"By bringing the effects of time back to life and appearance, the designer may both restore and prepare sites for often unforeseeable futures.

Thus, there is also invoked an attitude of incompleteness; rather than building a final solution, seeds are sown, questions raised, and potential structured. In so doing, a designer may also highlight the stages of implementation and the measures required to sustain or develop it."

Calgary is one of seven MLA Programs across Canada that agreed to engage in a National Studio theme within their own multi-faceted regional contexts. The National theme of "Abandoned" was the driving force for our Winter 2020 MLA Year 1 studio. How we understand the meaning of "Abandoned" spaces in literal and metaphorical ways and how this plays out in physical and historical contexts was explored though our studio site analysis and design probes. The studio focused on the Nose Creek Valley on the East side of Calgary. Over time, this area has had multiple glacial, ecological, industrial, and urban development historical layers and stories. This studio engaged participants in developing a spatial and critical understanding of the Southern Nose Creek corridor's urban landscape mosaic and its diverse complex interfaces and relationships with the adjacent communities of Bridgeland, St. George's Heights, Renfrew, and the Bow River, the City Centre, the Calgary Zoo, the Telus Spark Science Centre, and major highway, railway, and LRT infrastructure. Students defined the boundaries of their individual project areas with an awareness that "In the landscape, there is not a hard limit, so closed that it does not crack and open on adjacent spaces. The elements of a landscape are always characterized by their faculty of overflowing, by the diversity and the complexity of pacts that link them to the next element" - M. Corajoud, 2000. Each studio project represents a design synthesis of this awareness/analysis of structural/morphological landscape systems and more intangible or ephemeral meanings of "Abandoned" that tell a story of how landscape identity and social engagement in space and place can be uncovered, created, conserved, and imagined.

ANAMNESIS

ALFRED GOMEZ

Telus Spark and the Calgary Zoo have been key institutions that promote the importance of education in Calgary. However, massive parking lots and obscure buildings are situated between these two destinations that creates a programmatic disconnection and leaving the in-between spaces feeling empty, under-appreciated, and abandoned. How can we expand the influence of Telus Spark & the Calgary Zoo and fill in the blanks of the in-between spaces? How can we create a confluence of education and knowledge? ANAMNESIS is the idea of recollection and reminiscing of previous experiences and the past and using them as a learning tool. The design proposal draws from the key process of how we learn and gain knowledge: CONNECT, ENGAGE, REMEMBER. In this case, the design proposal encompasses the idea of an experiential educational space where both users and the site interact with each other. ANAMNESIS is where learning consists of rediscovering knowledge.

GLACIAL POOL

The water feature draws inf luence from the historical forming of the Glacier Lake Calgary that came from the meltwater of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. The Glacial Pool provide flexible programming through the innundation of water based on the events and season. B

DRUMLIN FIELD

The fields accomodate modular classrooms in between the drumlin mounds where schools around the city can use for all-season outdoor classes. This allows for educational engagement closer to the natural landscape and encourage hands-on learning. C

BNDR INTERACTIVE LIGHTS

The installation includes a series of bendable streetlights made in different sizes where kids and adults can interact with. This emphasizes the idea of complete engagement with the space in addition to the natural landscape. C

CELEBRATION PARK

HEATHER HILSON

Landscapes can not only be physically abandoned, but also rendered obsolete and forgotten in the public consciousness. This project proposes a radical transformation of the existing landuse on-site to capitalize on the potential of the Creek to stimulate new development and a major expansion of the public realm. The park serves not only to restore ecological structure and function by reclaiming the floodplain and removing the most egregious spatial impositions, but it is also designed to provide a rich tapestry of diverse passive and active recreational opportunities to greatly improve the user experience of the site. The Creek serves as the glistening centerpiece of the park, and the programming elements are thematically united by their desire to invoke a sense of celebration and admiration for the Creek and its context within the parkland environment of the greater Calgary area. 0

10

20

40 m

The master plan incorporates thematically related programming elements centred around the notion of celebrating the natural landscape of Nose Creek and its surrounding valley. The civic centre (at right) is the heart of the proposed development.

The design objective for this project is to utilize the Creek and its riparian landscape as a powerful recreational amenity capable of catalyzing new development while expanding civic and green space.

The southern section of the Creek is focused on providing opportunities for users to enjoy recreation on the water as well as passively observe activities from bridges and docks.

The northern section of the Creek incorporates artificially constructed oxbow "splash zones" as way to allow safe swimming and floating in the water. The ampitheatre is located directly adjacent to the Creek.

The central civic plaza is a large, formal gathering space featuring constructed mounds that mimick the shape of the hills through which Nose Creek flows. Ambient glow pavers illuminate the space at night.

The southern plaza transforms into a skating rink, and shoppers frequent the retail shops of the high street. Paths are flooded to allow skaters to traverse the site during winter conditions.

