UCLG ASPAC welcomes a new member. Sabeena Gul from Pakistan, recently joined as Coordinator for South and Southwest Sub-region. She is based in Islamabad. In terms of education, Sabeenaobtained a Degree in Law and a Post-Graduate Diploma in International Human Rights Law. Â
She supports and values womenempowerment because for her, societythat restricts women from contributing to all walks of life to the fullest potentials and abilities is like a person trying to run a marathon, but using only one leg. Having worked both at policy and grass-roots levels, Sabeena also believes that local governments are the most important actors able to bring about positive changes in the lives of the people they represent. She sees that local governments are closer to the ground realities, and considering the principles of "subsidiarity" and "participation," they are best positioned in effectively and efficiently addressing the development and governance needs of their people. She strongly agrees with the UCLG ASPAC vision of bringing the local governments together to have a united voice to advocate for promotion of democratic self-governance. She is optimistic that at UCLG ASPAC, she will learn more about how citizen’s human, political, social and economic rights are protected and promoted through local governments in rural and urban areas and also wish to be exposed to good practices in different contexts. Sabeena is very excited joining UCLG ASPAC. She fully understands that it will be a challenging assignment. Good luck and welcome to the team, Sabeena!
