Connecting Cities for Better Future
CONNECTIVE Cities, a project initiated by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the German Association of Cities and Engagement Global gGmbH/Service Agency Communities in One World, gathered urban practitioners from Asia and Germany in the Connective Cities Practitioners’ Workshop on Sustainable Urban Mobility and Climate Change – Reducing Air Pollution by Climate-Friendly Means of Urban Transport from September 27-29, 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand. In the workshop, participants were exposed with good practices and experience from the region as well as from German municipalities; allowing an overview of solutions for sustainable urban mobility and understanding the respective success factors. Participants were also invited to present individual challenges on managing urban mobility as well as find solutions jointly in a peer-to-peer advisory session. This workshop also developed action plans for future project ideas in the respective cities of the participants.

At the end of the workshop, four projects were developed based on discussion in good practices exchange and peer-to-peer advisory session; which included transport oriented development in Cebu to contribute to the green mobility in the area, developing low carbon technology for public transport system to provide sustainable transport to, through, and within the urban area, implementing low emission zone in Bangkok focusing on minimizing pollution level in Bangkok for example through non-motorized vehicles, and applying low carbon in Chiang Mai through project implementation involving multi approaches (policy, infrastructures and technology). Results of this workshop also included future project initiation. One of it is a joint project between Connective City and UCLG and UCLG ASPAC in formulating strategy for urban renewal in Kota Tua (Old Town) and Pasar Ikan (Fish Market) in Jakarta. Other future proposal includes cooperation of Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Cebu and Jinan in developing low carbon transport projects initiating the use of new low carbon technology for city public transport system. Other results also included cooperation with Connective Cities on learning agenda as well as establishing network with several cities.
