EQUILIBRIUM

EQUILIBRIUM 1.0 Equilibrium is a multi-functional structure located along 17th AVE SW in Calgary, Alberta. The structure contains therapeutic pools, therapy spaces, and indoor and outdoor art galleries that are submerged into garden spaces throughout. Relative to art, wellness, and water, the program of the building provides spaces for social interaction and personal reflection. Using vegetation and gardens throughout the building acts as a barrier to reveal and conceal private spaces (pools) from public spaces (galleries/exhibits). Nature is incorporated into the building to provide stress relief and submerge users into surroundings that contrasts the built environment.

NOOR NOOR (Arabic): light/glow Noor is a contrast to the typical organic form of nature. The first inspiration for the design comes from Arabian light fixtures that cast geometric patterned shadows on surfaces. The second being, sunlight patterns that shine through natural elements such as trees that create more-free form patterns.

PROGRAM + CONCEPT EXPLORATION The architectural program consists of elements such as, materiality, wellness, creativity, and gardens/green spaces. The design offers various spaces, such as art workshops for paint, fiber, pottery, galleries and exhibits, and community-based resources. The gardens will wrap around these spaces allowing for an immersive experience that encourages social interactions, mobility, discovery and exploration. Painting explorations of these components help connect the form and program to one another. In an attempt to understand these spaces, light and level explores where voids and openings can allow for minimal or maximum sun exposure to the gardens, as well as where the materiality of wood, glass, and vegetation can be used to offer different experiences and various space conditions.

EQUILIBRIUM 2.0 As an iteration, Equilibrium 2.0 aims to explore how users connect to their natural and built environments. By using material local to the ecology it encourages users to explore and discover elements of the building. The subterranean level houses therapeutic spaces such as massage rooms, sound baths and aromatherapy rooms. As the user passes through the main level they are able to interact with one another through the outdoor gathering spaces and gardens. Galleries, gardens, workshops and classrooms are designed on the above ground floors to create immersive experiences as public user exploring or as a private user taking a workshop or class. Through elements of materiality, wellness, gardens, and art, Equilibrium’s purpose is to aid in the wellness of the Calgarian users by having a building that is friendly, encouraging, and exposes us to natural elements that aid in our wellbeing.

A DRINK FROM THE FOUNTAIN OF OMNISCIENCE

A /SITE/SIGHT/ ANALYSIS

Project Summary Through the examination of work by Richard Diebenkorn and Larissa Fassler, a series of paintings were created as a means of analyzing the site given for this studio - a set of parking lots situated along 17th avenue in downtown Calgary between 15th and 7th street. Theoretical aspects of this studio were largely informed by Alex Wall’s essay ‘Programming the Urban Surface’, which raises a number of urban themes such as mobility and access, the inhabitable surface, and waiting for appropriation. In the following paintings, three lots located between 11th and 10th street were analyzed. Mobility & Access examined networks and nodes of intensities. An Inhabitable Surface examined dynamism within the space. And finally, Waiting for Appropriation looked into past and potential future uses.

IN SPACE Project Summary ‘Delicate Bodies’ is a hanging light fixture that takes inspiration from ‘kintsugi’, a Japanese form of art that involves repairing broken pottery with gold lacquer. As a philosophy, ‘kintsugi’ treats the process of breakage and repair as significant in an object’s history, a notion that resonates with my previous research for this studio, in that vulnerability, flaws, and imperfections should be embraced. This idea of ‘kintsugi’ is translated by patching cellophane paper wrap onto tissue paper, thereby emphasizing its delicate and fragile qualities.

Project Summary ‘A Drink from the Fountain of Omniscience’ is a multi-use building that houses therapeutic baths, various art galleries, and both indoor and outdoor gardens. Taking inspiration from courtyard typography and buildings that are simple, pure, and monolithic in form, all of which are characteristics found in several contemplative and meditative spaces, ‘A Drink from the Fountain of Omniscience’ speculates on the journey to wellness and explores how architecture can act as a multi-sensory vehicle for change. By beginning their journeys with the descent into the subterranean, users are forced into spaces of vulnerability. However, they are also encouraged to reflect upon their experiences and to delve deep inside themselves to uncover these aspects of vulnerability and ‘un-wellness’ as they traverse through the building and before ultimately, ascending up to ground level.

Meander The first iteration of the wellness center design focused on mental well being and drew inspiration from the movement of water, especially the way water can carve away and erode natural landscapes to form canyons. This project will attempt to create a sanctuary for the modern city dweller to encourage a sense of mental well being. By creating spaces that are immersive and introspective, inhabitants will be encouraged to look inwards and to take the time to prioritize their emotional needs.

