot. Like having the diner on the end of a bungee rope; if the rope is too short then there’s no thrills; if it’s too long then his head is smashed in.” It seems, however, that there are many thrill-seeking diners out there, more than eager to attach themselves to this precarious rope. The home of this bungee gastronomy is his new Bo London restaurant, located in Mill Street, Mayfair. Entering the cut-throat London restaurant scene takes nerve, verve and exceptional ability. The latter he has in abundance: Alvin’s London venture follows his triumphant Bo Innovation restaurant in Hong Kong. There, he has garnered two coveted Michelin stars, with his entirely fresh take on contemporary Chinese cuisine. Now it’s London’s turn, where Alvin has arrived with a wife, daughter, 16 dogs, a TV show - and his restaurant which, the first signs suggest, is exciting indeed.

So what can you expect? Take your seat in Bo London’s unpretentious space, and start by giving your taste buds an early work out with Alvin’s signature cocktail. This variation on Lemon & Lime Sour contains Bai Jiu, (distilled from wheat), egg white, lemon, lime and a splash of grenadine. Even the silver challis, in which is it presented, was designed by Alvin. And then perhaps embark on the Chef’s Menu, a gastronomic journey of some 14 courses. It begins with a small wooden box with the unpromising title of the ‘Dead Garden’. But inside: sublime dried porcini mushrooms, overlaid on a foam of green onion and lime, with freeze dried Enoki mushrooms. The second course nestles on a silver tree (again designed by Alvin). Two smoked quail eggs are perched on the branches, topped with Oscietra caviar and a gold leaf, resting on a nest of crisp fried taro. The nest symbolises family and unity in the Chinese culture. Here in London, Alvin describes it as his tribute to the great British institution of Bed and Breakfast. Next comes “Cloud”, which was created as a tribute to the rose. Indeed, the scent of that heavenly flower permeates this combination of mackerel, black sesame ponzu and ginger. It is presented on a glass spoon that rests on a silver platter, over a cloud of smoke. And so the journey continues, twisting and turning, delighting and surprising at every turn. Like all memorable experiences, let’s just say this could not accused of being inexpensive. The Chef’s Menu is reflective in the price. But then this is a meal you will not only digest, but re-tell. Suitably enough, you’ll be dining out on the experience for years.

Bo London: REVIEWS An early review from Metro London said:

You don’t eat off anything as mundane as a plate at Bo London. Instead, ‘bed and breakfast’ (smoked quails’ eggs set in a crispy nest of deep-fried shredded taro, topped with caviar) rests on the branches of a stainless steel bonsai tree. ‘Cloud’ is a white china spoon of mackerel, topped with a black sesame foam that’s served on a bowl that burps little puffs of dry ice, and you suck palate-cleansing chilli-infused tapioca pearls, hawthorn tea and basil foam through a straw from an illuminated, outsized test tube. In awarding it four stars, the reviewer adds:

There are numerous times during the three-hour meal when we’re stopped in our tracks by delicious flavours, unusual ingredients and breath-taking presentation. However, at these prices, everything simply has to be perfect. BO LONDON

Crosby Street Hotel

New York There is nowhere like New York for inspirational hotels. Although the Crosby Street Hotel has its design roots in London.

Crosby street hotel

A trip to New York never fails to inspire you It’s a city of full-on energy. Upfront, up-close emotion. Unbridled creativity. And a metropolis from which you always return exhausted - yet creatively re-energised as never before. So why anyone chooses to stay in a corporate box is one of life’s mysteries. New York has numerous inspirational places to stay, where great design is viewed as being as fundamental as a comfortable bed.

When the owner is the designer Just one example is the Crosby Street Hotel. It has a major head start in its location: not only is it in the vibrant SoHo district, its street is described by Vanity Fair as “the most prestigious thoroughfare in the neighbourhood - all cast iron and cobblestones, slightly off the beaten track, lined with independent boutiques.” It also has an unfair advantage. Its co-owner, Kit Kemp, is an accomplished designer. Along with husband Tim they run the exclusive London townhouse group Firmdale Hotels. Her work at the Haymarket Hotel won her the Andrew Martin International Interior Designer of the Year award and House & Garden Hotel Designer of the Year.

An 11-floor design masterclass The Crosby Street Hotel offers 86 bedrooms and suites over 11 floors. Each has high ceilings and is flooded with natural light from the full length windows. The ground floor blends wood, metal, glass and stone. The lobby is dominated by a dramatic 10 foot high Jaume Plensa steel sculpture of a human head created from letters of the alphabet. Wherever you look, Kit’s eclectic collection of modern art is evident - whether it be an interesting Peter Clark dog collage in the reception or mixed media pieces by Justine Smith and Jack Milroy. The vast Crosby Bar has wide grey oak floorboards and a long pewter bar, presided over by an oversized Dodo. Chairs and banquettes are covered in chic fabrics, lit by original 1950’s ceiling lights in a multitude of shapes and colours. Many of the 86 bedrooms and suites give spectacular views of the downtown skyline. Each has a tall headboard, sleek modern furniture and specially designed lighting. Sumptuous fabrics give way to chic wallpapers, and antiques and custom pieces share the room harmoniously. The hotel is a series of carefully conceived spaces. There’s a spacious leafy central garden, a sumptuous guest-only drawing room, several stylish private event and meeting rooms, a luxurious 99 seat state-of-the-art screening room and a well appointed gym. Next time you’re in New York City, tell them we sent you. www.crosbystreethotel.com

Furniture design that’s totally out there UBER seeks out the best in design - Gloster Furniture If you regard ground-breaking design as an essential in your life, its location is irrelevant. Whether it is contained within four walls - or open to the gods and the elements - the same rules apply. The rules of colour and form; of use and comfort; of creativity that causes a frisson of pleasure every time it catches your eye. Gloster Furniture understands this thinking perfectly, and for some 50 years has been challenging conventional wisdom about exterior furniture. We love their sense of adventure, even to the point of taking traditionally interior concepts straight outdoors.

Asta: Stylish, stackable, contemporary and out there (in every sense), this Italian designed collection features stainless steel rods bent and welded to create a continuous curved form. You can also mix things up and change the mood with different changeable sling seat colours. Last year Gloster added a highly popular stackable dining chair (with and without arms) as well as a deep seating lounge chair and ottoman. Now for 2013 comes a multi-position lounger as well.

Dansk: Where is it written that you have to choose between traditional or modern? The Dansk collection is an artful blend of both. Light, tactile and welcoming to the eye, its clean lines hark back to classic Danish furniture design for all seasons.

Casa: Never afraid to celebrate influences from the past, the Casa range melds Art Deco opulence with fine tailored upholstery that is totally of the moment. It works beautifully, with the contrast of bright, stainless steel accents and the dark metallic covering. Casa is available in both dining and seating formats, including a selection of modular units so you can mix, shape and arrange as you like.

Cloud: The Cloud takes the plump, curl-up-and-snooze sofa and turns it into an all-weather concept. Quite literally, this completely upholstered range is 100% waterproof so you can take the inside, outside. In a choice of five outdoor lounge fabrics - Onyx, Ivory and Taupe Leisuretex速 and Dove and Raven Soft-Touch fabric. The range also includes tables with tops in slatted teak or quartz stone.

A home cinema rides again How Sensory International, digital entertainment specialists, revamped and rejuvenated an old home cinema. The first home cinemas were really quite something when they first started appearing. But of course, state of the art then can seem like state of the ark now. In the case of Sensory’s clients in Cheshire, they had an old home cinema which they knew didn’t deliver the experience you can achieve today. In addition, the interface was so complex and un-user friendly, they had lost the will to bother with it. The lady of the house also found the room plain and uninspiring.

Having carried out a detailed survey of the existing room and equipment, Sensory designed a system that met the client’s requirement that the speakers be hidden away.

Time for a revamp Sensory International are automation specialists. They conceive, design and implement all aspects of automated technology, for homes, offices and indeed superyachts.

