A Call to Unite and Combat Climate Change
Global Covenant of Mayors in a discussion to assist cities to combat climate change.
UCLG ASPAC, in close collaboration with the European Union (EU) provides platform for local governments to cooperate and materialise their plans for sustainable city, as part of International Urban Cooperation (IUC) Asia project. Through engagement with the project, cities will have the opportunity to share and exchange knowledge with their international counterparts, building a greener, and more prosperous future. The project includes two main components: city-to-city cooperation on sustainable urban development and sub-national action under the covenant of mayors initiative. IUC Asia project implements the Regional Chapter of the Global Covenant of Mayors.
WHAT IS GLOBAL COVENANT OF MAYORS? Focused on the component two of IYC, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM), is an international coalition of local and regional authorities with shared long-term vision of promoting and supporting voluntary action to combat climate change and move to a low-carbon society. GCoM is based on the following core principles: local governments are key contributors, city network as critical partners, a robust solution agenda, reducing GHG emissions and fostering local climate resilience, and standardising measurement approaches and reporting for cities. This platform is a first-of-its-kind and largest global coalition of cities leading the fight against climate change. It also formally brings together the Compact of Mayors and the EU Covenant of Mayors, the world’s two primary initiatives of cities to assist cities and local governments in their transition to a low-carbon economy, and demonstrate their global impact. GCoM is located across the globe and organised according to principles and methods that best suit each region. The Mayors and local leaders in this alliance are ready to take concrete measures with long-term impact to tackle the interconnected challenges of climate change mitigation, adaptation, and access to sustainable energy.
HOW TO COMMIT GCOM? GCoM brings together thousands of local governments voluntarily committed to implement climate and energy objectives on their territory. It is a powerful response by cities to address the climate challenge. It is the world’s broadest multi-stakeholder alliance committed to local climate leadership in building on the commitment of over 7,400 cities. More and more cities and local governments across the globe are heeding the call to act, and their responses could not be more urgent as nations begin the work of meeting
the goals of the Paris Climate Agrreement. Any city in the world may commit to the GCoM for Climate and Energy – regardless of its size or location. UCLG ASPAC, through its role as IUC Asia SupportDesk, invites member cities to join and sign the GCoM commitment in combating climate change which is among the major issues that the world is facing today. The committed cities benefit from support in the form of technical expertise and cooperation to act on their energy and climate commitments.
