Feeling the heat for all of us Ryan Collins

rcollins@ubmedia.biz

Smoke starts to

billow in rippling waves as eight firefighters gear up, preparing for what’s to come. A nearby fire engine idles in the crisp November night, fire hoses snaking out towards the amassed group of firefighters, who are now ready to take on the inferno.

A 40-by-8 foot long simulation structure emits an amber glow, slowly illuminating the dark as the fire inside begins breathing slowly at first, but all the while, gaining life. The firefighters enter the structure one after another. Visibility inside the structure is eerily limited, with the heat inside the structure fire reaching up to

600 degrees fahrenheit, giving the men a painstakingly real taste of the heat they will face fighting fires with lives on the line. An instructor awaits outside the simulation structure, keeping a keen ear on what is transpiring inside. After a few minutes, the instructor cranks a wheel, opening the ventilation hatch on top of the structure, sup-

plying oxygen to the fire inside, increasing the heat. A few minutes later, the firefighters inside the training structure emerge through a cloud of dense smoke passed the threshold of the entrance and make their way to the back of the structure, signaling the end of the SEE Heat on Page 4

Ryan Collins ubmedia.biz Doug Brown and Tyler Mckee pull a flaming barrel during a simulated fire exercise November 15 in Lapoint. Brown and Mckee, along 24 other firefighters from across the state, took place in a training simulation over the course of two days, aimed at teaching some of the elements associated with a real fire situations.

Eagle of the month

Uintah Basin Christian Academy's second grader, Khloe Walker, starts each day with happiness and joy. Her behavior in and out of class is consistently kind and respectful. She gives her work her best effort, and always seeks to understand a concept and learn from her mistakes. She respects

those around her by listening and following directions. Khloe is also willing to help others and be a friend to her classmates. Great job on earning EAGLE of the Month! UBCA eighth grader, Angeleena "GW" Gardner-Wooldridge, is an outstanding student. She was on 1st

Quarter Honor Roll with a 3.7 GPA. GW works extremely hard at her studies and can be counted on to always have her assigned tasks completed. GW is very helpful at school, both to teachers and to fellow students. We are proud to name her as October's EAGLE of the Month.

fire behavior and flash-over training. The exercise is similar to going into a burning home at a lower safer level rather than what can actually hurt the firefighters, according to Lapoint Fire Chief, Tyler Mckee.

“Some of the guys, this is their first time,” Mckee said. “For the majority of the guys, this is their third or fourth time doing the training.” Firefighters from Altamont, Avalon, Naples, Jensen and the Vernal airport all came to Lapoint to take place in the simulation over the course of two days.

With the holiday season quickly approaching and residents decorating their houses and trees with everything that glows, it’s important to have properly trained firefighters ready for whatever may happen. including a National Lampoons, Clark Griswold type situation.

to court records. Estimates have placed the total damage caused by the Maeser fire to be more than $800,000. The penalty for third-degree felony arson may result in zero to five years in prison and a fine up to a $5,000. Sentencing on the amended charge will take place Feb. 20, 2018 at 1 p.m. in Vernal District Court and the case has been referred to the Utah Adult Probation and Parole agency to, “prepare a presentence investigation report (PSIR),” according to Chief of Policy and Communications, Daniel Burton. A PSIR is an investigation done to look into the history of the guilty party to determine if there are extenuating circumstances that may impact sentencing. Sentencing has been scheduled out for three months while Olson faces prosecution in federal court for another fire which took place on BLM managed land. The June 9 fire resulted in the evacuation of the Yellow Hills subdivision and Olson originally pleaded not guilty to both the original charges October 18, but on Tuesday, pleaded guilty to reduced charges. Public Information Officer, Jason Curry of the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands stated that as he investigated the origins of the Maeser fire, he obtained, “physical evidence consisting

of a burned cigarette and match combination.” Based on his training, Curry said he recognized a delayed ignition device made specifically to incite a blaze. Court records state Curry, “located and reviewed video evidence at a local gas station that showed Rex Olsen purchasing the type of cigarette used at the scene to start the fire.” GPS data from Olsen’s patrol car also placed him at the scene at the time the fire was started. Curry conducted an interview with Olsen, who acknowledged that he alone was the person responsible for intentionally igniting the Maeser fire on June 9 and that he did so because he wanted to, “feel the excitement of it.” Olson worked for the Utah Highway Patrol from 2004 to 2012, leaving to work for a private organization and was then rehired by the UHP in the fall of 2016, according to the Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS). While Olson has pleaded guilty to the reduced amended charges from the June 9 Maeser fire and awaits sentencing, Olson will face one second-degree felony charge and a misdemeanor charge in state court stemming from a May 30 fire that closed part of state Route 40 in eastern Utah. Attempts to reach the attorney listed for Olsen were denied. Olsen was not incarcerated at the Uintah County Jail on the date of publication.

I got a really sharp pain in the leg. It was at least an 8/10 pain! Now, after treatment, my sciatic pain is gone away.

-Shirley H.

•••••

I had sciatic pain going down my leg for a month. It was painful. I couldn’t dress myself, I had a hard time lifting my right leg, and it was difficult to move around. If I was shopping, and leaned on the cart, I got a really sharp pain in the leg. It was at least an 8/10 pain! Now, after treatment, my sciatic pain has gone away, I still get a pain every now and then, but not like it was. Now, I can dress myself easier, I can lift my leg, I can bend over better, Now my pain is only about a 2/10 pain, its way better! I’m happy with my care and I’ve already recommended it to somebody else! I think the beds really help! They stretch my back out and I think that has made the biggest difference for me. I’ve noticed a real difference.