Sensory’s system had the speakers concealed behind the screen. They also recommended a 7.2 speaker system with surround processing and amplification. This system is capable of generating a mighty presence that you don’t so much hear as feel, courtesy of the speakers and multiple subwoofers. The system, with its preset EQs (equalisers) also delivers optimal sound quality according to where the clients sit in the room. The projector was upgraded to a 3D 1-chip HD projector which is future-proofed to progress up to full 3D as and when the client chooses.

The challenge here was not merely to upgrade a system but to incorporate it subtly and cleverly, working in concert with the client’s own interior designer, The Design Practice by UBER.

The system is as neat as it is impressive. As well as the concealed speakers, the system units were built into a wall cavity and hidden from view behind a wall panel. The redesign of the adjoining

bar space allows the look to flow through incorporating individual reclined double seating, cinema-style in two rows of three. The lighting fixtures in the room were also replaced to give the room a more moody ambience, complementing black crushed velvet wall coverings. Sensory also addressed the all-important interface, which is now driven from an iPad that the whole family uses effortlessly. The result is something of a transformation. The clients and their friends have been blown away - almost literally - by the quality and power of the system. They are also delighted by its ease of use, and revel in the stunning look and feel of the room. Actually, make that ‘auditorium’. www.sensoryinternational.com

Technology as your servant

Music, video, climate, security - Sensory International can welcome you to the joys of an automated life. At its heart, good design is about something working perfectly and looking beautiful. That’s as true for a coffee mug as it is for a car. However, all too often you’re forced to choose between those two essentials of aesthetics and performance. That is a compromise too far for the design ethos of UBER and indeed their automation partner Sensory International. Sensory are masters of automation in all its guises. From digital media rooms through to

uber-lifestyle.com // 0845 0773280

leading edge security systems, they understand that providing the very pinnacle of digital technology is actually only half of the challenge. They know that they need to design and implement in a way that will grace some of the most exquisite residences imaginable, from country houses and mansions to loft apartments and superyachts. Ironically, one of the greatest compliments they can receive is how their work can be made literally invisible. Sensory loves nothing more

than the design challenge of installing, for example, a complete home cinema system - all of which can be made to vanish into wall panels and up into roof spaces. What you can’t see is sometimes as clever as what you can.

What Sensory International can do for you? Automation has the capability to make a real contribution to your life; through entertainment certainly, but also through creating an environment for you that is more welcoming, comfortable, safe and secure. At the heart of all of these possibilities is something you might think of as a central nervous system for your home (or indeed yacht). Sensory installs an invisible network of cabling that can then serve a multiplicity of functions, now and long into the future.

Audio The joy of digital entertainment is that virtually every song ever recorded is now within your

reach. Sensory brings you music on demand, to any or every room in your house. It can be drawn from your own collection, someone else’s iPod or the full breadth and depth of Spotify and the internet. You also have access to the world’s radio stations as well.

Your whole video system can also be integrated. So imagine, for example, watching the first part of a movie in the bath; then picking it up again in your dressing room; and enjoying the denouement with the full surround experience in your cinema after dinner.

Video and Home Cinema

Lighting and climate

Many Sensory clients have asked for full video and movies on demand to be connected up in bathrooms, bedrooms - indeed every room in the house. With even a modest budget Sensory can also bring you the full cinema experience at home with a feast of 3D, HD, Blu-ray, LED, latest HD audio formats and more. All presented with automated lighting, remote controlled hidden screens and an array of other technologies neatly tucked away out of sight.

A host of civilising touches can be enabled through home automation. For example, being greeted by curtains automatically drawn each morning, or by a particular playlist, lighting configuration and temperature as you come through the front door at night. It can all be pre-programmed for your every whim.

Sensory photos above show the design and testing process for a complete yacht installation to guarantee everything is tested and working before installation. The same attention to detail is followed for all clients, even for a single room cinema installation - where the client is invited to Sensory and see their technology in operation and for final tweaks.

Security

Bringing it all together

Home security is now considered by many to be as essential a service as energy or water. Sensory automation can provide 360° protection, and real reassurance, for you and your family. At the same time, you don’t want a Fort-Knox ambience taking over your home. Sensory can integrate, subtly yet very effectively, state-ofthe-art high definition cameras, video entry and intruder detection technology. The system can be monitored from a control panel in your kitchen or sitting room - or for that matter from your smartphone on a beach.

The true hallmark of great automation is when it is clever enough to be simple. Sensory designs and installs highly complex technologies. Yet the front end that you use could not be simpler or more convenient to use. Everything - from music, movies and climate to lighting and security - can be controlled by a simple control panel or iPad. So you don’t need a degree in computer sciences, or a handy 12 year old, to operate the system and get the very best from it.

Volley after volley of style

The Boodles Classique: It seems that during the English summer, there are garden parties. And there are fine sporting events. But in our book, true happiness is when the two are artfully mixed together.

The Boodles Classique is just such an occasion and it arrives this year at the Mere Golf Resort & Spa. It will be an unmissable combination of enthralling exhibition tennis, played by some of the legends of the game, including Mark Philippoussis, Henri Leconte, and two Wimbledon champions Richard Krajicek & Goran Ivanisevic with all the essential ingredients of a quintessential garden party. Which means that you are never far away from the pop of Moët & Chandon, beautiful food and an altogether English elegance in which to entertain your guests. In the Boodles Gallery, The Mere’s Executive Chef, Paul Jobling, and his team will serve a delightful 3 course lunch with carefully selected fine wines. Following lunch, Etihad hostesses will escort you through to your reserved grandstand seats.

Following play this year the Tournament Director has introduced the new Asahi Afternoon Party, where guests will enjoy a twist on the traditional afternoon tea while relaxing in the sunshine in the fabulous Roche Bobois furniture. Indeed, with the title sponsor Boodles - purveyors of exquisite hand-made jewellery for more than two hundred summers - style and elegance pervades every part of this occasion.

The Warren

Instant relaxation, sumptuously created

There is something rather satisfying about a holiday home, at home. Twelve //

While others are searching for their passport, you’re already pouring a Pimm’s. And while they’re delayed in a terminal yearning for the beach, you’re already lying on one. In the case of The Warren, we’re talking about one of the most spectacular sandy beaches in the whole of the British Isles. The Warren is a collection of luxurious holiday homes with views over Cardigan Bay so breathtaking and inspirational they could turn you into a poet overnight. (Especially with a little help from that Pimm’s).

Beautifully equipped and finished, you have a choice of luxurious homes that feature everything from whirlpool baths to temperature-controlled wine coolers, as well as lodges with under floor heating, and climate, lighting and security systems you can control from your iPhone. Relaxation here is instant and irresistible, partly because all the essentials of life are right to hand, ready and waiting. The beach itself could have been created for water sports, jogging, waterskiing, power boating (there’s even a slipway for boats) or simply lazing on its soft golden sand.

The Gent magazine // the warren

The Warren complex also includes no less than three outdoor heated pools, including a children’s pool where they can splash away while you watch from the poolside bar. There is also a heated indoor pool for you to enjoy throughout every season. When you do feel like stirring yourself, there are four outdoor tennis courts as well as badminton and squash. There’s also a fitness suite, a sauna, a tanning room and a beauty room. So while the kids are getting happily exhausted with a supervised junior gym and even basketball, you’ll have plenty of time to spoil yourself.

Great food is an essential ingredient of any holiday, and the Warren has got it covered. From an informal pit stop at the Beach Café or an impromptu pizza or pasta takeaway - to the magnificent fine dining at The Warren’s members-only club restaurant, where they celebrate innovative flavours and fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Throughout the year, you’ll also find a fantastic programme of entertainment and events, from live shows and discos. The Warrenstock beach party is in its third year, last year Edith Bowman headlined and this year they have DJ Spoony.

The lovely seaside village of Abersoch – with its pretty harbour, cafes, bars and restaurants – is also just a short drive away. ‘Pre book a VIP tour and enjoy lunch on us’* book now by emailing Info@the-warren.co.uk or call 08433 092407 and quote ‘gent’. The Gent magazine // SUITS

Suits

A seamless explanation The Gent explores the three main categories of the tailoring world The differences of how a suit is made can run into hundreds and indeed thousands of pounds. It’s therefore important to appreciate the craftsmanship and expertise that go into it, and indeed to understand what you are paying for. Your next suit will either be bespoke, made-tomeasure or ready-to-wear. Here we explain the facts behind each so you’re better equipped to make that sartorial decision.