ESTABLISH CONNECTIONS

CHANG LIU There are many nodes in the site that have opportunities to be developed. But the biggest challenge is the disconnection between these nodes. The objective is to establish connections of 3 important nodes which are Telus Spark, Calgary Zoo, and Tom Campbell's Hill. To establish these connections, I would provide accesses between every two nodes and add activities to reinforce connections. To connect Telus Spark and Calgary Zoo, I put several activities in the middle so that they can be a bridge to connect them. These activities are play spaces, a food court, and a plaza. The plaza can become a skating rink in the wintertime which is the major activity. To connect Calgary Zoo and Tom Campbell's Hill, I would create an elevated construction which across St Georges Dr. The destination of this construction would be an observation deck. There is a ring structure on the observation deck which allows people to see the city skyline through it. There are some benches, a shelter, two stop points on the construction.

View Point on Tom Campbell's Hill

To connect Tom Campbell's Hill and Telus Spark, I would design some landscape elements along an existing path to reinforce it. Because of the slope, I would use stairs for the path. The destination of the path would be an amphitheater that is built on the hill.

Thematic Identity

Strategies

Way-finding Signage

EMILY KAING The Glacier Walk is a public art proposal designed to address the abandoned spaces situated below major overpasses. The project prioritizes the experience of the human user, moving across the slivers of open space and confronts the existing discomfort caused by the obstruction, loudness, and darkness. Compounding the discomfort are signs of poor vitality of flora below the bridges, this is caused by vehicular salt mist from above. The existing condition demonstrates how the underpass becomes neglected in service of the cars above. The overall design utilizes existing infrastructure and regional pathway networks. The Glacier Walk enhances what is existing to create a sense of identity with signage and materials organized under the theme of glacial retreat, the geological process which formed the valley.

MORAINE

Night

16 avenue has the highest vertical infrastructure of the 3 underpasses within the Glacier Walk. The pillars and abutments supporting the bridge have incredible height and squeezes the pedestrian into a narrowed pathway. The design transforms the infrastructure into a Moraine by using the vertical surface as a canvas to create a very strong beacon of stone, light and ice, to transform this uncomfortable space a major entry feature.

GLYPHS

Night

Smallest of the underpasses is located at in the middle of the site. There are parking lots next to the abutments where users park and use this bridge as a gathering spot before heading down the pathway with their strollers, bikes, or dogs. There was an abundance of space between the abutment and the pathway which became a small informal plaza. Boulders are placed in circle under the bridge to indicate a gathering space, and the underside is refashioned into a cave covered in pictographs like carvings in Grotto Canyon just west of the city. The abutment is covered in stone and glass slag as another indicator of the continuing glacier theme.

MELT

Night

Memorial is the largest and most uncomfortable, dark and unsafe of the underpasses. It has 4 spans, 2 for cars 3-5 lanes and 2 for the trains. Similar lighting and material strategies are used to address the darkness which thematically ties its identity with the other landmarks. But here, the ice slips off the pillars and piles up along the stream to indicate the glacier is melting.

INFRASTRUCTURE AS HABITAT BEE HOTEL Existing

The piers holding up the trains are tall and skinny and receive full sun exposure, this condition made it a good spot to place a habitat for native bees. Its fairly sheltered and be warmed by the sun. Native bees such as carpenter bees or mason bee take shelter in wood with hole. The Bee hotel is attached to a wood clad pillar which softens the harshness of the concrete. The "rooms" of the bee hotel are simply logs with holes for the bees to nest in.

INFRASTRUCTURE AS HABITAT POLLINATOR PATHWAY

Night

With the landmarks established, there comes the question of the journey between them. Currently, a regional pathway connects all of the landmarks together, so what could be done to enhance the experience? To thematically tie the pathway into the site, all the pathways are made to look like a stream, painted blue with phosphorescent pebbles embedded in a meandering pattern. A pollinator plantings are added along the edge of the pathway, creating a linear habitat.

IN-VISIBLE-SPARK

WEIJIAN LI

The Project is located in the East of Downtown Calgary, AB where the Northwest corner of the Memorial Drive and Deer foot Highway meet. It is a place along the Nose Creek that is abandoned for a long time by the context elements. For example, the site is not easy to approach by the public transportation, it is sitting on the floodplain area, and it is only two iconic/historic elements on site which are the TELUS Spark and Nose Creek. Moreover, during 1924-1969 the was a former greenhouse at where the location of the TELUS Spark is now as well as there was Trout fish habitat in the Nose Creek in a long time ago. However, due to the environmental pollution, such as negative water quality, unstable banks conditions, the Trout fish is no longer survived in the creek that within our site boundary, and they either moved to upper northern stream or went down to the BOW RIVER for the better living environment. The goal of the design is to enrich the function of the site where the place in between the TELUS Building and the Creek. The objectives are to introduce the New Educational Building to the site (Green House/Trout Exhibition), to regrade the steam bank to address the existing erosion issue, and to create ponding area to minimize flood effect(Oxbow). In this way, the proposed design will bring back the loss of history, provide a new fresh breath to the site as well as thrive it as a long time goal on site. LANDSCAPE STUDIO II | DR. MONUMENT TO A CREEK

EMMA BRODIE

This project decision on analysis. Am see? Or am

started with a fundamental the direction of my site I interested in what I can I interested in what I can't.