I had been told by another doctor that I would have to have back surgery, and with this treatment, I told him no I won’t have to do back surgery because it has helped so much and I have so much relief.

I get to do things I haven’t done in 15 years... My quality of life has went up so much... the treatments here have helped me way more ever than the back surgery did!

-Brent C.

Well, I’d had back surgery before and I was at the end of my rope again. I was thinking I needed to have something done again. Just wasn’t sleeping, wasn’t able to function through the whole day, and I came to see you, and I really liked how you made me go get an MRI first. Before I even went, you gave me criteria of if you would work on me or not. That’s what I tell people right now, is that you tell us before we go get an MRI, you’re straight up with us, you tell us the criteria of if you’ll work on us, I really like that. After the MRI, I’m really glad I stopped because the MRI showed that my first back surgery had failed, and to tell you the truth I’ve just never felt this good! Even after my back surgery, as I do now with the Decompression and the adjustments. I really do appreciate it. I guess the biggest part of it is I didn’t feel like you were just up to, I guess more or less just taking the money, because you gave me the criteria before I ever went and got the MRI, and I liked that. The honesty, and what you’ve done for me, and how I’ve felt since, the quality of life I’ve had since, I get to do things I haven’t done in 15 years. I can go ride horses, I can team-rope whenever I want, just about anything, I really haven’t found limitations like before. I haven’t had the problem with the spasms. I like how I’m treated here. The girls are professional. You never feel like you’re rushed through, you don’t feel like a statistic. It feels good to come here. I think the staff is awesome. They are attentive, they’ll answer any question. I’ve never gotten this good of treatment anywhere. My quality of life has went up so much. I travel more now than I ever did, and I can do anything I ever did before I had back surgery. I’ve had several guys call me after their first visit and ask, “So what do you think about it?” And I say hey, this is what it did for me, I can’t promise you nothing, but I know what it did for me, and the treatments here have helped me way more ever than the back surgery did. I would tell anybody to do it!

The pain was a 10/10!... Now, I don’t have any pain at all, 0/10! I don’t have any limitations at all... I’d say to anyone thinking about doing this treatment, do it, before you do anything else ...I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!

It’s hard, because with back pain, you look O.K. on the outside. People think oh, you’re young, you’re spry, you can’t hurt that bad, but they don’t understand that this pain can bring you to your knees, where you can’t even walk or function. And I am very grateful to be done with that! I can walk, sleep, get out of bed, I don’t feel 90 years old any more! I am more confident that I can do different things and not be in severe pain. About two years ago, I was really having a hard time with my back. I’ve had back pain since I was 18 or 19 years old, as long as I can remember. The MRI I had 12 years ago, before I came to Uintah Basin Spine and Disc, told me I had four discs in my back pinching off the nerves in my back and pressing them. I wasn’t getting any relief from normal chiropractic help, it was actually starting to hurt me, and I was dreading it. I was looking at back surgery, seeing the odds, and talking with people that I had known who had back surgery and I wasn’t happy with the odds. It wasn’t something that I wanted to do because I was only 55 years old. So I was looking at something different. I had heard about your Spine and Disc Center on the radio and luckily I was able to make it over here and make it work with my schedule. I was really faithful with it, and the difference was unreal. The exercises you do at home, coming here and getting stretched and worked on, I’ve been amazed at my mobility! I was getting to the point that I couldn’t get down and play with my grandkids and didn’t feel I could interact with them the way that I wanted to. I couldn’t get down on the floor or go outside with them, so I was looking for something different, and I’ve found that this has been a lifesaver! I can sit. I drive school bus, so I sit all the time for eight hours a day and this has worked really well and I’ve made really good progress with it. I had been told by another doctor that I would have to have back surgery, and with this treatment, I told him no I won’t have to do back surgery because it has helped so much and I have so much relief. I would recommend this to anybody. I made some really good friends with other patients that I still have now that I met while getting worked on, and it’s great, and the nurses are really nice too.

This treatment saved my life! I remember coming in in excruciating pain. The pain was a 10/10! The most pain I’ve been in in my life. I’d already been to the emergency room twice. The pain was mostly down my arm, in my neck is where it started, but shooting pain down my arm into my hand and fingers was horrible. My hand was going numb, I couldn’t even make a fist. After the emergency room I was having to take pain pills one after another and the pain relief was only temporary. That’s when I called you. I couldn’t even drive myself to your office, I had to be driven down because of the severe pain. You worked on me a little bit, I was really stiff, then you sent me out for an MRI. Even the car ride out to get the MRI about killed me I was in so much pain. We came back and you showed me on the MRI that I had several bad discs in my neck and one really bad one, and you started working on me right then on your stretching machine. Within the first week, I was getting off the pain pills and muscle relaxers. I could finally function again, my husband had been driving me around until this time. I had relief within a week. It went from a 10/10 to a 6/10 and this was even coming off the pain pills. The shooting pain was gone. It was still hard to make a fist, I still couldn’t do my hair, or hold a brush, but the shooting pain was gone! Now, I don’t have any pain at all, 0/10! I don’t have any limitations at all. Now I can grip again, I can sign my own name again, I can write a check again and it doesn’t look funny. Heck yes this treatment was worth it! I would recommend it, and I already have. I’d say to anyone thinking about doing this treatment, do it, before you do anything else, do this first, try it, because I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!