Bespoke A bespoke suit is like an original piece of art; a one-of-a-kind that no one in the world can copy. To commission your own bespoke suit is one of life’s great pleasures. It offers total freedom to design and create precisely the suit you want in the cloth you prefer, almost without limits. (Back in the superheated 1980s, a City trader even ordered a bespoke suit that was pin striped with actual gold.) The point is, anything is possible. A bespoke suit will be cut and then fitted by the same craftsman. You will be required to attend possibly three fittings. Your suit will be made by hand, usually in the workroom on the premises, to standards that no untrained and mechanised process can ever equal. Not surprisingly, the ‘B’ word is jealously guarded by the Savile Row Bespoke Association. Wherever you buy your bespoke suit, those are the qualities it must have. Expect to pay for the privilege: a bespoke suit from Savile Row will probably cost several thousand pounds.

Made-to-measure

Ready-to-wear

Made-to-measure is the most personalised option other than bespoke, offering a vast choice of fabrics, linings, cuts, fits, silk linings, buttons and special finishes. This extends, for example, to how many buttons you want on the cuffs and even a different colour thread for the button holes.

For the majority of people, ready-to-wear suits are the most practical and affordable option. There is also the advantage of the garments being immediately available, and you are able to see, feel and try the finished article, and usually alteration services are offered to make sure that the suit will fit well.

At Brooks Brothers, their made to measure service begins with an appointment with one of their personal tailoring specialists. He or she will have a wealth of experience of both made-tomeasure and indeed bespoke tailoring. They take full measurements from you and also use a ‘suit block’ (or ‘try on suit’) to achieve the best fitted result. Next, the happy conundrum of choosing fabrics, linings and buttons. Brooks Brothers offer only the finest Italian wools, including cloths from one of the world’s most luxurious mills, Loro Piana. Next: the design. Their expert will guide you in deciding on fit and cut; single or double breasted; one, two or three buttons; lapel style; flat or pleated-front trousers; turn ups or not; cuffs and every other detail. With everything chosen and noted, Brooks Brothers forward your precise specifications to their tailoring house in Italy. Then, the tough part: the patience required while their tailors attend to every detail of the garment. Then, 4-6 weeks later, your beautiful suit is ready, made-to-measure especially for you.

Ready-to-wear has not even been around for 200 years. Brooks Brothers were the first company to introduce Ready Made Suits (Off the Rack) to America in 1845. This was due to the high demand from new arrivals to the “new found land”, and the founder, Henry Sands Brooks, had to improvise to keep up with the high demand for suits. He started making suits on size blocks and just finishing these off for his customers. This changed lives of a large proportion of the population, because during these days, people used to have all their clothes made by tailors - which was expensive. If you were poor, you would have depended on local seamstresses who made rough garments intended to last for many years. Basic clothing was so expensive and hard to come by, that it was common practice to have apparel patched, reworked and even dismantled so that new garments could be created from the assorted pieces. Today the ready-to-wear industry has been refined and is thriving. Brooks Brothers however still use the traditional half-canvas lining in their suit lining to this very day. The canvas is still threaded with horse main and goat hair. The result, a suit that moulds to the wearer’s form and that helps to keep the suit’s shape beautifully for many years to come.

Made-to-Measure and Ready-to-Wear suits are available at Brooks Brothers, The Avenue, Spinningfields, Manchester, M3 3HF

Bespoke & Ready to Wear Shirtmakers Made in England 66 Jermyn Street, London, SW1Y 6NY 020 7930 9980 sales@emmawillis.com www.emmawillis.com

You can share the President’s shirtmaker with a visit to Emma Willis in Jermyn Street, London.

From a townhouse to the White House Just as ‘Savile Row’ is shorthand for the world’s finest bespoke suits, so ‘Jermyn Street’ tells you all you need to know about a beautiful handmade shirt. That’s why it’s no surprise to see Emma Willis take her place among the other legendary shirtmakers congregated in that illustrious street of London SW1. Design, cut, shape, fabric, detail, finish – all come together beautifully under the expert eye of one of the industry’s most exciting practitioners. Emma’s creativity and fresh take on beautiful shirts has also led to her appointment as GQ’s Favourite Bespoke Shirtmaker. And she launches on Mr. Porter online with a new collection of shirts, ties and boxer shorts in May 2013. Emma’s customers include President Obama, David Gandy and Dermot O’ Leary. Rather closer to home, she’s also a frequent visitor to Headley Court where she donates her time and energy to making her beautiful shirts as gifts for injured servicemen undergoing treatment there.

In the English manner

For you and you alone

At the risk of letting in a little daylight into the magic, Emma’s shirts, like everyone’s, are made away from Jermyn Street.

Bespoke fittings in the Jermyn Street shop are not just about measuring you up. You will also receive a wealth of advice on the best weight of cotton for your lifestyle, such as voile, batiste, Oxford - or even cashmere & cotton, or a cotton and linen mix.

In her case, a Grade II listed town house in Gloucester, close to the cathedral. Inside is a workroom humming with the painstaking activity of producing an altogether finer class of shirt (and indeed boxer shorts, swimming trunks, dressing gowns, pyjamas and socks). Emma’s philosophy is to adhere to the original traditions of English shirt making, using luxurious Italian and Swiss cottons, silks and linens. Many are exclusive to her collections. Her team cuts the fabrics so that all patterns are matched at the seams. Each shirt is sewn at the rate of 18 stitches to the inch, using single needle stitching for the neatest, strongest seams. The collars are hand trimmed before they are turned to ensure clean cut, sharp points. They also use mother of pearl buttons, and little handmade gussets at the side seams.

The joy of bespoke is that you have free range on the precise finish you want. This includes the colour of the stitching; and the weight of the lining – and contrast colours and patterns – for collars and cuffs. Your personal appointment will be with one of Emma’s tight-knit team of three, and they will store your measurements and preferences for future orders. You can then order shirts that are genuinely unique to you, from wherever you are in the world. You will however need to draw on a little patience. Craftsmanship takes time; in this case, it will be four to six weeks before you experience the sublime feeling of a beautiful fabric, cut in perfect alignment with your individual shape, fitting like a second skin. But one thing’s for sure: it will be well worth the wait.

The Gent magazine // The profile club

Exciting Exclusive Effective

The Gent discovers a business club with a difference Like many of the best ideas, theProfileClub came about following an informal meeting with like-minded people who were seeking a similar goal. Barbara Hallwood is Managing Director of Marketing Profile, a PR, Marketing and Events company based in Hale, Cheshire. She heard, time and again, the same lament from her clients that there were no real networking opportunities for people at the top of their careers. So in 2011 she decided to do something about it – and theProfileClub was born. theProfileClub is a members-only business club aimed specifically at those in the top echelons of their industry sector. The club has an official sponsor for 2013: Marriott, and is working with a

range of leading partners including Manchester City, Etihad Airways, Sytner, Mottram Hotel & Spa, Elegant Resorts and Manchester United.

theProfileClub also offers its members an exclusive package of benefits including leisure and hospitality offers.

The standing of theProfileClub’s membership has attracted senior decision-makers from right across the Greater Manchester region. Barbara Hallwood comments: “We invite Members to bi-monthly meetings which offer top level introductions and presentations by leading regional business leaders. The focus here is on quality rather than quantity: we offer targeted networking which can create genuine business opportunities.”

Looking ahead, Barbara adds: “We will continue to grow theProfileClub to encompass a wider range of business sectors. We will also maintain our policy of restricting our membership to senior and key decision makers. This and our refreshing approach is what separates the club from run of the mill networking events.”

Members are also invited to bespoke and corporate events across the North West and Cheshire, with a successful blend of business and pleasure. Barbara commented: “The atmosphere is key: it’s a relaxed yet focused business environment that never loses sight of its clear aim: to make useful new contacts.”

As the strapline says - theProfileClub is created with ‘you’ in mind. For more details on what theProfileClub can offer you visit www.theprofileclub.com and www.marketingprofile.co.uk

class isn’t always simple

the traditional men’s barber, is introducing a whole new generation to the joys of a Hot Towel Shave. Pores for thought

At Flanagans they take real pride in showing their customers the difference between proper grooming and simply ‘going for a haircut’.