Scandare The second iteration of the wellness center re-imagined how the programme and structure could accommodate a new concept of spirituality and transcendence. Traditional notions of sacred geometry were used to create pleasing proportions throughout the design of the building. The interior organization of the structure uses the Fibonacci series to create a gridded system that focuses on proportionality and zoning of spaces. A processional framework is also considered in the making of the plans to create a ritualistic passage which takes the visitors through each of the facilities.

a space outside of reality

a jux taposition in form that collides the stereotyped office structure [reality] with the unbounded + undefined form of the cr yst al [surreal]. as one progresses upwards, reality dissipates + becomes increasingly unstable until the boundary between reality + surreal is completely lost. t h e u s e r w i l l a r r i v e a t a f a m i l i a r p l a z a + l o b b y, r e m a i n i n g in realit y until check-in. realit y begins to blur as they trade their clothes for a blank canvas + they begin their ascent into the blurred garden: a vertical maze of experimental flora conceptualizations. the route the user takes through the garden is unique, perhaps finding a direct route through, or perhaps exploring all the variations. a cafe + lounge offers a moment of rest at the pinnacle of the blurred garden, allowing the user to reset their mind + body before fully submerging themself into the surreal. within the immersive dreamscape galleries the user ’s unconscious mind can be quietly opened and the dormancies within the self can be discovered + embraced as the first step in ones journeys to wellness.

a space outside of reality

[ u n ] w e l l n e s the journey towards wellness requires achieving a state of harmony between the mind body + soul in its entirety. it requires the courage to expose oneself through determination to reach + identify the dormant potentials, the unknown somethings that reside within the soul. the subconscious mind quietly influences and informs one’s personal philosophy + identity throughout the lifetime, but a person might not understand what these ‘somethings’ are. to be well, one must reveal the unknowns within, the dormant ‘somethings’ that lay beyond the reaches of the conscious psyche - deep within the subconscious mind + embrace them so that the unconscious mind + conscious mind can become synchronized + achieve a state of harmony as one. but how does one reach these unknown + inaccessible places of the psyche?

surrealism provides the vessel for exploration into the unconscious mind. the surrealist approach allows for a unmediated + nonsensicle manifestation of the unconscious thought + interpretation. the distortion + anti-reality constructs of surrealism allows the soul to let go of bias, expectation, + perceived answers to reality so that the soul can quietly open + make sense of the world through irrational form. surrealism allows for the exploration of the soul without the plague of rationality, sensibility, or the burden of straight forward, concrete, or explainable answers one might think are required. surrealism provides access to a blurred dimension creating the opportunity for the unconscious mind to reveal the dormant properties + allow for new discussions to arise.

AQUEOUS ARCHITECTURE

Aqueous Monolith culminates my research on wellness, the therapeutic qualities of water and how water can influence architecture. It intersects water and design to provide a phenomenological experience by exploring the idea of water and the garden. The formal qualities of the architecture was partly driven by the idea of the Chora. It poses the question- how can a piece of architecture in serving as a host and receptacle for water allow itself get deformed willingly? The site strategically borders 11th street, 16th and 17th avenue, I responded with what I believe is a unique piece of architecture that offers spaces for play, renewal and relaxation. The floor plans were designed to ease vertical circulation between dry and wet areas. Stages of Development

The formal explorations considered transparency, void spaces, deformations on the building skin as inspired by water and the various water activities. The circulation plan recognizes the traffic incidence on 17th avenue. The problem was solved by routing vehicular pathways to the 16th avenue facing side of the building while maintaining pedestrian access through all sides of the building.

The Baths on 17th, the first stage of the studio investigates wellness architecture by creating a unique bathing experience. The program attempts to blend the existing buildings, services and adjacencies with the new program by posing and answering the questions ; how does a building effectively blend with its landscape in an inseparable marriage? how do buildings positively transform their pre-existing context as they extend into their surroundings? and how do we design today looking to the future while still responding to the specificity of the site/programme? The subterranean baths were designed to evoke transcendency, an asylum space, tranquility, and a place of refuge. In being located below the city surface, the spaces are buffered from the 17th Avenue noise and traffic incidence.

REGEN

PHASE 1 - KICKOFF The objective of this mini-project is to design a space that is representative of our personal definition of wellness. KICKOFF is an architecture that explores the balance between the emotional, physical, and mental dimensions of wellness by providing spaces that allow activities under these dimensions to flourish. The final iteration of models demonstrate the fluidity and lightweight elements that the work intends to achieve through the development of the final project.

PHASE 2 - FLORA The lighting fixture is a project that embodies the research presented in Phase II of our studio course. My reearch entails the switch from personal explorations of wellness to the communal level instead. With this, I explore the neighbourhood of Sunalta to which I learn that their community garden is a space that brings their community together.

FLORA SUPPLEMENTARY WORKS

PHASE 3 - REGEN The research question in the previous section is: how can the role of water foster healthy relationships at the community level? REGEN is a response to this as the architecture uses the theme of water to drive concepts such as live, learn, and play and will inform the projects’ programmatic conditions. It aims to address the current challenges faced by the community of Sunalta such as food insecurity and lonliness by providing a space for food generation and community gathering.

Title

REGEN is a set of four vertical towers where vegetable gardens occupy the top half while aquariums occupy the bottom half. The design is driven by the technical process of aquaponics. Aquaponics is a cycle process in which the waste of aquatic animals like fish is used as fertilizer to supply nutrients into the plants and in turn the plants provide purification and oxygen to the fish.

THE ROCK

About the Rock The Rock is rehabilitation center with the integration of water and art therapy. With the high complexity of our nowadays society, personal wellness is inseparable to city wellness. It is believed that individuals will make healthy choices by creating a healthy community. Having common goals in being wellness, the community should be inclusive and try its best to provide equal access to resources for every member. Moreover, with the ongoing pandemic situation, our various daily-life spaces are facing an inevitable change. It is now the worldwide interest to re-think of our ways of being social in a public space. This project took the current pandemic crisis into account. The project tried to address the current interest in post-pandemic design through the implication of one-way circulation. Moreover, the form of this building’s exterior and interior are made to reinforce the local cultural identity. Interesting space are made through the exploration of this form.
