DESIGN CONCEPT & INSPIRATION The main concept was derived from Zaha Hadid’s London’s Science Museum. In particular the benches and integrated furniture in The Mathematics: The Winton Gallery at the Science Museum in South Kensington.

BENCH INSPIRATION The bench was our initial idea as we liked the idea of connecting on the same plane with three different variations which could connect.
TABLE INSPIRATION The table was thought of as we thought that it would create a unique play between standing and seating. Add the undulating pattern both in depth and height.

ITEM|001|THE JOINT This bench is the joint between the end tables. The dynamic shape allows for the bench to expand horizontally to allow for the expansion and compression experience. The item is place on the inside of the system allowing the tables to go on the ends.

01 MOVE_ Simple blocks were used as a starting point for each bench. Dimensions were determined early and disseminated to group members to keep dimensions aligned for all objects.
02 MOVE_ Using edge loops, simple movements in the block were formed that would later be manipulated.
03 MOVE_ Using simple edge loop deformations, massings that create concave formations were explored.
04 MOVE_ These concave shapes underneath the bench were further intensified, concave structures were explored on both sides of the bench.
05 MOVE_ Bending was used as a tool to create more dynamism within the bench shape.
06 MOVE_ Smoothing was used as a tool to further refine the concept of the bench as an undulating wave.

ITEM|002|SEAT TO SEAT The end table uses the idea of utilizing the cut to create furniture from the object subtraction. This is our play of thinking about the material differently in a deign and fabrication system.

01 MOVE_ Edge loops were used to block out main massing. Points were shifted along the z axis in order to give the table a “wavy” shape from an aerial view.
02 MOVE_ Using a mesh, the edge loops were further manipulated to create an “undulating” massing for the table.
03 MOVE_ Mesh intensity was increased in order to manipulate more details of the object. This proved to cause problems as the mesh began to proliferate irregularities.
04 MOVE_ Mesh was manipulated further, but towards the goal of simplifying it. It was realized that a simpler mesh would yield a more uniform translation when moving points.
05 MOVE_ Smoothing and a reduction of the mesh was further explored and used as a tool to refine the object.
06 MOVE_ Rulings were created for the final mesh model.
IMPORTANT NOTE Rulings were an essential component for the representation of this object. Because of its undulating form that creates curves in two directions, using tools like rulings were essential in order to accurately represent the object as a whole.

ITEM|003|STANDING ROOM ONLY The other table shows the overall design language is meant to be continued in the system as the bench seemingly lifts to accommodate users before using the same aesthetic to meet the ground in another dynamic display of play with height and user movement.

01 MOVE_ Simple blocks were the basis of this design. Dimensions were disseminated to group members.
02 MOVE_ Edge loops were used to create the basic massing for the bench. The concept centred around creating a cantilevered connection bench.
03 MOVE_ Massing is intensified and the cantilevered aspect of the bench is further developed.
04 MOVE_ “Wings” of the bottom of the bench are flared out. Within the design process, this aspect created the problem of non-manifold edges that had to be resolved.
05 MOVE_ Mesh is further manipulated to create an undulating pattern underneath the bench that translates to a wave form on the top of the bench.
06 MOVE_ The final form is then smoothed to further complement the overall design aesthetic and ethos of the project framework.

ACTION 003|3D PRINT ON MODEL A language was developed which allowed the team to highlight the forms top an bottom surface. Additionally the verticle print members show where there is a verticle member which connects the two. The language keeps the bench form and is an additive member to orndiment the surface,

POINT CLOUD SCAN
The item is scanned on the plinth, so we can see the additional points of the supports. This is where it needs to be adjusted and moved in the scan.
POINT CLOUD OF CLOSENESS The cloud is compared to the physical model. Showing the difference in distance notated in color to show the accuracy of the physical cut.
POINT CLOUD SCAN
The item is readjusted and scanned to give more focus to the mesh of the object

POINT CLOUD
The project was then converted into a point cloud which can then be manipulated in Rhino and Grasshopper.
GRASSHOPPER SCRIPT
The asthetic application of a pattern is applied in grasshopper.
APPLICATION TO SURFACE
The pattern is then applied in 3-Dimensional space