Hot towel shave

For example, have you ever experienced an expert wet shave? Every man should try it but, be warned, you’ll be a convert for life. At Flanagans they call it the ‘Hot Towel Shave’. Part of its attraction is simple: it’s a few blissful minutes of downtime when you can literally sit back and relax for some well-earned indulgence. The shave starts with a cleanser, and then come the hot towels which are there to really open up the pores. (There is also something totally invigorating about burying your head in a steamy hot towel.) Next come the invigorating oils, and then the shave itself: lashings of shaving cream and, just like in the movies, an open razor, expertly applied to the contours of your face to deliver the closest possible shave. To finish: more towels and a rich moisturising cream to nourish the skin. It is then completed by a facial massage.

Grooming products can be bought from Flanagans to use at home.

Grey hair: the no fuss camouflage

You may find the odd grey hair at any age and at Flanagans they have the perfect answer. Their camouflage ‘Colour Blend’ works with your natural colour to achieve a subtle knockingback of any grey strands. That’s why it looks natural, without the crude ‘dyed’ look that home treatments can have. Just as important, there’s no song and dance, foils or fuss. The Colour Blend takes five minutes to apply, another five to do its stuff, and then a rinse.

Flanagans client - before and after the hot towel shave

Not surprisingly, it is fast becoming as popular as the Hot Towel Shave. For both, or either, just give your nearest Flanagans salon a call. For more details check out their website at www.flanagansbarbers.co.uk or visit our facebook page at www.facebook.com/ FlanagansGentsHairdressing

Men’s Cosmetic Surgery

The top 10 treatments

The Gent magazine // BMI Healthcare

The Gent explores the growing popularity of cosmetic surgery for men, with BMI Healthcare, the uk’s largest private hospital group. When it comes to grooming and looking after his appearance, the evolution of the male of the species has been slow - but steady.

procedure that makes a big difference, making your ears less prominent and leaving them perfectly matched to the rest of the features on your face.

It seems laughable now but as recently as the early 1970’s it was considered ‘unmanly’ to wear deodorant. Today of course it is routine - demanded, even - and a similarly relaxed attitude is spreading to men who ‘have a little work done’.

5. Liposuction

Mr Gary Ross, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at BMI The Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle, comments: “There are many reasons why increasing numbers of men are seeing cosmetic consultants. We’re living and working a lot longer, so the need to be professionally presentable is more important than ever. But we also live in an increasingly visual world. And if a man can spend time and money on good clothes or a good haircut, why not on eyelids, bags, faces and chests?”

top 10 male treatments in 2012 Men are seeking help for all kinds of reasons. Here we feature the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) top 10 treatments.*

1. Nose reshaping (Rhinoplasty)

Your nose is not only central to your face, but can directly affect your self-confidence. A rhinoplasty procedure can change the shape of the nose, reposition the bridge, remove bumps or alter the tip.

2. Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery is a straightforward procedure that removes some of the excess skin and tissue to give you a fresher, more youthful look.

3. Chest reduction (Gynaecomastia)

A new word has entered the language in recent years: ‘moobs’ (man boobs). They are very common, and a source of worry to some. Reduction surgery is a simple procedure that removes the excess breast tissue, fat and sagging skin to leave you with a sculpted, more masculine chest.

4. Ear correction (Pinnaplasty)

Sticking out ears may be something you were born with, but you may choose not to put up with it anymore. Pinnaplasty is another straightforward

You can spend your life in the gym and, unfairly, find you still have pockets of fat around your chin, arms, stomach or buttocks that seem impossible to shift. Liposuction can permanently solve this annoying problem by removing the offending fatty deposits. (However, bear in mind that it is not a weight loss tool.)

6. Facelift & Neck lift

Nothing can turn back the clock, but lifts to your face and neck can reverse the visual appearance of getting older. You have three main options with facelifts: a full facelift, a mini facelift or mid-facelift surgery. This needs to be discussed carefully and in detail with your consultant surgeon.

7. Fat transfer

Fat transfer is the process of taking fat from one part of the body (often the abdomen, hips, thighs or buttocks) and transferring it to another part, such as the face. This can restore volume where it has been lost or correct facial scars.

8. Brow lift

A brow lift, or eyebrow lift surgery, helps to remove your wrinkles and gives you a more youthful appearance.

9. Tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty)

If you’ve lost a lot of weight, you may find you’re left with folds of skin around your middle. Simply getting older can have the same effect. A tummy tuck can give you back the youthful flat stomach you remember, by removing the required amount of fat and tissue as well as tightening those abdominal muscles, if needed.

10. Male chest enlargement (Pectoral augmentation)

If you’re looking for a more developed physique from your chest, pectoral implants could help you achieve a stronger, more defined appearance. The ageing process and changes in weight can also weaken your chest muscles and cause them to sag. Chest implants increase the projection and bulk of the pectorals, giving a more sculpted physical presence.

Taking things further Although it’s often trivialised in the media, cosmetic surgery can play a vital role in the confidence and mental well-being of men and women. This can range from tidying up something that simply irritates you to addressing a deep-seated concern that you may have carried with you since childhood. If you’re thinking about seeking treatment, the first thing is to take your time – cosmetic surgery is just like any other medical procedure and is not a decision to take lightly. Do some research online about the possible treatments available to you. Also do your homework on the credentials of hospitals and surgeons who may be able to help. They should comply with the standards required by leading providers such as BMI Healthcare (see below). Even then, be prepared to ask as many questions as you like about their individual experience in your required treatment, and the realistic improvement they may be able to offer you. A reputable Consultant will not hesitate to turn down a case if surgery is inadvisable or simply unlikely to achieve a meaningful benefit.

About BMI Healthcare This article has been prepared with the support of BMI Healthcare, the UK’s largest private hospital group. In addition to offering top quality healthcare standards, all BMI Healthcare’s cosmetic surgeons are: • of Consultant status; • listed on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council; • are required to hold full indemnity insurance For more about BMI Healthcare and their range of cosmetic surgery procedures or non-surgical treatments visit: www.bmicosmetic.co.uk or call us on 0800 051 2321

The Gent magazine // pulse of perfumery

LUBIN – PULSE of PERFUMERY Peter murray from Pulse of Perfumery goes on the scent of Lubin’s distinctive creations. Vetiver

Unapologetically masculine, Vetiver is a classic men’s fragrance that exudes class and individuality. For some, it’s a cold, crisp day sort of a scent with its smoky green fragrance, although for me it evokes my father, resplendent in his full-length cashmere coat, taking my mother to the theatre in the evening. The fragrance opens with soft citrus notes of mandarin and grapefruit. I am a great fan of the resin of frankincense, an aromatic, balsamic sweet note, which I feel adds an almost historical element to the fragrance. To enjoy Vetiver’s true depth, wear it first for 10 to 20 minutes. The mystical notes of myrrh and incense are beguilingly spicy and smoky, as if tobacco were part of the formulae.

Idole

This will surprise people and get them asking what you’re wearing - but in highly complimentary way. Idole eau de parfum is an exotic, spicy, warm and unusual scent. Both men and women love it, particularly after the initial alcohol hit and opening notes of Rum Absolute and Bitter Orange quickly ease back. In their place, fascinating notes come into play: Doum Palm (ginger scent) and Black Cumin combine with other spices to create a rich and warm feeling. Saffron, Amber & Frankincense add mystery and the use of Sugar Cane delivers sweet, aromatic and exotic connotations to the overall scent. You can wear it anytime, although it is perfect for an evening occasion.

Itasca

To encounter Itasca is like discovering the great outdoors in a bottle. Its classic masculine zest for life whips up your senses into a frenzy. Analysing its complex scent is quite difficult, and indeed is part of what I love about it. Certainly, Cedar wood and Pine from Minnesota are dominant, although the spiced Vetiver adds a smoky green aroma to the fragrance. The opening notes are very fresh and invigorating and once the Myrrh and incense begin to make an appearance its bracing and invigorating complexity comes to the fore.

