PARTNERSHIP PROPOSAL

Founded in 2003, the Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati is an independent, not-for-profit foundation committed to enriching the livelihoods of young Indonesians through community-building arts and cultural programs. It was founded by Janet DeNeefe and Ketut Suardana as a healing project in response to the first Bali bombings in 2002. The primary goal of the Foundation is to give full expression to the creative needs of Indonesia, its individuals, and its communities, while simultaneously showcasing the diversity and rich cultural traditions of the archipelago to the world. Creating an ongoing space for cross-cultural exchange – and open-minded dialogue and exploration – lies at the heart of the Foundation. It achieves this through its two core initiatives: Ubud Writers & Readers Festival and Ubud Food Festival. Through these Festivals, programs, and associated activities, the Foundation promotes Ubud as a center for arts and culture, showcases the artists, writers and producers of Indonesia on the international stage, and helps Indonesians to reach their potential through educational and capacity-building programs.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL Launched in 2003, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival is Southeast Asia’s leading literary and artistic event. The UWRF’s mission is to create a world class festival that celebrates extraordinary stories, amplifies brave voices, and tackles global issues through open dialogue and cross-cultural exchange. The Festival is proud of its continuing success in bringing Indonesian and international writers and audiences together on the world stage. With 200+ events held across 45+ venues, 200+ artists, authors, thinkers, activists and performers from an average of 30 countries, the Festival’s fiveday program spans in-depth panel discussions, intimate special events, handson workshops, electric after dark performances, films, a children’s program and much more. A not-for-profit initiative designed to enrich the lives of young Indonesians, the Festival is proud to present 50% of its program completely free of charge.

ABOUT THE THEME:

Karma

The theme of this year’s Festival is Karma. Like many of the Festival’s previous themes, it is drawn from a Hindu philosophy. For Balinese Hindus, Karma is the spiritual principle that each action has a consequence equal in force, and similar in form. This year’s Festival will explore the impacts of our personal and collective actions on our social and physical environments.

UNIQUE? UWRF is Indonesia’s only literature and cultural festival to reach a truly international audience.

We provide a platform for Indonesia’s emerging and established writers, poets, journalists, artists, photographers, dancers and theater performers to showcase their work to the world.

UWRF is revered throughout the region as Southeast Asia’s largest, longest-running, and most diverse literature and cultural event –
on average speakers are drawn from over 30 countries.

Through our Annual Bilingual Anthology of Emerging Indonesian Writing, we nourish the careers of aspiring writers and create pathways for professional development.

Our program is made up of over 50% free events – making it accessible to all.

We have a fast-growing and highly-engaged social media community.

In 2018, 95% of our surveyed audience said they would attend again, while 97% would recommend the Festival to their friends and family.

We work closely with many local businesses and organizations – UWRF would not be possible without the support of the
local community.

We celebrate Indonesian cultural heritage and contemporary culture.

Our audience is diverse – drawn from across Indonesia, the Asia Pacific, Europe, America and beyond. Partnership Proposal UWRF19
