NASA Ambassador Thomas Quayle presents a solar system lecture to Uinta Basin residents at an event held at the Utah !Field House Museum on Thursday.

Story and Photo By Chelsea Deets

The Utah Field House Museum hosted NASA Ambassador Thomas Quayle on Thursday, April 18, for a lecture on the solar system followed by a Star Gazing Party at Steinaker State Park. Quayle, who works at Clark Planetarium in Salt Lake City, travels around Utah to schools and public

events like this one. He makes astronomy accessible to families, shares information about future NASA missions, and shows off meteorite samples from his planetarium. “This is part of a lunar meteorite,” says Quayle as he holds up a slice of gray rock in a padded box. “If you touch this, you have literally touched our moon.” There was quite a bit of excitement in the room as the sample was taken

offer. That’s where NASA comes in. We as a people have landed on the moon six times. We’ve sent unmanned spacecraft to Mars and collected samples. We’ve done flybys past Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus with data collection Mary Beth Bennis, Curator of Education at the Utah Field House equipment and cameras in of Natural History Museum, shared a sample of a lunar meteorite our need to understand our with those in attendance, allowing them to touch the moon. place in the universe. How are celestial bodies such as planets and stars created? What conditions must exist to create and support life? With 400 billion or so stars in our galaxy alone, many of those with orbiting planets, could life exist on other planets? NASA thinks so, at least in small forms. They are currently searching for evidence of bacteria that could survive in the extremely inhospitable environments of planets and moons in our own solar system. We know that bacteria can survive under extreme pressure in the depths of the ocean, in extreme heat next to geothermal vents, under Antarctica’s thick ice sheet, and in highly acidic conditions as are seen in Yellowstone National Park’s thermal pools. One common condition that is necessary for any form of life to exist, though, is water. NASA is currently looking at planets and moons in our own solar system that have or may have had water in the past. They’ve discovered Mars may still have water under its surface. Jupiter’s moon, Europa, has a subsurface ocean covered in a 20-milethick layer of ice. Alien life may be closer than we ever imagined. While most of us will never climb into a shuttle to visit foreign worlds, it is interesting to follow East 100 South Vernal, 435-790-9513 NASA’s progress. Families

L&L Motor Company

Welcome would like to

Brock Bowden At L&L Motor, we know that it is the people that make the difference and Brock is no exception. A native of Vernal, Brock graduated from Uintah High School in 2015. He then spent the next four years working in the oilfield. Brock married his wife Haleigh, in 2017 and they now have a beautiful little girl. Brock and Haleigh enjoy spending time in the outdoors, hunting, camping and mostly just spending time with friends and family. In March of this year, Brock chose to leave the oilfield to work for L&L as a Sales Associate. Brock knows what it’s like to work hard, and is looking forward to earning your business. Brock has enjoyed working with the basin community, and looks forward to continue to serve them here at L&L Motor.

can utilize events like this stargazing party where they had the opportunity to peer through high powered telescopes provided by the University of Utah for an up close and personal view of the full moon and Mars. “I love astronomy. My favorite part is looking at the stars through the telescope,” says Tucker Sorensen, who attended the event with his mother and sister. Fortunately, the sky was clear of clouds and Steinaker’s night viewing area was shielded from much of Vernal’s light pollution, which can hide the stars from view. For anyone who would like to be more involved with the scientific process of Astronomy, Quayle says scientists have collected so much data, they are looking for citizen scientist volunteers to help sift through the information. Please visit www.citizenscience.org for information of opportunities available in your area.

ADVENTURE

Continued from Page 2

L&L Motor is excited to have Brock on our team. Brock is both very bright and very motivated. His upbeat personality and engaging personal style only add to his exceptional skill set that he brings to the table here at L&L Motor.

The selection criteria includes towns with fewer than 25,000 residents, but they must be big on outdoor adventure opportunities such as mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing and kayaking. Voters can cast one vote per day until May 6 at the following link: https:// www.10best.com/awards/ travel/ The top 10 towns will be announced on Friday, May 17.