Available from Pulse of Perfumery 25 Princess Street • Knutsford • Cheshire • WA16 6BW • 01565 755650 www.onthepulseofperfumery.com

Akkad

A fragrance that is as exotic as the bottle that contains it, Akkad stirs the senses of both men and women. If you are looking for a fresh, citrus opening, yet with a lovely woody aroma, this is certainly for you. Amber, spice and notes of Clary Sage and Styrax (think vanilla ice cream) combine as a euphoric, harmonising element. This is a feelgood scent; an instant hit of happiness.

In an age of the obvious and the mass-market, Lubin fragrances are refreshingly intriguing and beguiling. A host of discoveries awaits you, so delay no longer.

Road car? Race car? The LaFerrari blurs the boundaries

Thirty two //

The Gent magazine // Laferrari

You’ll need to be quicker than a Ferrari itself to get your hands on a limited edition LaFerrari.

It would be something of a criminal waste if Ferrari’s phenomenal race car knowledge did not filter down for the benefit of we ordinary mortals. Well, for 499 of us to be precise. That is the tantalising limit which Ferrari is putting on its extraordinary new LaFerrari creation. This Frenchsounding model is nevertheless a red blooded Italian powerhouse in true Ferrari tradition: an elegant piece of automotive sculpture with outrageous performance waiting to be unleashed. Conceived on the F1 and GT race tracks of the world, LaFerrari boasts the most extreme performance capabilities ever distilled into a roadgoing Ferrari.

It is also the first car with hybrid technology to come out of Maranello. The 6262cc V12 produces 800 CV, with an electric motor delivering a further 120 kW (163 CV). And if ‘kers’ is something you have only heard yelled out of your TV by Martin Brundle, here it is harnessed for the road. The technological leap forward represented by the HY-KERS system makes LaFerrari the most high performance and efficient Ferrari ever built. HY-KERS guarantees maximum integration between the V12 and the electric motor, seamlessly blending extreme performance with maximum efficiency.

Thirty four //

The Gent magazine // Laferrari

Beast and beauty

Raw power

A Ferrari simply wouldn’t be Ferrari without that presence; that indefinable might and majesty, sculpted into a form which is art itself. Yet every inch and curve serves engineering, aerodynamics and aesthetics.

If performance figures define a supercar, LaFerrari takes its place among the true elite. The car will cover the 0-100km trip in less than three seconds - on its way to a maximum speed of more than 350 km/h. Perhaps it’s fortunate, then, that discs and new ultra lightweight callipers reduce stopping distances (by an impressive 30m, from 200 down to zero km/h).

From the earliest concept stage, the model has been the child of dual parents: the Ferrari’s Styling Centre, headed by design chief Flavio Manzoni, and the engineering and development departments. LaFerrari’s overall silhouette and proportions reflect Ferrari values as well as the layout of its hybrid running gear. Although bristling with innovation, its sleek profile is true to Ferrari’s V12 sports car archetype: the cabin and engine compartment are contained within the wheelbase, to achieve the best possible balance of its masses.

In creating this machine Ferrari brought in the expertise of Rory Byrne, the legendary F1 designer who was responsible for no fewer than 11 of Ferrari’s World Championship-winning cars. It shows.

From the side, the car has a sharp, downwardsloping nose and a very low bonnet which emphasises its muscular wheel arches. Ferrari cognoscenti will recognise this evocative homage to exuberant late-1960s Ferrari sports prototypes, such as the 330 P4 and the 312P. The spirit lives on, and how.

The Gent magazine // catherine mcqueen

From glamour girl to landlady T he G ent m eets C atherine Mc Q ueen

A lady who defies categorization, Catherine McQueen has been variously a model, a TV reporter and producer, a singer and DJ, and a property developer. She has modelled for global brands including Dior and Chanel, and worked for Al Jazeera Sport and ESPN in front of, and behind, the camera. Despite this she actually trained as a lawyer and is now completing an MBA in Finance at Cass Business School. She has also been investing in property for nearly 15 years, with a portfolio spanning London’s Chelsea, Primrose Hill and Maida Vale, Scotland and Northern Europe. She is a director of McQueen Property Development Ltd. She also won Celebrity Fear Factor securing £10,000 for Cancer Research UK, sang on the dance track Time After Time which reached no. 15 in the US Billboard Charts, and has DJ’d extensively around the world.

Q

Catherine, you’ve covered tennis on TV, so who do you think is going to win Wimbledon this year?

A

“As a Scot it would be great if Andy Murray could win…”

Q And is Wimbledon the most spectacular

sporting event that you have attended?

A

“Actually, I love Roland Garros in Paris. The atmosphere is great and the press passes are amazing. You could go and watch the final from the roof of Court Philippe Chatrier or the photographers’ pits under the court.”

Q You’ve obviously travelled the world. Which

is the most vibrant city you have been to?

A

“I genuinely believe that London is the best city in the world. However bearing in mind this miserable Easter we’ve had, Singapore is coming an ever-closer second…

Q

You’ve also spent a lot of time in Los Angeles. How do you think that the Americans have taken to the proper European version of Football?

A

“I heard that the broadcasters don’t like it as much as American Football as there are less breaks so less time to advertise!”

Q …although work seems to fill a lot of your

life. You set up a property business renting residential property in central London to top modelling agencies. What advice can you give to aspiring landlords?

A

“Picking the right areas is really key. I still like just walking around, talking to local shopkeepers and popping into the local estate agents to really get a feel for a place.”

Q

And do you think the London property market is still going crazy or are there are bargains to be had?

A “Prices are high but they are still rising particularly

in the prime areas. However, if you are buying as a rental investment it is important to look at your yields and the higher the initial price the lower your yields could be. The area of highest rental yields in London is Forest Hill. I like to look for capital appreciation as well as income so I prefer to buy a place that needs a bit of work or through auctions and try to make up the gain there.

Q

What do you feel are the up and coming areas of London that are worth keeping an eye on?

A “I am looking around Harringey at the moment.” Q We know that you are legally trained; what

is the best piece of advice that you can give to

Q What gadget can’t you live without? aspiring landlords? A “I would like to think that I could still live without A Be aware of what is legally required of you,

any of my gadgets! That said though my iPhone has definitely helped me immensely.”

Q What is your favourite holiday destination? A “I like to discover new places.”

from annual safety checks that you need to take out, to complying with the Housing Act legislation on HMOs (House in Multiple Occupation). “You read it here first. Catherine, many thanks!”

Home is where the HMRC decides it is

If you come and go from the UK, new rules have come into force to decide on your tax status. In an increasingly mobile world, one thing is for sure: every country would love to lay claim to all of your taxable income. But what are the rules? In which country are you ‘a resident’? And if you come and go from the UK, are you liable to pay UK tax? For some people, the answer will be clear. For example, if you are physically present in the UK for 183 days or more during the tax year (6th April to the following 5th April), you are deemed to be resident here. But the position is less clear if you are not, but have strong ties to the UK. There are presently no statutory rules to determine residence so individuals have to rely on HMRC guidance. This rather grey area has led to an increasing number of cases coming before the courts. As a result, a new Statutory Residence Test is being introduced from 6th April 2013. For tax purposes, you will need to decide which of three categories applies to you and, therefore your tax position.

• Automatic overseas test

I f you meet any one of four conditions, you are automatically non-resident. These conditions are broadly based on days spent in the UK, having regard to previous periods of tax residence and also when you are working full-time overseas.

One thing is for sure: if you are in any doubt, and with the new rules now in force, it is important you ascertain your tax status without delay. For further information please visit The Gent website at www.thegentmagazine.co.uk/tax

• Automatic UK test

If you don’t meet the criteria of the automatic overseas tests above you will automatically be a UK resident if you meet any of four automatic UK tests. Broadly, these are based on time spent in the UK, having a main home in the UK and also when you are working full time in the UK.

• Sufficient ties test

If you don’t meet any of the automatic overseas or UK tests above, you will need to look at the sufficient ties test. This test compares the number of days spent in the UK against a small number of connection factors including family ties, work ties, accommodation ties, and time spent in the UK in either or both of the previous two tax years. The more ties you have to the UK, the fewer the number of days you will be able to spend here without becoming a UK tax resident.

