School Nickname

School Colors

“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school. Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors in 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma.

2013 UCO Volleyball

Coaches/Outlook

2013 UCO Volleyball Head Coach Edgar Miraku In his second year at the controls of the Central Oklahoma program is Edgar Miraku, a former assistant coach for the Bronchos who enjoyed a sensational high school coaching career before returning to the college ranks. Miraku led a youthful UCO team to a 13-18 record last year, with the Bronchos tying for seventh in the rugged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, arguably the toughest conference in NCAA Division II. Edgar came to UCO after a wildly succesfuly sevenyear stint at Edmond Memorial, guiding the Bulldogs to a 209-48 record and four Class 6A state championships. Miraku led EMHS to the first of those state titles in his initial year, with the Bulldogs going 41-16 in capturing the 2005 crown. A 24-9 season that included a state semifinal appearance followed and Memorial won another championship in 2007 to cap a 31-4 year. The Bulldogs went 27-3 and made it to the state quarterfinals in 2008 before winning back-to-back titles in 2009 and ‘10, going a combined 62-8 those two years. Memorial finished 25-9 and made it to the state tournament semifinals in 2011. Miraku was a remarkable player in his own right, competing professionally in his native Albania for four years. He was a member of the Albanian Junior National Team from 1992-95, winning a silver medal in the 1993 Balkan Championships. Miraku came to the United States in 1995 and immediately joined the UCO program, serving as a student assistant, graduate assistant and volunteer assistant for five years while earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The Bronchos went 12775 during that span, qualifying for the Lone Star Conference Tournament every year. Edgar has coached several club teams during his career, including a lengthy stint with the Oklahoma Peak Performance (OP2) junior club team. He led OP2 to a 58-18 record and fifth-place national finish in 2002-03, with the 2009 team finishing third in the nation. Miraku has also been actively involved for many years with the U.S. Men’s Sitting National Team and served as head coach for two years before coming to UCO. He guided the team to the 2010 World Championships, the 2010 World Cup and the 2011 Continental Cup. Edgar is married (Amy) and has two children (Abiana and Arden). 1 4

She was a four-year letterwinner for the Bronchos as an outside hitter/defensive specialist from 1996-99, serving as team captain

her senior season. Jamie has coaching experience on the high school, club, beach, national and international levels. Aweau was head coach at Choctaw High School in 2008 and served as a team leader to the U.S. Women’s Paralympic Team that won the silver medal at the 2010 World Championships. 2013 UCO Volleyball Season Outlook better production on the right side from Tyler, who has matured a lot from last year.”

A youthful Central Oklahoma team hopes to make more noise in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2013 as the Bronchos look to learn from their inaugural season in the premiere conference in NCAA Division II. UCO tied for seventh in the league last year, with five players back from that 13-18 team. Nine newcomers -- six freshmen and three transfers -- join that group and second-year head coach Edgar Miraku says his team will benefit from last year’s experience. “Having been in the conference a year will help in the sense that we know how tough it really is,” Miraku said. “It’s good to be a part of this league. We know we can’t slack off and we have to prepare and get better every week.” All five returners saw extensive playing time last year, with Tate Hardaker leading the way. The team’s lone senior and one of the top liberos in the MIAA, Hardaker has played in every set the past three years. Junior Juliette Smith is one of the best blockers in the conference, while the Bronchos also return junior Carissa Ophus and sophomores Tyler Gromann and Barbara Jackson. “We’ve got to stay healthy, but I like our team and the way they compete,” Miraku said. “We want to compete with the top teams in our league and we can do that if we continue building as a team and as individuals.” A position-by-position look at UCO:

Middle Blocker

UCO has one of the best blockers in the league back here in junior Juliette Smith, while freshman Allison Barr is ready to step into an immediate starting role. Smith had 131 total blocks last year -- finishing fourth in the MIAA with 1.22 a set -- and added 178 kills. She should be even better this year and is ready to stake her claim as one of the MIAA’s elite players. Coach Miraku Says: “Juliette will be a strong force in the middle. She’s physically stronger and worked really hard in the offseason. Allison is a great athlete and we’re expecting big production from her.”

Libero

One of the best in the business headlines UCO’s back-row defense in senior captain Tate Hardaker. Hardaker had the fifth-most digs in school history last season (581), ranking third in the league. She’s on the verge of moving into UCO’s top-five list for career digs and is a consistent force at this crucial position with her versatility. Junior Carissa Ophus will Tate Hardaker see time in a defensive specialist role, as could freshmen Mikayla Outside/Right-side Hitter Bangasser and Katy Davis. The Bronchos return a pair of hard-hitting Coach Miraku Says: “Tate had a great year sophomores in Tyler Gromann and Barbara last season and we expect a lot out of her. She Jackson, with a large group of newcomers has been a true leader of our team and will be expected to help out. the backbone of our defense.” Gromann saw part-time starting duty last year and appears poised for a breakout season, Setter while Jackson is coming off a fantastic rookie Two newcomers will be fighting for the top campaign that saw her rack up 240 kills, 156 spot, with junior Taylyn Schwartz and freshdigs and 59 blocks. man Katy Davis set to battle it out. Junior transfers Joanna Huckabee and Schwartz set single-season and career assist Sabetha Young should both vie for extended acrecords at Fort Smith Community College, while tion, with freshmen Mallory Fox, Dana Olsen Davis did the same at her high school. and Ava Zimmerman all capable of helping. Coach Miraku Says: “Both Taylyn and Coach Miraku Says: “We’re expecting a lot Katy have similar styles and either one is capable out of Barbara, she had a great freshman year of running our offense.” and will be a major force for us. We look to get

2013 UCO Volleyball Hamilton Field House Central Oklahoma plays its home volleyball matches in Hamilton Field House, which opened its doors in 1965. The Bronchos have an impressive 209-81 (.721) record at Hamilton Field House, including a 104-32 (.768) mark over the past 13 seasons. The Bronchos have 14 matches at HFH this season. Hamilton Field House was re-named from Broncho Field House on May 1, 1993 in honor of longtime coach and athletic director Dale Hamilton, who helped design the building in the 1960s. The 3,000-seat facility underwent renovation in the summer of 2001 with the installation of individual chairback seats on the floor and LED boards capable of showing live statistics were added three years ago. Hamilton Field House also serves as the home for UCO’s wrestling team in addition to the men’s and women’s basketball squads. 2013 UCO Volleyball The MIAA Central Oklahoma is in its second year as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The MIAA, a 14-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis. The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA. The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA. The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Mis-

souri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State). Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980. Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007. Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over. Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season. Southeast Missouri left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season. Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010. On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to NebraskaKearney and Lindenwood. Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same last year, which left 14 schools in the MIAA.