Instead of doing an inventory of what is on our site now, I decided to look at what used to be. Using digitized aerial photos and maps of the area from 1924 until 2019, I analyzed the patterns of 3 different site elements: building footprints, road networks, and the path of Nose Creek. I became intrigued with the idea of daylighting the lost identity of the creek, creating a piece of land art that celebrated it's form, in order to monumentalize what we so easily abandoned to history. The 3 major components to the design are the memorial forest, sculptural wall, and earthwork. Instead of focusing on the finer detail elements of the site, my intention was to demonstrate the experiential relationship between the wall, the forest, and the berms.

Night Render - Lighting

I was looking to balance both a physical representation of the memory of the creek, but also a reminder of the hard, goal oriented, infrastructural projects that destroyed it.

Memorial Forest An important element that is currently existing on this site is a memorial forest. It is currently without rhyme or reason, with nameplates scattered on inconsistently shaped cairns. I saw this as an interesting opportunity to incorporate a passive memorial element into the overall project. To identify the forest, I created a gridded planting plan that is populated by donated trees from memorial services. This will create a strong sense of place, and differentiates this area of the park. Primarily planted with evergreens, my intent was to relocate many of the existing conifers currently on site. Deciduous trees can be planted along the grid in topographical depressions where water tolerant species are needed. The remaining site planting plan is to be sparsely populated with trees planted only to highlight the shapes of the berms, identify depressions, and provide visual barriers. As this is naturally a grassland, I wanted to maintain the character of the site by mirroring the existing ecology.

Sculptural Wall One way I thought about incorporating the wall into the forest was inviting an opportunity to memorialize the names of the people who have trees in the park (beyond the temporary features existing currently). The names can be continually added to, and all names will be in the same location for friends and family to visit. The materiality of the wall was also important. The concrete provides a functional purpose, as it's strong, can be used as a retaining element, and can secure lighting. However, it also allows for different finishes that speak to the history of the site. The railroad was an important feature that had significant impact on the industrial use of this park. The board form concrete is a way of acknowledging the railroad through the materiality of the rail ties as the railway was another strong linear element that shaped the creek long before Deerfoot trail did.

Telus Spark

KAILIN XIE

The goal of this proposed design is to enrich daytime & night activities on-site as well as to create an all-day activities destination. This park will act as a middle point that connects Telus Spark, Tom Cambell's Hill Natural Park, and Calgary Zoo as a whole to derivative more all day activities, especially for night activities. St Georges Park will include activities for all age of people and different time of the day will have different programs to meet the needs. Night time elements such as art lighting, outdoor theater, or food market will be implemented in this proposed design. People can spend more time in this area after they visited Telus Spark or Calgary Zoo so that more human body heat will be created on the site.

Community Garden Skating Rink

The design location and concept is decided to be creating a cohesive walking trail system with different functions that allows people to gather around and interact with each other. The new development contains the staircase goes down the slope, a flat lookout point, a 5 level tiered down structure connects with the existing pathway, a little tiered down pocket park connects to the existing soccer field, a large community activity space with skating rink, playground, community garden, basketball fields and badminton courts and a coffee shop.

Badminton Field

The existing site is empty and lack of sense of place. The site is isolated and not well connected. There is a big steep slope between bridgeland and the nose creek valley as a barrier. Whether they are pedestrians or cyclists, people are making their own way from the top to the Nose Creek valley through the escarpment due to the low quality trail system design that has poor wayfinding system. The design is inspired by the edge effect. The objective is set to be improving and creating opportunity for community connection and access.

The design enhances the connection not only between bridgeland community and valley but also within the community itself. It improves the human activity space. It also provides a better site experience for users.

THE RIBBON

ACTIVATING AN ABANDONED VALLEY

RAIYAN UL MOMIN

The site is a valley, located in NE Calgary, with the Renfrew Community at the West and the Nose Creek at the East. The valley was formed by glacier flow with clean runoff from the slope at the West, running towards the Creek, which once had a meandering shape. This historic Creek shape was first effected by the introduction of the CP railway and then the Deerfoot Trail in 1979 making this and the overall landscape very linear. The development on the West also effected the water quality that runs down the Creek. Therefore the two main objectives were to break the linearity of the landscape and reestablish the historical hydrological process. The first strategy to address this challenge was to create East-West visual connectivity and the second was to revisit the existing storm water outlets on the site which are located perpendicular to the pedestrian pathway. A curvilinear pathway (The Ribbon) with pockets of experiential spaces was designed and a storm water treatment system was developed on the node, connecting the community with the pathway. This design approach will create way finding and surprises for pedestrians with a seasonal design consideration, breaking the linearity and drawing people in this abandoned valley to reactivate this urban landscape.