The Gent magazine // Worsley Park

Have you got the drive to be on TV? Your opportunity to play Worsley Park, Manchester, on Sky Sports.

Be honest. You’ve dreamed about it.

About Worsley Park

You, striding across a manicured 18th green thronged with hushed spectators, with the voice of Peter Alliss in your head (“So this... for the Open Championship.”)

The Marriott Hotel and Country Club opened the 18-hole Championship-standard golf course in 1999. It went to the top of the charts for golf in the North West, hosting Manchester’s largest and most prestigious tournaments.

Well we can’t quite offer you The Open. But if the idea of playing on television makes your pulse quicken, you might just be able to make that happen. The prestigious Trilby Tour is coming to the Championship golf course of Worsley Park, Manchester. And so are Sky Sports, to cover the event. It’s a priceless opportunity for amateurs to test their game (and their nerves), on TV, and on fairways previously trodden by Rory MclIroy, Brandon Grace and Alvaro Quiros. No pressure there, then. All standards of handicapped amateurs are welcome to participate in the event, which takes place from 5th June 2013. See the link below for entry information.

The natural maturity of the course has been enhanced by a major £250,000 investment. New drainage, re-profiling of the bunkers and over 6000 tons of sand mean that this parkland golf course is playing at its very best. With its unobstructed views of the neighbouring countryside, the welldefined manicured fairways and USGA greens, it is a delight that every golfer must experience. You can also receive coaching and clinics from Head Professional David Screeton, who imparts a wealth of knowledge to players of all levels. The club shop will also kit you out with everything you need, with brands including Adidas, Footjoy, Titleist, Hugo Boss, Nike, J Lindeberg, Galvin Green and Srixon. The Gent magazine // Le Royal Monceau Hotel

Starck staring luxury Le Royal Monceau has to be the most creatively inspired luxury hotel in Paris. Not surprising when you enlist the talents of design guru Philippe Starck. If Paris is the world’s most sensual city, it follows that their finest hotels are an assault on the senses: a full-on visual, gastronomical and - frequently - astronomical feast which lingers in the memory for years to come. So as you approach its fleet of doormen and major-statement lobby, you instantly gather that Le Royal Monceau, Raffles Paris, fits this paradigm in every sense. It was a clear statement of intent when they hired the legendary designer Philippe Starck to handle the interiors. Starck has become a lifestyle brand in his own right, and let’s just say he is not exactly known for his timidity. This is not design in a safe pair of hands: the hotel he has re-invented is exuberant, celebratory and a temple to overstatement. Couple this with its perfect location - you are just an elegant five minute stroll from the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs Elysées and it is not surprising that Le Royal Monceau has rapidly become the place to stay.

The essence of cool But to gain this status takes more than just design alone. No matter how achingly cool your suites or ironic your taps, a hotel is a living organism. It lives and thrives by attention to detail; by standards; by breaking new ground - and by the presence of that unmistakable and elusive buzz. It’s a vibe that sheer bodies alone don’t create. It comes from the feeling that all around you, le tout cool Paris has come together to see, be seen, do deals and hang out.

The Gent magazine // Le Royal Monceau Hotel

forty four //

If you find yourself remarking how you could get used to this, be careful not to. The sheer luxury and startling design of Le Royal Monceau is something that keeps coming at you. In the bar, in the bedroom - even in corridors and washrooms. Just the garden somehow tells you everything you need to know about the ethos of the hotel: it is adorned by a huge teapot, created by the artist Joana Vasconcelos. But then art is in the hotel’s DNA: it even has its own gallery, Art District, an art bookshop and a dedicated blog (‘Artforbreakfast’). Still with the arts, you’ll find a guitar in your room, and when the muse strikes you can even ask to use their portable recording studio.

Presidential and palatial If you happen to have a boat in need of being pushed out, check into a presidential suite. This is where the sheets and linens are impossibly soft; where the mirrors, at the flick of your remote, become TVs; where the bathrooms are a shrine to decadence on an epic scale. Your fashion urges may also propel you to L’Eclaireur which has a space in the hotel. While for something more contemplative, there is also a resident Clarins spa. This haven of peace and relaxation is a paradise of pure white. It even includes a 23 metre pool, the largest ever built in a Paris luxury hotel. Its exclusive treatments, hammam, laconium room and sauna make this hotel a temple of tailor-made luxury. Alternatively, you can take refuge among the Havanas and Montecristos in the cigar room, or repair to the cinema.

The gongs Awards and recognition have duly flowed, both from the cognoscenti and indeed simply travellers who feel they have made an exciting discovery. Indeed, the hotel has recently been voted one of the top 25 Luxe hotels in France by contributors to the all-powerful Trip Advisor. It has also garnered two coveted Michelin stars: one for its French restaurant La Cuisine and the other for its inspirational take on modern Italian cooking: Il Carpaccio. So, here’s the venue. Now it’s just up to you to find the excuse. For more information please visit www.leroyalmonceau.com

The Gent sneaks off to the lakes

The Lake District It’s a region that has beguiled and inspired some of the giants of English literature. What more proof do you need when the creator of Postman Pat himself lived there? Oh, and so did a chap called Wordsworth. The one who had a thing about daffodils. If you live in the North West, there is nowhere to rival the Lake District for a weekend away. In fact its jaw dropping beauty becomes something of a road safety issue as the mighty scenery that greets you around each corner simply demands that you tear your eyes from the road. But if you can combine it with the very best in Lakeside hospitality, haute cuisine and a touch of vintage British tradition - well that’s a weekend that has to be explored.

What makes the Lakes doubly special is an establishment called Holbeck Ghyll. Renée Zellweger stayed there whilst making Miss Potter. Fellow actor Joseph Fiennes described it as “gorgeous (with) fantastic views, hospitality and food.” You may also have seen Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon lunching there for The Trip, their gastro tour of the north. Now it’s your turn. • The Holbeck Ghyll/The Gent weekend away offer • A two night (Saturday and Sunday) weekend away at Holbeck Ghyll • Luxurious accommodation in a Junior Suite • Saturday dinner in the hotel’s restaurant • Sunday night gourmet dinner in the Michelin-starred restaurant • For your enjoyment: A 1962 Jaguar E-type Fixed Head Coupé Series 1 for a day • 2 complimentary spa sessions per day

An appetising package all round Holbeck Ghyll is offering The Gent readers a truly memorable weekend away. It features sumptuous hospitality, award-winning gastronomy and even a touch of vintage 60s glamour in the shape of an E-type Jaguar. More of which later. Outside, you are greeted by a robust residence of grey stone and slate, bay windows, gables and turrets. Inside, the welcome is altogether softer, with its Arts and Crafts interior, an Inglenook blazing with logs, oak panelling, polished wood floors and rugs. Cleverly, Holbeck Ghyll has a comfortably period feel without feeling tired or dated. You have a choice of 13 beautiful rooms and suites in the main house, a further six exquisite rooms in The Lodge, two luxury cottages, two fabulous suites and the splendid Miss Potter suite. (As occupied by Ms. Zellweger.)

All in the line of duty, The Gent has been wallowing in the sumptuous luxury of Holbeck Ghyll in the Lake District - to arrange a very special offer for our readers.

The rooms have been individually designed and, between them, you’ll find options of four posters, private terraces and hot tubs. The views over Windermere are never better than when accompanied by a glass of locally-distilled damson gin from the decanter. Whatever your idea of relaxation, Holbeck Ghyll and its environs are ready for you. You can take breathtaking walking as a given, and a stroll around Troutbeck or Ambleside will restore mind and spirit while working up a splendid appetite for the gastronomy to come. There is also tennis, a putting green, and the sport that reveals the darker side of even the most saintly companion: croquet. In addition, the concierge can arrange a host of activities including horse riding, professional bird

watching, cycling, climbing, canoeing and clay pigeon shooting. Alternatively, you can take refuge in the hotel’s own health spa, complete with sauna, steam room and treatment rooms, and the therapeutic qualities of E’spa products.

