Media Partners During two unprecedented years we added a lot of new words to our daily vocabulary: Quarantine, Zoom, social-distancing, and indeed the catalyst of them all, COVID-19, but we also found the silver linings in what was an otherwise challenging year for arts organisations. The Ubud Readers & Writers Festival was able to forge ahead, presenting a hybrid festival of live and online events in 2021, fulfilling our mission to create a space for cross-cultural exchange and open-minded dialogue and discussion. In a year of the Festival theme encompassing humanity’s capacity to strengthen our ties as individuals and the world as a collective, we are finally able to meet again in person in October and engage on a deeper level. Knowing that we can gather once again in person in celebration of exceptional literature and unique voices and to deepen the impact, engagement and quality of those conversations, we hope you will be inspired to join this celebration and benefit from a wide range of print and digital exposure opportunities.

THE FESTIVAL The 19th Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (UWRF) is one of the major annual projects of the not-for-profit Foundation, Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati. It was first conceived in 2004 by Janet DeNeefe, cofounder of the Foundation, as a healing project in response to the first Bali bombing. The Festival is known as the biggest Festival of words and ideas in Southeast Asia. It helps to promote Ubud as an art and cultural centre, showcases Indonesian writers on an international stage, and helps young Indonesians to reach their potential through educational programs and literature. Proceeds from ticket sales are also used to cover free public events, free workshops for local children and high school students and their teachers, and to subsidise attendance of residents who otherwise could not afford to attend.

THE THEME From 27-30 October 2022, writers, artists, activists, and performers from Indonesia and beyond will converge for the 19th UWRF to share stories and ideas exploring this year’s theme: Uniting Humanity. This year’s theme is ‘Memayu Hayuning Bawana‘, an ancient Javanese philosophy that means the principles by which we care for, protect, and beautify our universe. Bawana refers to ‘our world’, which is not only a physical space but also a cultural and deeply spiritual realm. ‘Memayu’ is the way we sustain the beautification of our planet on our eternal path to universal harmony. UWRF translates this philosophy into ‘Uniting Humanity‘, which will unfold as a series of programs responding to Humanity’s capacity to strengthen our ties as individuals and the world as a collective. 6

STEWARDSHIP Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati is an independent, not-for-profit foundation committed to enriching the lives and livelihoods of Indonesians through a range of communitybuilding arts, cultural, and culinary programs. It was founded in 2004 by Janet DeNeefe and Ketut Suardana as a healing project in response to the first Bali bombing. The goal of the Foundation is to help fulfil the creative needs of Indonesia, its individuals, and its communities while showcasing its cultural diversity – both traditional and contemporary – to the world. Creating a space for cross-cultural exchange and open-minded dialogue and discussion is at the heart of the Foundation. It achieves this through its core initiatives, Ubud Food Festival and Ubud Writers & Readers Festival. Through these major international events, the Foundation promotes Ubud as a centre for arts and culture while showcasing the artists, writers, chefs, and producers.