Your table is ready Many a gastronomic pilgrimage has been made to Holbeck Ghyll. The hotel currently holds four AA red stars and three Rosettes. It is also one of the select few in the UK to hold a Michelin star, a distinction it has retained for 12 years.

hand-dived scallops with spiced cauliflower, apple and raisin purée, and best end of Cumbrian lamb with black-olive gnocchi & aubergine. In summer, there’s a terrace overlooking the lake for summer alfresco dining. Two cosy lounges (one with a log fire) host traditional afternoon tea and post-prandial drinks. And if you have a sudden urge to get married, leave it to General Manager Andrew McPherson. He took care of Madonna’s nuptials at Skibo Castle in Scotland.

Investing in Diamonds: a Multi Faceted Experience

fifty two //

by Laurie Wickwire, CEO and Founder of The Berkeley Diamond Group Diamonds: I love them, I desire them, but mostly, I respect them. After 27 years as an international diamond merchant, jeweller and diamond specialist, I have watched my interest in diamonds evolve from seeing breathtaking jewellery to recognising alluring investments. How things have changed in this market. Back in the 1980s and 90s, investment diamonds were big and very expensive: they were diamonds of least 20 carats which were locked away in vaults across the world. But since 2009, the diamond industry has enjoyed double-digit growth figures for rough diamonds. Couple this with plummeting diamond production figures because of the financial crisis and you have the recipe for a strong investment choice. An investment stone is carefully graded, and size alone does not necessarily make an exciting proposition. The colour, clarity and cut must all be of excellent grades, and certification from a premier house (such as GIA, IGI or HRD) is crucial. So why isn’t everyone running out to purchase this dynamic investment vehicle? Well the fact is, there are no futures prices for diamonds. So unlike precious metals such as gold, whose prices are freely available, diamond prices are only quoted in the industry ‘bible’ Rapaport. But it’s only available to pre-vetted industry insiders.

Because diamonds are so complex, it is also very difficult to commoditise the diamond market. A successful investor needs years of study in order to buy investment stones with confidence. For that reason, if you want to invest in diamonds you need to call Berkeley Diamond Group on 08456 116 1512.

Why investors choose diamonds Like gold or real estate, diamonds are a tangible investment. You can see and touch them. With increased governmental debt in the western world, the decline of several major currencies and volatile equities markets, tangible is good. They are also beautifully practical. An investor can transport thousands or even millions of dollars of diamonds with ease. I recall a lovely old diamond merchant once telling me “there is no law prohibiting a beautiful woman going through an airport wearing a large diamond”.

But remember: I’m not talking here of the diamonds in high street windows. I’m talking about investment grade diamonds, the crème de la crème of stones due to their colour, clarity, size and cut parameters. These are so special, global production in one year will yield just 750 stones of between 1.00-1.39 carat, D colour, Internally Flawless. They must be shared between the diamond-loving women of the world, as well as increasing numbers of new diamond investors and indeed institutions and nations. I believe in diamonds. They are small and beautiful yet carry a big value. And as well representing beauty, luxury and love, they even bring security as well. No other investment can offer you that much!

More fundamentally, their consistently rising value is making them all the more coveted. But unlike a typically popular commodity which attracts new suppliers and competition, the very basic law of supply and demand does not apply to diamonds. With no new significant diamond mine discoveries in the last two decades, prices have continued to increase at approximately 15-25% year on year; larger, rarer stones have seen considerably stronger performances and have often doubled their estimates at auctions. The global demand for diamonds is set to continue rising as emerging markets, predominantly China and India, continue to protect and increase their wealth. In fact the surge in middle-class households in India and China is expected to increase demand by 20% each year for the next five years.

Laurie Wickwire is the CEO and Founder of The Berkeley Diamond Group. She is also a GIA Certified Diamond Grader, International Diamond Merchant and the on air diamond expert for QVC UK.

Range Rover Sport Less Burghley horse trials, more Bond Revealed: Range Rover’s feisty new Sport. When you decide to whip up a maelstrom of publicity to launch your car at the New York Motor Show… and when you choose James Bond himself to race your car through NYC’s flooded tunnels, Times Square and into the press launch… well, you’d better have something pretty special to show the world. In the case of Land Rover, you have to say they have. Just unveiled is the 2014 Range Rover Sport, and if Daniel Craig doesn’t yet fit your perception of a car more noted for Burghley and Badminton than Brooklyn and the Bronx, it soon will. Although unmistakably from the Range Rover stable, and built on the same lightweight platform, 75% of the Sport is actually unique to the Sport. It has also been on a serious (one hesitates to say crash) diet. The new car is some 420kgs lighter than its predecessor, thanks in no small part to its all-aluminium body. The result is improvements in economy and emissions of up to 15%.

The Range Rover Sport is a striking machine: mixing styling cues from the bigger and smaller models into a purposeful, poised and super-luxurious sports utility vehicle.

The technology of Sport Lookswise, if you like meaty and muscular, look at the Sport head-on. Or if sleek and refined is more your kind of car, drink in its profile. The Sport does both beautifully. Like a recalcitrant teenager it’s very much part of the family - but in its own way, on its own terms. Inside, it has all the Range Rover hallmarks woods, leathers, assured design - yet with clean surfaces (there are 50% fewer switches) angular lines and sense of sporting purpose. It also bristles with technology, starting with a mighty 3D audio system from Meridian. Then there’s head-up display, an app to show the car’s fifty eight //

telematics and remote control for its heating and navigation systems. Also on offer: a power tailgate where you can programme its opening height (clever); a surround digital camera system to give almost 360º views of the car’s exterior (interesting); and a dual view dashboard screen to keep both driver and front passenger happy (smart). Power to perform But let’s talk power, because if you’ve ever found that ‘sport’ just tends mean the mildly pokier member of a range, the Range Rover Sport will not disappoint.

Behind the wheel of the LR-V8 supercharged petrol model, this 5-litre powerhouse will propel you from 0-60mph in 5.0 seconds. Or there’s a 3.0 litre SDV6 diesel option which still clears the same sprint in 6.8 seconds. Deliveries begin in September, with an SDV8 and a hybrid scheduled for January. Prices? They start from around £55,000.

Called to the bar

Meet Alex Kratena: hailing from the former Czechoslovakia, he is head bartender at the award-winning Artesian Bar in the Langham, London, and is the capital’s leading mixologist. In other words, he is a master of the art of cocktails and travels the world spreading - or rather pouring - joy. He is also Imbibe Magazine’s Bar Personality of the Year 2013 and, we’re delighted to add, a new regular columnist here in The Gent. I may have missed the first golden age of the cocktail, but there’s no doubt we are living in the second. No longer are professional bartenders assumed to be students doing a part-time job. And people are appreciating the difference between an artfully made cocktail, and the hangover-in-a-bucket sloshed around on all inclusive holidays. Bartenders are the new drinks trend directors, bringing a true depth of knowledge of taste, temperature, texture and of course the intimate characteristics of every ingredient. Some of us are also on the front line, handling media, working with drinks companies and shaping ‘the next big thing’. At The Langham, London, we believe a modern cocktail should capture all your senses, be served in elegant glassware, and bring together passionate flavour combinations that will live long in the memory.

Creating the magic at home

Why bore your guests with straight champagne when you can stir up so much magic at home? Balance is the key. If you’re entertaining and don’t want to spend all evening hard at work mixing (trust me, I know…), a punch can be a fabulous alternative. You can do everything in advance, you don’t even need a shaker, and it lets you concentrate on your friends and the food.

Packing a punch

I love this punch recipe. You need 2 parts of gin, 1 part of lemon juice, a half-part of earl grey syrup and champagne. Pour the gin into a punch bowl or container, squeeze over fresh lemon juice. Use half of your empty gin bottle as a measure, and on the side prepare some earl grey tea syrup. Mix one part of the hot tea with two parts of caster sugar and stir until dissolved. Use the very same gin bottle to measure a quarter of the earl grey syrup and keep it all refrigerated. Once your guests arrive simply pour 1 part of your blend of gin, citrus and sugar syrup into a wine glass full of ice, top up with two parts of champagne, and you are all set!

COCKTAIL: PUNCH 60 ml Gin 30 ml Lemon Juice 15 ml Earl Grey Syrup 120 ml Champagne GARNISH: Lemon Wheel METHOD: Built GLASS: Wine Using recipe measured by bottle serves 14 portions

Meridian

Are your ears ready for such refinement? Beloved by audio connoisseurs, The Gent discovers a niche high-technology brand that may not - ironically - have reached your ears. It can be a mixed blessing, living with perfection. Musicians with perfect pitch can be driven halfcrazy by an instrument that’s out of tune to even the tiniest degree. Similarly, there are those who know the full potential of what technology can deliver, and simply cannot tolerate anything less. We suspect that two people ‘cursed’ with such standards are Bob Stuart and Allen Boothroyd. Bob first: he studied Psychoacoustics, Electronic Engineering and Management at Imperial College, London. Overlay this with a love of music and it was clear he was destined to forge a life using the former to enhance the latter, by specialising in audio design. This passion for music led his path to cross with Allen Boothroyd, who trained as a mechanical engineer and then went on to study industrial design at the Royal College of Art. The result, born out of a real desire to hear music in all its glory, was a new company called Meridian. The venture was formed in 1977 and, today, Bob still heads all technological developments while Allen leads the design team. Meridian is an example of British enterprise at its best. Today, the company makes an array of digital media products such as CD players, surround sound systems, video technology and in-wall speakers.

Uncompromised standards have led to some of the most highly-praised audio equipment in the world. It is also heartening that while most consumer electronics come to Britain by the container load, Meridian equipment is made in small numbers, in the UK - and much of it by hand. For example, its loudspeaker cabinets are hand-made using layers of carefullychosen woods, interleaved with aluminium (a special combination they call ‘Meridium’). Many electronic components are also still inserted and soldered by hand. The performance and technology of those components have led to the British Design Council Award for Outstanding British Products an unbeaten three times. Meridian is also designer of choice for one of the more acoustically unfriendly environments: the car. The company has a long history of purposedesigning in-car entertainment, most recently for another British success story: the Range Rover Evoque. If you’re a fortunate owner of this breakthrough SUV you can choose between two purpose designed Meridian sound systems: a 11-speaker, 12-channel, 380-watt system with a special dual-channel subwoofer; or a mighty 825 watt surround sound system featuring 15 amplifier channels driving 17 loudspeakers. Just resist the urge to close your eyes as you listen to its sumptuous, all-enveloping sound. The Gent magazine // Jaguar F-Type

In the metal. In Royles, Wilmslow. The long-awaited Jaguar F-Type is about to be unveiled. RSVP for your invitation to the Champagne launch. You could say that it has taken a long time for Jaguar to figure out that ‘F’ follows ‘E’ in the alphabet. It’s 52 years, in fact, since Enzo Ferrari hailed the E-type as ‘the most beautiful car ever made’. Now, the F-Type is about to be shrouded in mystery no more. At Royles in Wilmslow they’re chilling the fizz and preparing for an evening that reduces calm grown-ups to goggle-eyed youths once more. It will be worth the wait. If you had to judge a car on appearances alone, the F-Type is magnificent. Punchy, purposeful, powerful rear haunches - this is a car that makes its intentions plain.

Performance: More ‘F1’ than ‘F’

The F-Type is an out and out performance car. Choose the basic F-type (£58,500) and you’re in command of a 336 bhp supercharged V6, which will propel you from 0-62 mph in just 5.3 seconds. Top speed: 161 mph. Or opt for the 375bhp V6 S (£67,500) and the sprint passes in 4.9sec on your way to a top speed of 171 mph. Or take things to the max with the eight-cylinder S (£79,950). With 489 bhp at your disposal, the 62 mph trip is accomplished in a trifling 4.3 seconds. Top speed: 186mph.

The Gent magazine // Suttons & Robertsons

Making cash flow in King Street London’s oldest pawnbroker has brought two centuries of tradition to their showpiece store in Manchester. Pawnbroking is an ancient way to ease cash flow problems and its history dates back some 3000 years. But in King Street Manchester, a whole new generation is discovering for the first time how easy and pleasant it can be. There again, this is the UK’s leading pawnbroker and fine jeweller Suttons & Robertsons. Founded back in 1770, they are London’s oldest but have just celebrated their first anniversary in King Street. Here on Manchester’s classiest shopping street they lend money against such high-value items as Rolex watches, Tiffany jewellery, art and even luxury cars. Indeed, Suttons & Robertsons has the financial resources to offer secured loans of up to £1million, rapidly and with complete discretion.

Quicker and simpler than a bank Operations Director, Phil Diaper explains:

Branch Manager, Catherine Lloyd says: “We have had wonderful feedback from our customers, who appreciate the time we have for them and the excellent customer service we provide.”

Few people are immune from occasional cash flow problems. There are hundreds of people out there needing extra short-term cash – from paying school fees on time to business investment opportunities. Like a credit card or a mortgage, pawnbroking is just another way of using assets you already have to borrow money. Banks are often unable to help and our customers prefer the straightforward nature of our business.

Their store is also a treasure trove of beautiful things to buy, offered by an experienced team to guide you. So look for the famous pawnbroking sign of the golden balls sign next time you’re in King Street. They may not be able to promise you David Beckham, but Suttons & Robertsons have all kinds of fabulous things to show you. Suttons & Robertsons has increased its store

portfolio with the opening of a shop in Bristol. For more information call our Bristol shop on 0844 846 7111.

The Gent magazine // Hilary Meredith

Hilary Meredith Solicitors is a personal injury law firm, headquartered in Wilmslow. Hilary Meredith, CEO, speaks to The Gent about her firm, the law and her 25 year career. Hilary, tell us about your firm

And you’ve recently expanded

“We opened on Water Lane in Wilmslow in 2003. A decade later, we employ nearly 50 staff and are seen nationally as being among the market leaders in our field of personal injury.”

“We have indeed. We travel around the country wherever we’re needed in order to gain justice for our clients. In July 2012 we opened a new office in London at Central Court, Chancery Lane. Its focus is on military claims, and this puts us on the doorstep of the Ministry of Defence in Whitehall, and of course the law courts. It’s also ideal for Southern-based clients and barracks.”

You must be proud of your progress “I am really proud of the fantastic team I have here, and what gives us all great satisfaction is that we have secured more than £55 million for our clients. Those funds are not just recognition for our clients - in most cases, they were also desperately needed. So as a team, we take real pleasure in producing a successful outcome.”

Give us some detail on the kind of work you do “We represent the interests of people and their families who have been injured or killed. In particular, I have acted for members of the armed forces worldwide for more than 25 years. They’ve needed our help legally following serious events ranging from jungle warfare in Belize to aviation accidents from the South China sea, and of course conflicts and theatres of war including Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Gulf War 1, Iraq and now Afghanistan.

So you’re dealing with the personal fallout that comes from those conflicts “Absolutely. A recent case involved an Afghan national policeman who opened fire and killed five soldiers. Obviously that was utterly devastating for the families involved. But very often, it can also be the start of an ongoing nightmare as the financial realities start to kick in. They haven’t just lost a husband, wife, dad or mum, but often their main breadwinner as well.”

So your case load is all about the military? “Not at all. We also undertake a lot of general work ranging from people injured on the roads to sporting accidents and overseas claims.”

So face-to-face contact is important? It’s vital. Tools such as Skype are useful and we use them all the time, but there is always a need to sit down face-to-face with a client, or indeed opposing lawyers.

How do you address the practical needs of your clients? “I set up my practice with the key goal of finding ways to improve the quality of life of people affected by severe injury. “Our commitment to client care means that we are always looking at rehabilitation and enhancing lives post-injury.

In what way? “For example, in 2011 we set out to provide more accessible technology to those with serious injuries. We now provide complimentary assistive technology in the form of iPads to seriously injured clients. “The touch-screen is easy for them to use and they can speak to us from their own home via our ‘Face2Face’ application. This has been a great success, revolutionising the way in which claims can be progressed and really making a difference to the comfort of the client.”

And what about social media? “We have a Twitter account, @HMhelpforforces, where we upload news and advice and respond to clients daily. This has been a wonderful tool for the firm and we now have 1500 followers - including the government and MOD!”
